As always I really enjoy your videos. I was caught by surprise by the recent Les Paul purchase. There are many Les Paul type guitars out there and some of them are pretty darn good, but there is something special about holding a Gibson. It’s just an extra feeling that you can’t get with an imitator. It’s all over your face as well as you play it.
It feels good in your hands… sounds incredible… looks outstanding… sounds like it’s picked you! You just have to admit she’s your girl… she’s the one! The look on your face when you hold her and play her is one of total bliss! Congratulations, Colin!
Gibson Les Pauls vary in weight due to the different densities in the wood. Two pieces of mahogany cut to the same shape can have vastly different weights due to differences in density. As far as the neck shape, CNC machines will carve the basic shape, but the final sanding and shaping are done by hand. Whoever worked on that neck created the final shape. BTW, there are a number of Les Pauls with asymmetrical necks including the Moderns, Traditional Pros, Classics, and a few others. I have a GT with an asymmetrical neck as well as a Trad Pro V and a recent Classic with asymmetrical necks. I think you have a keeper.
Flame and burst is so subjective and it has to be just the right combination for the player. I got so fed up of burst chasing that I settled on a plain black Gibson LP Classic. Nice slim neck and coil taps ans phase switches. Bang for buck for sure.
Great video Colin, got my ‘burst new in 1992. The standard then was £799 and the shop had a white Custom for £999 (I was happy to take either but Gary Moore played a Standard) so if £2,200 is the price for a Standard now how can they justify £5,000+ for a custom these days?
It's amazing how important icons are for us as human beings. Of course you can play a lot of other guitars, of course you can play another single cuts, but... there is something actually special in this particular model, whatever iteration of it you might get.
It's worse then that... All my guitars I can set up at 1.5mm at the 12th fret without buzzing are the ones I play most, instead of the ones I set up at 2mm. Crazy!😂

Great review. The 3-D quality of the top is called chatoyancy, in case you're interested. I bought a 2022 50's tobacco burst, and the neck is CLEARLY a 60's neck - which is perfect for me. I don't know how this is happening at Gibson, but yours is now the 2nd example I know of.
I think it looks awesome without the pickgard, I vote pretty emptively to leave the gard, scratch plate, whatever! Off. Great video as always Collin!!! Thanks for all the hard work, much appreciated!!!
Seems like a really nice guitar, Colin! Enjoyed hearing the clean playing run thru - good chance to hear the 3 pick-up settings and the 'personality' of each certainly comes thru. For me the slimmer neck would be a definite plus, some 50's standards I've tried feel too chunky, but not surprising since my one and only Gibson is the 68 Custom I bought in 1974 so I'm used to the 60's slimmer neck. I get the GAS thing, I enjoy visiting various websites and stuff and seem to find something I 'must have' every week or so but have managed to 'step away' - my purchases over the Covid era have been the Epiphone 1959 & Wino (I get a discount here) and a nice Japanese made 2018 Gretsch solid body (which I got half price - a 2018 guitar is considered 'old stock' at Tom Lee here in HK!). All going well sometime in the future I'll seal the deal on that SB59/v I tried in Shenzen and then, maybe, a Pro II Strat with a rosewood neck, which is a beautiful guitar. Want, don't need 😆
I had one and it was phenomenal, one of the best sounding LPs I ever had but after a couple of years I just couldn't bond with the neck so I recently traded it for an older ESP Horizon. I already miss it but just play the ESP better. Great review!
I have the Std. 60's and I LOVE IT. Gibson is knocking it out the park IMO. Would I make small changes to the bridge? Yes. But other than that - the sound and feel is unmatched.

Seems like a great example of a Les Paul Standard. It looks great! I'd like to see what you think of the finish over time. I'd also like to see if it sounds better with a set of Seymour Duncan Seth Lovers or something comparable. I wouldn't mind the tarnishing, some people pay extra for that.
Have tried a few different pickup sets in my 2019 50's LP Standard. The Burstbuckers it came with are hard to beat. Tried the SD Seth Lovers and 59's, as well as a few different boutique brands. The two sets I liked best were the Lollar Imperials and the Lambertones Crema, both were fantastic! Yet the Burstbuckers hold their own.

@@jamesmarkham7489 Les Paul has individual differences. There are also differences in models and parts. If it's the same model and the same pickup, I think weight has something to do with it. Koffoffs guitar was 8lb six ounces. In 2007 they were doing the koffoff reissue at 2500. Can’t get one now under 10,000. Nothing like a real les Paul. Well done.
That looks like a beautiful example of a guitar that would be cherished by its owner. The top is unique enough to give it solid looks and ID character and an owner fingerprint but what really caught my attention was the detail in the carving and the alignment of the pickups knobs carve even the pick guard if you so choose to reinstall it. If the neck feels good its a keeper I had a similar experience with a Tele and it was possibly the best new one that I played. The sound is real good through your Princeton which is what I use to welcome a new axe mainly because they are honest.
I’d been looking for a Goldtop for awhile then came across guitar village in Farnham, They had 3 Goldtops played them all but the one I went for in the end was a 57 custom shop dark back and it weighed 8.1 👍🏼
Your playing always reminds me of a back porch by the river in the evening. I like it. What about a showdown. Your Eastman vs. the standard. I'm commenting too early, its only been 2 minutes lol.

