  • I am not a fan of CVT's but I have to come to terms with the fact that they do promote better fuel economy. Somehow these transmissions perform better with high torque engines. The Honda CR-V Turbo is one of these - see how it performs on our favourite test route.

    Hi YS Khong, I'm driving CRV 1.5 Turbo 2WD..I would like to share my experiences, this car deliver good power, spacious and pretty good on hill climb. Sometimes i bring my family and drive all the way up to Genting Highland and i don't feel power-less. However, the CVT is loud and not smooth compare with CX5 and X70...Overall, 1.5cc + turbo i would say nothing much to complain..

    Hi Mr. Khong,
    I'm one of your viewer that was waiting for your Genting drive in this SUV. No doubt about the turbo-charged 1.5 performance and the CVT on climbing the hill. The CVT will make sure we are always in the right ratio for smooth and efficient driving.
    However, my concern is about the delay on the accelerator when we try to accelerate hard from slow moving traffic (for example during overtaking from 40 km/h to 110 km/h). The delay is between the accelerator press action and the SUV acceleration itself. I know, normal CVT car, when we press the accelerator, the RPM will jump (not so much delay between the accelerator press and the RPM jump) BUT there is a terrible delay between the accelerator press and the car/SUV's acceleration itself. It makes the car/SUV revving but with a delayed acceleration. This will make overtaking in a CVT car quite dangerous.
    In the video, I focused on your right leg movement and the engine sound. I noticed that there is no delay on that but I still feel that there is delay between your right leg movement and the acceleration itself. What is your opinion regarding this? To be honest, I own a CVT car and I hate the mid-speed acceleration (e.g. 40 km/h to 110 km/h) performance. This made me hate any CVT car and made me consider SUV with a traditional gearbox. Under RM200,000 limit, I am stucked with Mazda CX-5 (and of course Proton X70 (6-speed auto), KIA's and Hyundai's SUV but I'm no longer their fan).

    • @YSKhongDriving
      @YSKhongDriving  5 лет назад +15

      Hi Wang Mat - The turbo has a little lag, and so does the transmission - this is for protection of the transmission, but I found the best way to overcome it is to use the paddle shifters. What I do is shift down before I accelerate, and also time my acceleration. The CVT contributes to better fuel economy, but we have to learn to live with it. We drive many cars in our lives, and each one is different, and we try to find the best way to handle the diversity. I am not a lover of CVT myself, but I do own a CVT vehicle and I have learned to live with it. Of course there are other choices, so I believe it is up to the car maker to make a car that suits us, or else we go choose another make of car.
      However, we cannot get what we want all the time, so then we learn to compromise. I preferred another model, but we needed a 7 seater, and so I had to compromise, because I couldn't afford a more expensive 7- seater.

      @@YSKhongDriving This is what I expected to hear from you, kind sir. Paddle shifter. Most of Malaysian owners (lowyat.net, their FB page etc.) said that there is no need for paddle shifter. Even forums from oversea doesn't appreciate the paddle shifter except for a British guy (forgot the forum). Clearly, this is the best channel for car reviews. I didn't have chance to use the paddle shifter last time I test drive the car. Will do that later. Appreciate your feedback.

After this video I placed the sound recorder on the window glass or front screen and the knocking noises stopped, and the transmission and engine sounds went quieter. Honda has to do something with this... its their flagship model... overall... after test drive the CX5 2.5GLS, X70 1.8GTD-i Premium, Subaru VX 2.0P and the Kia Sportage 2.0D AWD GT line... we finally brought the CR-V 1.5TC-P 2WD with Honda Sensing... yes, no doubt about the NVH... but when comes to comfort... its the best among its rivals... class leading interior space, better tech such as Apple Carplay and Android auto connect, adaptive cruise ctrl with low speed follow... Just take good care of the passenger side exterior mirrors where houses the Lane Watch Camera... expensive to replace... huhuhu

      To be honest, SUVs will never be as quiet, as vibration-free, and never less harsh than a car. Especially so in lighter weight, smaller SUVs because they are made with tougher tyres which make more noise and give a rougher ride.

    • @YSKhongDriving
      @YSKhongDriving  2 года назад +2

      Each car maker tunes its vehicles with certain set objectives in mind, and it seems the CRV is made for a more comfortable setting. Mazda has a ZoomZoom philosophy wherein they try to have a bit of sporty characteristics.
      As for improvements, there is not much you can do, as there are not many tuning parts for the CRV. The best bet is to get a bigger stabilizer bar at the front.

