I was so happy to find this video about Boaz. He is a very dear friend. I met him when he had a luthier shop in Studio City, CA many years ago. I was fortunate to come into his life at a time when he was building guitars to take to the Healdsburg Guitar Festival. He accepted a $12k commission from me for a Clarita Negra classical, although I could only give him $100 to start. I worked for him off and on for months and had built up a $3k credit toward the guitar. He said he had a closet full of guitars that musicians all over the world were paying for, keeping their guitars 'on layaway'. He said it didn't matter how long it took me to pay it off, it was still mine.
Later that year we drove to Healdsburg in my 1977 International Scout, carrying five guitars. We didn't have a place to stay, but he told me not to worry. Within an hour of arriving he had us a place to stay (for free) for the entire festival.
Dr. Kasha, who was lecturing there, took us out to dinner one night- such a kind and elegant man. He told us the story of how he became interested in guitar acoustics. (He also paid for our dinner.)
On the way back the Scout lost reverse gear and it was a little tricky getting back to L.A. safely.
Several months after returning I was informed that a close relative had passed away and had left me a little money. For someone who never had more than a week's paycheck in his pocket at any one time in his life, it seemed like a fortune.
A week later I called Boaz to tell him I wanted to make a 'payment' on my guitar. I went to his apartment about 11:00 one morning, and he was still in his bathrobe, having worked throughout the previous night on a guitar. He graciously made Turkish coffee, and we sipped and chatted for a half an hour. Always pleasure before business.
I said, "Boaz, I'd like to make a payment." He got out his receipt book, picked up a pencil, sat next to me, and began filling out the receipt. "How much do you want to pay?"
I handed him an envelope with 9k cash, and he fell off the barstool. He said that in all his years of guitar building no one had EVER given him that much cash, and he'd be telling his grandchildren about it.
Months before, when the guitar was almost finished, Boaz had asked me, "What's her name?" I hadn't thought of it, so I said I would let him know in a few days. I went to a bookstore and looked through books of baby names to find something appropriate. While wandering the bookstore aisles I came across a textbook on Irish Gaelic, and I found 'her' name.
My guitar is 'Cailin Rua'- the red-headed girl (in Irish Gaelic). The top is redwood, hence the name. Before Boaz closed 'her' up I wrote 'Cailin Rua' on the inside and Boaz wrote in Hebrew, 'The Harp of David.'
It's a much better guitar than I'll ever be a guitar player, but I cherish it and think of Boaz every time I pick her up. And, yes, Boaz is a genius.

Wow what a man he is, when he said he didn’t care about patents and money this story really shows. I admire your loyalty also, as the first thing that came to your mind once you had your inheritance is to pay Boaz in FULL. A lot of people would have maybe paid a little or haggle the remaining balance just to take advantage of Boaz’s kind nature.
Boaz is one of the world's greatest luthiers. He has built hundreds of Classical, Flamenco, steel string, and historic stringed instruments. He is also a virtuoso player.... Not too mention one of the nicest people you could ever meet...
So, he is not like some people I know, i.e. having no experience in something, having an idea nobody ever did before (sometimes for good reasons), being convinced it is the best thing in the world, and going forth with their idea even if true knowledgeable people are refractant about it?

The big players are re-re-re-re-releasing the same few models at inflated prices while guys like Boaz are the true innovators and attracting guitarists' attention.
When Gibson and Fender copy it, it will cost at least three times more.

it really is, although i wonder if it works for all players and string gauges.heck we cant all agree on whether or not the earth is round or flat so,its all really a matter of adding some fine-tuning adjustment to the saddle pieces and boom, your cooking with gas.

Fuck tradition. Leo Fender went against tradition and made a guitar with a solid body. One that was designed to be modular to make repairs fast and economical.
Looked like Leo was onto something.

The plastic the neck is made from is delrin. Gonna be watching for this one! Hope they make a Floyd style bridge.

From Wikipedia: Polyoxymethylene (POM), also known as acetal,[2]polyacetal, and polyformaldehyde, is an engineering thermoplastic used in precision parts requiring high stiffness, low friction, and excellent dimensional stability. As with many other synthetic polymers, it is produced by different chemical firms with slightly different formulas and sold variously by such names as Delrin, Celcon, Ramtal, Duracon, Kepital, and Hostaform.

I might be jumping the gun a little bit, but hey, call it artistic license. ;)
As a part time maker and a long time buyer, I'd say you're right for people who are looking to spend $3000 on a stratocaster with options that don't make any sense as to why it's $1500 more than an american pro.
But the bulk of the market now (vs. the folks who have been playing a long time) is lower cost guitars and people who are wondering whether or not they should spend $300 or $400.
Unfortunately, a large part is going to acoustics - this cam/modular setup would've probably done a little better if it could've been introduced in the 1990s or late 1980s when more interesting stuff got some traction.
The modular concept is basically one step further than fender to begin with (fender having parts intended to just throw away when they got worn, which is why it's puzzling that so many makers are trying to sell $2 and $3k+ guitars basically assembled from parts). This concept pretty much upended the hand plane world in the 1860s when leonard bailey released a plane design that was modular and thus much easier to manufacture and easier to adjust if something was out of place (the Stanley plane - stanley tool became gargantuan after buying and manufacturing the design).
@@daw162 I really hope there are enough players out there willing to embrace the future to make this a success. Personally, I would buy one over a new gibson or fender overpriced nonsense any day of the week!
Even if just the hard wearing non warping no truss rod needed plastic neck with what seems to be well nigh indestructible frets and the self intonation no tech required bridge design was the only thing that caught on, I would want both on every one of my guitars!
I think there are two types of guitarist: those who pay attention to the "feeling" a guitar gives them, and those who just focus on what they actually hear with their own ears. The subjective emotional approach is probably more common, but there are still a lot of people who play guitar that are just interested in what makes the most practical sense. This is the guitar they will want.

