Return to Castle Wolfenstein is a first-person shooter video game published by Activision, released on November 19, 2001 for Microsoft Windows and subsequently for PlayStation 2, Xbox, Linux and Macintosh. The game serves as both a remake and a reboot to the Wolfenstein series.
Gman: "Snooper rifle."
Me: "Snooper rifle?."
Game: "S N O O P E R R I F L E"
I experienced the exact same sequence of snooper.
Actually made me laugh
😅
I was like, "Wait, did he say--" then, "Oh my god it _does_ say--" 😂
Boop the Snoop, before the Snoop droop into Nazi goop.
*Rockit launcher*
RTCW will always have a place in my heart.
You’ll always have a special place in my heart, Spud.
Hahaha Gman, I'd be honored if you called me a bitch, I'm not sure about "Spud" though.
That and Enemy Territory.
Same.
@@ermacjones4821 its literally in the guys name
Still wishing for a remaster of this game on current gen, hell I'd be happy with an upscaled port that and The Thing game from 2002.
If memory serves me right I think the Xbox version of "Return to Castle Wolfenstein" is playable on Xbox One. Hopefully Microsoft will be able to make most OG Xbox, Xbox 360, and Xbox One games work on Xbox Series X. That's coming from someone who owns an PS4 with there OG Xbox and games in a cardboard box collecting dust bunnies.
*Update* Never mind I just checked Xbox.com and the game isn't on the backwards compatible list.
@RegBeta, I don't fully recommend playing Return to Castle Wolfenstein Xbox on Xbox 360 either. It tends to drop the frame rate a lot of times.
Best to play it on the original Xbox console.
@@RegBeta It very well could be added after Series X launches, iirc they paused development on backwards compatibility to wait for next gen
If it gets added to Xbox One Backward Compat it will probably be locked at 60fps
The thing game was great for its time!
I see what you did there... “Wake up hand job” into “I’m tired”. Just ask, bro.
These console ports look like some bizarre Word War II themed mod for the Turok series :D
@@pistool1 that's the ports in a nutshell
The online version, Wolfenstein Enemy Territory, is still pretty active.
That’s music to my ears, as it was the first online multiplayer game I had truly sunk a lot of time into on PC, shoutout to my nerdy uncle who gifted my family a PC built to play, with the game pre-installed
I played this like a crack fiend. I made it up to the top 900 on xbox.
It's one game I hope gets the XsX upgrade. With active MP.
I can wish.
The Thompson is still op
huge fart it’s as good as the mp40
Played the online version enemy territory literally few days back for nostalgia had a great experience and was very surprised too see so many servers so alive
One thing I loved about _Tides of War_ is that once you beat the game, you could play all six episodes of _Wolfenstein 3D_ from the main menu. I only ever had the shareware of Wolf 3D as a kid, so when I bought _Tides of War_ for my Xbox way back when and discovered that I basically had a whole second game, that was a really nice surprise.
The Xbox version is one of my all-time favourite Original Xbox games especially that you can unlock Wolfenstein 3D after beating the game
Too bad you can't unlock a decent framerate.
ORANGEPANDA Not while playing on 360 at least.
@@_trashPANDA for me the game runs perfectly unless you are doing coop
@@_trashPANDA I second Leo's comment, the framerate is actually really stable on actual Xbox hardware, only stuttering slightly during coop or multiplayer. Combine that stable framerate with widescreen support, new weapons and enemies, levels more accurate to the PC version, intact multiplayer, unlockable Wolfenstein 3D, and the amazing Xbox controller and you can see that the Xbox version is clearly superior to the PS2 version.
@@paldinox1 Was a joke, you guys can calm down now.
RTCW on xbox was the first version of the game I ever played. Back in summer of 2004, my cousin and I rented it from Blockbuster and became addicted to it fast. Eventually we discovered the co op mode which made it even better
Lots of weekends with my friends playing this back in high school. Co-op made for a lot of laughs.
I had a lot of fun playing this with my dad until he was arrested for murder.
@@CarrotConsumer LOL
10:25 that first boss character isn’t Helga it’s Olaric. You see Helga’s dead body on the ground before you fight him.
