By the way, people say veneer like its a dirty word. Wood veneers are just that, they are thinly sliced wood that allows you to get the most beautiful appearance without the cost of a thicker slab. The fact that the veneer is over a Maple cap means that it has all the tonal characteristics of a Gibson (if you believe in that sort of thing) but without the added cost of a flame Maple cap. Don't mistake this for "photo flame" which was a method of using photo recreations of flame Maple that were then glued onto the guitar body. Photo flame is NOT wood, veneer IS.
The only thing that a veneer might do is cover up a multi piece maple cap. Fender does that with their sunburst budget guitars, as Epiphone has done with the SG where you can see 4 -or 5 panels on the edges but the top and back look solid. These 2 Earphones don't sound like they're having any sonic set backs if that's the case though. I still don't like the Epiphone name on a Les Paul though. Just brand it as an import Gibson Les Paul.
@@jrp7837 I've seen some multi-dimension Epi caps. In fact I have one on my LP standard, plus you can see the wood grain running against the flame. Maybe mine's an exception.
@@30smsuperstrat Les Paul worked at Epiphone and started his work there, so an argument can be made that the Epiphone version has the pedigree. I get what your saying about just slapping the Gibson name on it and call it a day, but then that would be all they sold and wouldn't be able to charge $2000-$7000 for guitars, lol.
As much as I love the chemistry between Chappers and El Capitan, I have to say the jams have reached a totally different level with Bea and DP. Also love the fact that Pete has his own purple goggles, lol. More of this, please!
I’ve got a 2019 Epiphone LP plus top pro, and basically it sounds and plays just as good as my friends 2010 Gibson LP. The Epi is a bit brighter, but if you play through pedals with a bit of meat it’s nearly impossible to tell the difference, and after set up, both actions are the same. These new Epi LPs are the bomb. I think I might have to get me a 50s version.
You both are what we call musicians. That last jam was epic. And the new Les Paul line up is drool-worthy. This time around, Epiphone just became Gibson's savior. Can't wait for these guitars to reach Philippine shores.
I think if you get one of these and you get them properly set up by a tech and then swap the pickups you can get yourself a guitar that sounds and plays like a Gibson and still costs like half the price. Great stuff. And the new headstock is just sexy.
Agreed. I got one of the 50s Les Pauls and plan on swapping the pickups and wiring loom for a set of BKP Stormy Mondays and a vintage spec loom and I reckon it will sound bloody close to my old Gibson Traditional.... Certainly close enough to keep me happy for now.... I still want a pukka Gibson though 🤷♂️😂
I have a 2006 Gibson Les Paul Standard worth in excess of $2500 and one of the new 2020 Epiphone Les Paul Classics that cost me $450. The Epiphone feels great and sounds great. I was fortunate to have a very good setup out of the box. (Thanks Guitar Center!) Do they sound identical? Of course not. Does the Gibson sound $2000 better? No way. The Gibson has sustain for days, but the Epiphone is no slouch. I am very happy with both.
If you were to swap the pickups several times over between the Epi’s and Gibs, you would not know the difference. Well done Epi team. I’m a proud owner of one, put in my favourite pickups and it’s my favourite guitar in my collection. You guys got some great classic grooves going and fancy licks between you. The expressions in your faces are of sheer joy when you started to dig in - that says it all. Every guitarist should have an LP, they are that good.
Why are you doing this to me guys??? I had to run out for something urgent but NO! I had to sit through 30 minutes of this insanity!! Wow! This was so informative and you guys playing together is pure bliss. Thank you both and please keep these precious videos coming. You are doing something very important to loads of up and coming guitarists. You are the best!
I have a 2019 Epi plus top pro, it had high action, a nut that was too high and frets that needed a level and crown. Not a problem as I do guitar set up, but worth considering if you're thinking of buying one. Unfortunately looking at Trogly's youtube channel and all the comments from repair shops on there it doesn't seem an isolated problem. At this price point QC should not allow high frets and high nut action to pass. Its not rocket science - you pay someone in the factory to check frets with a fret rocker and check the action at the first fret for the nut ! If Harley Benton can do it at 1/4 the price then so can Epiphone/Gibson ! Anderton's as a large retailer please give them a kick up the arse to sort this out !
It might be more useful to the guitar buyer to compare these guitars to the previous Epiphone Standard range. Are the new ones different/better? Should we try to get the older series instead, while they're still around?
The new Epi series is a definite step up fron the older version. Even in Anderton's previous comparisons, I've NEVER heard Epiphone sound this good next to the Gibson. Especially the 50's model. I would personally save up and get the Gibby instead, but nothing wrong with scratching the les paul itch on a budget. I've just been around long enough to know that buying budget guitars is a huge sink hole of expenditure. At one point my place was filled with Mexican strats and les paul copies by different manufacturers that I bought through the years. One day I added up the tally and realized that with that money plus all I spent on modifications, I could have bought at least 3 high end Gibsons. But instead, I had a bunch of modded budget items, while still dreaming of owning the high end stuff one day. Well, life is too short for that. I then sold everything (Unfortunately at a loss, as is always the case with budget guitars), and got myself an American deluxe stratocaster and later a Gibson Les Paul standard. I'm now saving up again for either a Gibson SG '61, or the new 50s les paul standard. But boy, is it tempting to get one of these new Epis with the excuse that it's a back-up to my Gibson. Decisions, decisions.
I have the epiphone les paul standard 60's, I make Reggae music and it's a fantastic guitar. It has a perfect tone for Reggae. Of course, for blues and eock it is fantastic. I feel her like a Gibson. Epiphone has now made a great leap in quality and I think it is the way to go. These guitars are already a serious thing. Very well finished. And they are the paul perfection at an affordable price.

