Screen dimming issues, brightness changes automatically on a Windows 10 laptop: the only solution

- You need to change the values for the registry keys ACUserPreferencePolicy and DCUserPreferencePolicy to zero (0). The path is: Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4d36e968-e325-11ce-bfc1-08002be10318}\0000
Don't forget to write down the original values for these registry keys in a safe place in case something goes wrong.
I am shoes maker from Bangladesh. So while I am working for my English lords designing new slippers I often have deal with the same on my laptop. U saved me from unemployment!!!
Edike amar o same issue hocche but uni video te jemon dekhalo amar laptop e age thekei emon chilo try korlam but same as before.
Who could of guessed this was that difficult to deal with. We have to adjust the brightness in the registry!! Whaaat??? I wish I had a macbook, but you did save my life!!!
Yeah…this irritates a lot when ur watching an anime and you see the brightness going basically up and down. Thanks for the help!
Got an Asus laptop a few days ago on my birthday and bumped into the same issue. I haven't been able to figure out how to fix it for all this time!! I even had to reinstall my win10...nothing worked tho. But you dude really helped me out. Many thanks!
Thanks brother. You saved my eyes from this unbearable irritation which the guys at the service centre could not!
At a service center, they told me that my laptop required a display replacement, which wasn't a warranty case. The price was so huge that I couldn't afford to spend some extra money on this. But your method worked, thanks.
LOL
his method didnt work but the one which he told was intel graphics manager , here i disabled display saver and worked thnks bro
I do not have ACUser PreferencePolicy nor DCUserPreference in that folder either, although I DO have a laptop and am (was) experiencing the dimming issue (I experienced even some color changes - sometimes the colors were warmer, sometimes colder). I tried all the methods Anatoliy Kaufman described in this video even before I have found this video on youtube, but with the same result - there are no such options to turn it off in Display or Power Management settings or Graphics card settings (I also had enhancement and HDR turned off).
I have two graphics cards in my laptop. AMD Radeon integrated graphics (not using, disabled in BIOS) and NVIDIA Geforce RTX 3060.
I was experimenting with different settings for a while. Once I turned on the hybrid mode, which means that the laptop uses both graphics cards depending on what I am doing, I noticed that when using the integrated graphics there is no dimming, but with NVIDIA the brightness/contrast goes mad all the time. I do not want to use the integrated graphics card, but since then I was pretty sure that my display was not broken and that it was some kind of Windows-NVIDIA driver relationship thing (more likely Windows power saving thing forcing the driver to do these things). I disabled the integrated graphics card again, using NVIDIA only.
I wanted to update the graphics card driver, but Windows 10 said it is actual and there is nothing better than this. I even uninstalled the display, after restarting it was installed again and it did not solve the problem. Windows installed the same driver again, dimming did not stop. So I went to NVIDIA web page, downloaded the original NVIDIA driver for my laptop graphics, installed it by launching the .exe file and the problem was solved. The dimming stopped, my display is bright again, does not change brightness/contrast/color (I even had to reduce its brightness manually, which was unimaginable before).
So maybe it will help to somebody else, who tried everything and did not solve the problem. Downloading up to date driver from graphics card original web page might be better than the driver installed by Windows. It took me 2 months to solve this annoying thing!
change the value to 0
DefaultResPolicy
i have checked my laptop for these settings in registry, those are already set to 0. but i'm still observing the screen dimming issue. any further suggestions plz ?
exactly what i'm looking for, thanks for your video, appreciate a lot !!!
Thankyou so much brother, intel command center was the problem in my laptop....
Life saver. I hope good fortune follows you brother
I just bought an Alienware laptop with Windows 10 with this dimming issue. I tried this fix and it only worked once. I had the same problem the next day when I restarted the computer. However, when I use my VLC media player, the dimming issue goes away. It only works with VLC but not Windows Media player. So now, I just put on VLC and minimize it. Not the best solution, but it works.
This is funny, you just said in this video that many other say to switch things on and off that you dont have on your laptop. In this case my laptop does not have what you are showing us to change i don't have DC or AC userpreference policy. Do i have to do this while unplugged?
