HID Headlights: Are they Better than LEDs?

  • Obviously a headlight housing that has integrated LEDs or Factory HIDs cannot be changed to have halogens or HIDs easily, but we can install LEDs and HIDs into headlights that have come standard with halogens. With that being said, which of the two is the better route? I have purchased the best HID and LED kits on the market with my own money to put the question to the test.
    I am not being paid to sway one way or another, so you are going to be getting my honest opinion with the hopes to help you find some awesome headlight bulbs for your car! #KillAllHalogens

    When you're replacing your standard halogen bulb with an led bulb you need to make sure the led chip is in the same place that the filament is on the halogen, the reflector is designed to throw the light coming from that specific area, otherwise you'll have shadows and a scattered beam pattern

    • @kevinjfeeney77
      @kevinjfeeney77 5 лет назад +1

      Yup, the LED kits I chose said they had focal beam adjustment... I was able to not only adjust the chips as stated in the video (3 and 6 o'clock) but also where the center of the LED chips would be where the center of the filament once was.
      For my Subaru Legacy I ran the SNGL brand off Amazon and on the 2001 Odyssey some Sealights.....
      I should also mention that both cars use the low beams when I need to flash to pass...from an "all lights off" condition. Bad on HIDs, but LEDs don't care

    Hey, guys: For any of you who have to remove your entire bumper just to change a headlight bulb, always look for the easier alternative, because there very well might be one where you do not have to go through the headache of entire front bumper removal. For example: My 2017 Mustang GT required entire bumper removal to replace the headlights until I discovered that I can perform this task with a much easier alternative and that is just to turn the wheels sharply where the tires tuck all the way into the wheel well. Then I had to remove part of the wheel well splash shield and one simple fender reinforcement strut held by just two bolts, and then--voila! There was the back of the headlight assembly where all I then had to do was to unscrew the dust caps, pull the electrical connection and pull out the bulbs with absolutely no front bumper removal! If you own a 2015 Mustang and up--you can definitely use this headlight removal procedure. Now, just check if this can be done with your own make and model of car.

    HID steps all over LED's especially the 55watt version. 55watt still out last halogen by a long time and they are about 10 bucks a pair and the very best (if there is any real difference) is 25 bucks.
    I tried several high end LED's (2019) and 55 watt HID is way brighter, there is no comparison.
    HID is not complicated you have a ballast and a bulb with LED's you have a driver and a bulb. In many cases you do not need a relay kit, I run one because i want to take the load of the light circuit and BTW even 55 watt HID's draw less current than a 55watt Halogen, it's just their start-up current is a little high for a few seconds...
    There is something about the reflected light from a LED that makes them subpar (IMO). It's hard to explain but reflected light is what allows you to see and LED's somehow do not have good reflective qualities.
    =======================================================================================
    This video is the first one I have seen that is accurate.

    What you say near the end is important... "Aim your lights so they dont blind oncoming drivers". Nothing sucks more then driving on a 2 lane road that has no street lighting then being blinded by a bright LED headlight that is improperly tuned, legit cant see a goddamn thing as if I were seeing the gates of heaven.

      What you’re complaining about is HID bulbs in halogen reflectors that were never designed for that kind of bulb. The reflector can’t aim the light properly.

    • @drunknmunky127
      @drunknmunky127 5 лет назад +1

      @@jav_eee Exactly. The reflector was designed to a specific source. Once you change that source the system is no longer doing anything properly. It may be brighter but it's basically a guarantee that you are glaring other drivers. The more light, the more pain for other drivers, and the more brights you'll see flashed back at you. Honestly, if you have a bulb system, the best "upgrade" you can do is buying a higher output bulb. At least then the beam pattern will remain mostly the same, even though it still likely will no longer pass legal pattern regulation and will still put more light in other driver's eyes.

    I like that you hit the main point when installing these types of bulbs. Only install HID's or LED's if your vehicle has projector lenses. These lights are designed only for projector lenses. If you put them into a headlight that has a reflective housing, you'll be blinding everyone on the road six ways to Sunday. Also properly aiming your projectors is key 👍🏼.

    I have an E36 Bimmer and upgraded to 5000K 55 Watt HIDs 7 years ago. Never burnt out a bulb and never had a day's trouble.
    55 Watt gives a sexy spread of light and 5000K is Daylight.
    Don't choose another colour. Higher gives harsh light and lower looks warm.

