These studio amps have hands down one of the best power scaling I've ever used, and I'm an amp tech so I've played a lot of them. I have a Silver Jubilee model and there's hardly any difference between the 20 & 5W beyond the volume. Usually amps loosen up and have more sag at the lower settings, and you lose some top and bottom end. I played the Plexi version and was surprised how close it got to actually sounding like a Super lead through a 4x12. Beyond the amp itself, the 4X12 creates some phase cancellation that plays a noticeable part of that sound, and it's the one thing that smaller clones can't do. I don't know what's going on with Studio, but it has some of that character even though you're running into a 10" on the combo, or typically 1X12 with the heads.
@@mr.d.572 it's pretty much what it sounds like, a sort of a looser spongy compression. Was not what I was expecting you to play through the JTM Shane! Very late Dire Straits feel there (On Every Street). Although it seemed to really shine with the single coil strat. I got to admit, the JTM and matching cabinet look cool AF and sounds just as good 🤘 My eyes are watering from the retail price on them though 😂🤣 I'm a bit surprised with the speaker choice of creambacks. I would have thought they'd go more vintage with greenbacks? Not that they sound bad by any means. With the creambacks rated at 65Wea, even a single greenback is 25W and two would give it 50W handling - more than enough for the 20W head.
That's what I keep thinking, despite the Tonemaster, Fractal Audio, Kemper, modellers, various brands keep making valve/tube amps ..and people keep buying them
$1749? That's a lot of nice steaks man. I'd put my JOYO British Sound and a Moorer Baby Bomb 30 in a blindfolded tone challenge with it any day. Over-priced POS and a waste of money IMHO. Great review as usual though Shane.
Very Cool, Thankyou. Awesome Looking and Sounding Amp. So many features. I have a Marshall MG15MSii Mini Stack Amp which is amazing and I love it, but always want a Marshall Tube Amp, this could be it. Thankyou for the comprehensive honest review. Cheers
This amp is literally a chinese made circuit board amp, "assembled in the UK". And I use that term loosely. Just like that Gibson Falcon with chinese circuit boards. When they say "hand wired", it literally means plugging in connectors, bolting in a speaker, and ship. Even Fender does it, but at least they're honest about it
As great as these new JTM's sound you have to also give credit to the M65 creambacks. Every demo I've seen so far has the matching 2x12 cabinet with them. I was pleasantly surprised that they went with them. I figured they'd go with greenbacks since this is just a 20 watt head. The M65 has become my favorite Celestion speaker. I use it for everything including metal. It cleans up nice and chugs like a V30 without the annoying upper mid spike.
It 's been one year and I am watching it again. My impression ( as of summer 2024) is that this iteration of Marshall JTM sounds at times better, than my hand wired custom made copy of Marshall Plexi ( based on schematic by late Tim Krueger/Rambla FX-) . It seems that there is one more amp I need to buy. And i thought that this "amp race" is over... Apparently not yet :-)
Great review !! As usual. I bought the combo has creamback 12 I have a 2x12 with creamback and a low end speaker. Want to move JTM cream from combo to this 2x12. For variety what’s another 12” that I could put in the JTM combo that you think would be different but a good match??? TIA
Man, it seems to break up extremely early. I never heard it get totally clean even when in 20 watt mode. I actually have the combo on order from GC. The amp is on sale for $1500 right now and I thought a British made jtm 20 watt combo for that price just doesn't happen very often. Im not a huge fan of the distorted sound of this amp however. I have heard some videos where it sounds incredible, and some where it doesn't? Is this amp confused? I really wanted it for mostly clean tones that I can add pedals to. If I'm going for Marshall crunch then im going for something other than this amp. Might cancel my order and just get tge dsl 40cr instead? I know exactly what that amp sounds like, and it sounds good!
G’day Simon, Dr Ric here. I had the privilege of playing through this incredible amp after this video was shot. There’s a fair amount of clean-ish headroom on the full power (20 watt) setting…probably somewhere between a Fender Princeton and a Deluxe Reverb. I don’t think we’ll see any funk guitarists using it…but for blues/classic rock, it’s completely brilliant!
So cool how they can fit $3,000 into such a small package these days.🙄 *if I sound salty, its because I'm thinking about buying it and the 20 year old me in my head... he doesn't respect me.
