I started reading more than one book at a time and found I tended to read more. My average reading per day when I am reading was around 80 pages. If I have two books that I switch back and forth every hour or so I find that I can do more like 125 pages per day.
So as Jim said "Common Sense is not Common Practice". I love the idea of scheduling 45 minutes per day to read and I'm going to start incorporating this in my life.