"That's not what anybody wants to hear, they want to hear gain..." Too bad! I love metal and yet there's something soothing and pleasing to hear Pete playing the quiet clean chords; I could just listen to that for a while! Especially on such a fine sounding guitar.
Nice kit for the dosh. Through a lively amp, the Epi's have heaps of midrange squawk and a nice 'plinky' crystalline tone in the middle position. Well done Epiphone, you're making axes for the pub & club muso now...no more worries about having your pride and joy guitars pinched or damaged. All the tone and looks with none of the price taggery!
And you know, with the models being equivalent across both lines, a club musician could buy the Gibson for recording, and grab the same model Epiphone for the bars!
best combination i ever seen of two superbly talented musicians bouncing off each other...love the way Rabea chased Pete with the backing tone right near the end you could hear Rabea prompting the tempo on ... great stuff.... well i dream of playing like that ...i can lay 1000,s bricks i give it all up to play once like that ...well done the 2 lads.
In their eyes, i see what everyone always wanted as a teenager: an Epiphone Les Paul that is close enough, especially in terms of tone. Please make a review on the Les Paul Classic. Those are 90 pounds cheaper and the Honey Burst is simply amazing. The Customs are also amazing looking.
Look at the specs on these Epiphone 50's standard les Paul's all high end you're getting a real high end Les Paul for $650.00 American dollars but they are going up again next year 2022 another $100 American dollars I was told would expect in 2 years they will cost $1,000 American dollars and well worth it Les Paul would be very happy with these and what a Wonderful job Scott Lewis and his American and Chinese craftsman did at the Epiphone facility
That closing jam was Mega! Lee could sell those demo models under the "Anderton's Quickly Broken-in Series" and get a premium price. Nice work guys. Really nice work. Thanks
Pete says, "Anyway, that's not what anyone wants to hear. They want to hear gain..." I want to voice my preference for clean playing. It allows one to hear the nuances of the guitar and player better--and you guys are great players!
So refreshing to watch a video like this. Two guys just having fun and showing what these guitars can do. They proove there is no need to sit and pick apart a $600 guitar like some guys on the internet do. You know those guys "this fret is 1 mm higher than the others" and "I cant believe this $600 guitar doesnt come with a case". Great job guys!!
Well to be fair, their playstyle genres are different, so it's just a matter of which genre you prefer. Pete's like a country, bluesy lead guitar Rabea is like Rock to hard rock Rob is Metal And Captain is the kid all three of them are teaching! Lol.