True, and yet, the game ticks the objective "Eliminate Helga von Bulow" only after you defeated Olaric.
No wonder why she made an appearance in The Old Blood, though she changed her last name.
Played this on PC, spent a LOT of time on Wolf: ET too. Absolutely love it. Bought Operation Resurrection on PS2 and noticed framerate issues and body thud sounds happening before the death animations were done. Never played the Xbox version, thanks for showing all the new enemies. I'm only bummed that you didn't cover Xbox's exclusive co-op mode. That holds my curiosity more than anything. Grateful for every RTCW fan.
Yep. Despite what the video says, the Xbox version is clearly better than the PS2 version, due to the co-op mode and XBL multiplayer, plus the unlockable version of Wolf 3D. The PS2 version is single player only unfortunately.
man that crypt level always spooked me as a kid, but what a fucking game - I haven't played it for so long but I have fond memories of this one (well, the PC one anyway)
also the new intro beep is not as good as the classic gmanlives intro :(
Kick the zombies and 3 shots with the Sten and they fall easily.
For real though, that crypt level had me spooked. Adrenaline.
It still scares me even now
The paratrooper rifle is one of my favorite guns in a game.
I loved it as well.
Has a much higher rate of fire in rl.
Now we just need someone to take the best of all three versions and make a definitive version.
Me: Working on Saturday sucks, I'm tired.
Gmanlives: You remember the time when shooters didn't have container levels and instead featured gameplay?
Me: I'm here!!! Tell me more!!!!
Same here!!🤣🤣🤣
I spent endless hours playing both the sp and mp when this came out. I still play through it about once a year still. This is a great game.
5:10 Snake Have you seen "The Great Escape".
Mgs 3
ehh... must've missed that one.
Do you want a snake shaped gun? 😂
man that intro cinematic still amazes me how good it looks to this day
Stealth kill:
Stab someone in the butt a few times
It ain't RTCW without a few supersonic-fast backstabs, even though every stab after the first is completely unnecessary.
As a kid who only had the Xbox version. Thank you Gman for reviewing this. Pure nostalgia.
I'm a simple man.
When I see a Gman video, I watch.
Same.
Gman: "...about as fun as dragging sandpaper across your peehole..."
::Fortnite commercial begins::
Me: "Accurate."
This was one of my favorite games of all time! I put so much time into this game on PC and consoles but where my time really went to was the PC multiplayer at the time to me nothing could hold a candle to it. I may have to play this game again after seeing your video.
Now if Nightdive can make a remaster of RTCW and include the console-exclusive mission and the extra content from both console ports, and it would be the definitive edition.
It also had one of the best MP's. I miss it
I know it's not the same but you can still play ET with www.etlegacy.com/ on modern machines
This is the truth! There’s still a group that plays today. I haven’t really lately though
I haven't had much luck with finding a proper server and people. Think last time I only found 3 servers that were populated, which were infested with bots which wasn't a fun time. It's such a shame. I played it comp on the old Clanbase for 2ish years. Would give everything to have those times back again
The flamethrowers and the thompsons ttk being better than the mp ttk debacle... good times dude.
Cool stuff man.
I got the 2009 Wolfenstein today loving it so far.
Saw your review on that earlier good shit bro.
Love this game. My first real online addiction on XBOX LIVE. It was amazing experience, as I never had a PC to experience online play before. RTCW will always have a place on my all time favorites.
It sounds a lot like James Horner's Aliens score because it is! Listen to the track "Futile Escape" and the beginning of that musical cue is used in this game's ps2 menu. That's nuts, I wonder if/how they got the rights to that song.
No mention in the Video that the Xbox version as split screen co-op.
It's easily in the top 10 best 2 player FPS co-op experiences on the system.
Yes! I had this game on Xbox as a kid it has always been one of my fav FPS. So glad to see you covering these dude!!!
The last time I was this early, we got a Wolfenstein game people will never accept as a Wolfenstein game.
So wolfenstein the new colossus?
The New Colossus, Youngblood or Wolfenstein 2009?
