    Love your channel, Scotty! I've got a 2005 Civic EX, and have been doing all of the work on it myself without a whole lot of prior knowledge. I'm about to replace the much of the front and rear suspension with new parts (coilovers, bushings, ball joints, end links, rack ends, etc). Took the last 6 months or so buying the needed tools and parts so I can do this kind of work myself, and it really feels good to have the tools I need for the job and be able to get the work done for a fraction of the price that I'd pay someone else to do it.

      @@doodletechnologies3189 I think a lot of them don't want to be in the business of supplying parts for vehicles not in production. I've heard people argue about whether or not there really is a law saying they have to supply parts for some length of time, but I can imagine them pricing them really high to discourage people, yet be compliant with the law.
      I can't believe the FWD axles Honda sells (600+ dollars each) are 6x better than those I see for around 100.

      my question is how many of those OEM parts made in the same factory as the after market parts. Seems to me there is probably only so many companies actually building alternators for example.

    • @travispratt6327
      @travispratt6327 4 года назад

      David Kearns Well, they could use different tolerances and specifications to get a cheaper price even if it’s the exact same factory, but with that being said a lot of parts have to pass certain standards and safety minimums, so it’s probably very similar if not the same.

    That's True Scotty... My cousin is a licensed mechanic... Back in 2013 I had a job riding on me getting transportation... I knew to get a 3800 engine because I was low on cash & I know those engines run forever as long as you take pretty good care of them. By the Grace of God, one of my old student's dad knew someone who was selling an '03 Impala for $2500... The only. It was a private seller. He was driving an Impala & had a 3rd on sitting in his yard. The only thing wrong was the tie rod & struts because he said he hit a guard rail from almost falling asleep at the wheel. My cousin test drove it & said, "If you don't get this car, you're crazy!" He said that because he knows how OCD I am. He was focused on how it ran. I got the car. The first thing we did was go to the salvage yard. He found two practically brand new struts with the original tags still on there... I only paid $50. It's also true about OEM vs aftermarket... Back home I would always go to this one parts place because they would always price point & tell me the risk of the OEM vs. the aftermarket. I needed a fuel pump for my '03 Impala & they told me to buy the OEM. They close at 5:30 pm on weekdays, 2 pm on Saturday, & closed on Sunday... But I loved how knowledgeable they are. They are always cheaper than Auto Zone & these other places. If they don't have it, they will order it for me! 😊

    As usual, you are right on target Scotty. But here is what you missed.... When you go to the dealer for a repair, they don't always use the OEM part you expect them to use. Most of the time they order the part from the local Auto Parts store as you would, but they charge you the OEM list price for that part. I have seen this happen a lot of times when the local parts delivery truck comes into their lot. You don't get what you pay for, there is no way you can be assured you are getting OEM parts unless you are standing right there with the mechanic when he opens the OEM box and displays the part for you. Been there and have seen it happen!

    Great advice, wish I had it a year ago. I rebuilt a 1987 Nissan Pathfinder for my daughter and used Aftermarket part for the A/C, suspension, headlights, distributor, fuel injectors, sensors, front grill and rear hatch lift supports, mostly because Nissan doesn't make most of the OEM parts for that year. All of them worked perfectly, but I did research the brands and looked at reviews. I also spent many days at the junkyards of New Mexico, found the last A/C belt tensioner in the state.

    I have a 2006 Honda accord 6-speed manual. The clutch went out at 180k. A mechanic put a new clutch in it. It started slipping at 11,000 miles. The mechaninc said "it's just an OEM clutch" as if I shouldn't expect it to last. If the first clutch lastes 180k anything labeled "OEM" should last just as long. OEM should mean as good as the original equipment, but it dosen't and I think it should be law.

      +1 for OEM. The scrapyard is my friend! The only time I deviate is when I'm very confident that a newer aftermarket part exceeds the original quality.
      The key to buying OEM is understand that your dealership can still mark it up 200%. (Not everything, but some things.) If you can find the actual Nippon Denso or NGK or whatever part number, sometimes you can buy it locally or online MUCH cheaper.

One thing I will say is that engine mounts should be replaced with OEM parts most of the time. I have a 2008 Honda Odessey and a 2002 WRX and both have been recommended to go OEM. Most everything else I also check for recalls on ie fuel pumps. I both cars replaced with recalls on the pumps so always check....even older cars!!

      I hear this all the time, but seriously, how do you know? Saved thousands replacing brakes and rotors and can't tell the difference by price. If they fit, work, stop when you want them to and don't wear out too fast, are you just paying extra for peace of mind or out of fear. I Do a lot of research buying tires and it pays off (really notice differences) Brakes and rotors? not so sure.

    • @edwardjenner1381
      @edwardjenner1381 4 года назад

      @@mikepantaleo2360 Agree. I am constantly astounded by the low price of brake pads. I usually try to find reasonably 'expensive' ones - like $60 instead of $25, but for my '88 F150 I really only find $25-30 ones (rear set of 4 $28 - I don't even know how they ship them for that) and they always work just fine, no squeaking, seem to last (10 years on my front ones, don't drive it much). Rotors, meh, after having an Audi that when through rotors dater than pads, I just get the cheapest ones. I can't tell the difference.
