Mackie Lunkey It wasn’t really a movie, more like a 3-part episode in the way it was written. Classic Phineas and Ferb, not much room for development, which is normally done gradually over time
I was In Disney world when it released. Apparently Dan was too. Met phineas and ferb and went back to my hotel room, got a Coca Cola and some popcorn, and watched it. Greatest night ever.
Honestly I didn't think it was too out of character for Phineas to become upset at Perry for learning his secret. I mean when you found out your pet who you had since you were very little has been been a secret agent all this time it's a little understandable to feel hurt. Plus I'm much prefer this upset Phineas over the one who was completely out of character for being angry at Candice in that Marvel's Avengers crossover special.
Glad I wasn't the only one who got weirded out at Phineas snapping at Candace like I get it, the stakes are high because it's superheroes but like Candace wasn't even annoying? She was trying to help. It would be more understandable if he got upset if Candace was explicitly sabotaging the plan like, oh I dont know, EVERY EPISODE OF THE GODDAMN SHOW??
Lapiz Lapoppy but she’s not really trying to sabotage them, just show the mom what they’re doing. And she always fails anyway. So actually messing up their plans multiple times would probably be super annoying. Especially because stuff almost never goes wrong for Phineas.
Lapiz Lapoppy Phineas rarely if ever gets mad, he just doesn’t have it in him. For some reason he never really cares about Candace’ negative intentions toward him, even though he knows It was strange at the time, although those villains with Dr D was hilarious, he was out of his league lmao
Phineas anger in this movie is understandable when looking at it from his perspective. He also was justified in getting angry at Candace in Mission Marvel since she kept getting in the way and messing things up and the sympathy i had for Candace in the episode went away when she went back to trying to bust her brothers.
I think that with Mission Marvel, he went from 0 to 10 a bit too fast. It's understandable for sure that he gets upset and angry, but I think the level of anger he reached was a bit much. With this film (2nd dimension), I think they did an alright job with Phineas's anger at Perry. I wish that maybe there was a bit more subtlety with his feelings throughout the film, but I'm not gonna complain too much.
*Candace:* _You're so busted! I can't wait for Mom to find out about this..._ *Phineas and Ferb's invention:* PHINEAS AND FERB'S INVENTION IS OUT. PEACE!
Candace: It's Too Small, I Will Never Ride It. Phineas: *Pulls Out A Gun.* Phineas: *Cocks Gun.* Phineas: *Shoots Candace.* Candace's Ghost: Mom, Phineas Shot Me! Phineas: She Can't See You, Or Hear You. Ferb: So You Finally Shot Our Annoying Sister.. Phineas: Yes, Now Let's Build The Universe Destroyer, That Also Destroys The Space Time Continum. The End!
Ironically, Dan Povenmire said that Stacy and Perry were supposed to interact in the movie but apparently it didn't work well in the story so it was cut. Either way, great video.
Heh heh. She eventually found out he was a secret agent, but she figured out that since she isn’t a member of the family she can know without him being relocated. This is why Stacy was always my favourite.
Fun fact: "Phineas and Ferb Get Busted!" was actually written as a potential series finale, just in case Phineas and Ferb were to only last one season (as was the case with the short-lived, criminally underrated Disney Channel cartoons "Dave the Barbarian" and "The Buzz on Maggie"). Similarly, as you correctly presumed in your retrospective on Phineas and Ferb as a whole, "Summer Belongs to You!" was also written as a potential end point for the show, because if Phineas and Ferb ended at season 2, it would have had 65 episodes (the standard run for a Disney TV series at the time).
think only season 3 doesn't have a real series finale type episode, season 2 getting the first tv film, Summer Belongs to You, and Rollercoaster the Musical (which ends with reusing every single character used previously in the series), season 4 has the specials and backdoor pilots
Love how he says the scene with all the inventions is reminiscent of avengers and avengers endgame when this movie was released before both of them! I only just realised this. Avengers copied Phineas and Ferb XD
@@MiloMurphysLaw fair point :) but still strange for them to reference something that hadn't come out yet. Unless Dan and Swampy to a classic call forward like they do! XD they like referencing things that haven't happened yet!
