my favourite thing about your videos is that you don't look down on new or cheaper stuff just because it's new and/or cheap - you demonstrate how the amps sound, offer some of your opinion but ultimately I feel like most of the time you try to make clear that most of these pieces of gear can work well in a given musical context. There are soooo many snobby dudes that claim only X year vintage plexis are the real deal and only pre-Rola Greenbacks are any good or whatever. Thanks for your super informative videos. I'm getting a SV20H soon probably, and your videos helped me seal the deal.
Probably the best comparison you can find for this amp today. Thank you Johan for all the effort and dedication you always put on your videos! Your channel is a true source of inspiration for me and many others. Cheers from the Swedish east coast!
Fantastically, diverse video, as usual. You manage to cover so many of the possibilities of what these amps can do, with both vintage and modern cabs and speakers. While I don't have access to any vintage equipment, it's great to actually hear how the newer amps compare to those classic sounds that we all love. Thanks, Johan for all your work. These are a genuine pleasure to watch.
A fascinating & expert review of SO MANY Marshall ‘Back Breaker Boxes’, Johan! I really liked the split scenes during your performance segments, that was very imaginative. 👍
Fantastic video, thank you Johan! All of your deep-dive analyses and comparisons are great, but these summary videos are so tremendously valuable for organizing the results
This one is a true gem, so much packed with invaluable information I don't know what to point out first! Everything you need to know when considering the SV20. Have a nice holiday, Johan and thanks a lot for your work!
Thanks for these great comparisons. My cab is a 2x12 open back cab with two Eminence speakers, a GB128 and a Legend 1258. Great combo, and the amp just sings.
Bravo brother. Another great video. Aside from the little differences in the gain stages of these various amps the core Marshall tone is present all through them all. A few different cabs for each setup would definitely even the playing field even more.
Great review brother! I bought my SV20 when it first came out. Good to see hear your thoughts because I consider you a primo Marshall connoisseur! Marshall did the gig here man!
Because the SV20H is so mid heavy, it works just fine with a loud drummer in my opinion. I always keep it dimed, so if you were trying to keep it clean it probably wouldn't work, but for what I use it for its perfect! Especially with a 412. Lately I've been using a Orange 112 with a Celestion 75w Creamback. Love it. Great amp 👌
Thanks, Johan! Love your videos and comparisons. I’ve had a desire for a plexi for some time, but balked because they aren’t very practical. (Same with a Hiwatt DR103) I’ve been using my ‘77 2204 for our band, which is a great amp, but that plexi itch won’t go away! You’re videos and opinion catalyzed me to buy the SV20H with 2x12 stack. Looking forward to running it through its paces! I rehoused the 2204 chassis in a 20” cab, so I’ll be able to neatly use either head with the vertical cab or a 1933 cab. Thanks for all your great videos! I also really enjoyed the 12 combos one. Cheers!
Thank you Johan! I agree with where I think your going with this comparison. There's a certain magic that comes from the 50 and 100 watt Marshall power amp section in the mix, especially during live performance. I wish the SV had this magic but I don't here it. Keep up the great work!
Thanks! I think in most mixes the SV is equal or better but in a power trio there might be an advantage to the natural meat of a bigger power section. Cheers
Great tutorial. I think I actually prefer the sound of the Studio Vintage to the big daddy. I own the Studio Classic and have used it with very loud drummers in a band setting and it was plenty loud with the master not even half way up.
Great summary, thanks Johan! A lot of useful info here, together with great tone and guitar playing. Nice to revisit the Comet and Tele guitars, I like how they sound. Looks like you're on vacation. Hope it's nice!
Thank you Johan, top quality content and top playing as always. I play my SV20 through a Marshall 2061cx 2x12. Try it if you can, with a Strat I get heavenly clean(ish) tones
Nice analysis Johan, thank you! Probably not the first to suggest this to you, but it would be nice to see a thorough comparison of the SV20 to the Origin 20.
Great video! For me, the SV20 does everything expected from a Plexi and without having an original Plexi available for comparison it will be mistaken for a vintage amp. The speakers are probably more important than the amp if one wants to go for a different sound with either of the shown/played amps. I like the Celestion Heritage speakers a lot with a Plexi.
Another great job. The SV did sound like it would work better for recording. Sounded like a studio album should sound. The Super Lead for that live concert sound. Bit warmer and less cut but much better for the big stages. As for the cabs, the SV212 just needs the years of playing your older cabs have under their belt. I think it would have that certain charm in a few years. As for the Jub and DSL, both good but not as open sounding as the non- master volume amps. I favor the superleads. Cheers.
Really good stuff. Most appreciated. I think you have made it really easy for viewers to draw their own conclusions on which amp is best for them. Very well done.
