      From what I remember though the early Warfare prototypes were more in the style of UT2004 when it came to characters. Same can be said when the original focus of UT3 was basically just a sequel called "Unreal Tournament 2007", with a mix style of UT2004 and early Warfare/Gears of War, before being rebooted into final product having the final Gears 1 artstyle.
      But yeah basically Warfare (later Unreal Warfare) at first was meant to be a spinoff of the Onslaught-type of gameplay, but with a class system and some modes like TDM and CTF.
      As for the difficulties do know in Gears 1 it's still Easy, Normal and Hard in the code base, so my assumption is that the campaign difficulties are the same but some reason use Gears 1's text.

    • @element1111
      @element1111 7 лет назад +6

      Not really. Sure, they look alike, but the new character is still drawn from scratch so there's plenty of effort that's been put into the models. Maybe they wanted to use the GoW success in order to give UT3 a bit of a boost by loosely "tying" it in visually

      Stormer248 yuck no way! With few exceptions, a lot of that era’s desaturated games have aged poorly, and look very dull to boot. UT3 looks dreadful compared to the original and UT2k4. Modern games’ embrace of a full color palette makes them look that much more realistic and aesthetically pleasing if you ask me. Some games look great with a minimal usage of color (Dark Souls) but it really depends on the game and what kind of atmosphere they’re trying to achieve.

      @@matternicuss Even when modern games (2015-2020) have darker colours, they'll still use the colours to add to the realism of the clothes for example will deploy subtle bits of green because the brown jacket would have strand of green because that's how old tymes clothing was enhanced when coloured dyes were in short supply but people would have a greater appreciation for such minor details before industrial media.

    The funniest/saddest thing about UT3 is how Epic deliberately delayed the game just to add that single player story mode nobody asked for. And this delay caused the game to be released within the same time window as Modern Warfare, Crysis and The Orange Box. It's little wonder the game made such a small splash and was quickly forgotten. Epic did themselves no favors at all with a move like that.
    Putting "From the makers of Gears of War!" on the box art also made me groan.

    I actually really appreciate the amount of work that was put into this game. Considering the game came out in 2007, the graphics and details were amazing. UT2003 was only four years off yet UT3 looked like it came from another decade. Even today graphics haven't improved much from UE3. Now, the pitfall is that it was hard to make out the players from the environment due to too much detail. UT99/2004 both had very simple graphics so it was easy to tell where projectiles and whatnot actually were. In UT3, the extra animations were detrimental.

    • @warlordsquerk5338
      @warlordsquerk5338 3 года назад +4

      I'm surprised people had difficulty due to the detail. I can think of maybe one map like that but mostly I was fine. It's sad we probably won't see another UT at least not for ages. UT3 was so awesome. Warfare was fantastic, Vehicle CTF was great and the general deathmatch/ctf was really good. A pity UT4 had unnecessary new movement mechanics but still could have been so awesome but they just abandoned it.

