- Gaming Pastime reviews Wolfenstein for PC.
Developed by Raven Software and published by Activision, Wolfenstein was released for PC, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3 in August, 2009. Wolfenstein is a very underrated title and is easily one of the best games in the series.

This is one of the most criminally underrated games I’ve ever played it was awesome!
+American Patriot agreed.
You're one of the few gaming channels that makes me want to replay these games, great work
Modern WW2 games: we won't show symbols of the 3rd Reich
Wolfenstein: hold my swastika flag
I love the Wolfenstein series and this was one of my favorites, and it’s a direct sequel to RTCW (which is a classic imo)
RtCW and Wolfenstein (2009) are my favourite in the series, even with their flaws: they are the ones with the highest "pulp factor" in the tone and story...something which is rare to see in videogames. As muc has the reboot/sequel The New Order had a very good story and characters who were truly fleshed out, I do believe the two previous titles feel truly like an Indiana Jones/pulp magazine story. Good review, btw!
Wolf 09 is one of the most underrated games I've ever played.
I do not agree with all your reviews, but here I am 100% with you: great game, fun gameplay and a story which is campy yet kind of aware of how bonkers all is.
I really like Return to Castle Wolfenstein, but i still think THIS is the best Wolfenstein game. What a shame that Raven must work on COD DLCs and Remasters now :(
szogyenyi that is a MASSIVE shame
RTCW is one of the best 5 FPS in history.
Let's force Activsion to go bankrupt. So that developer will become independent and do whatever they want.
Agreed raven is really great I am trying to get all of ravens games physically.
I loved this game when it came out, and it's just an overall fun shooter that surpassed my expectations. Very underrated as it's sandwiched between the cult favourite Return to Castle Wolfenstein, and the Juggernaut that is The New Order, this one deserves more love, as it was unique, and a hell of a lot of fun too, to the point where I made sure I did every side mission before taking on the final stage. Great review!
What a great game. I still have the copy in my belt bought from my local shopping centre, before the renovation.
Also, you just earn another sub.
I've kept my copy since I bought it many years ago and I've sold a lot of shit games or games I just wasn't into and WOLFENSTEIN 2009 is nestled in my collection right where it belongs. Enjoyed your review :)
I talked about this game back in 2016, I was waaaay too hard on it. I feel your review does it justice.
Hey man at least you're honest
Really stupid that they removed this from Steam. I remember playing a demo of this on Xbox 360 and felt dumb for not playing the full game. I won't deny that it's considered the "black sheep" of the franchise due to things like the CoD-inspired gameplay, but if it still plays great, that's a win in my book.
This game needs a re-release. I doubt that's gonna happen due to the people at Bethesda and/or Machine Games talking shit about it. They could easily make a few bucks by republishing this game. As I said, it may be the black sheep of the franchise, but it's still Wolfenstein history and deserves a way of being preserved.
I doubt it's gonna be Backwards Compatible on Xbox One anytime soon as well due to being an Activision-published game (so was RtCW, yet that's still around on Steam) and Bethesda/Machine Games probably will leave it to forever rot while only a handful of gamers will show it the love and care it deserves.
+Rose Supreme we've heard a lot if people say it feels like a CoD clone but I never felt that way when playing it. Now when talking about games like the GoldenEye remake and 007 Legends, that's a different story.
I think the main reason it’s out of print is due to Activision publishing the game and one of their developers, Raven, developing it. So there are some rights issues between everyone involved. Quake IV was in a similar situation until the rights for that game were transferred to Bethesda.
That shouldn't stop Bethesda from releasing it. Night Dive Studios were able to re-release long-lost games like the first two Turok and System Shock games. Also, how is Return to Castle Wolfenstein still on Steam if that was published by Activision?
And if that were the case, knowing Bethesda, they wouldn't want anything to do with that game, despite the fact it can make them a quick buck and there is an audience for that game - mainly Wolfenstein fans, sci-fi/fantasy fans and those looking to try games from the last decade.
I think it's one of the best wolfenstein games. My favourite will always be return that game was just soo fucking good. New order is pretty good and I'm just playing wolf 2 now but not finding it not all that special considering how good new order was. Wolf 3d is a great too love them and classic dooms.