@@iap7597 nice strawman
@@tomtheconqerur Uhm, nope, I was more thinking about Youngblood. Maybe I should change the word "people" to "I".
@@iap7597 How would it dare to not have?
I played this on PC when I was 12 years old. God, it was awesome, so many fond memories. I remember it was pretty difficult even with the mouse and keyboard.
The PS2 version of the game is the first I’ve played of RTCW, and legitimately the first ever video game I played when I was 4yrs old. Had an absolute blast with that title. Got the PC version of it back in 2019 and I was pretty surprised how different it was. Great video highlighting the differences!
My brother and I had a system. Go to EB games, purchase a game, beat it, exchange it for another game saying it didn't work, beat that game, rinse and repeat. This ended with RTCW, that game was here to stay
Nearly 20 years on, and this is still my favorite FPS game of all time. Not so much for the story, but for the actual game play itself. Also had the best multiplayer as well.
Playing through this now. Forgot how hard it was on PC. Great game experience!
love the xbox version of the game, popped it in not too long ago; forgot about the shotgun too! love those little bonuses that used to go into later ports...
i been watching gmans videos recently for the past 2 days not once he ever asked to subscribe or like the vid. Thats how you get subs i love this guys videos. His videos are informative and its funny with good adult humor which he does not hold back. Keep up the work gman you got a new sub from me . Ps love the humor the waking up with a bj to funny man .
Return will always have a place in my heart. It was the first game I played Xbox Live with. Anyone else remember the demo? Wolfenstein and Rainbow 6 multiplayer demos.
Combining the additions of the xbox and ps2 version on the PC would have created the ultimate RtCW experience.
I also recognise Tony Jay voicing the director ("good lord") who voiced the Elder God in the Legacy Of Kain series
RIP good sir
he was the GOAT for sure man.
Also the extremely sarcastic narrator in the comedic version of Bard's Tale (which you can pick up on most mobile devices and is actually worth playing on them!), hilarious game. He also acted in Twin Peaks, he was the mayor's brother who kept marrying younger women and died by snu-snu.
@@Sacremas yo bards tale is one of the best written games of the aughts.
@@Enclavefakesoldier totally, still highly playable, so goddamn funny, and since it's of age it runs great on mobile devices like tablets, fairly easy control scheme also, and not very difficult game, great for commuting.
Gman, you gotta stop. I was still laughing at your mom joke when you made the cokeception joke.
That coke joke was one of the best things I've ever heard lol
Just one thing i’d like to correct. The first boss battle in RTCW is against Olaric, not Helga. Helga was killed by either Olaric or some trap. You can find her remains near the altar.
OMG THIS IS CHILDHOOD MY FRIEND HAD THIS ON HIS OG XBOX WE PLAYED COOP EVERYTIME FROM THE START BECAUSE WE DIDINT KNOW HOW TO SAVE THE GAME.
Andd we always got stuck at one mission in tombs fighting undead and spoky monsters. We always reached the lastt part where you fight hordes of skeleton and the ground comes to crashing and you fall down to a deep pit. In that dark pit theres a door that leads you outside those caves and into a big castle mansion but for some reason that door never opened up in coop mode. Or in singleplayer mode. We just didint know what to no button worked and so got stuck there forever. Then I played on PC and that door actually opens and you fight a big boss later on.
Back in the days games were ported from PC to consoles. now it's backwards
Stop being a gatekeeper. "Back in the days" yeah that was a long time ago, friend. Games are ported to consoles first now because their graphics settings are set. So it's easier to just put it on console first.
It's always nice to see console shooters, specially when they do interesting work arounds to the limitations of the systems.
I had the PS2 version growing up so I have a lot of fond memories of that version ^~^ Playing that, Quake 3: Revolution, RE4 and DMC3
RTCW was one of the first PC games I bought. Played it back in the day on my Dad's Sharp laptop.
Great video... now it's time for the video on Far Cry Instincts: Predator
When I was a kid, (who grew up on games like RTCW), I'd watch Pierce Brosnan's 007 movies pretending it was live-action RTCW adaptation.
