    Love it!! That was sick AF! This is making my already present SV20H GAS go off the charts. I'm already 9 tube amps deep, got a rack full of tube preamps, got a FM3 that gives me just about anything I want BUT a recent video sparked a SV20H fever in me that I can't shake. I sold off my Marshalls a decade ago and have a modded '71 YBA-1 that delivers Marshall magic as well as those amps ever did but the bug is eating me alive now that you poured jet fuel on it. 🤣🤣🤣 Great video Brett!

    I'm new to the 1987X and so far I love it, it has the quietest output stage of any Marshall I've owned, as in NO hum!! I added pre-phase inverter MV, nice. But I also run it as an output stage for a modeller, excellent option!

  • @GCKelloch
    @GCKelloch 18 дней назад

    Nice selection of demo tunes, and great playing. Notice the difference in bass response when you switched from the Mic'd cab to the OX box. I imagine that's the massive proximity effect of the R121. The Figure 8 pattern of ribbon mics gives them the strongest proximity effect, 3~4x that of an SM57, and with no low-end roll-off. You'd be getting more than a 12dB boost at 100Hz from it that close to the speaker. The average between the two mics would bring it down a bit, but it's still much stronger. We tend to feel some bass boost sounds natural in demos because it compensates for a bass guitar. No doubt the OX cabs are configured for a flatter response, likely with a bass boost equal to the high-end lift of the mics used.

    • @BrettPapa
      @BrettPapa  18 дней назад +1

      They both sound fantastic. I would like to have something like the Frytte power station in there somewhere in there if I were to use them live because then no matter what way you needed to go volume wise you would be covered and could still get the sound of those amps cranked. To be honest that's really where I like those amps best. All depends on where you are playing and what kind of band you play with. My friend who play guitar with Kenny Chesney plays the SV20 for his stadium gig and it sounds fantastic!

    • @BrettPapa

      They all hold their own. Friedman amps have a little more of a hifi compressed tone and are basically upgrade versions of old Marshall circuits. Great video. The only small amps that can hang with 87x is the jtm imo, at least in cleans and low end. The sv20 sounds good doing the cranked lead thing. That jtm20 sounds amazing. The jubilee ain’t bad, pretty good srv tones but I’d rather have the 100w

    Would any of these pair well with an AC30? I'd love to have a sound somewhere between Clapton and Kossoff. Just that super awesome vintage British rock sound. For my own personal rig I have an AC30 with greenbacks and a Morgan 2x12 for the Morgan AC20 cab with an Alnico and a Creamback and an AC30 head. I'd love to have a Marshall sound to go with that to get that booming low end that I associate with Marshall. Any of these you think would work for that? My cab is 8ohms and would these work with an 8ohm cab? I really thought the Jubilee sounded super sweet.

    • @BrettPapa
      @BrettPapa  17 дней назад

      All the heads have 4, 8, and 16 ohm taps. I would go with a JTM20 most likely to fill in the frequency range a bit since the AC30 will have the midrange covered.

    Brett you still have the iLoud MTMs? Do you play the OX 4x12 punch cab rig out through them? If so, your sound always comes back sounding amazing, but when I use the same setup, either the MTMs are clipping or something else...bottom line I can't get the MTMs to sound good with what I think is a same setup. Do you tweak the 4x12 punch settings? Thanks in advance!

    • @BrettPapa
      @BrettPapa  18 дней назад +1

      Yeah I use the iloud speakers they are fantastic. I don't use them for the sound you hear in the video but just to monitor the sound while I record. I use the 412 punch cab with a 57 and a 160 mic with more on the 57 and use the 160 to fatten things up a bit. Could be the guitars I use or the pickups? Everything matters in the end and also we may just play things differently. Who knows haha tough to say. Just keep tweaking that's how I finally got there.