My guess is that it's kind of a dark spot in their history. It's a competent console shooter, but a real step back from what RTCW was at it's day and was representative of ID in a sort of creative decline. It was when they were trying to change focus of being a PC games developer to a console one. It ended up totally alienating the original audience of RTCW and ET with it's slow controller designed gameplay and piss poor MP and it was just another alright shooter on consoles and failed to capture that audience. It's a lot better than Rage which I thought was hot garbage. Quake 4 wasn't really outstanding either for it's time but I guess it was less embarrassing, hence why it was re-released. These are kind of an interesting footnote for when consoles had tiny memory walls and it really showed how much they held back design back then. Compare this to the direction they took in the recent Wolfenstein games and it's night and day.
I loved this game. The visuals were super impressive at the time and it felt unique compared to the dozens of vanilla WW2 shooters released during that era. However, by 2009 people were getting tired of WW2. People complained that COD had gone back to WW2 the year before with WaW. But now looking back, i see both of these as some of the best of the era. WaW had Zombies that became its greatest legacy, but Wolf 09 is often unfairly forgotten, probably due to its unavaliability. But, Raven and Activision are both property of Microsoft now, so maybe that will no longer be an issue and it can go back up for sale again.
This game looks a bit dated? What? To me the graphics of this game are awesome, they look incredible without being overly complex.
Really great review. I have it in my 360 backlog and I’m looking forward to playing. I’m a big fan of Raven Software
This one is my favorite installment, I love the Black Sun powers, it would have been cool if you encountered it again in one of the later installments.
Too bad there is now way to buy it on steam anymore
just pirate it, since it's abandomware no one loses money over it
I totally agree with everything you say. I love this game
I know I´m a little late, but you really should give Singularity another shot. I agree that the beginning can feel a bit stale, or uninteresting. But as soon as you get your hands on the TMP (Time Manipulator Device) and upgraded some weapons the fun begins. The shooting is as satisfying as in Wolfenstein 2009, the TMP - abilities are great fun to use. In my opinion Singularity is a very underestimated game; even more than Wolfenstein 2009. I personally like Singularity more than Wolf 2009; the Eisenstadt hub got a bit stale after some time, and the Veil never was as interesting as the Time-related stuff in Singularity.
Sadly nowadays Raven Software is doomed to produce Call of Duty maps and/or Remasters. One of the best First Person Shooter Studios that was there from the beginning; with awesome games like the Heretic/Hexen-Series, Soldier of Fortune 1 and 2, Star Wars: Jedi Knight 2 and 3 etc. But I guess after years after producing Call of Duty-stuff the Studio isn´t the same anymore anyway; especially with the layoffs a few years back.
+Civarello 77 yeah, I'll give it a shot again at some point. And I agree 100% with your second paragraph.
Ah good old Raven software but a shame how it ended up. I enjoyed most of their games particularly the old Jedi Knight games. I assume they removed this game from Steam so people don't get "confused" when searching to buy the newer reboot titles. Too bad, they lost a sale from me.
Honestly don't understand why this game wasn't way more popular (I've also played through it multiple times). My least favourite part is the final boss battle, it truly is the only part of the game that isn't absolutely stellar.
Got this for christmas been playing it on my xp machine been pretty dope so far.
Such an underrated shooter. Great review!
The Germans were defending themselves from communism. They were not cartoon villains
A few seconds into the video and it was an instant subscribe.Hope that you will reach 100 000K soon.Keep up the excellent work.
BTW. My weekend is planned.Binge watch your videos till my eyes start to bleed LOL.
If a movie is ever made about GP, we'll need to put that eyes quote in the ads. Much appreciated.
Gaming Pastime Wow you liked my comment. So cool. Thanks. You have my blessing to put qoute in your (hope to se soon) ad :).
It always pleases me to see a new review from you every Friday. You're in-depth, straight to the point, and your opinions are honest yet interesting. With that said, I know you've covered some Medal of Honor games in the past, but is there a chance you'll cover the original PS1 game and its follow-up, Underground?