Wow what a (as always) great demo i am so tempted by this amphead/combo set up for live work, still not sure which to choose like the idea of the combo as easy to carry but love a 2x12 hmmmm . I'll see which i can get cheapest i guess. Thanks again for the great demo and thank Dr Ric for his demo too
These pocket Marshalls are pretty neat, but how come they get all the unique tolex options while the big boys are still only available in black/gold? I'd kill for a full size JTM in the original black and white tolex. Or the all white from the SC. What's the deal Marshall? Why are the flagships being left in the dust?
sounds pretty much voiced for a strat, not too bright, solid grunt in the lower register, good vid searching for a less bulky package than my JCM800 half stack. oB
I don't get why an extension cab being built in the UK or US rather than Mexico or China makes any sort of difference. With Amps/Heads/combos I understand why it matters but with cabs we are literally talking about a box buit from Birch plywood and a couple of speakers .orange cabs are built in Vietnam and those things are built like tanks.
Ok first of all…WOW! I love that you used two different guitars carrying out different duties! That tonal separation hit nicely! Your Strat clean was so seriously amazing! That has to be one of the absolute best cleans I have ever heard!
I have a 2009 JTM45 reissue, I run it through a captor X into a 1960ax cab, and It's probably my favourite of all the amps I own. I must say, even though pretty much all my pedals sound great into the front of it, I am a little envious of the effect loop on the studio version. It looks killer too, I'm glad they went with the early aesthetics rather than taking the lazy route and making it look the same as the SV20.
Thank you, Scott. I have the Kiesel video in editing right now. I have to agree it's a beast of a guitar! Thanks so much mate. This amp was a lot of fun. It covers so much ground musically.
Beat demo yet I’ve seen today and really shows the variety of tones but also shows the classic sounds - capturing some Allman bros, Clapton and Greeny.
Channel jumping is the way to go on this amp. What an 'eye-catchy' piece of old school amp with some new 'smarts' technology. The sounds are great, particularly with single-coils strat. Good review. And how lucky are you getting to test all this good gear! 😀👌
Shane. I have watched so many reviews on this head and matching Cab and I have to say up to watching this I was flipping back and forth every 5 minutes in my choice between this and the other studio head they have (the Plexi style one) But this review has made my mind up now. Thank you for such a cool review Way too many others don’t do enough review with good solid rhythm parts to get a real feel for the tone. Keep up your amazing clips and fantastic playing Mal- in Ireland.
This thing is simply killer and you did a great demo as usual Shane. I'm really glad that Marshall sent you this amp. I love the look and the sound of this amp.
If every RUclipsr got one, there would be thousands of channels posting videos. Instead, they just went to a handful of channels they knew would make quality videos. It's called marketing, it's not that complicated. Every niche and industry does the same thing on here and has done for 10+ years.
I feel every tone on every guitar demoed was really great, but I was totally enamored with the first part of the Strat demo (clean/edge of break up, neck pickup I think) and ALL of the Tele demo-that killed!! Shane - you are a top-of-the-line demo guy and a monster player. And congratulations on personally being chosen by Marshall to be part of this new gear demo. Cheers, man!! (New Hampshire USA)
I don't wanna be the bearer of bad news but this is just another great marketing move by Marshall. The amp claims to be the place where everything began, but if you look inside, it's kind of a DSL 40 circuit. It even has the same black back look from the DSL series. Another thing that seems odd to me is a 20w amplifier equipped with a 65w creamback. A greenback would've been much more sensible for me, unless Marshall had tons of creambacks in stock and having the need of getting rid of them. Anyway, on the outside they look gorgeous and they do sound good (at least for what I hear on the demos), but they are very far from what they claim to be. Cheers!
I don't doubt that this is a great amp. HOWEVER, Marshal has given me ZERO reasons to get one. I might as well buy one of their older amps used. Having a switch to go from 20W to 5W, FX loop and a DI output just isn't enough features on a studio amp today. The competition is KILLING Marshall with all the features they offer. Just having "the classic Marshall tone" and an amp that cleans up with the volume knob just isn't as strong of a selling point as Marshall seem to believe.
Thanks for the support! 🎸
Thank you, Marshall! This thing rocks. (not surprising). Thanks for having me on board! 😃

*if I sound salty, its because I'm thinking about buying it and the 20 year old me in my head... he doesn't respect me.
Made in the UK with asian boards and components. My DSL 40 cr made in Vietnam with asian boards and components. Same crap just not as expensive.
What’s the difference between this and the Marshall Studio Vintage 20 Head (SV20H)?
What a guitar amp should be. I’m really considering this set up for my Grandson.
Nice review as always…and finally the Studio series in a combo with a 12” speaker…
Ok first of all…WOW!
I love that you used two different guitars carrying out different duties! That tonal separation hit nicely! Your Strat clean was so seriously amazing! That has to be one of the absolute best cleans I have ever heard!
It sounds great! Perhaps a bit more than what I need for home use.
Incredible
I can see why Marshall wants you to demo this. I bought a DSL40CR solely because of your video on it.
