I'm a little late but looking back on this now, I think Chad was really well written in that his idea of a romantic relationship was clearly heavily if not entirely informed by media representation of romance. Between his schmoozing/flirting, his extreme and ultimately fatal reliance on big romantic gestures over actual relationship development, and the way he seemed to fall in love more with the idea of Sunny than the reality of her as a person and a relationship with her, among other things, the way things went makes perfect sense. Like you said, he grew up in this Hollywood world, developed huge overconfidence as well as an obsession with image and publicity, and people don't change overnight, especially from their formative years.
that's such a good point i never considered it! now it makes me wish the writers had explored the simple country girl dates hollywood child actor turned heartthrob trope a bit more. instead of chad being full of himself they could've explore sonny being jealous of how "in demand" he is with the girls among the fact that their ideal romantic scenarios and fantasies don't align much. this way we could've gotten more cute banter between them like s1 where they fight over what kind of date to go on and how public they wanna be etc.

I personnaly think that the writers would get them back together but wouldn't develope his character. The writers just kept him doing the most absurd things about him being a narcissistic man, and on the other ep he's bringing flowers and being the perfect bf. I hated that they were always breaking up - getting together, and Sonny always giving him a second chance, when he really doesn't deserved it. To me that's a toxic relatioship because he puts sonny in this emotional roller coaster. I'm so sad about it because Chad was my favourite character on this show but the writers ruined him.
Bridgit Mendler or some other actress should’ve been Sonny instead. She auditioned for the role but as we all know, Demi won the role. And I still think they should’ve turned it down. They knew what they were getting themselves into with their mental health problems AND substance abuse problems AND their music career AND the Camp Rock movies and they could’ve taken as long of a break in rehab as they needed instead of adding even more burden on themselves by taking the TITULAR LEAD ROLE IN A TV SERIES!!!! And we all know what happened; the show got cancelled because of them. One of the things I hate the most is when a single IP is ruined by a single person’s terrible decisions. And this was one of them. If this was one of the reasons why you or some people hate Sonny With a Chance or just don’t want to watch it, I completely get it. I liked the show for the good moments they had but it doesn’t make me any less sad about its’ cancellation. And Disney needs their own Quiet on Set installment.
My absolute favourite Disney ship as a kid. I didn't like when they actually got together, they lost their natural chemistry and all the fighting felt forced, like the writers had no way to make the characters exist together without having a blow up and reconciliation every time. But I agree, top-tier enemies to lovers!

So trueeeee, I feel that they were better when they were just enemies-friends. I don't understand why they made Chad do these all absurd things in their relationship, like? One episode he has to prove that he loves sunny more than ever and almost dies falling off a plane, and then on another ep he actually sends his double on multiple dates to his own safety? It's so out of character for him. Yes he has all these flaws but it's no excuse for the character just going round and round, without ever developing.
I personally just pretend that all the drama in their relationship doesn't exist because all of it was so obviously put there because the writers didn't know what to do with them now that they were together. Like, Chad is a self centered guy, but his character wouldn't do some of the stuff they wrote him doing.
Same, we see Chad scale a building and refuse a parachute picking sonny over himself at times. So suddenly acting like Chad would be cool with sending someone else date sonny for him and supposedly know nothing about her makes no sense.
That last "good good, fine fine" was sad... it's a shame that the series was canceled and we never saw a reconciliation between them (and a possible character development for Chad). Channy was one of the few ships that managed to move me with every interaction.
I feel like the show had no idea what to do with them as a couple. Sadly this often happens with dynamics that are about them not admitting their feelings once they admit their feelings they have to scramble to come up with something else and often make the couple toxic or unlikable. I chose to remember fondly their good moments and imagine the healthy progression they could have had instead of the weird ones we got.
The stunt double breakup always angered me because Chad really had grown and it was so obvious how much he cared for Sonny just for him to act so out of character for a stupid bit. If that episode didn't exist then I think their actual breakup would have worked better because I think they should eventually end up together but with the pretext of that second chance Sonny gave Chad that he really didnt deserve, it doesnt do much for either of their characters to end up together after another breakup. So I'm going to pretend that episode is not canon/doesn't exist and imagine that the real second chance happens sometime in a hypothetical season three and is done in a way that really shows why they are good together and that they have grown as characters to be whats best for one another
Also, Chad had always been CRAZY jealous of Sunny. He freaked out when she kissed Tawny’s date on the kiss cam. Was super jealous on the fake date episode, and so on. He would NEVER send another dude to go out with his girl, wtf???
Sterling said in an interview that Demi called him (around 2021?) and she invited him to her house & they had a long & nice talk about everything so seems like they are on good terms again ❤ which is awesome because it feels like a happy ending for Chad & Sonny as well 😌❤️ Oh I was so in love with Sterling back in the days ❤ I actually rewatched Sonny with a chance twice after this review ❤ it’s so rare for young actors to have such a strong & beautiful chemistry ^^ Demi & Sterling are my favorite Disney ship by far 💋

the disney channel lore i always bought into was that they're all the same universe but sonny with a chance takes place in the "real" world... so random and mackenzie falls are the disney channel hits in this world (which is why s3 being purely so random still makes sense to me. they're part of the same network and chad HAS to join, i don't see him wanting to in any other situation)
They may have had a toxic relationship due to Chad being so selfish but they had good moments too. My favorite Disney couple of all time even with how toxic they could be. Also SWAC is my favorite Disney Channel show.