+William Lowery my gateway into the series was Underground. Yeah, I'll review them at some point.
There is a mod that changes the enemies speech to pure German, it's very cool for immersion. There is also one that increases the difficulty (above the hardest level) in many aspects including making the enemies hit points significantly higher for a greater challenge, this also makes the leather glad nazi women more formidable like they were in RTCW. Also does some changes to HUD etc. I highly recommend it if you want some more fun on another playthrough. I've played through this game at least 2-3 times now and I plan on playing it again in the future, it's one of the best FPS's I've ever played. Here is a link to the mod www.moddb.com/mods/retrostein
and this is for changing enemies voices to German www.moddb.com/games/wolfenstein/addons/wolf-sp-mod-german-axis-language-mod-v12
Great game, never understood the hate for it.
wait what this gane gets hate why i played the shit out of it back than
Holy sh*t, man, I remember how much I enjoyed playing this game back in early 2010s. Still haven't finished it to this day though. I guess this would be a perfect pick next year for its 10-year anniversary coming up.
And as always - thank you a ton for this detailed, well-thought out and simply brilliant in general game review!
My favorite Wolfenstein game
Same the new one is crap.
I was genuine gobsmacked when I learnt this game was not looked upon well. I honestly found it a very unique and engaging experience, and the way enemy bodies fall apart when shot still has not been done better in any game I've played since.
This is a fine game. Fun gunplay for the most part, but I don’t like the lack of health bar, and the semi open urban area were poorly implemented.
One of my favorites ever!
My cousin Jeff Degenhardt worked on the art design on this game 🤘
Damn! Originally played it on XBOX 360 and missed being able to get it on Steam by at least 3 years! Shoot!!!
5:20 Actually there's no need for that. Collecting all Pieces of Intel will automatically give you ALL Weapon Upgrades for free.
I recently seen the movie Overlord and i loved so much!
I per-ordered this game for the PS3 since I had a potato PC at the time. No regrets! I don't understand why it doesn't get any love :(. I don't think it was the best in the series, but it was still worth multiple playthroughs!
An outstanding profile on this Top 10 favorite of mine, I bought my first 360 Elite the day this came out which also was when MS dropped the Xbox 360 price from $399 to $349. Good to see a fellow gamer who appreciates this gem, I still have the launch strategy guide as well so it was easier to find 100% of needed collectibles to upgrade with. I did a half hour review of this gem too, keep up the great work my friend.
+vinniecorleone62 I got the Elite right before Halo 3 came out. Good times.
The advent of the Falcon chip in 2009 made the Elites bulletproof with no fear of the RROD.
I first played this game on Ps3, and gotta say from that point on i was hooked. I own it for playstation 3 Xbox 360, and am thinking about dropping 80 plus dollars on the PC version. The multiplayer on PS3 was incredible, and i spent countless nights just playing. i brought out the Old ps3 to see if i can find a match, and nothing. I broke out the 360, and nothing. Im gonna buy the Pc version, and hopefully at 2560x1440p this game will be every bit worth it. Great review of one of the best games ever made. BRAVO!
+Rene Pena you enjoyed the multiplayer? That's a first. Glad you enjoyed it. It's a fantastic game.
While I found it originally a disappointing game, it made a very good impression after a recent replay. It has good graphics, satisfying combat and diverse maps. Disadvantages are the confusing town of Isenstadt; the boss fights; the regenerating health and the checkpoints. The game should be brought back to Steam since it outclasses many modern fps.
You can actually mod in the ability to quicksave. It’s on PCGamingWiki.
And it features paladin danse as the main character!
I envy that you got it before they took it off Steam.... still #1 on my steam wish list. Shocking they don't bring it back as it has a rating of Overwhelmingly Positive
That upgrade mechanic was taken from return to Castle Wolfenstein for PS2 the more treasure you collected from secret areas the more you can redeem them for upgrades, the stone tablet see smashed I remember were also in the game as well
Wish I could find this to buy, it's the only one I don't own and didn't have a good enough PC to play it initially and then a while after I did the motherboard blew on it in took a year-and-a-half to find a replacement then steam pulled it ( I wouldn't doubt if it had something to do with the blizzard Activision merger and then using Battlenet or their new service for their games but I think it was a licensing issue to do with the developer not the publisher).
