  • For 2019 Gibson, under new leadership with CEO James Curleigh, introduced a new line of electric guitars, dividing the lineup into the vintage inspired Original Collection and the contemporary designed Modern Collection. With these changes was birthed a new Gibson Les Paul Standard, available as either a 50s or 60s model in a variety of finishes. The coveted Les Paul Goldtop is now available as a 50s Standard model, restoring the historic gold color to the "standard" nameplate. What Gibson has effectively done is answer the cries of Les Paul fans who have been clamoring for the Les Paul Standard to represent the historic flagship guitar that made it famous. The 50's Les Paul Standard features a traditional mahogany body with maple cap and zero weight relief. The rounded 50's style mahogany neck is topped with a rosewood fingerboard and trapezoid inlays. All of the classic hardware is present with an ABR-1 bridge, deluxe tuners and keystone tuning buttons. The burstbucker PAF style pickups and wired to audio taper pots and orange cap capacitors. The is no longer a PCB board with direct soldered pots. Les Paul fans rejoice! The big questions on everyone's mind with the new line is whether or not quality had improved. The internet has been a buzz for years with horror stories of guitars that never should have left the factory. Gibson assured everyone that under the new leadership regime quality would be a priority. With that in mind, we get candid about what we have seen in the past and what we see on this new guitar. Check it out!

    Got mine Goldtop 50s with humbuckers few days ago and just started exploring this magnificient guitar. I wondered between Classic and 50s, between tobacco sunburst and GT. I am so glad I decided for 50s, that vintage feel, tones and body resonance is unbeliveable!

    Gibson is back in a big way. I bought a Heritage Cherry 50’s Standard and it’s KILLER. I can’t find anything to complain about in terms of quality and NO the pick guard nut is not digging into the top. I did remove the factory strings, oil the board and lower the action a tiny bit. This is normal for any guitar you buy...personal preference. I’ve played for 40 years and owned tons of guitars. I’ve been a pro guitar repair guy as well. This is the best regular production guitar Gibson has made in forever. I love the the fact that when you change setting with the volume/tone controls they actually respond now. Going from 10 down to 8 actually affects the tone...awesome! No buzzes or dead spots or sharp fret ends are anywhere to be found. If Gibson stays on this road they will win over many new buyers.

      I bought the exact guitar, and agree 100%. It is flawless, and plays like a dream, along with zero tuning issues. I just wanted a simple no frills well made guitar and this is it! Im glad I put it off because of the weight relief, and other things that turned me off over the last few years. They listened!

      I’m the guy who got the pick guard nut injury. In addition, the bridge pickup was dead. Not sure if it was wiring or the pickup itself. Anyways, they exchanged it for a near identical cherry burst in a slight flame top. It is exactly as people are saying. Absolutely no regrets whatsoever, it is art.

      @@Rhythmicons fretboard binding harsh tool marks. (also on rosewood). Scratches on side of body. The main one that bothers me is this sort of "dimple" (concave dent like) in the maple top. Only noticeable in certain POV/lighting but when its there its very annoying. Two of them had it, i would have kept them if they didn't have the dimples. If i moved the guitar around with a light source above, i would get the light source reflection to hit the dimple and the light source when it a crazy distorted fashion. So i ran my finger along it and noticed it was indented.

    Ordered a BRAND NEW.... 2019 Gibson LP 60's that was "supposed" to be PLEK'd (even customer service at Gibson rep confirmed) BUT? The G string was HIGHER than the other strings on the nut. (Like .017...YES! The nut was simply cut too high!). Had a terrible time getting the "right" chord tones. Exchanged it for the 2019 Gibson LP 50's style (Heritage Cherry Burst) and DOUBLED CHECKED "factory settings" AT THE LOCAL MUSIC establishment before heading home with it. I am MUCH HAPPIER, now. Just an FYI to personally inspect these models for proper string sets at the nut. LOVE my Gibson and I believe that Gibson is "trying" to improve their QA...but this was just unsatisfactory.

    As someone else here said premier guitar recently toured The New factory and people weren't even wearing gloves or masks while painting which is very dangerous. • @benjaminbaggins7590
    @benjaminbaggins7590 3 года назад

    The amount of apologism on the internet for Gibson guitar quality should signal a red flag for serious guitar buyers. I just don't see this amount of content for other brands. The fact that Gibson allows so many pricey guitars to leave the factory with various flaws and blemishes is unnacceptable. I have a 2020 SG. It plays and sounds great, I really do love it. But it arrived with a slightly crookedly placed D string tuner(which I adjusted myself), and the usual fit and finish issues you see all over the internet: most notably where the binding and the neck meet. You can see and feel the separation on the Low E side. the High E side does have that rounded edge feel it's supposed to have. I was pleased to see they didn't allow any glue to seep onto the fretboard from the nut, but there is some glue that seeped onto the headstock. Some of the finish has already begun to crack away from the nut. Again, I love how the guitar plays and sounds, but I just feel let down. And I'm not going through the whole drawn-out proccess of sending it back. Overall, I really like the guitar. But I will not be buying another Gibson until they seriously sort out their QC issues.