Likey2Draw no, the Avengers movies definitely copied the Phineas and Ferb movie. I was just saying it wouldn’t make sense to “sue them” like Chebic said because they’re both made by the same company.
Hmm, so a villain from an alternate timeline invades the current one with his whole army and it's up to the heroes to assemble everything and everyone they've ever made and met to go head to head in a massive battle? Sounds...familiar...
According to Wikipedia (so take it with a grain of salt) they said it's not completely cancelled and they may pick it up again if Candace Against the Universe does well. But again, I got that off Wikipedia.
This movie is a perfect example of a franchise rewarding its fans for continuing to watch the show, due all of the callbacks to almost every episode ever made up to that point and the plot itself being a what if question any fan of the show would have had by then. I think it's my favorite movie based off a cartoon to this day.
@@rainpooper7088 I just watched the pilot the other day and was taken aback from how savage Phineas was lmao. They should've kept him that way it was funny af
Great analysis, I agree with a lot here and you went into solid detail. There's actually some interesting production stuff that the Wiki goes into more detail on like how it originally conceived as an 11 minute episode or how those Vanessa scenes were the remnants of an entire scrapped subplot. (And she's still listed in the credits of the final film, whoops). Also, He's Doof was originally a slightly longer song and was retooled to be that quick gag. The demo can be found here on RUclips. I interviewed one of the show's writer Jon Colton Barry a few years ago, and we weirdly didn't focus on the film too much even though he was a writer on it (still brought it up of course), but I do wanna ask him if Buford 2's line is indeed a reference to a deleted scene or what.
4:34 What's even funnier is that Doof is saying PERRY peed on his couch but he witnessed Perry without his hat doing it and Doof always thinks Perry without a hat isn't Perry at all so it seems weird for him to say Perry peed on his couch
@@crunchy9934 Yes for the zillionth time, and even in this movie he still didnt learn anything, later on after that scene evil Doof showed him a picture of a platypus and then Perry and Doof had the same reaction he always had, and it didnt even matter anyway cuz he got his memory erased
This movie will, and always will be one of my favorite. It’s the reasons why alternate realities (or anything doing with portals) in cartoons fascinate me so much. It definitely had a big influence on me Also, THANK YOU for referencing the game and using the music from it. It was a pretty good game, but it was short and easy. The ideas, writing and concepts were REALLY good, if only it had a bigger budget
You can say all you want about Disney being obsessed with twist villains in the 2010s, but there's another trope they won't stop with: other dimensions or parents/relatives/guardians getting trapped in other dimensions. Now don't get me wrong, I think this movie is a genuine masterpiece. But think about it for a second... 2014: Big Hero 6. Callaghan is evil because his daughter got trapped in another dimension 2015: Gravity Falls and Ant-Man. Ford is freed from the portal and the whole "weird dimension" story arc starts. In Ant-Man, Janet gets stuck in the Quantum Realm in a flashback. 2016: "Gravity Falls: Journal 3" is released. We learn what happened to Ford in the portal. 2017: DuckTales 2017. Della gets trapped on the moon. It's not another dimension, but it's the same trope of "it should have been me. Now I have no way to bring them back". 2018: Ant-Man and the Wasp. The Quantum Realm and rescuing Janet becomes a major plot point. 2019: Star Vs. The Forces of Evil. Moon is trapped in the Magic Dimension.
This is when the series peaked imo. Would have been an amazing thing to end the series with, but I'm glad it went on longer, even if a lot that followed wasn't as good
Though for me, I would be happy if it ended with AT2D. (Like end the series in a big way, while being given us a great impression, even if we want more.)
I feel like it’s important that the first person to explain Perry being an agent to Phineas was alternate dimension Doofenshmirtz, who said “he’s not your pet, he’s using you, you’re just his cover”. So I get given that explanation how Phineas could be as upset as he was.
More emotional range in Phineas was so awesome to watch as a kid. I love extra "dimension" in characters, and breaking tonal status quo, even back then.
I was really surprised that you put Brand New Reality at #1. That has always been tied with Summer (Where Do We Begin) as my favorite song in the movie, and is easily my favorite sequence in the movie, so It's nice to see it get more recognition. It's very underrated.