I run mine through a Suhr PT15 2x12 diagonal cab. So the cab is larger physically. One Greenback one v30. With a 100w fryette powerstation adding a little extra resonance for a beefier bottom end. Sounds great! Wish I could get a Johan review 🤩
@@JohanSegebornHi Johan question if I use the the speaker combo green back 30!watt 8ohms and a vintage 30, 8ohms .. will the amp give more balls the the higher wattage speaker?
So, I've finally got one of the SV20Hs. Best amp I've ever played. Traded a Supro Dual-Tone for it. Got it running through a 1960A Lead with the standard G12-75-Ts in and I think I actually prefer that to the other cab I have with V30s in.
I have a Dovetailed Pine cabinet with 2 x JBL G125-8 speakers (200W 102 db). Either the SV20H or the Origin 50 Head sounds glorious with a Gibson 335 or a Yamaha RS502T Revstar with p90's. Thanks for a great informative channel Johan.
Is it like wine? the vintage amps, because of their long time use sound wiser amd fuller? My Fender Twin RI sounds warmer and fuller after 2 years…thank you so much for the wisdom!👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👋🏼🧿
Thanks! When the speakers are broken in after 60 hours it’s actually all downhill I’m afraid. The man leer stuff is built of older usually more imperfect raw material which contributes to a more organic irregular tone
These go for for 800 pounds in the UK... that's 920 USD. A total no-brainer at that price. Meanwhile in the US they sell for $1,750! That's almost double! Absolutely freakin crazy. It's cheaper to fly out to London and pick one up at Andertons and fly home.
Hello Johan, excellent videos as usual. I must thank you because due to your tests I have been able to reach a conclusion when making the decision of the speakers that I ended up carrying in my cabinet. It was unthinkable for me to agree by my own means to carry out a test of this nature. Greetings from Patagonia Argentina!!
Johan I think if Marshall were to make a cab that would actually lay that 212v cab on it's side with a straight cab profile so that it would look like a half stack horizontal instead of vertical it would get rid of the boxiness and add bottom end. Love the SV20H!! Love the channel brother!! Cheers!
The SV20 sounds like someone needs to go through and tweak the various capacitors. It had less high-end and less lows, and sometimes had an obnoxious honk. It would be interesting to go through the schematics vs a plexi to try to find out what changes are leading to the differences in tone.
99 times out of 100,almost no one could tell (or care) the difference, the SV20 looks and sounds amazing and no technical issues compared to amps that are 50+ years old.
As a side note, I can tell you that Tommy Folkesson and I discussed the SV-20 a while ago. We both think it’s a good amp. But it doesn’t have the oomph of the 100W Super Lead. But it is a good amp in its own right. The 100W poweramp has so much more muscles and attack and makes the sound bigger. It even sounds bigger compared with its little brother, the 50W.
Fantastic comparison...I always thought the SV cab was a little too shallow and small to really thump and Plexi style Marshalls need greenbacks...when you stuffed the cab it sounded like it lost some bottom end
Hi. Congratulations on the channel! I would like to ask you a question if possible. in your opinion and have you been able to try it. Which speaker would go best with a 1x12" screen for the Marshall STUDIO VINTAGE SV20h head, what is the ideal combination and would it make the best match? With : 1° Celestion G12M 65 Creamback 1×12" 2° Celestion Vintage30 1x12" 3° Celestion V type 1x12" 4° Celestion Greenback 1x12" 5° Celestion Classic Lead 80 1x12" With what Ohms would be the ideal or best for the speaker with the Marshall SV20h head? With : 1st Speaker 8 Ohms 2nd Speaker 16 Ohms Thank you very much in advance for the information (if it is possible for you to give me your opinion) and sorry for being so bold with the query, I hope I don't bother you. Thank you very much!!Greetings!
Well done again!👍 I’m wondering how the SV would sound if it would be 50 Watts instead of 20 …for example through a Fryette Power Station…? Hm…Guess I’ll try it 😉 Cheers my Friend!Wish You all the best!
I play my SV20 thru a PSII all the time. My two favorite cabs are my 1959HW 4x12 w/G12H30 55Hz Heritage and/or my StoneAge 2x12c w/G12M Heritage (EVH speakers). It's a great combination.
@@a11corn cooool Michael! I also have the 1960 HW Box filled with a quartett of pre Rola 1221s ….can’t wait to test it with the SV …the amp is ordered and supposed to be so in use…cheers for the response 😉😊
I have yet to see you utilize the clipping feature on the mini jubilee, clean channel with clipping engaged is another classic Marshall tone not to be ignored! I have both the 2525h and SV20 with a 2061 cab, probably a better 2x12 option than the current 2x12’s
Just got the Marshall Mini Silver Jubilee 20W ...It has channel switching but the Studio Vintage 20W does not. Also got the Marshall JCM-1H 1 Watt 50th Anniversary Amp....tiny and super cute.
