Developed by Red Storm Entertainment and published by Ubisoft, Ghost Recon was released in November, 2001 for PC. Desert Siege and Island Thunder were both released in 2002. The release of Ghost Recon marked a defining moment for tactical shooters by introducing a whole new take on the genre and refining the gameplay.

Having done my time in the army in a combat mos, this is probably one of the most realistic games I’ve played. You complained about enemy accuracy and the lack of flash grenades, though it is not unrealistic to expect someone to hit a person at 300 yards with one or two shots. Flash grenades aren’t a thing in real life either; yes they exist, but they are not used.
I wish there were more games out there with low health and high accuracy as seen in this game.
Although the creators may not have intended for AI’s to shoot at random objects in suppression mode, this does actually happen on the battlefield as the point of suppressing fire is to divert the enemy’s attention and to keep them in one spot. To accomplish that all you need is to shoot randomly in their direction with controlled bursts.
Last, although the graphics aren’t as good as games today, oddly enough this game does do better with lightning and graphics at a long range. Most games today add so much lighting and color crap that it is no longer realistic. Look out your window, you can actually see 200 meters out and people don’t glow in the dark.
I appreciate your input nice hearing the opinion of someone who's been in this kind of combat critique the game.
My only argument about the AI is that they react way too quickly as if they were already waiting for you even if they didn't know you were there. The second I turn a corner I get hit *every* time which doesn't seem very real to me.
@@NotHere2SellCookies have you fired a single shot? Everyone one the entire map would be on high alert in real life. Go watch some Ukrainian trench fighting videos for more references to how quickly people raise their weapons
@@LittleYorgee That's what I mean though. Even when I haven't fired a shot or alerted the enemy in any way I still get killed the split second I turn a corner like 90% of the time unless the target is facing away from me. I know soldiers can have very quick reactions but that just seems like a bit too much.

"They can easily pick you off from ludicrous distances even with weapons such as pistols and submachine guns" - Unless those are headshots, your body armor should stop them on your soldiers, since distance plays a factor in weapon ballistics. Also, enemies may not be completely randomized in terms of placement, but they will react differently each time you play the game.
Still among my top 10 favorite games of all time. I remember how hard it was when I was a kid but as I grew older I was able to make it through whole missions with no quicksave and no casualties (in part due to memorization). Sometimes I could spawn in one soldier and take out the whole map. This game is amazing.

Upon digging out some of my oldies-but-goldies, Ghost Recon immediately came to mind; thank you for pointing out the mod. I was already remembering the solutions that I had worked out for some of the original GR missions, and that was depressing. Now I can enjoy some of that old (good stuff) content with refreshed goals and activities.

I originally had ghost recon for the PS2 and gave it away to gamestop years ago. About a year ago I bought Ghost Recon along with Desert Siege and Island Thunder on steam and at the beginning of this year I started using the mods for this game. I played Year of the Monkey and War of Infamy and I have to say that the mods alone make this game replayable again and again. I just started the Heroes Unleashed mod this week and even though it's the same campaign, by God it just proved this game will never get old even though it continues to age.
The original Ghost Recon video games will forever be a classic. The Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon strategy/tactical/shooter video games is always fun and still holds up till today! I also recently started playing Heroes Unleashed and it's amazing so far!

While it's true that Ghost Recon took a more broad-strokes design approach in the future, and just turned into normal shooters, the surprising thing is that the PC versions of the Advanced Warfighter games still retain that tactical gameplay of the originals, because they were made by a developer that were big fans of them.
I'd definitely recommend you give them a look for future reviews, maybe.
+WWEDX2k7 of course. It would be safe to assume we will review sequels and almost any game from most genres. Unless it's multiplayer only, we're usually open to it. GRAW and other GR titles are on the list.
Another gem to look at is the original Operation Flashpoint (A.K.A. ArmA Cold War Assault). Its indirect sequels Dragon Rising and Red River are also great in their own way, but do not hold the candle to either the original or the ArmA series.
I bought them second hand from people, they're pretty cheap.

Used to play this game a lot as a kid but never fully understood what I was doing which led to a lot of frustrating moments. Now that I’m older I’m revisiting and finally know the understanding to actually play the game is so awesome.
I've just download Heroes Unleashed. 20+ GIGS. Good Lord. Looks like I'll never need to play another game.

I have the originals for the ps2 and I have played the Xbox version. I remember playing this game and realizing I could command my team with my ps2 headset via voice commands. They worked pretty well. I also hated being spotted and shot at by an enemy on the other side of the map through a forest etc. I really enjoy your reviews and am glad I discovered your channel.