I've just bought my 15 year old grandson a 50s Epiphone Gold Top Les Paul. Out of interest I watched this blindfold test. First off I must congratulate the two of you for such amazing playing...your end jam was fabulous. The revue has convinced me that I have bought a terrific guitar and my grandson will love it.
The final jam was SIIIIIIICK!!! As for Epiphone guitars, they are beautiful and average souding but what worries me the most are Trogly's and other RUclipsrs getting guitars with flat frets... Definitely gotta to try them in shops instead of ordering them online.
The new specs are great, hopefully the issues trogly had were just caused by the massive changes and the quality will become more consistent over time.
Even with RUclips audio compression, the Gibson guitars had just soooo much 'bigger' a sound. I normally struggle with hearing differences but it was totally obvious to me in this case..
On video they all look nice, but to my ears I could pick the Gibson ones out right away. More clarity overall and there is something about the Gibson's in the upper part of the midrange that the Epi's just don't give. For the price point, most will be happy with the Epi, but I'm still saving up for a Gibson Standard 50's goldtop.
I love these guys, these demos have gotten so much better recently and there's actual music being played and not just scales or shreds. Well done lads.
That right there is why I keep coming back to this channel. Just the unabashed joy of jamming, talking smack, talking gear, keeping it fun! It wouldn't even matter if I was on the market for a new LP. Great show, guys.
I've been really looking forward to this one as I'm really into the idea of getting an Epigibson, cheers Andertons folks! Also 7:09 haha poor Lee, he's getting a lot of banter for that lick! Ps love the questionnaire popup at around 17 mins. Feels all interactive and stuff
I blinded myself too, and the result was the same as yours, I couldn't tell the difference. OMG looking forward to the modern series blindfold challenge.
I started to learn classical guitar as a small child and in 1993 as a fresh teenager i got a Squire strat. Had a German guitar teacher at school who couldn’t offer the patience a kid with ADHD needed so got frustrated and quit. During lockdown, as a 40 year old teenager i got myself a (very) used 1970 Zenta strat to see if I wanted to carry on my learnings 17 years later and i was hooked. Unlike as a child picking out my birthday present when I was all about Clapton I got myself a 60’s 2020 Epiphone and I can’t tell you how much extra drive it gave me. What a thing. I’ve never played a Gibson, to be honest i avoided even picking one up while I was in the shop deciding if 50’s or 60’s was for me. I’ll try and keep it that way as this thing feels completely proper, I’m not kidding i do not understand at all how it can be 4+ times the price of mine. Have it playing through a Marshall MG50 which cost me less than £200. How has the world changed this much that you can get sounds and feelings for £700? I’m pretty sure in 93 the Squire was about £300, even in the days before our Government’s screwed over the pound so much! Don’t know why anyone needs to read this, but there you go.
We probably (and hopefully) won't see Rob all to often here in the Future... They even made Pete his own blindfold whereas in the past theyd just given him Robs
The best review on this channel in a long long time. The Captain should have been sitting there handing y'all guitars and constantly cranking the knobs on the pedals!!! Gentlemen - If you two keep this up the Chapman fellow will quickly be forgotten. This review had chemistry and the playing was AWESOME.
Digging That Vibe. Andertons at its finest right here. Andertons two most musical guitarists truly riffing off each other. This one really goes to show that it the not the instrument in hand. It s the player the holds it.
adiohead haha he knew what was what. The differences are small. But to even a semi trained ear, it’s not too hard to pick. His ear is well passed “semi trained”.
I like the finishes especially the cherry sunburst which I am not usually a fan of, and they seem to have a nice sheen to them rather than being overly glossy.
Honestly these guys are really talented at improvising. I just felt the need to comment that on this specific video even tho I’ve been watching you guys for a little while now. Your guys phrasing is just really good and you pick really awesome notes when you’re soloing and really go outside the pentatonic scale a lot and have a lot of nuance to your playing. You guys make these “every day mans“ guitars sound pretty damn sweet, and as someone who can’t always afford the higher end stuff I appreciate that a lot. These guys just do a good job of demoing guitars, flat out
Wow ! The lead stuff that Rabea was doing in the very beginning of the video was as tasty as anything I've ever heard him play ! Fantastic, so much feel and touch ! Cheers mate !! Loved it
My 60's standard in ebony arrived today - it is lovely the fret work is great it plays beautifully and sounds awesome. I bought one of the Line6 Pro HDx's earlier this month and have set up a nice cleanish Soldano patch and it really works a treat. Thanks guys :)
OK so I'm listening to this w my good headphones...those guitars sound album worthy...but the Gibson sounds a tad bit...beefier...I wouldn't say it sounds better...I think what it would come down to if you were recording and were shooting for how the guitar sound would be in the mix, it wouldn't be out of bounds to say to have both handy...would depend on the frequencies in the recording that it would be competing/ blending with to determine which one fits better in a given soundscape...just my opinion...thanks for doing this one...
RobTackettCovers Agreed. I’m surprised at Rabea though... hearing what he perceived as a more trebly sounding guitar (when listening to the 50s models) and concluding, wrongly, that that would be the Epiphone? To me one of the marks of a really good Les Paul is the upper mid and treble response.
absolute guarantee if anyone was playing one of these on stage you wouldn't,shouldnt and couldnt tell the difference between a gibson and an epiphone.period
@@peoplewithpixels Oh, absolutely...a $600 one of those "inspired by" is going to sound great in a Friedman just like a $3k plus Les Paul will...maybe do these demo's with like priced guitar AND amp compared to a premium priced Gibson and amp combo might be the thing to consider doing...
@@peoplewithpixels I was also thinking in regard amps, I wonder if a guitar that might have great tuning stability, but just doesn't sound that great, if a guitar like that can make a really great amp sound not that great, or if it's hard for a 'not so great' guitar to make a great amp sound crappy...I know that a crappy amp can make a great guitar sound rough, but not so sure if it's as easy the other way around, hahahahaha!...anyway, thanks for the great comment...also would be cool to find out later that Hey, it's Paul was Paul McCartney...also thought maybe Hey, it's Paul might be Paul Hindmarsh from Line 6...am I right on either? Did I win back stage passes if it's that fellow that wrote Penny Lane, or if it's that great guitarist from Line 6, maybe won one of those JTV-89F with the Ebony fretboard? Ha, jus' kidding; who ever you are, hope you have a great day!
That's it I want an epiphone les Paul. Now you don't here me say that much.... Errr, this is the first time. Finally epiphone have an instrument worth buying, they truly nailed it... Big time with these Gibson inspired series.
