Windows 10 laptop screen stuck extremely dim, brightness control ignored

- Today i was looking at a laptop with the following symptoms
*Display Logo on startup fine
*Once in Windows screen would be so dim you can't see anything unless you shine a torch on it
*Would display on an external monitor fine
*Hotkeys would work except brightness adjustment
This was my solution to the Problem

Used to open ipad and remove glued back covers on phones

When using the heat gun near sensitive parts, its best to cover them
With this to protect them

This looks soooooo much like the problem we're having now. But the solution does not seem to be working for us. And unfortunately we don't have a secondary monitor making this easier

Very many thanks Rick. Yhe HDMI lead from laptop to PC enabled me to change the brightness settings - that had gone wrong when I connected an external hard drive.

Under 10% the screen just turns pitchblack.
I find that a useful thing actually, Being able to fully dim the screen
I only have one option on the monitor if I click it can u suggest something.. I did the same thing but didn't works

Hello! This can’t seem to fix my issue. My screen is just dim even if brightness is already at max. Weird thing is it would go back to normal when I change to another window and the dim again. Any tips? Laptop is asus - vivobook
hello, i too have a asus vivobook 15 and i am too facing this issue. i had opend the laptop a little violently and the monitor part of the laptop started vibrating or sort of shaking for a moment. then my laptop's screen just went dim. I dont think the device is durable because this is the second time this is happening .
the last time i had to get it fixed in the local device shop. please do let me know if you have fixed this problem on your laptop and how did you fix it

Yo you helped me fix my problem! Wasn't the same exact fix, I had disabled my monitor for a separate video game fix xD re enabled it and now it works!

Ok uhm, if anyone is seeing this and who could help me, pls respond fast. I was adjusting my brightness using a key which is dedicated to brightness (F5 for lower and F6 for higher). I accidentally held F5 for too long and now the brightness is at 0. Unfortunately, F6 doesn't work for some reason so it is stuck at 0. Any solutions?

@@rickstechrepairs nah its fine m8, i held a flashlight on my screen for the past half an hr trying to navigate through the dim screen. I eventually got it.

@@abdelkhaleksalama118 i got a flashlight and put it VERY close to my screen. Make sure its a bright one so you can see the section where you can increase the brightness.

I'm a bit confused Rick. On my Windows 10 laptop, I have exactly this problem but my Settings screen looks different to yours and I can't see Device Manager, therefore can't attampt this fix. Can you suggest why that is? I can see a section in settings labelled Devices, but Monitors isn't listed. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
in device manager, under view, is there a show all option

Im having a acer windows 10 and my display is very dim even though my brightness is 100 it is adjustable. I can but hardly see the screen please help

I have it on generic plug and play monitor and still have this issue. I adjusted it and still have mid brightness.
edit: I fixed this just a few moments later. I had to uncheck the useless change brightness automatically when lighting changes setting. Whats the dealio with that I ask you? The most unhelpful setting I have ever seen which does absolutely nothing and needs to be removed. Why?

i turned on my flash light and put it very close to my screen and yk tried rto get the mouse in frame, then i navigated to search bar and typed brightness then used the scrolling thing (all this with my flash pointed at screen and my eyes 1inch away) i think thats the only way to do it unless you can screen cast to your tv using the cord thing@@Samureai

If you don't see Generic PnP listed, be sure SHOW HIDDEN DEVICES is ON in view dropdown....then follow directions in video. Solved for me after MANY hours of research and watching other videos. Thanks, Rick.

Had the same issue with my monitor, but the issue had nothing to do with drivers.
For me worked: shutting down my pc, unplugging both my pc and the monitor, and plugging those again. Monitor came back to normal state after that

Sadly my monitor driver is already update so it doesn't work
oh I found the update the intel monitor graphic driver from DriverEasy then downloaded it here and it simply just worked thank you very much

I am using dell, after giving a warning beep sound the screen turned very dim, i can seen the screen only with torch light. I will try this method to see if it will work

Mine is all set for Generic PNP monitors, when I went to update that was the only option to pick and reloaded it but nothing happened so this isn't the solutions for me.
try uninstalling the display device, restart the pc and see what happens

Had this problem recently.
Incase these tips doesn't help you, power off the laptop, unpug the battery, try detaching the monitor and re-attach it back. Seems these monitor forget to wake up at times.

bro the side of my laptop popped off and when i put it back in the screen was hard to see and it was barely visible i dont have an external screen i dont know what to do my parents are going to kill me
i would check the video connector on the back of the screens
Disconnect then reconnect with the power off

@@rickstechrepairs I think I'm going to just buy a cheap monitor, back everything up to another drive and then just scrap the laptop. It's over 10jyears old and not my primary PC so it's not really a loss

I turned on my phone flashlight and I can see enough to be able to navigate around. Fix your BIOS or update drivers. All I know this is a software issue.

Display logo on mine is very dim as well at the start even the start up menu where you choose the operating system to start with.

I'm using a samsung R540
i would be inclined to think you have had a failed backlight on your lcd panel but it also could be a failed backlight driver on the mainboard

I have to laugh because although this video helped me, our computer wasn't broken and didn't need to update anything. 🤣
My not so tech savvy Mom had turned her brightness all the way down and you couldn't even see the screen during the day.
We thought it was broken/needed drivers/backlight went out, etc
It sat for months of her not being able to use it, because I was too busy to look into it further.
.... I didn't know there was a tiny button for the brightness. 🤦♀️
