I think that in general, UT3 is a great game. It only falls short when you compare it to UT2004 and UT99. Which is of course impossible to avoid. Those games are way too close to perfection. And the devs certainly made more than a few bad decisions while making UT3. Anyway, I really like that you include the most popular/best mods into reviews. I don't know if anyone else does that on RUclips. Hope you keep this trend.
This is something that I always said: UT3 it's only "lacking" if you compare it to UT2004, which had an unnatural amount of content even for its time. But since most people where used to that since it was the predecessor, the comparision was unavoidable.
I might be one of the very few people who actually enjoyed this game since its initial release EVEN with all of its flaws compared to the previous entries. Personally, I think they really did some things right in this version: the weapons felt more brutal and sometimes more useful than ever, the entire arsenal has the best balance of the series, the player movement might be the best one as well (at least IMO; i liked the "floaty" gameplay of UT2k4, but I liked this "grounded" one way more). Plus, the vehicles: the Necris vehicles alone are a good excuse to play this game. I kinda felt the darker tone a bit weird upon release (as someone who was used to the more colorful style of the previous games), but I ended up enjoying it the more I played, as I saw it as an interesting contrast with the rest of the series. Didn't mind about the "Gears of War visuals" because, actually, this style is older than Gears itself: Quake characters, from 1 to 3, all had this same style back then. But yes, the game had its flaws. It felt a bit unfinished upon release and it would only feel "complete" after the Titan Pack almost 2 years after its launch. I think that, if they released the game as it was after the patch 2.0 and the Titan expansion back then, it would be far better received. Sorry for the long rant, but it's just a point of view of someone who played (and still occasionally plays) UT3 for more than 6 years straight. Nice review as always, BTW!
Ballistic Weapons was such an incredibly depthy mod including new map sets and crazy fun weapons. The mod-specific modes were so hard to top, but I'm glad to see that the team gave UT3 some love. Glad to see that the game still allowed for easy modding implementations. Also, Chris Perna, the character designer for Gears of War, his face kind of explains the artstyles in this and GOW. XD
You should play the original Unreal. I love its atmosphere, it's like a mix of Quake and Halo. There are mods to enable HD textures and 3D sound on modern systems.
Honestly, I've always felt like this game killed the series - even back in 07' when I was still in middle school. As someone who religiously played 04' & 99' back in the day, I remember picking up UT3 when it came out & dropping it after a few hours whereas I invested hundreds upon hundreds of hours on the former two. Some might disagree, but that's just me really.
I fully agree with you. UT99 & 2004 are amazing and UT3 doesn't hold a candle to it. I think the graphics in UT3 are particularly terrible. From the overly bulky character designs to the really busy look of every map. The drab colors that makes targets hard to spot at times. Even with all the tinkering with the color options the game offers and Reshade. I can never find a setting with which I am fully comfortable. Then there's the unnecessary story that adds absolutely nothing to the experience. It just looked like a bunch of time wasted on an element of the game, when the devs should've been busy putting back assault and other game options. Over the years I've reinstalled the game a total of 6 times and I uninstall it in the next couple of hours because I grow bored. And all I can think of when playing UT3 is just how much more fun I have playing '99 or 2004. Such a waste.
Agreed with this video 100%. If you missed it and want a UT experience start with UT99, then UT2k4. However, one thing of praise in UT3 is the weapon balance when compared to the previous installments.
Oh, also, another thing that I had in mind since UT3 had launched: To me, it seems Epic was trying to reach a new playerbase with this game, which explains almost all of its controversial decisions (focus on the PS3 version, dark and gritty visuals akin to Gears of War, the inclusion of a story-themed single player mode, removal of previous gameplay modes due to console hardware limitations, emphasis on the vehicular combat to rival Halo, etc). However, at the same time, looks like they tried to "go back to the roots" of UT with the all electronic soundtrack and some classic map remakes from the original title, for example. We all know how it turned out in the end, anyway.