@@Krupi.Guitars the biggest thing you're paying for with Gibsons is labor costs. They pay livable wages here. They use more or less slave labor in China and Indonesia to make guitars. I'm at a point in my life now where I'd rather have less guitars than support that.
HOLY FUCK, that jam at the end had me actually clapping ( it's 12:15 am here in NYC). they play really well together, and you can hear and see them nudging each other on during their leads, trying to get the other to play out of their comfort zone. i mean Pete was straight up trying to shred and you can see him smile when he notices what he's doing.
@@BarrySW19 Truth! Gibson bought them out and devalued the Epiphone name. Oldschool corporate near sited biz culture. Its almost silly watching them for the past 20 years trying to undo (but not too much, we wouldnt want any competition to dilute gibsons market value! harumph, harumph) as I twirl my non exsistant old timey handle bar mustache. 🤣🤘
I don’t want to use the “Bright” word, so I will say that the Epis have more glass. And in a live situation that’s better. The 59 LPs I love because of the big neck but some of them get too wooly. With a set of good pickups and a great set up, I think the Epi will do the job well.
@@kianhowtan2429 Ergonomics in some cases. For my case with bigger palms and thicker construction strength non limber fingers it adds structure to palm for thumb over chords and more thumb pivot points on back of neck and also space to allow wider spread. Spread your fingers apart palm up and now start to bring your thumb in closer to the middle and you will notice as distance closes the spread lessens (typically). Untill I played a vintage 50s pre cbs and gibson I didnt realize that Ive been buying the hardest guitars to play in my case anyway. But YMMV.
The new headstock design looks SOO much better. That was my biggest gripe with epiphones tbh. Most play well and sound good, but the headstock was damn ugly
@@JamieClark except the headstock angle isn't a solid piece of wood on epiphone like they are on gibsons. The headstock is a second piece of wood cut diagonally to fit on the neck, so it doesn't break nearly as much since the woodgrain follows the angle.
@@JamieClark the break angle is still there in the headstock, however gibson makes the whole neck (including the break angle) out of one piece of wood with no joint at the angle, instead machining the whole thing out of one block of wood. This decreases strength at the angle since the wood grain isn't lining up with the angle, but (supposedly) improves the sound somehow. Epiphone joins the headstock out of a separate piece of wood to the neck and glues the headstock to the neck. This means the wood grain of the headstock actually follows the break angle, and is nearly as strong as just having a solid piece of wood, but it apparently doesn't sound as good. I have an epiphone les paul special and in my own experience, the thing was on a stand that tipped over and slammed headstock first onto the ground. One of the tuners popped out and that needed to be fixed, but other than that it was fine. So basically, epiphones still have the break angle, but they are made in a way that doesn't sacrifice strength for some placebo sound benefit.
It's still a Chinese copy. It will NEVER be a Les Paul. You will always still want the real thing. Gibson knows this, Chappers said this himself. I have purchased REAL Gibsons new for the cost of the better Chibsons shown here. Both cost under $800 new with a factory case. Knowing that why buy Chinese copies. Legal Chibsons.
Gonna make a contentious comment here. Anyone reviewing these new epiphone Guitars affiliated with a shop ie GAK, Guitar Guitar, Andertons say they are amazing, play like butter. Independent reviewers such as Trogly or Fine tuning have mentioned that these new Guitars have had terrible QC issues. Are shops channels being sent better setup Guitars to review?
andertons have very high standards of quality control each one is fully checked if it does meet their standard its sent back i have visited their shop several times if you are in the uk their shop is worth a visit
Trogly did point out some imperfections and QC issues, including the use of poly lacuer, but he still said they were great sounding guitars that played well once set up properly, and imo any guitar you buy new should need a full set up anyway
Sounded 100% authentic to me. Actually, I'm just starting to come around the idea that Epiphone may finally be getting their sh!t together. Ive been avoiding them for many years. I'm surprised at how impressed I am. Its time to make a pilgrimage to the music store and get one in my hands.
@@IPushHard Yes. At Epiphones price point a good set up is to be expected. Having 5 to 9 high frets, no! I'm a tech with my own shop and I really like Epiphone guitars, so it's not much of an issue for me personally, just aggravating. I feel really bad when some kid comes in because the guitar he worked two summers doing odd jobs to pay for sounds like crap and I have to tell him he needs a fret job. As long as it doesn't require a full level, which is unusual, I'll only charge him around $40 to do a set up, level, crown and polish 6 or 7 of them. But I feel terrible doing it. I know $40 is a ton of money for a kid. If I could throw it out there, I've started buying PRS guitars and every one has been perfect. Even the $500 Standard 24 SE. When I buy a new Epiphone I plan on doing a leveling when I get home, when I get a PRS in the same price range I take it home and play.
The EPI 1960 Tribute Plus was the best bang for your buck in 2014 when I bought mine. I will have to try one of these my next trip to the guitar shop! I bet if you put a set of Gibson 57 Classics in these new models, you probably would not be able to tell the difference!
I havent listened to them yet but... I skipped the jam so I didnt see the guitars really much at all. When Pete holds both up at the beginning I paused it before he said anything and I couldnt see the headstocks. That Epiphone looks better to me imo. Plastics match up better. Paint job is deep and dark over that better looking flame maple... Then they zoom out and its the Gibson he sits down. That is one nice looking Epiphone at a glance. Lets see how it sounds.
Crazy outplay guys , great playing.... Epiphone has upped their game on these. Damn I still have a late 80's standard that plays great, but there's a difference in these new pickups.
My argument is that it doesn't matter whether the audience can tell the difference in the gear. If what I'm playing through inspires me then the audience will be able to tell the difference in my playing.
As a working guitarist, I teach 45 lessons a week and gig in bands ranging from Yacht Rock to New Wave to country. Moderately priced, well set-up Swiss Army guitars are where it’s at. My $600 MIM Standard Strat with H/S/H and coil splitting can get any realistic tone I could possibly need. Plus, I don’t sob myself to sleep if it gets a little scrape or ding. I would never spend more than a grand on any guitar...most working, gigging players who aren’t endorsers don’t either...
So it’s bye-bye Chappers after the recent storm? Personally I’d rather have Rabea over Rob any day as he has a more broad playing catalogue rather than just shred most of the time.
I’m about 11 months late in watching this review and commenting. I had been saving for another Gibson LP as a backup, but will have to seriously consider one of these now. I would also like to see more Pete and Rabea reviews like this one. Those two certainly have a “Jam Magic” about them!