  • @flyhacking5830
    @flyhacking5830 5 лет назад +85

    1. Always retrofit a quality projector for using HIDs.
    2. LEDs are good everywhere except for headlights regardless of it being a reflector or projector.
    3. Any aftermarket LED is not going to properly disperse light compared to an HID in a HID projector.
    4. Not all projectors are created the same. There are also halogen projectors. Some suck while others are able to take HID's just fine.
    5. If you think having HID's in your reflector bowl is brighter, you're wrong. You don't want foreground (light directly in front of the car). That hurts your far-seeing vision since your eyes focus on the brighter spot.
    6. The higher the kelvin, the less usable light there is. The highest Kelvin you want to think about is 6500k. Anything above looks terrible and is useless. 5500k is pure white but is not good for snow and/or rain. 4300/4500k is the best in terms of usable light and it puts the least strain on the eyes.

      1. Wrong. Things have changed a lot.
      2. Zes chips have really improved led bulbs. A piaa platinum is really impressive although 6000k sucks ass.
      3. Led are getting better but will never work better then halogen or hid.
      4. I have little experience with this so can't comment.
      5. That makes no sense. If you are talking about a sloppy beam pattern blinding you then i agree. Higher kelvin plus a sloppy pattern will blind you.
      6. I absolutely %100 agree with this. 4000k or lower improves visiblity and reaction time. Its frustrating trying to convince people of this. Only way i found to really prove it is 150mph down a windy country road. You cannot see where you are going.
      Side note...
      Making led at 6000k gives you a higher lux then 4000k.

Xenon lights can damage the halogen headlights, as they are not prepared for xenon, and they almost never aim as they should. Here in Portugal, both aftermarket LED's and xenon are illegal (thankfully), as you need a headlight washer and proper headlight to run xenon, as well as auto-leveler for the headlight. For LED's you do not need the washer, does not make sense, but whatever. Don't get me wrong, LED's and Xenon are the best way to illuminate the road, but the lighting system must be prepared for it, and any modification from halogen to these systems are illegal and won't end well. Here (in Portugal) it is a direct fail in periodic inspection, unless the car is factory ready to these systems, or otherwise properly prepared. Taking a bulb out and swapping it for another is not properly prepared.

    • @Interich
      @Interich 5 лет назад

      Well, nowadays you also get the projector for some xenon. Luckily my car has xenon headlights as standard, although mine didn't. I will be fitting a morimoto projector especific for the hid kit from them. Is a shame not every country allows that. On the yearly inspection, you can get lucky or not. Last year my car went with HIDs on halogen headlights and because I have the covers of headlight washers no issues came on my mind.

      In the US (and I bet Canada too) it’s also illegal to do this but there’s no enforcement. People dot it and go out blinding everyone. I hate being followed by people that modified their lights, especially trucks.

    • @NotME535
      @NotME535 5 лет назад

      @@bosoares Same here. It is illegal, and almost always blinds everybody, as the hedlights aren't made for it. Sometimes police punishes, yes, but only trafic police can do it. In inspection it is a sure fail, and the punishment is getting the car inspected, in inspection B. We have mandatory inspection (thankfully) but not all cars are obligated to go every year. The first inspection is when a car is 4 years old, the it is inspected every 2 years until it is 8 years old, after that it is inspected every year. Inspection B happens when an officer mandates it, or when a car is crashed and repaired, I believe. I'm not sure on this last one.

    I prefer HID bulbs more than LED ones even though I have both of them at my car in auxilary lights. Only thing why LED's sucks is winter. At here Finland its usually cold and snowy at winter. That causes that headlights to surface freeze and then light patter is ruined and lights are illuminating very bad. HID's generates heat and it melts ice off from headlight glass. LED's (atleast mine) cant do that.
    So HID's are better than LED's at cold&snowy areas

    I didnt really pay attention to the video. Im sorry for that. Dont have time to watch it now, But alot of people over look this. Led's (light emitting diode) are bright, vivid, and depending on the headlight housing and quality of the bulb can look amazing. But if you live in the northern states and get winter weather, the appealing look and less power might seem like something to good to pass up. But LED's dont get very hot. And will not melt the ice / snow build up which will occur during the winter months. Some led's say they have a heater element in them, but they still dont work very good. HID's (high intensity discharge ) is an arc basically. It gets hot. And will melt snow.
    If you got the loot, buy both. One for the summer (leds), and Hid's for the winter.