@@SludgedB whether you like it or not Gibson’s do hold their value much better than most of the “cloned” versions and no one can deny that the older ones have risen in value substantially!
Are you new here?, He won't have this guitar ina a few months and the finish will be as it is now😂
Have tried a few different pickup sets in my 2019 50's LP Standard.
If my memory serves, he didn't like the soft finish on his last LP Standard. Granted, he may not keep this one nearly as long. I may be newer than you here, I've only been watching for a couple of years. It's so easy to be a smart ass on these things, I understand why you decided to be one to me. Seems to me we should be pleasant to each other since we're all enjoying the same thing "together". @@NintenDub
You liked the Imperials better than the Seths? Did you like the Seths or the BBs better? @@dlewtweentorla1210
@@jimhova I wasn't being a Smart ass at all. I can't help that you may have been in a mood that you where looking for it to seem that way.i just figured you where new as many of these guitars, make their way on their journey a he can't possibly buy everything out of pocket and keep it.
Lovely Dickey Betts Vibe from the rhythm pick up
I’m sure it’s a cracking guitar but with the tarnishing I’d be sending it back to Andertons .
What interests me the most is its weight.
I wonder if they played all of the same model back to back if there would be a noticeable tone difference due to weight? Seems like a great video sweetwater or andertons could make.

Les Paul has individual differences. There are also differences in models and parts. If it's the same model and the same pickup, I think weight has something to do with it. My favorite Les Paul is 4.2kg so I believe this is my sweet spot. I was looking for a Les Paul to replace this one, and I tried many, but each sounded slightly different.
Congrats!! Fine presentation--and, as always, tasteful playing.
Colin, try to place the scale on hard surface. It can show higher weight on soft surfaces. Worth giving it a try. Thanks for fantastic job! You are the best!
I've got G.A.S.! It's not to your Standard, but I've got it. You look so happy and excited. I'm happy for you too. Thanks!
Even on video you can tell how that one sounds fantastic. Gorgeous top too. I’m all about some 3d flame that changes with the light. It’s just interesting… not boring in any sense. A stunner for sure.
I like that soloing bit you do in the beginning of this one. I was feeling that.
Man, I recently picked up a 2019 Eastman 59SB/V Amber and love it. Thanks for demo’ing that one before. You inspired me to want to find one! 👍
Your videos can be dangerous. Keep it up!
Nice one Ed!... I think they are going to become quite sought after now as I'm told they are stopping doing the aged varnish finish.
@@theguitaristas This was a long work week and it made my day to see some of your latest video on a Friday. I’ll watch all of it tonight. Love what you do here! Take care!
Thanks Col!
Beautiful playing, Colin. Really soulful.
Can’t wait to see your review of the new Gibson SG ;)
I have more than 50 mostly Gibsons Fenders and Prs . My favorite of all is my latest acquisition of Gibson Greeny 59 Standard ... No regrets though I play them all whenever I wish . You got a great one. I like that top. 8.4 is great too ...
Great guitar and vid cheers Colin 🎸🎸🎸
Congratulations! That's a keeper!... and nice playing!
Beauty of the burst book is great isn’t it - that’s a gorgeous les paul
Stunning & legendary, I prefer the sound of this one but find the 60s necks much easier to play.
Great find Col; this is absolutely beautiful! Guitar Addiction Syndrome led to a Goldtop showing up here last week. 🤘🏿
😁👍👍
Koffoffs guitar was 8lb six ounces. In 2007 they were doing the koffoff reissue at 2500. Can’t get one now under 10,000. Nothing like a real les Paul. Well done.
Great Video Colin u have very in depth videos rare these days appreciate it👍👋
That looks like a beautiful example of a guitar that would be cherished by its owner.
So cool! The figuring is spectacular. BTW, KEEP IT. Please man!
Looks and sounds amazing, Col !
Richtone in Rotherham also weigh and photograph individual guitars. That's where I got my LP Standard, very helpful too.
Think I hear a bit of active melody's Dickey Betts lesson 😁😁.
Love your channel man real good stuff.
Side note just got an Epi 59' Les Paul based on your great reviews... better guitar than I deserve.
Have a great weekend man look forward to your videos every week
😆👍 well spotted!... but like always I try to pick up a few bits the night before I record without really practicing!
Congratulations on a beautiful and lighter guitar. 🎉😊 I love my 50’s Standard, but I wish it was the same weight as yours.
WoW! You've won the timber lottery on this one! Great top, great weight for an unchambered mahogany body. Also a nice, dark slab of rosewood for the board. Congrats!!
I've had bad luck with Gibson's. Ordered a Les Paul had to send two back, the one I kept the action could be lowered only to a minimum---despite a fret leveling. Bought a CORT CR300, a Les Paul copy. Solid maple top-@ $649,changed the hardware to locking_swapped the active EMG pickups to a set of Duncan 59s. Slim neck, 8lbs.(All CR300s are consistent in weight). Best guitar I've had. Great video👍🎸
Hi Colin, I read the listing for that beauty as eight point four pounds, which is exactly 8lb, 6.4 oz. Your Friday show is truly 'Weekend begins Here!. Cheers mate.
Love the introduction playing very much early Allmans influence. :)
You can’t beat getting an Gibson les paul standard. Great video!
That is one gorgeous guitar. There's some quilting there as well. You picked up a winner!