I feel like this is a really good example of min maxing how to have shooting in a game and make it work.. not having a first person animation, and despite that I still feel like this game has some of the most excellent weapons feedback of any shooter, from the way that the reticle blooms the sound the hits and The animations.. like this is such a good framework to take and apply to a modern game, and I think there's something to be said about setting up your ballistics and your recoil patterns and your feedback loops before working on your first person animation, because if it works without a first person animation then you know you've got something going on, next thing would be not screw up your first person animation like most games do nowadays.. but just getting this part down.. especially that hit, I still think that's one of the best blood it's in any game, despite the resolution and fidelity.

I remember this games multiplayer being absolutely scary. Headphones on, creeping through the level, BOOM dead. Heart attack.
they should remake this game with current graphics and each player control his squad of 6 people (AI) and make this multiplayer, like 6 squads of 5+1 you, vs other team. That would be the hottes shit around, better then current games out there.

This is my favorite war game and I’m glad I’m not alone In feeling that the 1st ghost recon is amazing , I’m looking for a community that has the same passion and love for the first ghost recon but I don’t know how to go about it. I would love to play online on Xbox etc.

I was playing this game for like weeks now..I have the original box from back then.
And..I just had the thought like..It would profit Ubisoft to remake this game with todays graphics and AI technology and generic gaming technology of today.
I’m two years late but no I don’t think it would benefit them financially compared to the games they put out now that nickel and dime for cosmetics and season passes. Pretty sure most of the teams that made their classic tactical shooters have moved on or passed away, sadly. But hey at least some smaller studios are trying to revive the tactical genre. Ready or Not just hit it’s open alpha and is due to be out of early access next year. It’s not quite SWAT4 or anything but it’s pretty great and has a lot of the same ideas and options, ai is my only gripe since they can one bang you while looking away from you or they’ll just run through the whole map when you ask for compliance but it’s still a great and very tense time of room clearing, hostage saving and perp arresting (or killing if you agitate them enough, just remember to report it to TOC😉)
@@derpthegr8689 So essentialy its more serious in terms of the action and reporting. As a Swat 3 fan, i think i will enjoy Ready or not.
So, what I noticed changed when I was playing SWAT4 co-op with pros and gradually got better at the game, and what I noticed when you were playing and complaining about the enemy often shooting you before you could react, is rushing in and jerking the mouse to the side because you get jumpscared when the enemy notices you. You have to unlearn that. You need to be able to react quickly while having a steady hand. I remember seeing the same thing with one particular guy annoying who boasted about how he's played SWAT 3 and he kept coming up with new tactics, but whatever he tried the second he saw an enemy he'd end up wasting half a magazine, injuring civilians, his teammates, running out of ammo and dying quickly when he was the only one left. I realised I had been doing the same thing as well while I was fairly new. If you manage to learn the specifics of how many shots it takes to kill an enemy and keep your aim steady while moving quickly from target to target, you will have at least a far higher chanche of taking out multiple enemies before getting killed. Also, at 15:48, you should have kept moving to the left while keeping your crosshairs on the enemy. And don't stop moving even when he starts shooting. There was plenty of cover between the two of you, but standing in one place when you are that close is generally a bad idea - save it for when you are sniping.
Just replayed the game after like 8 years of not touching it. Man, what a game.
Still to this day for me it's one of the best tactical shooters. It's such a shame to see were the series went from here.
When i first played this game when i was like 10, i only ever got to the 6th mission then would stop because it always seem so hard. Then i'd download a bunch of mods from the time and just play the multiplayer with full squads doing firefight everytime. It was always great fun!
And just the other day i decided to actually play through the full campaign and man it was alot easier then i remember!
Took me till 20 years after the game was released to finish it, and i enjoyed every second!
Love this & great synopsis of the "state of tac. shooters" today & Ghost Recon(PC)'s place in history. I played every shooter from Wolfenstein3D & Doom on a x286, to Duke Nuke'em, all the Quakes & UnReals, GoldenEye, Half-Life, u name it but it was Rainbow Six:Rouge Spear that changed my life. No health meter, no power ups, no med packs, #% u couldnt even jump & if u got hit mo than twice u were done & no respawns. It made me value my life & every round in every mag. Where slow was smooth & smooth was fast. That R:6 game engine & play mechanic left the killhouse for city streets & wilderness for Ghost Recon(PC) & I was hooked. Consoles rule the world now & its been a slow death for mil-sims. Even R6:Vegas turned 3rd person cover based.. SWAT, Red Orch, Op Flashpoint became ARMA, Squad, Project Reality.. im still tryna fill that same void.

