- Vampire Weekend's Father Of The Bride has been the surprise hit of the summer. It's an album fully of joyful riffs, emotive lyrics, and a whole bunch of reptiles. And whilst the album harks back to those indie rock days in Colombia, it has a brave new sound which embraces dozens of new sonic landscapes. Gordon Smart sat down with band frontman Ezra Koenig to talk through the inspirations and influences behind new music, and tell the tales behind from classic tracks. Combined with a live performance taken from the band's soundcheck at London's Islington Assembly Hall, Koenig breaks down This Life, Harmony Hall, Sunflower, and, of course, A Punk.
Father Of The Bride (2019) is the fourth album from Vampire Weekend, following Modern Vampires Of The City (2013), Contra (2011), and Vampire Weekend (2008).
Radio X's Soundcheck Sessions take you behind the scenes, behind the crowds, to see a band at their rawest, at their most intimate. On a stage, with no adoring fans, fancy light shows, or pyros; just them and their tunes.

What's your favourite track on the new album?
Radio X HOW LONG
Harmony Hall or My Mistake
hold you now
There's something about the first track that just kicks me in the head. I could have lived with an entire acoustic album with this kind of sound and poetry:
Why's your heart grown heavy, boy, when things were feeling light?
Turning this June morning into some dark judgment night
This ain't the end of nothing much, it's just another round. I can't carry you forever, but I can hold you now
Sympathy. so good
This is what happens when you write music looking to make art instead of money. Beautiful.
a lot of the songs are formulaic pop but uh yeah okay
@@twod0ves Formulaic music can be art too.
By far the most music is made with that intention, you just have to look for it. It doesn't come to you.
@@strange.person That too. Any piece of music ever made is art. Doesn't matter how shitty it sounds or how formulaic it is.
I’m surprised reusing the outro refrain “I don’t want to live like this” of Finger Back on Harmony Hall wasn’t elaborated on
Their music reminds me of seasons for some reason certain parts feel like a fresh spring morning others like a crisp fall day.
pitsburg11 I completely agree!! Some of their first album makes me thing of autumn, but other parts of it remind me of summer! Contra is very summery to me as well.
Yes!
I literally have only known about them since January but they're already my favorite band.
I feel like with this album Ezra has proven to be the voice of his generation. Absolutely amazing phenomenal work.
So Koenig makes mention of the "Baggy sound", I look it up on Wikipedia and find half of the bands in my CD collection from the early 90s. So Koenig was right, we didn't even know what that was in America. But I'm more impressed that he did, as he would have been like 8-10 years old around that time!
Totally. But, u kno, music when u’re 8 to 10, to 12, etc., actually affect us all more than we might think (at least to me, and imo). Loved U’re Unbelievable tho, as a ‘78 baby, respectively.) :)
We also can be affected/inspired by music regardless of year, I love 60s and 70s music but I wasn’t born until 91 🤷🏼♀️
Great feature
I love vampire weekend. True artist!
True ARTISTS*
This was a nicely put album
1:38 nice shoes and socks Ezra, very nice
"Vampire Weekend's Father Of The Bride has been the surprise hit of the summer." ???? where's the surprise???
veeg anne the fact that they haven’t released an album in 6 years?
what summer?
B Naylor leave
@@bdawg333 You're entitled to your opinion of course (although I am not sure why you put a random generalization in there, makes you look like a real asshole), but at I first I also thought this is their weakest album, but after 2 or 3 more listens it really started growing on me. Now I think it's either their best or their second best project.
I thought that too. A band with a huge following releasing an album that has been anticipated for 6 years is a surprise?
Wow so he cites “Unbelievable” as an influence. Definitely similarities with the rhythm. Never heard the “baggy” song term before.
how long bc it was the first one I ever heard. I also love married in a gold rush for some reason and unbearably white!!!!!
Nice to know that Tommy king played on Harmony hall!
style boyz tshirt hahaha
What guitar Brian Robert Jones playing on Sunflower I need to know, looks like a mix of different Fenders.
Paddy O Connor looks like a Jazzmaster? Maybe a Mustang.
It's a company called Bilt, they've got very unique headstocks that you can spot from a mile away.
Jaguar
Paddy O Connor bilt ss zaftig
Trevor Browning quite interesting really. They’re using a Fender Starcaster styled headstock and a Fender Jazzmaster styled body.
ngl skip to the good bit is so much better than unbelievable
I like Halloumi!!!!

Vampire weekend are like a millennial talking heads
i think that's animal collective
Lol, I dig that.
I had that same thought
I don't agree at all, though I love both
I'm old enough to remember the Talking Heads when they were still together. I think they are just as inventive musically, but they don't seem to have the same negative dynamic (i.e., David Byrne). Hopefully they will be creating music together for many more years to come. This album is brilliant.
I thought the drummer was egoraptor for a sec lol
He has a really weird name
I love vampire weekend but I was a little disappointed with the album overall. Having said that, some of the singles are great. Harmony hall in particular explores a sound I haven’t heard from them before.
Bloody amazing album, can't stop listening to it! The rhythms and melodies are complex, it's experimental, and the lyricism is fucking poetry. Some pretty universal and timeless art in there