19:32 that is called moire effect, in digital media it happens when a repeating pattern is displayed at a size that causes parts of the pattern to repeat at intervals that do not coincide with whole pixels, which creates a second repeating pattern of darker pixels being chosen over lighter ones (or viceversa) because there in't space for both at a given point, eventually when the original texture loops back to the beginning so does the moire effect pattern, in this case creating the stretched checkerboard thing shown in your video. The moire effect also happens outside digital media although it's a bit different, I'd explain how but I can't do it properly without visual aid and this comment is already far too long.
I remember when this movie first came out I was 9 and I was so so excited about this movie that I marked the date of release on my calendar and eagerly waited for it! Now I am 17 and I am excited about the new movie just like then! Some things never change.
If there is one thing I like in in a tv show made into a movie, it’s when it feels like an episode of the show. This movie and invader zim enter the florpus are some of my favorites tv show movies. Why? Because they don’t feel like they are forcing you to watch characters do things we know they wouldn’t do.
I remember watching the end of this movie being so sad but in a heartfelt way it was so cool...but then they played a episode of a.n.t farm and i imediatly started sobbing
Phineas and Ferb is still one of my favourite shows ever, maybe my most favourite. The movie is a masterpiece, and I think Candace Against the Universe will be similar.
I also was late to this series. I stopped watching most new cartoon shows since the '90s ended, with most cartoons no longer up to the quality of that decade. I just dismissed the title as just another lame post-'90s show, sight unseen. Then, one day in 2011 one of my nephews had it on and I overheard one of Doofenshmirtz's monologues, which was hilarious. I watched and was hooked immediately.
here’s something that i don’t understand. when trying to get back to their own dimension, phineas and the gang have to go through who knows how many dimensions to get there. but when doofenshmirtz is releasing his robots, the portal goes straight from the 2nd dimension to the 1st one, kind of contradicting the whole “going counter clockwise would take 8 million gigawatts of energy therefore overloading the local power grid” thing.
high-level shoutouts to that DVD, discovering the 2nd Dimension menu was such a breakthrough to 11-y/o me. also the 50ft Sister Doof/Monogram commentary on it is pure character gold.
This is the movie where Phineas and Ferb weren't just GOING to do it all, they were ABLE to do it all. I think you might've messed up some wording there bud And I know that's not his exact quote but that's what he said meaning-wise
I think Ferb did speak in Perry's defence when Phineas accused Perry of not trying to prevent anything from happening. Ferb corrected him by telling him that Perry peed on the couch to try and divert everyone's attention.
Great review I really liked your way of analyzing, one thing I don’t really agree much is Phineas’ characterization. *This is gonna be a really long analysis, you’ve been warned! TwT* You mentioned that Phineas and Ferb usually cheer other’s negativity up and always help others whenever they have a problem and this kinda involves the point why Phineas gets angry at Perry: trust. This is an essential word in this movie because all this movie is about is the conflict between Phineas and Perry, dealing with the trust between each other (I agree with Ferb’s being a third wheel to it though that was a bit let down). As you mentioned, yes, we know that Perry is afraid to loose is family and Phineas doesn’t have the chance to know that because he’s took by emotions, and here gets my main point. Phineas always lived days with the goal of reaching the greatest fun ever, no doubts about it, but in his birthday’s episode “Clip ‘O Rama” (I think it’s the name) he mentions how important is for him the people around him, yes he’s having the best summer of all, but it wouldn’t have been possible for him without his family, his friends and showing how much they means to him and even if Perry is not there, we know that he’s referring to him as well because we know from the episode “Oh, there you are Perry” that Phineas gets REALLY worried for him and for showing how close they are, he can recognize his pet between tons of other platypuses that SEEMS exactly the same, Phineas sees something more in Perry then any regular pet, because is not only his pet, it’s in fact “he’s still part of the family”, Perry is his family, is his friend and this is also shown on the episode “Where’s Perry Part 2”, my fave parts of the episodes were in fact this relationship again, even if it came out after the movie. Back to ATSD, since Phineas, as we said, always gave a great value to friendship, people he loves and *trust* discovering that a part of his family was hiding from them such a secret, that they unintentionally helped an evil scientist to get in an evil dimension, the opposite of what the boys usually face since they befriend everyone and trust everyone at Danville, feeds Phineas into a genuine betray for him and the fact that it was an evil dictator telling the truth it didn’t help to highly the situation and conflict. About the pamphlet, Phineas was driven by emotions and trow that away for how big that revelation hurt him and we already saw that emotions could drive Phineas out of his usual control, just think about “Summer Belongs To You” when the fear of not arriving at home, have nothing and with such a huge responsibility