I contend that the V-type speakers are specifically made to be played at bedroom/living room volumes/venues. Never heard them sound good playing with a band. I use my SV20h with a Mojotone Bassman 2x12 of Celestion Gold/G12H30 Anniv. So sick!
The mini Marshall’s have smaller transformers so they sound thinner and less ballsy. Not so important for cleans but a different story for distortion. I would always use H magnets with the 20W amps to compensate for smaller iron.
@@JohanSegeborn No problem. The RK50 Richie Kotzen signature amp is plexi esque worth checking out too. Anyway have a great day and cheers from Chicago.
Great video. I tried a SV20 in a store a week ago, yes it sounds good but even with a humbucker guitar it was super noisy, is this normal? I then tried a SC20 and that was much more manageable noise wise, I thought sounded better than the SV. I haven't had a opportunity to try the 2525 yet, I think from your reviews this is the choice for me but I am hoping to check it's noise level first because if it's like the SV noise wise, I'll pass and stick to my JVM and DSL40 for Marshall sounds. Regards.
I notice how much you like the JBLs, and I totally agree. They sound so dreamy! Thanks for the tip on how best to get them - 70s Twins, I have duly noted that. :) I have a question regarding that riff at 17:00 on the JBLs. You play that often, and I just love it. I'm pretty sure it's Hendrix - am I right? Which song, I'd love to know.
It is amazing how similar they sound micd for the SV20 to the larger amps. I’m sure in the room there’s a big difference given the wattage and transformers. But through the same cabs and micd I can’t tell much of a difference in the video
Thanks for the amazing video series on this amp and this video was a great summary and very well put together! Have you also tried the combo version? I expect the 1x10" V-Type would be kinda boxy, but then it's also quite portable
Johan, do you think running a different flavour of distortion through the effects loop would work? ie Use the pedal as the pre-amp. Loved the comparison The 73 Sounded wicked. Thanks very much for providing a mix with a drummer, I thought it sounded great. I'm loving the Plexi vibe, just sold a 1987x and wished I hadn't:) Also love the SC20H which does something different, wondering if the sc20H can get close to Plexi tones? Peace Love and Good Happiness Stuff:)
it would be great video comparison where two studio series are played together. a blend from boss ce1 just to proof that mini jubilee it’s not only ‘80s but adding highmids creates good sound whit st20 or sv20
its the bayne of mixing, resonsnce reverb rooms and bass drum, really muds up a mix, getting the cabs stuffed and elements tight is where records sound good, thanks j
There is a subtle difference between the amplifiers but the big difference is more in the speakers, different speakers make a big difference. The V-types don't sound bad, perhaps more contained trebles and more pronounced mids, the vintage speakers have brighter trebles and are more reminiscent of the sound of the 70s but I don't think that's why it should be said that the V-types sound bad.
GREAT VIDEO! THANK YOU VERY MUCH. FOR MY PROJECT I WOULD RECORD WITH MY ORIGINAL '74MARSHALL LEAD & BASS JMP50 MODEL NO.1964 AND MY '93MARSHALL SLP1959 MIXED TOGETHER IN VARIOUS COMBINATIONS WITH VARIOUS SPEAKERS AND CABS(1X15, 2X12, 4X12, ETC) OR, WITH ONLY THE 74 AND A 1X15 CAB IF IT WAS N'T POSSIBLE TO BRING ANYTHING ELSE. FOR OTHER "BAND" PROJECTS I WOULD NOT USE BOTH, FOR CONVENIENCE REASONS ONLY. EITHER ONE WOULD BE OK. BUT IN MIKED LIVE OR STUDIO SITUATIONS ON OTHER PROJECTS, THEN THE STUDIO VINTAGE WOULD BE PERFECT FOR ANYTHING AS LONG AS THE SPEAKERS WERE TO MY LIKING. TONEWISE THE ORIGINAL HEADS ARE WAY ABOVE ANYTHING. IT WOULD BE A LIE TO SAY I COULD LIVE WITHOUT ONE. BUT FOR WORKING MUSICIANS IT IS OBVIOUS THAT THE SLP AND THE SV20 PLEXIS ARE ALRIGHT. CONCLUSION: THE SPEAKERS ARE THE KEY TO MAKE THE NEWER MARSHALL HEADS FIT TO MY (SPOILED BY OLD HEAD SOUND) EARS.
Hey Johan ... Have you had a chance yet to get your hands on the JTM Studio (ST20H) ? ..From the reviews ive seen its the best of the 4 studio amps...It would be great to get your opinion on it ?