    I’m a beginner (3years) of all the RUclipss out there proclaiming tubes and cabs are dead and you don’t need it, this comes along! I have tried to get tone I’m craving out of FRFR, PA speakers, various digital muti effects units, just never get there! There is just something about a Marshall tube amp!
    Question, if i was going to sell my un-enthusiastic gear and buy a couple of KEEPER amps and pedals what would be suggestions? I want to play just about everything that Brett has played on this RUclips. Good Ol Rock and Roll! That’s my genre.

    • @BrettPapa
      @BrettPapa  17 дней назад +1

      Yeah I like the amps too! Digital stuff is great though these days and can be great for different situations. All of these amps are great! Volume might be an issue if you can't crank things up a bit in my opinion that's where these amps shine unless you have an OX, Fryette, or Suhr to tame the volume levels. I just plug straight in most of the time with these but if I had a good boost or OD pedal (for me the Barber LTD, Fulldrive, Boss EQ or Rockett Jeff Pedal) and a good reverb and delay pedal and I would be set. Keeley, Strymon, and Line 6 are typically what I use for effects if I use them. The UA pedals are freakin amazing too and that is what I used for some of this demo.

      Thanks for the great suggestions! Thank you for the FANTASTIC example guitar playing and tone! Best RUclips I have seen that makes me want to keep learning and provided massive inspiration! I do have a Boss EQ and a Line 6 Pod Go and a few pedals. I have a pair of Waza Air headphones that have given me my fix for a cranked amp without being run out of town. I am out in the Styx so I can crank it when I get a chance. I bet playing EVH through a 4x12 with those amps and feeling the air and thump was really awesome! I have noticed I like compression. Don’t have a compressor pedal but it’s always on using the Pod Go. Was thinking of getting a Keeley Pro, Empress or a Cali76 to run with my Super Champ X2 or Monoprice 15. Maybe even try stereo! But then again it could be I just like Boost? Frustrating when you don’t know if you’re not using what you have right or you need to shell out more greens on something you may not need! I’m still trying to learn what I want and “need” before plopping down 2 grand for an amp. Got a good 61 vintage II Strat and now I just have to get the proper amp(s), learn good technique, whole songs and how to hook it all up! Sounds easy! Also have your Hendrix Unleashed course, great course! Thanks again!

    • @BrettPapa
      @BrettPapa  18 дней назад

      Depends on the situation. I would say the JTM20 might be more versatile if you had a cover gig and needed to cover a ton of ground but if you are going for that old school Plexi sound the SV is pretty freakin awesome!

    I have a Fryette Power Station too…worth every penny..One of those things you wonder how you lived without it…Okay,gun to your head,you can only keep one,1987X or SV20??…I want a Plexi so bad,I am trying to decide between the Friedman Plex,1987X,or SV20…just wondering your thoughts in the room with the 20 and 50 watt Plexi’s?

    • @BrettPapa
      @BrettPapa  День назад +1

      I have all 3 of them. Plex or SV20 for sure. Dave also mods the SV20 so there is a thought if money is the concern. Plex sounds amazing and either of those would be great. 1987x is a really great amp as well it's just a little more of a one trick pony. Honestly they are all great and if you have a power station and volume isn't a problem any of them would be cool. SV20 is more a standard Plexi sound 1987x has plexi vibes with a lot of gain and the Plex can get you tons of Plexi type sounds with a boatload of gain and options if you want them. It has a lot of gain and I actually use the low input to get where I need to be.

      @@BrettPapa Thanks Brett..that really answered my question,I was really curious if the Plex had that sound of the SV20…The powerstation takes all the volume issues off the table for sure..as much as I like the SV20,seems like the Plex is a really special amp..to have a recreation of a 68 Plexi is really cool…Thank you for the advice!!

    Humbuckers have nothing on Tele's clarity and bite when overdriven in bridge position, or just a bridge single coil in general for that matter. And you especially feel and hear that when playing yourself in person vs listening on youtube which can usually only showcase minor sonic differences omitting the feel difference of all those things.