BTW, we still have a group of loyal players who enjoy fighting each other Matches Fridays and Saturdays starting at 9PM Pacific Time. Come join us and have some fun. We play, we fight, we complain, we call one another names :) I think some of us even cry after losing a match, and of course, blame the team mates for losing. I know I do (not the crying part) So, don't get scared or offended if a player complains about your skills. It is just they get angry easily and threat to kick out whoever isn't at their skill level. But soon enough they change their mood, because they realize it is better to play with real people instead of playing with bots.
I've experience bot problems like you describe, but only playing customs maps and mods. I believe it's due to two reasons: 1) Some custom maps have horrible/incomplete bot paths. 2) FoxMod "improved bot AI" actually wrecks bot AI on some custom maps. Long story short, UT3's bot AI is every bit as good as previous UTs in OFFICIAL maps (and in some excellent creator's custom maps). It's not the fault of the game and/or Epic that some custom maps and mods are bugged.
Some information in this video is wrong. Black edition does not contain All official patches. Complaining about Bots on the easiest difficulty setting/ then you show footage of broken GOW ported content to maps - redundant. The AI is actually very good, the footage you showed is a custom map built badly with no bot support/ incorrect bot pathing and 0 collision consideration. Play the final stock map on hardest setting, pretty sure the AI is gonna screw u. Decent video though. PS3 has 256MB ram, making UT3 run on that is impressive.
They also flat out said they would rather have Unreal Tournament not be on consoles, which is a dumb thing to say in my opinion. Why prevent console players from playing the greatest first person shooter series of all-time?
@@AlphaZeroX96 When and where did they say that? xbox was only internally hated becuas eit was a backdoor into xbox and microsoft systems.. Still is probably lol. PS3 was only disliked due to the additional licensing issues, lack of intensive physx, which died anyway coz cryengine took over and the contreoller thingy- which if you plugged a keyboarg with a magic condey thing - again - back door access... There was also the mod support issue where you could easily destroy a PS3 or again- use it to overflow and gain access... Never read a quote from anyone that states they didn;t want console. They have been in bed with Sony since day 1
OH.. unless it was GOW / UT dispute- that's possible ccoz UT3 being Sony and GOW being Microsoft and bothbeing completely differnt games (1 online FPS - 1 co-op story game).. That would make sense a lil

Thinking Dodge mechanic does more harm than good is a negative point to you as a reviewer of an Unreal game. The mechanic is crucial for moving fast, map control and fighting. Is all around in the competitive scene of UT games and one of the mechanics new players need to learn in order to get good for real.
I don't think it's a negative point. I was playing this for fun and took no part in the competitive scene. I don't doubt it has significant value there. However, I would have it bound to something other than the movement keys which is what I think does more harm than good.
UT2003 is basically the same as Unreal Championship an XBox game, UT2004 was designed as PC exclusive which is why it is considered superior to UT2003. UT3 is basically the next version of UT2003 as it is a port of a Console game, it is a shame that there is no UT2004 equivalent of UT3.

unreal tournament 3. has a bad aesthetic. But do not mix it up in bad game. And for the years it has ue3 base. It is powerful. But badly taken advantage of. They set aside ut3. to forge udk and sell the engine.
It did more harm than good for me personally. I always ended up double tapping the strafe keys when I didn't mean to causing me to dodge off ledges among other things. So I disabled it. It's probably a more useful mechanic when playing against actual people. I played against bots.
I've been playing UT2004 since I was 8 (still playing it). Unreal Tournament 3 was just boring. I hated our main characters and a game about Tournament fighters not fighting in a tournament is the exact opposite of what I paid for. Still, the game was fun for a console experience. No computer of my own, so I played this while my parents used my Unrealbox. They kept calling it a computer but lets be real. Tripod vehicle and PS3 mod support were highlights. KB+M could even be used on console. Not an awful game, just severely lacking in the traditional gameplay in favour of better visuals. Character designs are also shit in this game. Huge turn off. The guys that looked generic as all hell in 2004 look pretty good by today's character design standards. Lack of colour and overall loss of ironic tone really killed the experience. This is war, I shouldn't be hearing a sexy announcer voice shout, "double kill!" when I rob sons away from their mothers. Fix the tone, drop the Gears of War obsession, and please have a viable rocket launcher in one of these games for once pls Oh wait, Unreal died as a franchise after some really shitty updates hit the UT4 project.