I don't get the Hype about this Amp. In all the demos i've heard it sounds very average to me
it's good but Imma keep my vintage modern 2266 :)
black controls makes no sense, but the rest - great and nice playing!
The semi cleans were great... effects loop won't hurt either...
4ohms are gd (if you can play 100db+ these days) nice sounding amp but.👍
Yes definitely one of the best Strat tones. All around a great amp and cab.
Let me just say you got a subscribe from a Lefty the moment i saw it. Great work, amazing amp and continue to make content
Umm, feel free to drop it off at my house I'll take good care of it for you.😅
Yes the Strat sounds incredible though it !!! 😎👌
It sounds great but I wonder how much of that is the effect of volume. Even at 5 watt setting, that still must be very loud.
Damn it Shane!!! I want that amp!!! Also, that Kiesel is gorgeous!!!!! Awesome vid!!!!
Thank you, Scott. I have the Kiesel video in editing right now. I have to agree it's a beast of a guitar! Thanks so much mate. This amp was a lot of fun. It covers so much ground musically.
Almost sounded like Brian Eno 'Here Come The Warm Jets' at the beginning there
Ah! I'll have to check that out I don't know that one. :)
Shane. I have watched so many reviews on this head and matching Cab and I have to say up to watching this I was flipping back and forth every 5 minutes in my choice between this and the other studio head they have (the Plexi style one)
But this review has made my mind up now. Thank you for such a cool review Way too many others don’t do enough review with good solid rhythm parts to get a real feel for the tone.
Keep up your amazing clips and fantastic playing
Mal- in Ireland.
Thanks for the kind words Mal, I am glad it's helpful mate. Thanks again.
This thing is simply killer and you did a great demo as usual Shane. I'm really glad that Marshall sent you this amp. I love the look and the sound of this amp.
Thanks for the kind words mate. I put a lot of work into my videos (and this one in particular to showcase what it can do). Cheers :)
Great review. Amazing amp!
Nick! I hope you're doing well mate! Many thanks for the kind words.
Hey Nicko, LONG time no hear from dude!
@@DMSProduktions hey man! I’ve is good just busy! Hope all is well with you mate!
@@NickintheStates Yeah, been thru a few ups'n'downs the past few years with several bereavements etc!
Sounds bonkers good 🇬🇧🇬🇧 what a tone !! Glad your showing off the best of British mate …. Top demo as always 💪
Thanks mate! Many thanks. This video was a lot of fun to make. The amp sounds huge in the room :)
I don't understand..every guitar youtubers get these for free? Just to show case them?
If every RUclipsr got one, there would be thousands of channels posting videos. Instead, they just went to a handful of channels they knew would make quality videos. It's called marketing, it's not that complicated. Every niche and industry does the same thing on here and has done for 10+ years.
Oh man that is so sweet playing
You Sir have just sold one of these… fantastic review, thank you.
You're going to love it Mark! Rock on mate :)
Thanks for the kind words mate! Rock on :)
Sounds bonkers good 🇬🇧🇬🇧 what a tone !! Glad your showing off the best of British mate …. Top demo as always 💪
Caw blimey Guv'nah!
What's that in the loop?
Great tones!
Companies must love how you incorporate recently-reviewed gear into other gear review videos. (Tarus pedal)
Cheers! I actually shot this video before the Taurus pedal review. The pedal felt like a great accompaniment for an amp like this :)
Great sounding amp. Definitely made for Stratocasters.
Thanks, Jim. The Strat tone is something special with this one.
Opening Jam sounded great. Amazing for a "clean" signal.
Cheers mate!
Just got the combo to replace my orange AD30. It’s incredible 👌🏻👌🏻
What happened to the orange??
It’s currently not functioning on Chanel 1. Is super weak. There’s no one local that does amp repair. I need to send it off really
Wow, what an amp and cab! If I didn't already have a Studio Vintage 20H, I might get one of these! Great demo, Shane.
It's a monster of an amp! Thanks for the comments :)
Excellent demo and review Shane ... sounds fantastic !!!
Thanks, Todd! I hope you're well.
Wow, this sounds really good! Great demo.
Thanks!
Cheers!
This is some of your best playing yet imo, love the tones from this thing
This maybe a stupid question but why would the FX loop need an on/off switch?
A lot of amps allow you to switch it on and off so you don't have to keep clicking on your pedals.
@@intheblues Ok. That makes sense. Thanks! Damn I want one of these amps
Thanks for providing the Freedom Units conversion on the weights.
That amps sounds great and looks killer. I love the old school look.
'Freedom units'?
They look very cool, but unfortunately the US price seems a bit more than the UK price, so I will be sticking to my Dr. Z and 65 Amps.
Wow... cool amp... back to the roots...
What Patch Cable are u using ?
