The Doom (stylized as DOOM) franchise is a series of first-person shooter video games developed by id Software, and related novels, comics, board games, and film adaptation. The series focuses on the exploits of an unnamed space marine operating under the auspices of Union Aerospace Corporation (UAC), who fights hordes of demons and the undead in order to survive.
Doom is considered to be one of the pioneering first-person shooter games, introducing to IBM-compatible computers features such as 3D graphics, third-dimension spatiality, networked multiplayer gameplay, and support for player-created modifications with the Doom WAD format. Since the release of Doom in 1993, the series has spawned numerous sequels, expansion packs, and a film.
Since its debut, over 10 million copies of games in the Doom series have been sold.

I agree with most parts of this list, but I’d score Doom 3 much lower. Too much of a horror aspect, takes too long to get to the actual ripping an tearing I know and love from the franchise.
I’ll put it between Doom 64 and Doom 2.

just started playing it on steam, really good game so far
It renewed my love for Doom when my cousin and I got an N64 on christmas to share (i lived with my aunt and uncle). N64 really did soe fun things with FPS in general, like giving us the first co-op Duke Nukem 3D experience, even if they did take away the babes lol
Doom 3 didnt feel like doom... but it was still amazing. It did atmosphere really well and I feel like that forgives the fact that it's a bit slower than all other doom games.
Perfect for me, since I am not a fast-paced gamer. I actually had more fun playing Doom 3 than I did playing the first two. I didn't even complete the second one, because I got so sick of playing it.

For me Doom 2 is the best, but probably due to nostalgia and the memories i had when i was a kid playing it.

I actually didn't really like Doom 3 that much. It was okay, but as much as I love horror games, horror just doesn't fit doom too well IMO.
Well, I respect your opinion and I understand why people didn't like doom 3 (people were expecting it to be an action fueled title in the same level the old ones are) but, as a stand alone game, it's a good game, dare I say, a great game even outstanding. So my opinion is, as of today, may 5th 2019, its 5he the second best doom game after doom 2016. ✌

I have quite the same list except i didnt play Final Doom and Doom 64 yet .I prefer by far Doom 1 than Doom 2 .The map design,atmosphere and music are better in the 1st Doom in my opinion .

MSE Gaming I strongly disagree doom 3 looks bad now. The human character models look chunky and plasticy but other than than the game still looks neat, with that sick stark lighting etc. Has aged better than many games from the era.

Now that Doom 64 has officially been released on PC I think it should rank higher on the list. Despite playing it for the first time in 2020 I enjoyed it more than Doom II which I grew up playing. It might be the novelty effect too. Time will tell.
Doom 64 is by far my fave first person shooter ever. I've still only ever played it on N64 with original controller.
I need to find a mod that makes more sprites for weapon animations. Thats the only downside of that game, the slight movment of a single sprite replacing multiple shots displaying different angles and lighting of a weapon, like the shotgun esecially
Doom 3 started my doom interest. I always thought that game made me feel like a bad ass lol especially after I killed two hell knights with the shot gun. Then again I played that game so much to the point where it was all a run and gun experience for me, I completely forgot that it was supposed to be a “horror” game haha.
"Its too dark to see unless you use the flashlight" isn't that the whole point of a flashlight ie its dark.
That's why I've been using mods for Doom 3. I mean wtf is having no flashlight attached to your weapon in a future?
It's a neat idea but there are folks like me who get painful eye strain playing very dark games and it makes Doom 3 unplayable. Good for those who can play it but I couldn't.
It's for gameplay purposes. The fact that you have to switch to a flashlight gives the player a tradeoff. Do I risk putting my gun away to improve vision? If the flashlight is attached to the gun, that removes that element of risk, of decision-making on the part of the player. There'd be no reason not to have the flashlight on at all times, which defeats the purpose of making it dark in the first place. Moreover, the BFG edition makes maps brighter, which only further reduces the horror. The darkness is key to Doom 3's aesthetic and mood, and having the maps be brighter or the flashlight on at all times just detracts from the experience, both aesthetically and in terms of gameplay.

They could've implemented a battery for the attached flashlight that gets drained and needs time to recharche to balance it out (similarly to the way it was done in Halo).
It could have maintained the tension but not make it as frustrating as having to give up your weapon to be able to see in the dark in a shooter (rather than a pure horror type game).
@@dennisdavidov782 Battery is a worse system because it can create breaks in the players progress as they are having to wait for their flashlight to recharge before they can continue moving forward.
How annoying was it playing The Library level in Halo and constantly having to wait for your torch to recharge before you could keep moving. This was so bad that in the anniversary edition they effectively floodlit the level so you didn't even need the flashlight at all.

Doom 3 is great, it put the series in a different direction for one entry and completely nailed it.
I love Heretic and Hexen. They definitely still get more recognition than Strife and Chex Quest, but it makes me sad how often these two seem to completely fly under the radar in discussion of Doom games and WADs.