  • @BenYork-UBY
    @BenYork-UBY 4 года назад +16

    The reason why UT3 shipped with so little compared to the last games is because Epic had a "less is more" approach this time around. They wanted to take only the things that were successful (the original weapons and gamemodes + UT2004's Onslaught mode and VCTF) and try to refine it as much as possible. They really wanted to go for quality, so ironically what seems sloppy might be more due to overengineering than a lack thereof. Everything about UT3 is a reaction to the criticism of UT2004 and an attempt to fix it. EG:
    - "UT04 players are spread out too thin between too many gamemodes" = truncate the less played modes and merge bombing run with onslaught to make warfare
    - "UT04 is too colorful and cartoony, UT99 was dark and gritty" = we get the gears of tournament grey and brown art-style
    - "Bring back the Stinger!" = Stinger replaces minigun. People also wanted the ripper but for some reason the devs refused to add that one
    - "Lightning gun is ghey/Shield gun is ghey/Assault rifle is ghey" = Sniper rifle, impact hammer and Enforcer all return
    - "I hate the arcadey shield and health icons!" = Shield is changed back to armor and we get the UT99 Armor indicator back
    - "Wheres my Necris?" = An entire plotline, new characters, new maps and new vehicles added entirely around the Necris
    - "The Scorpion is useless!" = That particular vehicle gets a complete rework
    - "WEAPON BALANCE REE" = The weapon balance more closely mimics UT99 now, except without the ripper or a 6-barrel rocket launcher because that would be OvErPoWeReD
    Though I don't understand why they dropped the tournament plotline for something more Gears-ish. That can probably be chalked up to Epic forgetting what game they were making. In any case, they really tried to appease the original UT99 players and make "UT99 with better graphics" moreso than a new game. This pleased some of the original fans, and gave us an FPS DM game with pretty solid weapon balance and controls (having played both UT3 and UT2004 I do think the weapon balance and gameplay of UT3 works better), but at the end of the day having a remaster of UT99 was only entertaining for so long and while I enjoyed UT2004 and UT99 for years, I was finished with UT3 after a month. It's kinda sad. I think UT3 deserved better
    I also disagree about UT3 being the weakest in the series. That award goes to UT2003. The fact that you forget about UT2003 is proof of that.

      I remember those days and you pretty much explained it all. On a side note, I remember Epic discovered that many players at the time played solo (Instant Action) instead of online, that's why they made a single player mode more akin to something like Gears of War story-wise (which was extremely popular back then, they at least tried to attract that crowd, I think, since it was also a game aimed at consoles).

    I think weapons are a lot better implemented in UT3 than in the previous games and a lot more balanced. Biorifle and plasmagun are a lot more useful in this than in previous iterations. I do miss the ripper though. Singleplayer campaign, while true that it would have been a lot better with traditional tournament setting as in previous games, does have one added plus over others and that is the cooperative mode.

    Overall a good review, but I'm not sure how you count the weapons. The original UT has 11 weapons (plus a Translocator), which coincidentally is the exact same number as the weapons in UT3. The only weapon that is missing is the Ripper, but it's not in any of the sequels. The AVRiL might be only for vehicle modes, but so are all the extra weapons in UT2004. The first review I feel you've really missed the mark.
    This had absolutely PHENOMENAL one-on-one play, an incredibly difficult balance to get right and this is up there with Quake Live. Some of the environmental features on the maps such as sandstorms were an awesome idea, and the vehicular combat is just amazing fun. I mean piloting War Of The Worlds walkers? And the glue cube power up that slowed down time inside? Perhaps it's more nostalgia but this was a highly polished, brilliantly balanced game that will always hold a place in my heart.

    I think that UT3 was a reboot of some kind. New game in the series, new engine, so they maybe wanted to start fresh. I was blown away with those graphics back then and my PC couldn't handle it.

    I understood the hate for UT3 back then since many people didn't have machines that could run it. But this hatred is uncalled for. Most of these complaints would fall on a TRUE UT Fan's deaf ears.

    Spent hundreds of hours on 2004 and UT3. Not the same games at all indeed. But i love both of them. 2004 was more a "mot the hell out of this" type of games, a bit like CS, with stupid maps taking place in giant kitchens, instagib mods where body flew in the air catching fire ... What a time it was.
    UT3 is more like a modern game with tons of polished maps available and a more serious and badass feel.
    And this hoverboard is a gift from god on big maps like Torlan

    Love your reviews mate. But I would like to iterate on the bots issue. While they are stupid and will take all the best stuff, you can actually tell them what to do in this game. There is a menu or key commands to tell the bots on your team to "DEFEND" "ATTACK" "COVER ME" and so fourth, and they will do it.
    Hope that helps.

    i had a buddy who had an Xbox 360 and had this. it was good fun to play together on the console, it seemed to handle pretty well there. I'm guessing the split focus on pc + console may have had something to do with the final quality of the game compared to UT2k4 which was PC only if memory serves.