This was a great in depth look by someone who will be critical but yet respectful of the thought behind what is in front of him. If this is produced and comes to light it will be great. June 2020 for kickstarter payouts. Great video, I really loved your enthusiasm for this guitar, it speaks volumes for the project.
The approach taken for the engineering and manufacturing methods is truly a game-changer in every way. I hope it is embraced by the market and catches on. Very impressive development!

Very intriguing. Im presuming hes' saying "delrin" but its just the English barrier. Delrin is a super durable plastic. Its machinable unlike most other plastics. Celcon is similiar aswell

For those of you who would scoff at having a plastic guitar (not having heard it in person I might add) I would like to point out that 37 years ago a little company overseas developed the first composite (derisively called plastic) handgun. Boaz seems like such a humble and friendly person. He's clearly living his passion and I think this is where his genius comes from. His inventions are profound because he *cares* about the problems he's solving. He's not doing it for money. He's doing it because it needs to be done. Truly inspiring.

This was interesting to watch and the guitar was not what I was expecting it to be like. Some info about Delrin.
It's a very VERY high density extremely high temperature thermoplastic. It's reinforced with a large percentage glass fiber in this mix. He's right that it's pretty expensive.
I doubt you'd be able to wear these things over 5+ years with very regular playing. I suspect the metal on the frets will actually wear quicker.
That is genius. Fantastic engineering and some really clever inventions such as that deceptively simple pre intonated bridge. It was really a "why has nobody done that in the last 300 years" moment when he explained it!

I listened to your introduction with extreme skepticism ("The Next BIG Thing!!"), simply because I've heard it so many times over the years...and been disappointed. What can I say: As you get older you tend to get a bit jaded, and experience can be a cruel teacher. With that in mind, in less than an hour Boaz and his fascinating piece of innovation have me feeling like there actually is hope...that technology can actually be used to advance the world of music in a positive way, and not simply be used to cut cost and increase profits! I could prattle on at length, but you get my point (?). Boaz's wonderful package (and Boaz himself) may well have won me over! I'm intrigued, in a very positive way, and I hope that the industry doesn't find a way to 'eat' his designs and relegate them to obscurity and the world of 'Coulda been a contender' oddities. In fact, I may even invest!! :-)

When I first clicked on video my first thoughts were I am old-school and prefer the wood but as the video went on it opened my mind to new possibilities! Its a very exciting design, and as always a very excellent review and demo!

Regarding the adjustable string height bridge version for bass guitar; Please consider doing something similar for the six string models. It would enable a guitarist to convert the instrument from a standard electric six string to an electric dobro or lap steel style setup where the action needs to be much higher.
I'm also curious if you've developed a similar bridge for acoustic guitar? I play in many different tunings on a limited number of instruments and intonation drives me absolutely nuts! Your bridge would be a Godsend.

I think he is saying Delrin? It's used a lot in industrial applications as an easily tooled/machined plastic that is extremely heat resistant.

Wow Honestly such a pleasure to watch this. I can tell you this...If I had something like this when I was a gigging/touring musician in the mid 1990's to the mid 2000's it WOULD HAVE BEEN A DREAM! A guitar that needs no adjustment, that can be three different guitars with just popping in a module...thats just brilliant. I like the possibility of the upgrades as well (brass bridge) etc...For the starting price point of $399., I Need one! : ) The idea of the swap able modules reminds me a lot of the Dan Armstrong guitars (like the ones Joe Perry used to play), where you could swap different pickups easily. Such a fantastic video! I'm definitely going to keep my eye out for these!

@15:50 I'm pretty sure he means Delrin or Polyoxymethylene, an engineered thermoplastic developed b DuPont. I operated CNC's that made ball valve seals supplied to petrochemical companies. We machined billet extrusions to manufacture each seal per specifications using their proprietary designs.
This stuff is amazing...in it's natural state it looks and feels like regular white acetyl but a much higher density you can feel. It's strength, stiffness, low friction, and dimensional stiffness makes it great rust-proof option for metal, yes it can replace many metal applications. You can machine it to tolerances in ten-thousandths with minimal variances due to thermal expansion.
I've personally taken home 1/4 inch thick butt-ends of 5in. diameter billets and set them up as targets and shot them with .38 special, +P, .45auto, and every caliber below those with the shortest distance 10 feet.....not a dent, hardly a scratch....nothing but lead splatter.

Addendum: Fret wear. Even though it's very tough, Delrin *will* abrade... *however* it will *not* indent. But I believe based on my experience, it will abrade less than nickel or similar fret material, probably (not sure) it will abrade more than stainless steel. *Solution:* Drop-in/Pop-in fretboard. I bet the fretboard is machined; they could be CNC'd and rip out hundreds a day super cheap. Or if you prefer the sound of metal frets, CNC a groove in the raised portion and epoxy in metal frets of choice.

Not just some engineer who decided to design a guitar. He is a master luthier who builds very expensive acoustic guitars by hand. In a video on Boaz's channel he said prices start at around $8000 with some up to $60,000. And a very accomplished guitar player in his own right.