      Look at used collings city limits guitars and if you don't like their more boutiquey pickups, put in a set of gibson pickups. Some of the standard CLs go for $3k used or just less from time to time, and the deluxes can be had if you wait for $3k-$3500 used. It sounds like a stretch to buy one, but I have had 9 or 10 gibsons, and six used collings guitars. Not a single one of the gibsons was anywhere close (new or used) to all of the used collings guitars. Not any single gibson was close to any of the collings. It's uncanny. Gibson is toast. The white collar retirees and near retirees are going disappear from the market and the company will fold. Between then and now, I still have four to dump - in the last 6 months or so, the used price of gibson guitars appears to have dropped about 20% (meaning my guitars dropped in value. Lovely), and I have bought and sold used collings guitars (not making money, albeit, but not losing much, either) playing around with them and all have sold for what I paid for them, costing me only listing fees on reverb.
      OK...just counted. I've had 12 gibsons. Two of them were standout, one was completely defective (Gibson left me hanging on that, it was in my youth, but still counts against them. Cost me as a college kid about the equivalent of $1K in value loss), most of the rest have had stability issues or other quality problems with a couple other than the two standouts being good guitars.
      All of the collings guitars have been perfect. From 5 to 13 years old.

      I too live in Ontario Canada and have said the same thing. It is funny as hell poeple are fooled by something so simple. Remember when the 2017 les Paul standard with a AAA flame top and a compounded radius neck was 3100? My 2017 HP Standard has a 4a flame top in Blueberry burst with the all access heel, and now the new Hp say it's a flame top but you can't see it because is only comes completely painted over. It could be the cheapest piece of whatever with filler in it and we wouldn't know the difference, along with a crappy new neck joint for the same price, But hey they put an ebony fingerboard on it so that make it all worth while.

    Nearly 12 months ago I tried out a Gibson 57 Reissue Gold Top with aged hardware..... It was premium priced, it had all the documents and really looked special BUT it was so well made to the original specs, it felt just like a Gibson Les Paul Standard....which as how the original 1957 Les Pauls felt....I had a a hard time justifying he Custom Shop price and eventually said No. Yes, well made, great player, BUT, it felt no better than a Les Paul from any era that played well and passed through the QC procedure in good shape.... So pleased that Gibson is now putting out a 50s Standard, that's more like what most players would aspire to for a period type guitar.

      As someone who has owned both, I can say the difference between a USA and Custom shop model is pretty substantial if you're measuring quality and not quantity. Both will do the same job pretty much equally well, but there is something about the extra attention, skilled craftsmanship, and artistic detail that you can literally feel with the CS model. To a lot of folks that's not really important or worth it, but to a lot of other folks it is :)

    • @GuitaristDog87
      @GuitaristDog87 4 года назад

      I don't know why Gibson can't make a production line of faithful '58/'59/'60 reissues priced closer towards the working class musicians. With Fender, if you can't afford a Custom Shop reissue ('57, '62 etc.') you have lower priced but just as great options with the MIA American Vintage/Original or even the MIM Classic series with almost if not, all of the exact specifications. Gibson just churns out a quasi '50s or '60s type Les Paul but it's still nowhere near the real thing, they shouldn't be priced as high as driving vehicles.

      I just got a les paul h 140 heritage 1996 for 1200. Made in Kalamazoo. I feel they are just as good as a good gibson and rarely ever put out a dud. Yeah it's used and a lil dinged up in some spots but not on the neck where it matters and I love a old beast that has proven its ability over the decades. They make newer models still but this one is special to me : )
      So your chances of getting a good les paul from the heritage are higher. Sadly they don't make SGs, acoustics, fire birds, flying vs, explorers etc but what they do make pretty much rivals or tops the Gibson counter part.

    I bought a brand-new 50's Les Paul in Tobacco Burst. The nut was terribly executed. I had to change it out, and I did so with an unbleached bone nut. I also had to change the bridge out for a Nashville one so I could get the low E to intonate correctly. From the factory, it was ever so sharp and the saddle was already flipped and maxed out in its adjustment. The Nashville solved that problem. Other than those two items the guitar is as perfect as I could ever expect it to be. While I was at it I changed all the hardware out for nickel-plated versions so they would get that aged patina after a while. Now I love my Les Paul!