I think if you get one of these and you get them properly set up by a tech and then swap the pickups you can get yourself a guitar that sounds and plays like a Gibson and still costs like half the price. Great stuff. And the new headstock is just sexy.
I doubt you could really hear the difference in sound - especially in a band context. Set up would be much more useful than pickup swap
Less than half the price actually
Headstock is sexy? In my eyes it's hideous...
These two guys are phenomenal guitar players, great chemistry and good blokes !!!
Totally agree. They really play wonderfully together.
Apparently 2020 Epiphone QC did the blindfold challenge.
Can somebody get this man a bigger like button!
someone has been watching Trogly's videos lately ;)
LOL!
Nah. That's pointless as they're different specs completely.
We all know the real tone comes from the chair you sit on and the shampoo you use nothing else
i thought it came from the gauge of hair brush ?
@@haus05 brush gauge only makes a small difference if you have a lighter handle itll he easier to use wheres a heavy handle will hurt your hand a little bit

Too bad! I love metal and yet there's something soothing and pleasing to hear Pete playing the quiet clean chords; I could just listen to that for a while! Especially on such a fine sounding guitar.
Then go to other brand like PRS, Jackson or Ibanez.
Man, when Bea kicked in the plimsoul 😍😍😍😍
Glad to see Rabea. He is a great player and a classy guy. Together with Pete makes a great video!
Bea's got some sick chops, always impressed by him. Pete is awesome obvs, but I'm always singing his praises. Some love for Bea's phrasing tho!!
it's crazy how incredibly good those epiphones sound
Nice kit for the dosh. Through a lively amp, the Epi's have heaps of midrange squawk and a nice 'plinky' crystalline tone in the middle position. Well done Epiphone, you're making axes for the pub & club muso now...no more worries about having your pride and joy guitars pinched or damaged. All the tone and looks with none of the price taggery!
And you know, with the models being equivalent across both lines, a club musician could buy the Gibson for recording, and grab the same model Epiphone for the bars!
Holy crap Rabea! That tone and solo from about 00:29-01:04 was incredible. It would have sounded right at home on a Steely Dan album. Wow!
there is a solidity to the low end on the Gibsons that's lacking in the Epiphones, even on youtube audio
best combination i ever seen of two superbly talented musicians bouncing off each other...love the way Rabea chased Pete with the backing tone right near the end you could hear Rabea prompting the tempo on ... great stuff.... well i dream of playing like that ...i can lay 1000,s bricks i give it all up to play once like that ...well done the 2 lads.

