    From ~ 8' to ~ 9'30" the boys are talking about the difference between Alnico 2s, Alnico 3s, and Alnico 5s; they assume that the "hotness" of the pickups steps-up with each number. If I'm not mistaken, actually Alnico 2s are "hotter" than Alnico 3s. In other words, Alnico 3's magnets are the weakest of the three.

  • @kilgoretrout3966

    It is coil splitting, as in splitting the 2 coils of the 'bucker into a single coil. Coil tapping, on the other hand, is actually tapping the same coil at two points of the winding. -Normal setting is the full wound, normal pup sound.
    The tap setting takes its tone from wires tapped in at another point with less windings, so a lower output- to get a different color and heat of output from the same pickup. This does not split the coils, unless wired to do so...if that makes sense. It isn't really even a peeve of mine, but i think it would be good for consumers, if there were consistent nomenclature across the board.

    • @CatharticGuitar
      @CatharticGuitar 3 месяца назад +1

      It’s only gotten worse with even experts and big name stores referring to splitting as tapping. And saying things like “coil tapping to get that single coil sound.”

      Tony Wilson I have a 2019 SG Standard. Sounds absolutely fantastic. It’s the pots that matter, not whether they are connected by wire or by circuit board-the electrons don’t care. That said, if I wanted to change out any (I had considered replacing the tone knobs with push-pull coil-splits), you have to yank out the whole thing and wire in all-new stuff. Doesn’t add that much to parts cost, but adds to the labor/pain-in-the-ass.

The ultimate guitar or most preferred one would be a cherry sunburst standard with grover machine heads. I’m going to London in two weeks. Panic42000 I have a 2019 Traditional and I have looked at everything about the 50’s Standard and the 2019 Traditional. The differences are basically the pots. Just about everything is the same. Someone in this discussion mentioned that and I agree. There are slight differences. The neck profile may be slightly different. Someone mentioned frets. The 2019 Traditional has low frets. I think the 50’s Standard lists something else. The electronics on both are hand wired. Neither is weight relieved. The 50’s Standard’s supposedly have less flame in the maple similar to the Traditional. The main thing Gibson has done is rebranding and improving quality control. My 2019 Traditional is perfect. I think that some of the quality control changes took place before this new line came out. I’m not disagreeing with anyone else’s statements here, I’m just stating what I think. They really should have compared the Traditional to the 50’s Standard but that would not sell guitars in the new like. Even the pickups and tuners are the same. The 60’s has more changes like Alnico V pickups.

    • @libertylizard_
      @libertylizard_ 5 лет назад

      Honestly the tuning issue is becoming a bit meme worthy now. The LP will drop out of tune, primarily when a whole host of things aren't quite right. Might be the nut, might be a good manner of things. The closer the QC reaches the PLEK standard, the less you are going to suffer. Hence the first thing JC did, was hit the QC department hard and do very little else. Things are swiftly improving and the employees are happy, more than they have been in years. And thats important. I haven't had any issues with the new gen release stability wise. Sure the older style design isn't quite as tolerant of bending into the next dimension - but few guitars are. The headstock routing again, gets people chirping away. Yet I haven't found it all that much worse than my dozens of other guitars.
      If you can play before you buy, get a dealer that inspects and sets-up properly. Even the mighty PRS needs that sometimes if the guitar has to travel some to reach you and the core models are a whole grand+ more expensive than these new guitars. Gibson are starting to get things right. So I'm supporting that. If it makes you more comfortable to give it a year, JC will do great things for quality control. Those are the words of the floor staff, not me. Your choice but I think you'll be surprised, when compared to the internet and its 'Gibson is out of tune after one song' nonsense.

      @@libertylizard_ I've seen it - there's an improvement, but I thought they were Pleked by Gibson so that was strange. However it was very small adjustments needed so I guess that could be considered normal for a normal production guitar, ie not custom shop.

    • @libertylizard_
      @libertylizard_ 5 лет назад +1

      The general feedback was that the quality was fine, short of adjustments that they are weary to do as it takes away from the material - so might not suit everyone. Sounds like a copout but depending on your setup preference you can't put back whats been filed away.
      There's still a ways to go on QC sure enough but they already have better facilities, inspection and most importantly of all, Gibson staff are smiling again. Thats the real 'good sign', a happy team - builds great guitars. Next run should be even better yet. CS will have to step up their game too then lol.

    I miss my Les Paul. Sold it for a song way back when I was broke, now I have plenty of cash but already have my main axe and don’t need any more guitars. Would love to just hold it one more time...

      Can relate. Never hurts to have more Guitars. The sense in life, is in the memories and the sentiment; not in the practicality - ofcourse, not to the point of recklessness. Just to the level of making sure that joy isn't burdened with regret. It took me a long time to realize just how magical the sound of a well built and maintained LP really is.

      I had a 17 traditional. And I will say this....... these 2020 lines blow the quality control out of the water.. awesome guitars. You buy a new one and you won’t regret it. You’ll wanna be buried with it

    Who remembers K-On?

    • @libertylizard_

      Ah there is always at least one of these comments when I pass by. I'm glad people remember it, as the school isn't far down the road from here.
      So if its of interest; Often, there is a dojinshi convention here, which is I suppose the western equivalent of a manga/anime showing. Recently outside the school, I'm not sure if you will remember the show well or not but if you do; there was a statue, that is outside the main building of Furukawa Tetsujiro. The class would occasionally dress it up with hats and a scarf. Just the other day one of the senior staff, brought out the 50's Standard and played Cagayake for us all next to that same figure and it gathered quite a crowd. It happens now and then, after all the whole place as been renovated to commemorate the great success of K-ON all those years ago. But that sound, so iconic. To some of us, Gibson means a whole lot because of the broad impact its had in our lives in so many ways. And it means a lot to think that they might return to the quality they once had. Best of luck to them and to those that hear something special when they listen to that same sound.

    Just to say weve had a few of these on the bench already the tops are badly matched ! These feel and look cheap the type of guitar I expect big catalogue shops to sell. Customers deserve better than badly cut nuts, poor tops, dried out cheap feeling Rosewood boards....
    Buy a pre owned Gibson 1990 to 2004 now that's buying authentic not this cheap crap. Branding at its worst....