    It’s always good to have pictures, because then we can send them to the appropriate division so that they can do something about it.

      I don't think it got by anybody. More than likely it was thrown in the failheap and someone from management saw it and told them to make fudge and pass it along. The unfortunate thing is someone (not necessarily Gibson) is fudging the customer by not identifying them as such. This leaves the customer base to do the bin sorting so to speak. I think the dealers know which ones aren't quite up to snuff but that they choose to just toss em in with the rest in the hopes of making an extra buck off a b stock guitar. If they weren't getting a substantial discount on them the dealers would be sending them back instead of selling them. I think it's just a "buyer beware" situation where everyone up the chain is being as shady as they can get away with, not necessarily dishonest but not so honest either :)

  • @daw162
    @daw162 5 лет назад +1

    Curleigh the greasy jeans model isn't going to do anything about quality. There was a video recently with a $5400 custom les paul with the bridge way off center. Why would they even let that out let alone have it featured in a video? I don't mean it was a little off, either. WAY off leaving little room for strings on the high e side before they go over the side onto the frets.
    Their prices have gone in the right direction. But, I've noticed that on ebay that the actual sales have gone way down, too. In average actual sold price, that is. It's possible to get a recent standard for $1500-$1800 from BIN offer listings (some of those guitars sold for $3300+).
    I"ve had 9 gibson guitars in my lifetime, and started building last year. I ran into collings a couple of years ago, a used CL deluxe. The same price as a gibson standard was at the time. The collings guitar is made at a level that I cannot make a guitar. What happened to less expensive? The price hasn't changed. Your saleing these guitars so ofcourse your not gonna have anything negative to say about them as that just hurts your sales. Don't get me wrong I love the Gibson sound but I've herd others say theres a dull spot in the neck pickup. I've seen a few demos as well where I could actually hear it myself. Couldn't really tell from this demonstration though as it did sound nice in the hands of the guy playing here. I think if one wants a completely unbiased opinion on Gison Les Paul's, do alot of research before you buy because just because this particular guitar came set up nicely dosent mean the next one will. Alot of guys are right on the verge of springing for one of these and alls it takes is a video like this to send you over the edge & whatever you get your stuck with and you'll eventually learn for yourself all the things about your guitar no one told you to begin with. You should know just because a guitar is the same model dosent meant they are all precisely the same. If you know what to look for by educating yourself, chances are you'll be alot happier with your dream guitar down the road!!!

    No, they haven't fixed a thing. I got one of these a few days ago that I had to order from out of state, and of course there are problems. Either the pick up rings are bad or they drilled the holes wrong to where they pull the ring out of shape...on the neck pickup, there's a gap so big I can see the BODY CAVITY through it and a nickel size finish flaw (looks like a bubble) where the strap button is. DO NOT BUY A GIBSON THAT YOU HAVEN'T PHYSICALLY CHECKED FROM TOP TO BOTTOM. I'm trying to return mine. Which will be a nightmare. Buy an Epihone for 1/5 of the price and drop good pickups in it instead. Gibson must QC guitars in the dark.

You can even hear it in this video - they sound harsh and cheap. My burst buckets in my 07’ R8 are so much better that it isn’t even close. With gain they might be fine but clean they are noticeably dull - I modded it to 50’s wiring which helped with clarity but still not a warm rounded/clear tone.

    I think quality consistency might improve a little, but I'm betting the overall quality (what you're actually getting for your money) is going to go down. We can already see a dumbing down of the model lines and more of a metrics driven process approach at work. There will be less flaws only because there is less to fuck up. Instead of a guitar that's built by highly skilled human labor with the associated variances (flaws?) we'll get guitars made by robot like semi-skilled labor that are perfectly consistent but with little to no individual character. I really think that history will mark 2018 as the end of Gibson's finest era. They'll still make good guitars, but they won't be what they used to in true qualitative terms like artisanship, unique character, and the feeling you get when you find one that "fits" your own character :)

But when playing in the late fifties, no one wanted a les paul because many were not well made and they were heavy,and good luck finding one that would stay in tune., if you could ever get it in tune at all
    Thats why people bought the telecaster, and Stratocaster. .

      @@Axess-sv8nq Epiphone guitars are exceptional (the higher end ones especially) but there is a reason gibson guitars are very expensive. Most sub 1000 lp style guitars come with a poli finish that is not labor intensive, because its easy to work with. The nitrocellulose finish on gibson lps is a lot more labour intensive and that alone bumps up the price. Also the wood that gibson uses is more expensive. They use real flamed maple tops and not caps, and the mohogany is better quality. Of course wood and finish doesnt effect the sound of the isntrument very much.