Rabea playing the riff -- greatest troll ever!!! Love ya guys!
The jam session at the end of this really was sick. Would watch all day.
This was certainly a breath of fresh air!! I love it. Hope to see Rabea and Pete do more stuff together like this. Absolutely brilliant !!

Great video. These two play insanely well. Hope to see Bea here more often.

The new specs are great, hopefully the issues trogly had were just caused by the massive changes and the quality will become more consistent over time.

The video that many of us were waiting for!

AWSOME JAM Man!!! I’ve been playing Epiphone since the mid ‘60s and the 2020s are Great sounding and looking! Great job!!
That. Final. Jam 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Good to see someone else then Rob or Lee blindfolded ;)
We probably (and hopefully) won't see Rob all to often here in the Future... They even made Pete his own blindfold whereas in the past theyd just given him Robs

I don’t want to use the “Bright” word, so I will say that the Epis have more glass. And in a live situation that’s better. The 59 LPs I love because of the big neck but some of them get too wooly. With a set of good pickups and a great set up, I think the Epi will do the job well.

@@kianhowtan2429 Ergonomics in some cases. For my case with bigger palms and thicker construction strength non limber fingers it adds structure to palm for thumb over chords and more thumb pivot points on back of neck and also space to allow wider spread. The new headstock design looks SOO much better. That was my biggest gripe with epiphones tbh. Most play well and sound good, but the headstock was damn ugly
Matt L still got that “break” angle...
@@JamieClark except the headstock angle isn't a solid piece of wood on epiphone like they are on gibsons. The headstock is a second piece of wood cut diagonally to fit on the neck, so it doesn't break nearly as much since the woodgrain follows the angle.
@@Sheltada Has this always been the case? Is the break angle on old Epi the same as traditional Gibson? (idk, I'm a fender guy myself...)