I've been playing the first ghost recon recently and I am really enjoying it. Enjoying it far more than GH2
Nice review! I don’t agree with what you say about quicksave and randomized enemy placement though, because you make it sound as if these two issues are somehow connected. Most games that do enemy placement randomly will reset the enemies‘ positions only after a complete relaunch of the mission, not after a quickload. So quicksave abuse leading to bullshit trial and error gameplay will still be a problem even if the game has randomized enemy placements.
Quicksave abuse leads to bad gameplay and is a problem in many games. The best way to avoid it is...don’t do it. Limit yourself to 3-5 saves at major milestones during the missions. It requires a bit discipline but it pays off. You will start playing in a much more tactical way and start using tactics that you might not use when abusing quicksave. For example, you start clearing rooms with grenades before entering them to minimize the risk for your team.
That being said, randomized enemy placement a la SWAT 4 would be great for replayability. Personally, i tend to replay games I like every 3 or 4 years or so, which means I forget the enemy positions by that time, but if someone’s into replaying the campaigns more often, random placement would be a great plus.

WOOOW great review my friend. I played this game so much as a kid on my PS2 prolly 1000hours. I know all the enemies on elite missions or firefights. But i didnt know about mods on the pc to it, seems great. Thanks
There is a first person weapon mod that enables weapon models. Its not perfect the head clips trough and the gun also but you can get used to it sadly it isn't working with jungle storm
+videolookertube we did find that as well as a third-person mod. We opted not to review them but maybe in the future we will.

It's nice to see OGR getting some attention but if you don't pay attention to team deathmatch online then you missed 80% of what made Ghost Recon 1 sp special.
You forgot to mention Brothers in Arms. Earned in Blood is the best tactical shooter I've ever played.
If you plan to continue covering tactical shooters, I highly recommend Operation Flashpoint (personally, Dragon Rising > Red River). There was at least one older title, but I have no idea how you could get a copy.

Arma Armed Assailt are Spiritual successor to Operation Flashpoint Cold war crisis. Reason why games are called Arma not Operation Flashpoint because OFP are trademarked by Codemasters. So Bohemia interative renamed next games in series Arma.
Dragon rising is not true operation flashpoint , ARMA is what you should recommend but I personally believe not even ARMA able to reach level of cold war crisis

I always wondered, was Tom Clancy's "Sum of all fears" cannon to the Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six and the Ghost Recon series? Because Ghost recon and sum of all fears are so similar graphically speaking for the time

hey man! heroes unleashed just hit ver 1.0 not long ago, not sure whats all different, but it might make for a good quick video to run through the update changes.
Anyone else also think of arma or insurgency when it comes to tactical shooter franchises?
This game with Heroes Unleashed and other mods like DeCent is pretty much the best COOP tactical shooter you can play. I highly recommend getting some guys together and giving it a shot on gameranger.

3rd person view killed ghost recon... shooting behind objects with a full view of your enemy is not realistic and it ruined the rainbow six franchise for xbox.. now siege took that out but ruined the game further by getting rid of single player campaigns and making the game arcade style. The peak of tom clancy's games was R6 ravenshield .. ghost recon was just a minor disappointment but i still liked it. It's a shame the most realism you are gonna get now is from battlefield 3-4

yep... although they are creative, they lack what made the series feel good cuz of that AAA status they want so much. i do like siege though.

Siege should of never have been called a Tom Clancy game. I love siege but it doesn't even have a single player yet they have something as cool at article 9 which was really cool to play and due to the low visibility it made you take it slow

Hey i love your focus on old games and new mods to those games... Can i advice you to take a really good look at Tomb Raider ORIGINALS and there TRLE community.
I know you mostly cover shooters so maybe this is the wrong channel.. but fans are doing some incredible stuff for such a old Engine as Tomb raider Engine is.
if you wait even longer time community is close to release a fully open engine with dx 11 features and modern graphics capabilites yet back compatible
with all the old games core design games. in either case i love this channel keep it up :)
FYI if anyone is grabbing this game digitally the version on GOG is missing the expansions however you can if you desire buy it on Steam then copy the files over to your GOG installation to play them without requiring Steam.

Has anyone heard of The Sum Of All Fears? Its literally using the Ghost Recon Engine but CQB Rainbow Six Styled. Gaming Pastime should probably check it out.
Game looks great. i played the GBA version and plays like Rainbow Six on gba. i want to try the SWAT 3/ Rainbow 6 style one someday. plus, the book and the movie are amazing
I think the console games which have two squads of three men, are better than three squads of two....Nevermind turns out you can organize them anyway you want.
It's easier to get the PC versions though, and the mods are amazing.
I find the plot of the second expansion to be very interesting, and I wish the third expansion was available on Xbox or PC.
In the Xbox version of Island, fireteams can be told to run and not engage. The CQC problem doesn't happen either.

Hahaha...you'll laugh when I tell you how easy it is:
Simply unzip the downloaded mod (which should result in a single folder named "Heroes Unleashed", with all the mod files inside), simply cut & paste the entire folder into the "mods" folder in your Ghost Recon install location. Then, in-game, in your Options menu, enable the mod, and save.
That's it, all done.