      Years later that's what I ended up thinking. It was nowhere near as bad as many people claimed (and still claim), it was just released at a very wrong time. If we compare UT3 to almost every other shooter that we can find in the market today, for example, it becomes pretty clear IMO.

      In gameplay therms UT3 was, in fact, the best of the series. Perfect weapon and vehicle balance, in every aspect.
      The new UT has a good gameplay, but the weapon balance has changed for worse. The only redeeming qualities in its actual state are the oldschool-like maps and PART of the player movement, IMO.

    I don’t care what anyone says UT3 was awesome fun & awesome looking! But I was damn good at the game so maybe I am biased. Only thing that really ticked me off is that they got rid of my precious Anubans. And no double jump. But other than that I thought it was great. Not quite as good as UT2004 but pretty close. Also the hover board is awesome. You just have to know how to make good use of it. And the maps are friggin gorgeous for the most part. Especially maps from the modding community.

    Well UT3 selling the Unreal 3 engine isn't entirely true. Gears of War came out a year before its release along with a few other titles such as Rainbow Six Vegas that were on the Unreal 3 engine and that's what really kicked it off. So much in fact that the boxart for UT3 on the consoles had the logo "From the creators of Gears Of War" which demonstrates just how popular GoW was to where it unfortunately dwarfed the Unreal franchise in popularity, well for the console twats at the very least.

    • @CaptainVKanth
      @CaptainVKanth 6 лет назад +3

      True. And let's not forget how Tim Sweeny, the lead engine designer, would trumpet how consoles would be the future, pissing off alot of pc gamers. All because of lot computers were running on low end intel on board video cards and they didn't want optimize their code on these devices.
      Fast forward to 2018, Unreal Engine 4 is running on low powered smart phones.

    Onslaught was a gimmicky tangent that didn't add vehicles to the finely tuned dance of death so much as it completely replaced traditional UT gameplay with vehicle gameplay. Warfare is very slightly better because it has more level segments where vehicles are impractical so the normal infantry gameplay can shine a little more (also vehicles feel better than in Onslaught thanks to smoother physics) but it's still a gimmicky tangent, imo.
    Deathmatch, CTF, etc. however work great in UT3. Weapon balance is tight and the game feels great to play, imo. Personally, I like it better than the original, though not quite as much as UT2004.

  • @ArthaxtaDaVince777

    UT3 was an amazing game, people didn't appreciate it enough, instead were playing other games that were not nearly as good, because most "gamers" are casuals and would rather play 5-10 minutes of brainless COD or Gears, than put tine into playing an Arena shooter which was much more demanding. UT became the most evolved game in Arena shooters, having not only the classic death match modes and CTF, but adding vehicles and becoming something more. I mean its the same today, people showed no interest in UT4, instead Fornite blew up and Pubg, two games you play twice and already know the whole game, Epic realized nobody cared about arena shooters anymore and for this reason UT4 was cancelled. I really dont understand the complaint against vehicles in UT04 and UT3, they were in separate modes from classic, how is that a con? Anyways, to me, it wasn't Epic that gave up on the genre and the franchise, it was "gamers." Same shit heads today playing boring crap like Destiny or Overwatch, I guess the only true gaming community left is Halo and single player. I'll be waiting for Halo 5 and Ghost of Tsushima.

    • @rodrigof.r.desouza3587
      @rodrigof.r.desouza3587 4 года назад +2

      Kinda fully agree with you. I mean, people still trash talk on UT3 for a lot of stupid reasons, and while I'm not defending Epic (since they later basically admitted that they could - and should - have made way more with this game) I kinda understand their point. I mean, why invest in a new Unreal game if at each new installment people prefer to bitch about it than play it? And since they left the channel open for the "community" for suggestions on UT4, they couldn't satisfy everyone and obviously they abandoned the project.