Video I didn't expect today or ever. Console ports of Return to Castle Wolfenstein from Gman.
Tides of war was my childhood. I love that game deeply.
im still waiting for a mod that adds the best parts of both versions to pc
Still have fond memories of the multiplayer. So much fun
honestly, what I remember liking most about the console ports were the new weapon sounds for firing and reloading. Something about them just sounded... better to me.
The Venom's "thunk" on Ps2 comes in mind
Can we get a review of Cursed Halo?
I played the xbox version first years ago when I played this game, and loved the Egyptian levels. I was actually taken back a bit when I found out that these missions weren't part of the core game on PC, it actually seemed really odd to me to start the game straight away at castle Wolfenstein without all the build up from the prologue. I really wish somebody could port these missions over to the pc version. To me, it almost became the 'true' version of the game.
Daniel Bryant yup the Xbox version was the best , I downloaded the pc version a while ago and was like wtf is This version missing a few levels ?
RealRTCW mod is free on Steam
Have you thought on doing a video on the console ports of Half-Life 1?
You are a console port
@@meatmaster665 your face is a console port
@@Trappy-C you got me 😔
@@meatmaster665 ok
Ello you 😺
Tide of War had some framerate dips for sure, but the footage you're showing seems unplayable. I think your disc or Xbox may be a bit screwy.
It's a video conversion problem. Watch it in 720p60 and is fine.
Thats the 360 one its okay but it runs like shit when action gets going
17:36 I always knew you were a man of culture. Jane Seymour appreciation gang.
You didn’t even mention one of the best things in the original Xbox port: co-op campaign. It even changed some of the cutscenes to fit agent one’s coop presence.
The first boss isn't Helga... it's Olaric. Helga was killed - you can see her dismembered corpse in the area she was last at.
I thought that she got turned into the olaric
The way those mummies in the tombs explode into a pile of bones when you kill them is just *chefs kiss*
@GmanLives, You brought a big smile to my face when you said Return To Castle Wolfenstein is better than the New Colossus! Facts 😎
You may have inadvertently solved a mystery for me, a mystery that isn't even mentioned in the video. Having played both versions when they first emerged the PS2 version seemed INSANELY more punishing on higher difficulty settings, to the point that you really couldn't afford to let the nazis get a shot off in any situation it could be avoided (be that by stealth or endless save/load/reload and luck/speed.)
It seems likely that the lack of bullet spread you DO mention was the reason why though, so thanks for setting my mind at ease all these years later 🤣
You figure that someone takes the best parts of each port and fuses them together to the PC version as a revamped version "Deluxe edition"
3:16 that IS Horner's Aliens soundtrack
Unrelated fact : towards the end of that album, there's an amazing, rousing, heroic track that didn't actually find a spot in the film...
...but d i d end up accompanying the scene at the end of Die Hard, when Family Matters puts several slugs through Bon Jovi's hairdresser before he can let loose from his (you let him keep his gun ?!) Steyr.
BJ in the thumbnail looks like David Hasselhoff.
As far as I know, the music in the cinematic from the Xbox version was actually an unused track from Aliens.
Tides of war also introduced CO-OP a friend and I spent all night going through the campaign
Not gonna lie, as someone who's played the original PC campaign a dozen of times I feel like this prologue episode seems to add a charm to the whole game, it's not Opposing Force level of a good separated story point but imo it holds up, not to mention BJ talks before Wolfenstein from 2009, so that's a another plus from me (judge me all you want, I like me some character development that is not just grunts of pain).
Just bought this game two days ago on PC, insert the RealRTCW mod and im having a blast for a old FPS game that cost 5 bucks! Honestly, i perfer this over the later titles we got now, although The New Order and Old Blood were amazing
As slick as they are, I just haven't been able to get on with the modern Wolfenstein games. THIS, however... I couldn't sing it's praises highly enough and I'd absolutely kill for a remake. Always thought the concept would make a great movie too. Gman, your commentary is interesting and frequently hilarious - you have a new subscriber!
It's a good Saturday morning now! NEW GMAN VIDEO!