    I tested the late 2018 CRV (1.5 turbo 2WD) model and noted the suspension was a bit hard when hitting uneven road surfaces or small pot holes, i.e. suspension dampening was not very good, which I did not find an issue in say the CX-5 or even X70. I was rather surprised to find this in a car of this level. Did you feel this ? (Otherwise, I like the car for its practicality and power.)

    • @YSKhongDriving

      Each manufacturer sets their own standards for the ride and shock absorption: generally the CR-V is also set up for comfort, and differences, if any, would be quite marginal.

    • @YSKhongDriving
      @YSKhongDriving  5 лет назад +11

      I agree, but only for drivers with the necessary skills. Normally more than one person drives a vehicle, especially a vehicle like this. If I were to have one, I would want my family members to be that much safer if they drive. My son's probably could do without, but I do have others who are not so expert at driving. I am sure there are others too, who want that extra feature. Also, adaptive cruise control is pretty nice to have as you can use it to your advantage in some situations. Electronic aids should be used as aids only, but sometimes it is useful to have them there, even the very irritating lane change warning serves to remind you to use your signals and in doing so also helps to remind you to use your mirrors, as an instinctive thing to do.

They are saying it is not needed. But, I totally agree with you; the system can be useful to us BUT we cannot 100% depends on them. A good driver (clearly you are very good) will know when can we use the system and when we cannot. Its a bonus that we can appreciate if we are not whining about the extra cost.

    Not bad, though there is a bit of transmission whine when you floor it, but luckily it subsides when you reduce throttle. Just curious, cos I've never driven a CVT downhill before, when you brake for corners, do you get the sensation of downshift or does it do this gradually, since it has infinite ratios? Do you need to use paddles to get a lower gear, or its smart enough to figure it out the best "gear"/ratio to give for the situation?

    • @YSKhongDriving
      @YSKhongDriving  5 лет назад +2

      Hmmm, I cannot notice it shifting down, but I am sure it does. I used the paddle shifters to shift down and it does shift down when I do that. I think if you don't, then it would go onto the highest gear, so it is better to use the paddles if you want to go fast, for better control of the gears.

      Hi Teoh, when it comes to SUV, I would prefer it to be with AWD. That is because with AWD the vehicle would be safer, especially in the wet. It is a preference; in dry conditions, 2 WD would be just as good, but even then, cornering limits would still be higher with AWD.
      Admittedly, AWD means slightly more fuel consumption, but I feel it is worth it. Not sure what you mean by problems, but maintenance costs would be expected to be a little higher.
      It's the same when you opt for more options in any vehicle: there will be more things to maintain: like air conditioning, for instance - but then, we all know that we cannot exist without it, literally, hahaha. AC also needs maintenance and replacement and they do break down too, but you get the point, right? It's because we need it. So why do I like AWD? It's also because I believe we need it - only that some do not realize just how good it can be, and how it could make the difference in a road situation when you are about to fly off the road.

      @YSKhongDriving  4 года назад +1

      The CR- V turbo version has a bit more horsepower overall, but the Tiguan has a DSG, which is môre fun. In terms of space the CR-V probably is a bit bigger. It finally comes down to brand preference.

    Hi can I know whether is it normal that a new car market value drop the next year.. For example.. 2019 CRV TC-P now dropped to RM30-35k... Need some clarification.. Whats the factor for drop in car market value?

    • @YSKhongDriving
      @YSKhongDriving  4 года назад +1

      Would you pay the same price as a new car after it has been used for a year? If not how much would you pay? Would you pay new price minus 10k? No? 20k? If not how about 30k? That is how used car value is determined- willing buyer.
      So if you are old enough, you will remember the first Satria was selling for a higher price even after 1 year.

    This or the cx5 2.5 or diesel, in your professional opinion based on ride and handling?

    • @YSKhongDriving
      @YSKhongDriving  5 лет назад +6

      I have driven all, but not the diesel on this hill. All are good to drive, but each maker dials in different settings according to their design objectives. For the CR- V, the designers probably wanted more comfort, so it would be a more softer. Mazda believes in their Zoom-Zoom philosophy and Jinba-Ittai of horse and rider being one, so have built a car with less roll and also they have GVC to cancel out the roll effect. Sporty types may prefer the Mazda, while those who want an overall softer ride may go for the CR-V. But on the whole, the difference is very small, and most people may not even notice any difference between the two.
