You bought a traditional swedish house. Nice.
It is not common to leave everything, it must have been a old person living there and the kids (or the state?, if there was no relatives) just did not want to take care of it.
Think before you get rid of stuff because it could be hard to replace. For example the kitchen stowe that provides you with hot water and heat. It might just be one of those that you can use for heating the hole house connected to radiators.
As you are in middle of nowhere I suggest that you keep as many firplaces as you could because electricity is not to be trusted, it could be shortages for weeks during very cold winters…
Just keep in mind where you are. Just a tip..

    • @buildaway
      @buildaway  Год назад +6

Let me clarify, all the houses we looked at, would leave all the stuff in it for us to keep/throw away. In this case, it was his kids selling it indeed. And we definitely won't be throwing away stuff with a function / value. Thanks for the tips!

It's so nice when people actually moves to the cabins or small houses around Sweden and actually starting a life ther.e . It's alot of houses no one lives in and it's important that the whole country has people living there. Unfortunately I see way to much buyers getting cheap summer vacation houses and spending 1-2 weeks there every year then and leave. My old town has the same problem. Germans and Dutch people owns now almost 50% of the houses but never spend any time there. It's like a ghost town and very bad for the development. If owning a house they should use use it, not just own it in my opinion. Hope you guys have a great life here and good luck!

    Välkomna till Sverige!
The upstairs’ room is a so called “sommarrum” (summer room) that was only used during the warmer season. Before modern heating, when houses were heated with stoves, people lived on the first floor exclusively during the winter. The whole family then normally only used the kitchen plus the living room and closed the rest of the house ‘til summer. It’s a lovely room you got there. The wallpaper is adorable and looks to be in good condition. I hope you are able to keep it as it is!
Really the whole house just looks wonderful with all the original details and vintage lamps, wallpaper and furniture. The 1950s spice rack in the kitchen with the little containers for example is called “Redahylla” and is very sought after in the Swedish vintage community. Best of luck to you!

At 03.40 when you open the door to the barn you can see metal sheets against the wall.
Those are commonly used when we prepare firewood. You buy fresh logs (or neely cut fireeood if you don't want to cut and cleave yourself) cut, cleave and then stack the firewood outside to dry until next year. To protect the stacked firewood from rain and snow those metal sheets are laid on top of the stack and weighed in place with stones.
The year after we put the firewood indoors to use.

So many younger people moving to Sweden and buying these "summer" homes. It would not be necessary to insulate anything if you are only there in the summer season so you are essentially starting from scratch. I LOVED seeing your "drawings" for the little house and gardens. That is an extra touch that many RUclipsr's don't show the channel watchers. The gardens seem well thought out and the amount of sun you will get for a short growing season is great. That "root cellar" will be a must to get ready for storage. I grew up with grandparents who had a "successful" root cellar storing. most items wrapped in newspaper and placed in sand so they would not freeze in the winter. We had raised trays in the cellar. Your mechanical engineering background will be a most needed skill in the renovations.

Thank you for your message! Nice to hear you like the drawings! We do too. It helps us to get an idea of what things will look like.
The garden has a lot of sun indeed. It will hopefully be great for growing our own food. Great to hear how your grandparents used the root cellar. We need to repair the door frame so we can close it off properly. Then we will use it next winter.

You really have a lot of work to do. However most of this land has buildings that are in great condition. I understand you wanting to make it yours, but I would be happy with everything as it is except the small and large house need bathrooms added. I find it interesting the way you start your garden space. In Canada we would simply plow the soil and then top it with grass clippings, leaves, and some fertilizer.
I am a 🇨🇦currently wintering is Phoenix Arizona. It’s nice to get away from the winter conditions as I am in my 70’s. Luckily my husband and I am still in good health.
Wishing you and your wife all the best in your new adventure.

Fabulous tour from the start. I would keep the chalet, no point in ridding. You have some tall overshadowing trees, that will limit sun exposure and have potential to fall onto your buildings in storms, do you plan to fell any?

