I cried so much with this scene. The way that Anne looked in this scene, she looked exactly like my mom right before she died of lung cancer. She had little to no hair, she could barely say anything and needed help with everything and Anne's condition brought it all back from when she was diagnosed to her death. I never felt more connected to a movie in my entire life.
When i watched this, i started to cry when Fantine's voice started to break. I watched this again, i still cried at that part. I can't even sing the words (without the music): "Come to me, Cosette. The light is fading.", without crying.
In the book, Javert appeared out of nowhere and dropped the bomb that Valjean was an ex convict. The shock of this killed Fantine. Then the Confrontation scene follows.
[Fantine:] Cosette, it's turned so cold Cosette, it's past your bed time! You've played the day away And soon it will be night. Come to me, Cosette, the light is fading Don't you see the evening star appearing? Come to me and rest against my shoulder How fast the minutes fly away and every minute colder. [Jean Valjean:] Dear Fantine, Cosette'll be here soon Dear Fantine, she will be by your side. [Fantine:] Come, Cosette, my child, where did you go? [Jean Valjean:] Be at peace, be at peace evermore. [Fantine:] My Cosette... [Jean Valjean:] Shall live in my protection. [Fantine:] Take her now. [Jean Valjean:] Your child will want for nothing. [Fantine:] Good M'sieur, you come from God in heaven. Tell Cosette I love her And I'll see her when I wake...
French Version: FANTINE: It is so cold outside, The little girls are wise. They wait beside my bed, While the hourglass empties. My Cosette, the night is now descending, In the sky, the evening star is appearing. Close your eyes and forgive me, o my daughter, I always dreamed that I will fulfill Your need for a family. The misery is not the dying mother, But her child, the horror of men’s hearts, As the shadows are descending upon Earth, I will spend eternal night upon the bier. VALJEAN: Oh, Fantine! I have so little time, But Fantine, allow me to make this promise. FANTINE: Look, Monsieur! Watch her playing! VALJEAN: Sleep in peace, Rest in peace, my child. FANTINE: My Cosette… VALJEAN: She will be in my family. FANTINE: She is coming… VALJEAN: I will raise her as my daughter. FANTINE: Good monsieur, A good angel is descending upon you. VALJEAN: You will see her soon, I will fetch her myself. FANTINE: The light Is shining from the depths of your soul. VALJEAN: You will struggle no more. FANTINE: It lights up The broken heart of a woman. VALJEAN: Virtuous before God! FANTINE: Good monsieur, I will be very happy, To tell Cosette that a saint has descended upon Earth!

My condolences, Internet stranger. ;_;
Scheherazade Sorry for your loss. She's in a better place now...
I wish Anne had been in the movie longer, but she could not have been more perfect for this part. Master of emotions.
I cried like a baby when she said tell Cossete i love her and ill see her when i wake
Anne Hathaway is such an incredible actress. The genuine emotion she brought to this picture is awe inspiring.

I can't listen this song without crying.
The part when she says "my child, where did you go?" 😢😢😢
I'm so glad that they let Fantine die with some peace of mind here, *unlike in the book.* ;_;
what happened in the book?

I'm a little annoyed they changed it so much, but I agree with you.
I had a dear friend who loved this musical, she passed 5 days ago and sent me this song about one week before passing. I'm devastated...
This is song is made of weeping. Saddest moment in the entire film.
No matter how many times I listen to this song I always end up crying
[Fantine:]
Cosette, it's turned so cold
Cosette, it's past your bed time!
You've played the day away
And soon it will be night.
Come to me, Cosette, the light is fading
Don't you see the evening star appearing?
Come to me and rest against my shoulder
How fast the minutes fly away and every minute colder.
[Jean Valjean:]
Dear Fantine, Cosette'll be here soon
Dear Fantine, she will be by your side.
[Fantine:]
Come, Cosette, my child, where did you go?
[Jean Valjean:]
Be at peace, be at peace evermore.
[Fantine:] My Cosette...
[Jean Valjean:] Shall live in my protection.
[Fantine:] Take her now.
[Jean Valjean:] Your child will want for nothing.
[Fantine:]
Good M'sieur, you come from God in heaven.
Tell Cosette I love her
And I'll see her when I wake...
may god bless your mother and may she live happily in the garden of the lord
Words cant explain how my heart was just crushed
no one:
me: watching this to make myself cry for no reason
this song made me cry
I cried again just hearing it, imagine seeing it!!
So much emotion... beatifull!
French Version:
FANTINE: It is so cold outside,
The little girls are wise.
They wait beside my bed,
While the hourglass empties.
My Cosette, the night is now descending,
In the sky, the evening star is appearing.
Close your eyes and forgive me, o my daughter,
I always dreamed that I will fulfill
Your need for a family.
The misery is not the dying mother,
But her child, the horror of men’s hearts,
As the shadows are descending upon Earth,
I will spend eternal night upon the bier.
VALJEAN: Oh, Fantine!
I have so little time,
But Fantine, allow me to make this promise.
FANTINE: Look, Monsieur!
Watch her playing!
VALJEAN: Sleep in peace,
Rest in peace, my child.
FANTINE: My Cosette…
VALJEAN: She will be in my family.
FANTINE: She is coming…
VALJEAN: I will raise her as my daughter.
FANTINE: Good monsieur,
A good angel is descending upon you.
VALJEAN: You will see her soon,
I will fetch her myself.
FANTINE: The light
Is shining from the depths of your soul.
VALJEAN: You will struggle no more.
FANTINE: It lights up
The broken heart of a woman.
VALJEAN: Virtuous before God!
FANTINE: Good monsieur, I will be very happy,
To tell Cosette that a saint has descended upon Earth!
Tell Cossete I love her and I'll see her when I wake!...wow
I loved the movie but I have to say that the theater production was so much more powerful and emotional.
I'm sobbing right now... :'(
be strong, bless you
*hugs*
This is why the academy gave her that oscar not I Dreamed A Dream
Wonderful, but I'm sad that they left out the line, "But I will sing you lullabies and wake you in the morning."
@Kiana Ruiz While i was watching this, i was singing, too.
You are truly sent from god...