This is for cheapy replacement bulbs which are not only horrible in quality but in most countries illegal as the scatter pattern in particular cars were not intended to use either HID or LED bulbs. The projector low beams can use HID without much fussing about, but the stock standard reflectors cannot. So when you see a car driving at you and they are blinding you, it isn't a new BMW or Audi, it's a 15 year old Honda Accord that has had its bulbs replaced by its novice driver, who is utterly clueless, but this is the age of RUclips and everyone thinks they know everything about cars because they also learned on someone else's RUclips video 5 years ago. Wrong then is still wrong now.

      I'm fairly new to my 07 4runner. Looking to do this upgrade on my lights including the fog lights. What's the name of the LEDs you installed and where can I purchase them?

      JJS I totally agree, I had good 35 Watt HID lights in my projector headlights as well as high beam and the high beam was just to slow so installing LEDS was a no brainer but the output surprised the hell out of me so installed the same 35 Watt LED in projectors and oh my god, let there be light, LED the only way to go.

      I tried several different led bulbs in my projector housing and none where as bright as my new hid setup. The hids I installed make almost twice the light output vs the led bulbs and have a much better beam pattern😃

      HID vs. LED par for par HID is brighter, wider beam, and reaches further. This is after researching countless hours of comparison videos and talking with The Retrofit Source who literally all they do is headlights.

    My Mercedes has a BiXenon system from the factory and I absolutely love it. The warmup isn’t too bad, and they’ve been reliable considering it’s the original bulbs from 2007. When warming up they’re a beautiful turquoise blue for about 10 seconds before being whitish blue. They’re super bright and really make driving at night much more enjoyable. When using high beam the bulbs angle up and it also turns on an H7 halogen high beam. I want to upgrade the high beam at some point to an LED bulb, but I don’t have the space to put the extra fan and control box. Would a standard led bulb with everything integrated work? The back of the housing on my headlamps have covers that go over the rear of the bulb area.

    Thank you. Very useful. BTW, is installing a fan cooled LED, at the fog lamp level, where it would be exposed to a lot of water, dust, slush etc., a workable solution still? Would it by any chance, reduce the life of the bulb?

      Definitely, but that's why they cost so much at the dealer to replace.

    How to make everyone on the road hate you: do a HID or LED swap and blind every car in oncoming traffic because your light housing isn't made for those lights and doesn't have a projector.
    And if you live in europe your car will fail inspection in most countries. You can get a ticket, etc.
    Not worth all the fuss, Just get whitevision halogen lights if you don't like the fact that they shine yellow and want a little better illumination

    So your video is very helpful, I like how you into specifics and installation. I would like your help if possible. I have the new 2018 Jeep Compass sport. I’m looking to change the headlights in general to get better vision at night. My main course was LED but your video proves to me that HID seem brighter. My problem would be installing it I don’t want to tare and wear my brand new car. So should I just go with LED? Also what wattage and size should I be looking for? Hope to hear back thanks

      i have a 2016 dodge ram with factory projectors with hids, and i constantly get morons high beaming me when my low beams are on, i had the head lights aimed by the dealer and a specialist that only deals with hids and projector lights, still get butt hurt morons fucking high beaming me, i just had a guy follow me to me house to start shit, but i grabbed him by his cheek and shoved my desert eagle into his word hole all the sudden he didn't have anything else to say and pissed himself

      @@bleachinuri if your truck is lifted chances are you have to adjust for the change in height. Also the dealer will only adjust to factory specs when they should account for glare. I've had dealerships do this and blinded the shit out of people until I adjusted the lights a bit lower.

      bleachinuri you still need to adjust them down. Putting HID bulbs in halogen projectors is fine but the cutoff isn’t as sharp and there is glare. I had to adjust my headlights down quite a bit from factory spec when I installed HIDs. Quit being a dick and just do it.

    I have HIDs from factory. The car was made in 2011. Not one bulb has gone bad. I can only imagine how long the LEDs can go. 20 years? 😮.