put him into a genuine condition of helplessness. Emotions always played a big role for Phineas and here, with the addiction of the fact that this betrayal came from someone he blindly trusted, really hurt him and is believable for him and true too his character. When Perry was in danger he didn’t have a single second of hesitation because, even after what happened, Phineas still loves his pet, he cares and he would ever left him behind even after a betrayal, because he’s still part of a family (also this is not shown but I also think that he felt guilty for Perry’s captures, is not shown but I believe he is) and the first instincts for him is to immediately to go and save Perry, even without a plan, A PLAN, Phineas’ best attribute, because his emotions took him again and the urge to save Perry as fast as they could made him not make something that he’d surely do if it wasn’t for the situation. Now let’s talk about Perry; yes, we saw that Perry is afraid to loose his owners and in this movie, his fears came true and he can’t really do anything about it, also because he knows how much Phineas is hurt, and knowing the consequences of this discovery made him even more upset even if, in Perry’s face, we see that he’s far more guilty for had betrayed his owners other then had break the most important OWCA’s rule. But with all of that being said, why we should know Perry really trusts on Phineas and Ferb? In the show we always saw Perry being a professional agent who never wanted to being paired, he always did things alone and never asked, need or wanted the help from anyone, how shall we know that he’d trust the boys enough to help him in that situation since, as we see in the movie, we see Perry facing the Doofs alone, the platyborg and let the dictator get him to protect Phineas and Ferb and this is how is highlight his nature: he works alone, even if he had the intention to surrender to Doofenshmirtz for protect the boys, he didn’t show the trust that Phineas always had for him and seeing that his pet STILL is doing things without them is an ulterior punch in the guts for him, because he’s right, there’s no more trust between them and this both hurts Phineas and Perry, both in their own way, here, when Phineas chases Perry, for the first time ever, something we never seen and even imagined, in this specific moment, the relationship reached his lower point and it just heartbreaking, each for his character with his own reasons, yet, similar as they don’t see each other in the same way anymore. It’s in the lava scene, aka the best scene in the entire movie and also show for me, that we finally get to see the trust that Perry could give to Phineas, Phineas’ desire to see if his pet really trusted him, Perry going against his nature of saving the people who loves and put all of their lives into Phineas’ plan, something he had never done once, looking in Phineas’ eyes, even if he witnessed that the remote didn’t work and thrown by someone he never saw, Perry decided to let go, let go his duty as an agent and give to Phineas the real demonstration of his love and, most important, his trust. We could argue that later on Phineas says “so you trusted us after all” saying that it doesn’t make sense, but in the scene before that, Phineas is now ready to help Perry with Ferb, he’s now trusty on the platypus again and wants to help more then ever, but Monogram rejects them and tells Perry to send them home, at first Phineas tries to convince Perry, he’s convinced that his pet now will let him help him after what happened, but Perry removes his collar, the symbol of their friendship since they were really little, and gives it to Phineas, leaving the boy confused in the moment and then leaves, waving proudly. Here, Phineas doesn’t get upset or angry, he holds the collar and accepts to go home even if he knows they could give a great help to Perry that’s because the lava scene has affected him, he finally saw Perry’s trust towards him and doesn’t want to doubt about that, even though clearly Perry seems to make sure they’re safe at home and not help, but then, the collar lead the boys to his secret lair and trough the same collar, the symbol of their friendship, Phineas and Ferb actually see how much Perry trusted them because the platypus, as the deleted scene says, did witnessed the boys’ inventions, he saved the invention and in really danger occasion he knew he could have use them, let them Phineas and Ferb use them, of course seeing Perry’s development he could have made them in case of huge necessity, he didn’t gave it much value until that day, he does trust the boys enough to gave them their inventions back and this trust was worth it, because now Phineas, is more then sure, that his pet does trust them and the hug between them is the sweetest demonstration of this love and trust, a trust stronger then it never been. I also wanna add how Perry gave his hand to Phineas and let him go with him to stop definitely Doofenshmirtz and stop everything, ADDICTION TO THIS TRUST! Aaaaand what else can I say, this movie is a masterpiece and I wanted to share my points of why Phineas’ is in character and the relationship with Perry worked out perfectly, I consider this the best PnF product ever made and with the movie coming out on Friday I still have doubts that it would top this movie, yet, like my Phinny boy, I’m optimist and I can’t really wait to watch it! Sorry for the really long comment, if you’ll ever read it eheh, still a great video! ^^
Yeah I agree about Ferb. He's actually my favorite, but he didn't get to do much of anything here. It seemed like a shame. Heck even in their specials like "Night of the Living Pharmacists", he got to do a good deal more.