This was a game I'd play on my dad's PC when I was a kid.
That should be enough for you to realise how much of an epic and traumatising experience it was.
Another great review. Big fan of your channel. I really enjoy the games you choose to cover.
I wholeheartedly agree with you, what is wrong with people? I also loved this game. Later I learned of its ~bad~ reputation so I played through it again, you know, to see if I missed something...thought to myself: maybe I just have low standards or something.
Usually I can at least understand why a game is considered bad, or subpar, but if (like me) you don't keep up-to-date with expectations set by external "media" you can be surprised (and disappointed) on you own merits.
Thanks for all the great content.
Love the RPG /adventure elements in this game , now I wish wolfenstein 3 to be a full fledged RPG, we have no WW2 RPGs yet
To me, the only thing missing would be a shotgun of some kind.
Finally, someone who appreciates this gem! I have never understood why it was so negatively regarded!
Return to Castle Wolfenstein was my first FPS game and I love it to this day. And I remember being so hyped about Wolfenstein 2009 and when I finally bought it, it was great. But my PC was very bad at that time, so I had to play on low settings and "playable" framerate. I remember trying multiplayer - honestly, it wasn't that bad, but it was less optimized so I couldn't enjoy it. There were some veil powers, resistance vs nazis and classes - I believe each class had different veil power and weapons, but don't quote me on that.
Anyways - I think this Wolfenstein had the best story overall. Nazis doing occult, BJ being badass. It just had that Wolfenstein feel and I loved it. And I think soundtrack was good too. Mick Gordon does great job with DOOM and new Wolfenstein games, but I think Wolf 09 and RTCW soundtracks by Bill Brown are much more memorable.
I still like new Wolfenstein games, they're all good and much better than most FPS games being released, but they just don't have that feel as RTCW and 2009 had. They're more serious, and while BJ is still badass, they completely changed his character - and while that's a good thing for most people, I just don't like how he's whining all the time, especially in New Colossus.
They're more scifi, no longer in 1940s and there's no occult at all - maybe in Old Blood, but that's nowhere near as good as RTCW (I would prefer official remaster of RTCW over Old Blood any day).
Soundtrack - like I said, is good. But in my opinion too similiar to Dooms, therefore less memorable.
Anyways, I'd like to thank you for doing this video - because there are many gamers that haven't played Wolfenstein 09 and the fact that it's removed from steam isn't helping.
P.S. You're really lucky with that Steam version :D I have "only" physical copy (but that can't be officially bought in my country anymore too)
Why does Commander Keen's grandfather throw the medallion away at the end? Shouldn't he hand it in to the OSS to be looked after by top men? TOP MEN!
Thanks for reviewing this game. I’ll be honest I never gave this game a chance but after watching your review I gave it another chance and I’m loving it so far.
Edit: I finally beat it and enjoyed every minute of it.
This game was my childhood
I played this game, but I don't remember the story. I just remember the gameplay. 11/10 nice weapons customization for the time.
I loved this game I played the campaign six times when I was 10 I truly think it’s underrated
Great review and great channel overall
The last good Wolfenstein game , gunplay is brilliant
Nah, both New Order and Old Blood are amazing. New Colossus is also pretty good. All three of them are better than 2009.
How do you get this on Pc now in 2022 ? This game brings back some memories.
I think you forgot a boss right? Was long time ago that I played this but there was also this lady-boss with spheres or something,, can't remember exactly..
Great sound design and awesome game
Great review! But the Rockerfeller Foundation after WWII, made 138.000 dollars available for changing the history book, concerning Nazi Germany's Paranormal and Occult leanings and search for a variety of Occult Objects, and Paranormal Research. So in some ways the games in the Wolfenstein Series, are more true than people want to belief.
Seriously, where the fucking *HELL* can I find a copy of this???
This game and Singularity = my favs.
Man, B.J. looks like Frank West in this game
I agree,
It’s a very satisfying entry in the series.