Clicking on a new Gman video is like getting another present on Christmas morning.
Man this game was awesome, I played so much MP in the PC: etpro, jaymod, etc. Good times.
Swear, I thought this was Minimme's channel for a second
Delete this.
@@Gggmanlives oh, don't be like that. Who doesn't like minimme?
Yeah i loved the PS2 version of the game for the stealth components in Egypt and exploring the tombs. Plus Tony Jay was excellent. I miss him as Megabyte and Chairface Chippendale.
Never thought I’d ever hear .mp3 clips from Tourettes Guy in a Gman video. Great job! 🤣
(Edit): Just watched your first couple of videos. They’re Tourettes Guy soundmods for the common infected in L4D! AWESOME SHIEEET!
The thing you noticed about the PS-port song, YEAH. That's James Horner's "Futile Escape" for both the menu and the trailer. It's the SAME song, just at a part of the song not always easily associated with the movie Aliens because one part occurred when things were relatively calm and the other, well, lots of background noise during the movie.
the music is actually inspired from "Where Eagles Dare"
Learn to listen, DBA. We're talking about ONE TRACK, not the entire soundtrack.
Snooper rifle sounds like something you hear in a parody WW2 movie.
BJ actually sort of speaks in the original game. If he falls off a high enough ledge, (like the dam) he'll scream. I laughed a little too much the first time it happened because he was silent the whole game but then let out this almighty scream that I wasn't expecting.
*R.T.C.W is one of the crown jewels of my gaming collection.*
the wine gave you health in the pc version too, the beers gave you stamina
That stabbing sound of knife will never be forgotten.
I remember playing the PS2 version and I knew it was different when I got it again years later on PC
I am glad i saw this video! I never knew about either of these. Now to look for copies on the internet! Really hoping to find a physical copy of the PS2 release. With PCSX2 i can just pop the disc in my computer and instantly start playing with a keyboard an mouse along with upscaling the game.
Dude I wish you read the news... I could listen to you all day.
wait that upgrade system was only in the PS2 version? It felt like a such an inbuilt thing in the game I assumed every version has it
10:03 best comparison that I’ve ever heard any any video (you even beat Clarkson’s Top Gear quotes).
I'd pick Jane Seymour, but that's just me, I take your point.
YES I MEAN MODERN-DAY JANE SEYMOUR DON'T BE A PRUDE
the way you defeat final boss is to crush him with the stones collapsing on your way out but make sure you turn down the volume
I loved watching my brother play this game when i was younger, im so happy there are console ports to give me nostalgia
I was going to write a comment, making fun of you for calling it a snooper rifle.
And then I realized holy crap. That’s actually what it’s called!! Great video as always!!
Seeing that intro for the first time feels like a fantasy game rather than a WW2 game.
I loved playing this with my brother on co op on xbox .. sadly we hated that we could not save the game in co op. So we had to restart the game every time. We never beat it because of this. The game could allow you to start at a level you beaten in single player but we didnt want to play it with out co op.
funny how these ports have things added or changed while currently, a port is considered good when it runs normally.
I think these framerate drops only occur on 360. I don't remember them on the classic xbox.
common problem with a lot of xbox games being played on the 360
Haven't played it myself but I can speak on behalf of Halo doing that. On old xbox it runs mostly smooth but 360 it gets nearly unplayable with how much slowdown there is, so very likely that OG xbox runs it fine
Got original xbox disk without an original xbox and chanced my arm with my 360- unplayable. Going to buy an Xbox off ebay probably.
Something I loved about the Xbox version is that it had splitscreen, damn I remember playing the whole game with by older bro when we were kids :)
Also this game scared the fuck out of me, back then I didn’t know what it was this franchise was, so the big surprise with the mummies was terrifying
Your use of touretts guy is why i still come back
My favorite world war game.I completed this game a few months back. The plot and screenplay are brilliant. No game has ever given me chills like this one. This one and hitman 3 had the best horror moments.Zombies appearing for the first time and half skeletal robots generating current scares me even now.Blackowitz is the most underrated badass FPS guy.Would love to play a remake of this masterpiece.