Doom 3 had more effort put in than doom 2. And I agree with people that it was more like a map pack or xpack than a full blown sequel.

The only reason 64 is higher than the original two games is because of nostalgia. I had an N64, and that was actually the game that got me into the Doom series as a whole. To that, I'm eternally grateful.
I agree with this list almost 100%. Only thing I'd change is doom 64 over original doom and under doom 2. I love 64 tbh it's fun and I kinda like the dark atmosphere. But doom 2 is the best of the classics imo

The sound design of Doom 3 was awesome. There was a point where you hear a voice calling you down a corridor, and then you get to a blocked door, and the whispering voice goes full volume and says something like: 'They took my baby!!!' I was playing it with stereo sound and all the lights switched off and it creeped me out...
It's one of the best moments in the game. And you hear the baby crying and it turns into distant laughter... brilliant just brilliant
true it was one of the scariest games, i dont really get scared from zombies and such but the sounds sounded so real that i was worried if i take off my headphones id keep hearing them

I finally got Doom 64 for Switch. I am so glad that's the version I got. If you could actually beat the OG version on the N64 without abusing the save anytime feature like I did, my hat is off. I mean, that game's difficulty can go from 0 to Battletoads without warning. I've also heard the original version of Doom 64 is dark af
i played doom 3 on the original xbox when i was 5. back when the game was darker, the flashlight wasn't mounted. i remember it being so scary for me. i remember not having the courage or will to get through certain parts of the game (ESPECIALLY HELL AND THE CAVERNS). when i beat it i didn't play it again until i was an adult. it feels nice playing it now that i'm not shitting my pants through the whole level
I recently bought Doom 3 for the Switch since it was on sale, and damn is it good. Loving it so far, and truly spoopy

I love how you ranked 3 highly. For some reason it became popular to trash that game, but it’s easily the most unique in the series and damn it was scary. I still remember the intro song as being my favorite in the series, and of course the graphics were absolutely stunning back in the day.
Blaine Sandoval it’s soulless because it was a twitch shooter and the horror aspect was added poorly, like it relied on jumpscares and low lightning, which is a big no-no if you want to become respected by critics

the original doom and doom 2 are timeless masterpieces. can still throw on either one today and enjoy them immensely. The punch from the shotgun, the chainsaw, punching aliens to bits with berzerk punch ,the sound effects and music, the wonderful level design.

I had forgotten just how good the storyline was on Doom 3. That was a true horror game, and the graphics and environment were stunning when it came out. I played it all the way through on Xbox and that game just plain kicked ass. Loved every second of it.
But still, like you, I played the original Doom on my POS computer all the time. For me, at the time, nothing could ever beat it.
Pretty much how I'd rank them. No qualms whatsoever. Although, I'd say in terms of the visual representation of Hell, Doom 3 was the best. The last section of that game is an audio/visual masterpiece.
Better than System Shock 2's "organic" section? I highly doubt it xDDDD And it came first too, in 99.

It's a tough call between the original Doom, Doom 2016, and Doom Eternal. One's the original, one's raw as fuck, one fleshes out the lore with awesome gameplay.

Doom 3 is da best. It really felt like fighting real demons from hell, unlike eternal where demons are cute looking creatures who turn into rainbows.

Doom 3 and it's expansion is still my favorite Doom stuff. Doom 1-2 - classics, but I love gritty sci-fi horror aesthetic of D3.
Even though Doom 3 and Resurrection of Evil were nowhere NEAR my faves, I REALLY LOVED the Betruger/Maledict Boss Battle at the end of Resurrection of Evil. It was honestly one of my favorite bosses of the entire series.
But the ending of that game was one of the worst and laziest I've ever seen. It's literally black screen with the voice saying "Marine, welcome home!" and then theme song starts playing. I don't expect the Lord of the Rings ending, but c'mon...
@@Buraz93 Arguable... Better than the wasted non-ending telling you that your ending was in another expansion pack that 3 ended with. That ending STILL pisses me off. Even worse was at how long i had to wait to play ROE. Also I kinda liked the implied symbolism of ROE abrupt ending... Dying in the literal heart of hell only to be welcomed into the arms of heaven. At least that's how I interpreted it.

i’m playing Doom 64 right now and really like it. I think the level design is great.
I liked how 3 was leaning on the horror based side of things with the lighting and audio making it more tension filled but I was pretty befuddled as to why the super shotgun was omitted🤔 By that time they knew that the SS was one of the main staples of doom.. I would love to see D3 remade or reimagined on a new engine.

Thank you for not putting Doom 3 as the worst, I know so many people consider that one terrible because of how different it is to the older games, but on it's own it's decent enough really, the atmosphere is pretty good.

Yeah I remember when my PC S T R U G G L E D to run Doom 3 at 30fps in best case scenarios. Nearly 20 years later I enjoy it at 144 fps. How time flies.