    • @buildaway
      @buildaway  11 месяцев назад

All the trees that can hit our buildings are to north of them. So they won't be blocking any sun. They could definitely fall into them though. We're still thinking what to do with them as they're close to the property line as well. And felling them would mean that we wouldn't have any trees of our own on that side.. Keep you posted

    Mooi!

    Hi there!
Just discovered your channel this morning, watched this video, now subscribed, will watch the rest asap.
What a wonderful video, very well done; tells the complete story and overview of your property.
Absolutely gorgeous piece of property, how wonderful to have all the structures and in pretty good shape.
It was nice the former owners left so many treasures, furniture and other materials, it would be so much fun to sort through it all and be able to use some.
The plans you have for the property and buildings sounds very well thought out. The tiny house is adorable and will make a good " tiny house" while you're developing the rest. Personally, I would keep the cabin and not tear it down. It looks in good shape and could be a part of your compound in some way.
Excited to see your progress and design ideas and collect some tips. Thank you.

I love the cabin, the little house and main house. I think you should keep the cabin and make it a guest bedroom for the warmer seasons, or a studio to do your editing and such for your channel or maybe an art studio or crafting studio. I follow another person that did the same thing as you are trying to do and you should check out her channel as well. Main home and a cabin and she is remodeling the inside. Combined some rooms to make a larger kitchen and such. Her channel name is Roaming with Rosie. She did the back packing and living in a tent and then bought a home in Sweden in the woods. I just joined your channel and I am excited to see what will happen with your renovations!

Do you know, that especially in Värmland there were/are a lot of people of Finnish origin - known as Skogsfinnar or "Forest Finns"? They moved there voluntarily or involuntarily during the late 1500's-1600's, because Sweden wanted them to inhabit the empty forests.
Later they were heavily oppressed and forcefully Swedified. Finns were imprisoned and their houses burnt. Using Finnish language was forbidden and reading Finnish books became a crime.
Finns were even forced to emigrate to the colony of New Sweden in America, where the Finns became a majority. The iconic American wooden frontier cabin is of Finnish origin.
Still the Finnish culture survived until 1960's, when the last Finnish-speaking Forest Finns died. Today the culture of the Forest Finns is reviving and people in Sweden are searching for their true roots.
Today c. 1,700,000 Swedes and 500,000 Norwegians have Forest Finnish roots - e.g. Prince Daniel of Sweden included.
In addition to that there are c. 220,000 Finnish-speakers in Sweden. Altogether there are over 700,000 people of 1st-3rd generation Finnish roots.

Hi. I am a old Swed ,and i heard you were going to lay out cardboard on the weistland, Dont, way i can garanti you are going to get a hugh ant colloni with egg in miljons .You have forestland in the nabourhood and there live Forest ants and a red ant that is nearley impossible to get ridd of and they bite horrible.you have probably even horseants in some old stumps out there. You can cut the gras and rake it of and even drive a cultivator over it and as finnich in one year lay black plasticfoil over that you take away before you cultivate and rake of the weed. often that weed will live in two years before you will bee free from it. Well you do as you wish but i have had own farm and done that misstake and got to suffer for that. The weistland is probably an old potatoland . If you have chanse to hire a traktor with plow so plow it and let it lay that year and do it again next year = two years . there is a chanse if there are turf you got yellow potatoworms and if you do like that they freez to daeth and you got a good potato land. Finland is like Sweden - there are a lot of old and also rather knew houses in the countryside - often with big plots of land. More often than not they are affordable - of course depending on the size of the land, the size and condition of the buildings etc.
Also the more North or East you go - and further from the nearest town - the cheaper the properties are.
With e.g. 100,000 € you'll have a lot of options, but you can get something from somewhere even by well under 50,000 €. You can search for options e.g. from Etuovi or Oikotie.
And yes - we welcome with open arms people, who are ready and willing to live and renovate those buildings!