But compared to RETURN TO WOLFENSTEIN the story and character development was seriously lacking which is probably where the critical derision stems from.
I think the reason this game was poorly received was timing. It came on the tail end of nearly a decade of Call of Duty and Medal of Honour doing the WW2 setting to death.
And what Wolfenstein had to offer in gameplay and plot /theme was overlooked as the setting was very much "been there, played that, about a million times"
my only 2 issues with this game is the length, it feels like it needed 5-6 levels more, also proven by the fact that you can only fully upgrade everything if you find all intel and tablets. because the gold won't be enough, the other one is more of a personal one, the head bobbing during movement always made me want to vomit during the first 2 hours, until I guess my body/brain adjusted to it
every time you say "veil ability" I hear "availability" lol
I wish remake this game
I really liked this game but the constant backtracking through the hub world was the biggest problem I had with it .
Great review though👍
Red Skull: Soon Hydra will rule the entire World 9:25
I still have my 360 copy of it plus a copy I got from a place I will not name on my rog ally.
I'm in the same boat, I don't understand why people dislike this game but swear by the reboot series which has basically nothing to do with classic Wolfenstein aside from nazis.
EVERYONE HATED ON THIS... i loved it but never finished
Shadow Heart I finished twice, second time with trainer.
Last really good Wolf
Nice review. Any information regarding why it was pulled out from STEAM ?
No clue. My guess is legal reasons. It really is a shame.
Indeed pity. I would reacquire on Steam without an eye blink.
ohh man what i wou;ld do to play this game again and on pc... can not find it anywhere
Normally I wouldn't promote piracy, but if the owners of the game insist on not selling it there's no reason not to pirate it.
Ravens games all kinda seem underrated now
so basically its Wolfenstein and the infinity tablet
I really liked this game, dont know why people bashed it so much.
My guess is this game came out when the trend of everything that wasn't Sprite based or didn't have chunky 3d models was "a call of duty rip off" started and people took one look at the game saw the linear levels and iron sights and decided it was copy catting world at war and ignored it sadly
How do I acquire this game?
I don't know. This game seems to check a lot of the right boxes, but when I played it back in 2009, it felt very... bland, almost like a chore. As if it wore off rather fast.
Maybe it should replay it now and see if my opinion changes.
It is a contradiction, yes! But it all comes down to when I first saw a copy of Wolfenstein at the store. To this day it is in my top ten videogame cover art. I really liked it...
Then I played the game. But the image really stuck with me.
Also I’m so pissed I sold my 360 so now I can’t go back and replay it after watching this
Wait its not on steam? :( Damn I wanted to buy it I used to have the ps3 version
You can easily find it on abandonware
The thing is, it's more Call of Duty than Wolfenstein.
where can I buy this on pc
You can't, but it's easy to find it on abandonware
@@unsuisseegare1291 OK but not GOFWL right? Also, is myabandonware filled with malware? I’ve heard fifty things which is why I haven’t downloaded from there myself.
Great game!
Considering Machine Games "The New" Wolfenstein games are supposed to be a fallow up to this game, it's weird that it's not really available anywhere.
The thing I realy didnt like in this game was the health regenaration, since it was quite rapid one even on higher dificulties, and the fact that nazis speak english - I hate when they do that in WW2 games. Also the gold and intel hunting was kinda tedious.
Both of those problems can be fixed with two mods a found - a rebalance one, which rebalance the game to be slightly more like RTCW, and the second one that makes Germans speak german.
It came out at a time where most people were sick of games set in world war 2 and the regenerating health turned away id soft fans that why it didn't do well.
my brother loves this game but hates the new games
Underrated
My first PS3 game, it was great
wtf mine too, such nostalgia
Best game in the series
This game is awesome.
Heh, Ross Scott (One of my fave creators - he made Freemans Mind) tore this game to shreds, sadly (he DOES make a number of Really valid points, though): ruclips.net/video/P4LaR1C6Xds/видео.html
However, Im with you, and enjoyed all 3 playthroughs of the game. Whether there will be a 4th Im not sure, though...
Wolfshtein
rly this game relice on steam...?

I love this Game xD!