Thank you dawg, youre the best, really thanks you, why is this even a option? Everyone hates auto brigthness, thanks you for this video
thanks for ruling out but still mentioning the other ways. sadly, for me it's a desktop pc and a new TV who swore to each other that this feature is a thing now and neither wants to obey my non-dimming wishes. up until the AC... in the path I could keep up with your way, but neither this nor the alternate 0001 folder could be found for me. wanted to say thanks to your descriptions though
yooo it really works appreciate you bro.
Bro i tryd it and it was already set on 0
Both of them and i still have the same issue
Any other ideas?
Thank you
It's so helpful
I do not have ACUser PreferencePolicy nor DCUserPreference in that folder, can you please help me to solve this issue
all the things you discribed also did not work for me. but "ACUser PreferencePolicy" and "DCUserPreference" are not in that folder for me. what can i do?
Don't worry bro, I tried rolling back my NVIDIA drivers and it didn't fix anything. I think it's an inbuilt feature in windows now lol
@@mudzy9820 noo wtf?! do i have to update to win11 now??
ALTERNATIVE SOLUTION:
Hit the Windows key and the R keys at the same time, then type services.msc
Look for "Display Enhancement Service"
Right click, select "Stop"
Then Double click and in "Startup type" select "Disabled"
Restart the computer
It also not works bro 😢😢
This happens on my desktop with the second monitor i cannot find AC and DC policies.
i dont have an ACUserPreferencePolicy and DCUserPreferencePolicy
nevermind it was just my uncle who unplugged my laptop its all ok
I don't have a or DC user preference in that location
I did by your step but still dims
Any idea what to do if I don't have those settings in my registry?
Then you probably have a desktop, and not a laptop.
@@denis436Yes, it makes sense now. I see the ac/dc part of the registry name, meaning it's a battery related setting. I appreciate your response and your video. Apologies for my frustration. Turns out it was Msi Afterburner causing the dimming issue for me. Thank you again. Have a great day!
Very thanks
Yeah it's pretty funny all of the stuff that didn't work for you I've gotten all the way up to your registry part and now I can't find those settings.
Update after completely resetting Windows to factory settings this worked. No more Auto damn I'm guessing something was done in the registry following along with one of the videos I saw.
Doesn't work for me
FOUND SOLUTION WINDOWS 11 , CAN'T BELIEVE NO ONE IS SHOWING THIS SIMPLE FIX OMG.
Go to Settings, System, then click on the brightness option, it should have a small arrow indicating there are more options. This should expand it to 1 option saying "Change brightness based on content". Mine was set to "On Battery Only" but turn it off. AND IT SOLVES IT.
Thanks it worked
They are under 0001 for me, not 0000, and the values are already set to 0
did you find a solution yet?
Damn work laptop wont allow me change it. TO many security stuff at work
Thanks Bro!!
Don't have ACUser PreferencePolicy nor DCUserPreference Policy setting in the folder. Any suggestions ?
I think all laptops have them - it's in the system. First, make sure you've navigated the correct path in the registry editor. Also, maybe your power plans are messed up. Try to create a High Performance power plan if you can do it. In my case, I can't. If you can't too or if after creating a High Performance power plan AC and DCUserPreferencePolicy don't show up, just create these two registry keys in the folder I mentioned, name them ACUserPreferencePolicy and DCUserPreferencePolicy and assign them a value of a single zero (0). If this doesn't help, I would recomment you to reinstall your Windows 10 - after this they should appear in the folder.
@@denis436 I own a PC not a laptop. I should have mentioned it
@@wojciechpiat5832 In this case, you should not experience this problem since it's usually only possible on laptops. PCs, of course, don't have these registry keys and they are not meant to have them, but have you tried reinstalling your Windows?
@@wojciechpiat5832 There may also be something wrong with your monitor, try using your friend's or your family member's monitor to check if the issue persists.
@@wojciechpiat5832 i also have same problem with my pc and its asus monitor. I am not sure but changing the display preset from standard to srgb seems to fix it for now. The standard mode had energy star logo next to it. Could have been trying to adapt to save save power.
same too me man tnx
No change time waste