The super lead has this kind of rounded magic to it that the SV20 just didn't nail for me. But it's extremely close! I think the SV20 shined compared to the 1987X though, a lot more body and a less shrill high end. I know very little about Marshall clean tones, but I thought both sounded nice. The Jubilee has a lot more treble / upper mids I guess. A bit fuller, but maybe a bit more compressed sounding at the same time. What you said about 80s tones is dead on! I've always liked the DSLs, that was much closer than the other amps, despite the price difference. The saddest part of this comparison is that, you need the stack for *the* tone. The big cabinet is just a part of it. Handles 80s riffs perfectly though! Wrote these as I watched the video, I ended up agreeing with Johan on pretty much everything! Thanks as always! Now, a question: How do you normally handle amp settings in these tests? Do you try to match the settings, or adjust by ear instead? I know potentiometer sensitivity doesn't always line up exactly the same.
Hands up EVERYONE who would definitely buy a shirt with “Silver Yoo-bilee” on it! Win or without Johann’s image. I think we are on to something!

Cheers.

3° Celestion V type 1x12"
4° Celestion Greenback 1x12"
5° Celestion Classic Lead 80 1x12"
With what Ohms would be the ideal or best for the speaker with the Marshall SV20h head?
With :
1st Speaker 8 Ohms
2nd Speaker 16 Ohms
Thank you very much in advance for the information (if it is possible for you to give me your opinion) and sorry for being so bold with the query, I hope I don't bother you.
Thank you very much!!Greetings!
Well done again!👍
I’m wondering how the SV would sound if it would be 50 Watts instead of 20 …for example through a Fryette Power Station…?
Hm…Guess I’ll try it 😉
Cheers my Friend!Wish You all the best!
Thanks my friend! Let me know how that sounds!
That’s the “Pull rhythm clip”? I’ve used that one on a couple of videos. I think it tightens up the sound
Just got the Marshall Mini Silver Jubilee 20W ...It has channel switching but the Studio Vintage 20W does not.
Also got the Marshall JCM-1H 1 Watt 50th Anniversary Amp....tiny and super cute.
The studio vintage has 20 and 5 watt modes.
Suddenly now for the first time I like how the Jubilee sounds. So I guess I now need to buy that as well, on top of the 6 Marshalls I already have?
😆 yes!
@@JohanSegeborn 😂
I contend that the V-type speakers are specifically made to be played at bedroom/living room volumes/venues. Never heard them sound good playing with a band. I use my SV20h with a Mojotone Bassman 2x12 of Celestion Gold/G12H30 Anniv. So sick!
Def not its the other way around wtf%@%
Hi Drew! I really liked the V-Types cranked with the Fender Bassbreakers
The sv20 sounds best when the channels are jumped. Just has more character. The ‘71 Super Lead sounds warmer
The mini Marshall’s have smaller transformers so they sound thinner and less ballsy.
Not so important for cleans but a different story for distortion.
I would always use H magnets with the 20W amps to compensate for smaller iron.
Johan, will you do be doing a SC20H series along the lines of your SV20H series?
Would be great to see.
Thanks, Johan.
Wolf
Loved the comparisons between all of them. Can we see you demo some victory amps? If you’re an old school Marshall fan you’d like the Sheriff series.
Thanks! Yeah I’d love to demo one too!
Regards.
Thanks, glad to hear it! My SV20 isn’t noisy at all so maybe there some other problem in the signal chain?
@@JohanSegeborn Thanks for letting me know. I’ll go back and ask to try it again in a different environment.
Let's go !!!!! Thx this is great Johan 🤟🤟🫡🫡🤟
I played a sv20h with a sv112 cab. I would like to your opinion about the sv112 cab. Thanks! Great demo!
Thanks Vince! I’ll keep the SV112 in mind!
Wow! Great comp video!
Many great sounds!!
Thanks Daniel! Glad you like it!
Do a video of this amp running through four 4x12s and how it compares in tone and volume to the 2x12
Oh yes was waiting for this one! :D
Glad to hear it!
Cant wait.👍👍👍👍👍👍
it would be great video comparison where two studio series are played together. a blend from boss ce1 just to proof that mini jubilee it’s not only ‘80s but adding highmids creates good sound whit st20 or sv20
its the bayne of mixing, resonsnce reverb rooms and bass drum, really muds up a mix, getting the cabs stuffed and elements tight is where records sound good, thanks j
I really enjoyed this video
Let's Check it Out!
Johan gives me more gas than a burrito from a sketchy taco truck at 3 am
Nice video,
It would be cool to have the amps played thru the same speaker cabinet for a better comparison 👍
Hey Johan ... Have you had a chance yet to get your hands on the JTM Studio (ST20H) ? ..From the reviews ive seen its the best of the 4 studio amps...It would be great to get your opinion on it ?
I think the guitar here shines. What model and pickups is it? Thanks johan
Thanks! It’s mostly a Nordin Krystin Comet with Lundgren Heaven 57 Pickups
Thanks Glad to hear it! I usually first match the settings and the iteratively tweak the second rig to sound like the first one by ear
Perfect, thanks again!