This movie is better than Candace vs. The Universe but it also could have served as the series finale much like Regular Show: The Movie. While both shows are great, they've been going on for a long time prior to the movie, and nothing major ends up changing in their world after the movie, especially in Phineas and Ferb case.
Well since you brought it up 1:26 i’ve always been very fond of Summer belongs to you, it was something I remember watching a lot as a kid and getting the songs in my head all the time. Very nostalgic for me and anytime I listen to a song from it on Spotify I feel all warm and gassy inside.. no but really it was something that I really liked as a kid and holds a special place in my heart. Oh also, I too stand that Summer where do we begin is probably the best song from the movie in my opinion. love to hear more Phineas and Ferb talk, looking forward to the new movie and whatever else you have in store Nick.
When I heard Olivia Olson sang one of the songs, my Jaw dropped. It shouldn’t be that shocking but it was pretty neat to know that the voice behind Marceline was a part of one of my favorite movies
What I love about this movie is the sheer amount of callbacks and references that are there For example, that skull that Perry gets stuck in at the first confrontation, it had antlers and horns, the exact same as the hat Doof’s dad wore There were references to him absolutely everywhere, the backstories, stuff like that

@@yoitsmichelle5838 Still, he got way to angry too fast.
Lapiz Lapoppy
Phineas rarely if ever gets mad, he just doesn’t have it in him. For some reason he never really cares about Candace’ negative intentions toward him, even though he knows
It was strange at the time, although those villains with Dr D was hilarious, he was out of his league lmao
Phineas anger in this movie is understandable when looking at it from his perspective. He also was justified in getting angry at Candace in Mission Marvel since she kept getting in the way and messing things up and the sympathy i had for Candace in the episode went away when she went back to trying to bust her brothers.
I mean she did it to make the things dissappear
I think that with Mission Marvel, he went from 0 to 10 a bit too fast. It's understandable for sure that he gets upset and angry, but I think the level of anger he reached was a bit much.
With this film (2nd dimension), I think they did an alright job with Phineas's anger at Perry. I wish that maybe there was a bit more subtlety with his feelings throughout the film, but I'm not gonna complain too much.

It is a masterpiece. This is definitely in my top 5 movies
Poor Dave The Barbarian, he deserved way better.
Getting the Band Back Together has a finale feeling.

For sure

Callaghan is evil because his daughter got trapped in another dimension
2015: Gravity Falls and Ant-Man.
@The OxyScape I completely forgot about Coco! Good call. That totally fits in with this trope!

I think Ferb did speak in Perry's defence when Phineas accused Perry of not trying to prevent anything from happening. Ferb corrected him by telling him that Perry peed on the couch to try and divert everyone's attention.
0:07 Ohh so THAT’s where that came from.
This movie is great. One of the best anime movies right next to the SpongeBob movie.

Great review I really liked your way of analyzing, one thing I don’t really agree much is Phineas’ characterization.
*This is gonna be a really long analysis, you’ve been warned! TwT*
You mentioned that Phineas and Ferb usually cheer other’s negativity up and always help others whenever they have a problem and this kinda involves the point why Phineas gets angry at Perry: trust.