@theroyalebunny8239 Tbh, the stuff he asked for was something season 1 Chad never would. Condor was more than happy to give Chad whatever he wanted as long as he wasn't overly greedy. Season 1 Chad knew there was a line not to be crossed. Season 2 Chad just felt like a dumb knockoff by doing something without thinking of the consequences, all because of bad cell reception when he couldn't hear Sonny clearly and took her advice the wrong way. Season 1 Chad was smarter and more like a Slytherin. He was ambitious and cunning, and always thought about his moves before he made them. In season 2, they made Chad seem unable to even live without help from Sonny which was just wrong. They made him seem more like an accessory to her rather than a person with his own mind and soul.

The only reason Chad asked for those things is because he found out Zac had them, but if he never had it then Chad wouldn’t have asked for it. Season 2 Chad is still Chad after all even though he had slight character development before it went to hell. Chad being Chad, he was going to do what he wanted anyways because it pissed him off that Zac had better stuff than him. It helped that Sonny wasn’t there to try and stop him but even if Sonny said not to do it he would probably scheme behind her back 😭

I saw a bit of his season 1 personality in him while he was still dating Sonny and it seemed like he was holding back until he couldn’t anymore because he was pissed his show didn’t win the award and Sonny’s did. The writers probably did that on purpose before they knew the show would get cancelled because they had things in mind for his character later on but unfortunately Demi was going through terrible things so we never saw it happen. I’m glad she decided to get the help she needed though

Channy in season one was so much fun and organic and less forced. I liked seeing Chad soften and sort of grow as a person in season one, and I felt like season 2 really regressed his character. I'm glad Sonny ultimately stood her ground but I loved that ship so much. I would love to see a reboot and a proper ending

i used to write so much fanfic for them oh lord lol chad was SO FUN to write. i never had a character that fun before, and never had another again. he was an absolute blast to write and i think it's because how fun and genuine his character was written for the show. he captured that "dumb teenage boy" energy without crossing the line into some icky territory other enemies to lovers teen shows and romances do. he was just so much fun. their energies were great! editing to add: you are absolutely gorgeous with glasses or without!

To be fair, their breakup makes sense, so i am not even upset about it. But i also agree, that it would be nice to see them years later as grownups who have changed and finally can be in healthy relationship.

You weren't harsh! You took the content at face value which is good! Personally, I just think it all came down to how they were written. Chad in S1 was not as an asshole as he was in S2. I don't like that they made him act like he didn't care and didn't have a good side like he did in S1. It always felt a bit disconnected. I also found the forced fighting as just a way to make plots rather than focusing on the randoms doing random stuff again. There was nothing wrong as keeping them as a good non-toxic relationship but I guess that wasn't enough. The kiss episode rlly pissed me off I always felt bad that they felt pressured to do so. I ALSO pretend that the Chaz double episode just doesn't exist because it feels SO out of Chad's character. Anyways I choose ti not acknowledged all that sucked cus I enjoy being HAPPY. I love me some chaddy!
I genuinely think that with another season or two we could have gotten to a point where Chad genuinely grew enough to be with her. I think while there may have been a few missteps from the writers, overall they were a really good couple (especially by Disney Channel standards). I think the biggest problem was definitely the Chaz episode. I would have liked it better if it had been less about Chad being selfish and more about the studio making Chaz stand in on dangerous dates to "preserve his camera-ready face". It could have been a conflict they fought to resolve together instead of making Chad backslide that far. And if the writers were REALLY desperate for conflict, I would have loved it if they had brought in Chad's parents and they thought she wasn't good enough for him. He could have defended her and proven that he's improved and gotten past most, if not all, of his self-obsession and narcissistic tendencies.
looking back i think the biggest issue with the writing of their fights after they got together was that it was always chad who messed up. this made his character regress and turn into an inconsiderate oblivious jerk instead of the snarky charasmatic bastard he was in s1. on the other hand, sonny went from goofy bubbly new girl to saint ring leader who was annoyed and mad all the time. they could've explored the idea of their backgrounds coming between their relationships instead of whatever s2 was. chad's idea of romance comes from whatever he's seen in hollywood and ofcourse mckenzie falls so he goes big but messes up with small things and doesnt realize sonny isnt into those things. meanwhile sonny is from a small town and tho she's gotten used to the stardom, she prefers to keep her personal life private and likes more simple things when it comes to romance. so while dating she might get uncomfortable with how girls fawn over chad, and chad being chad, he relishes in it not noticing how it makes sonny feel coz to him all thats nit real sonny is. we could've had their fun banter fighting over what kinds of dates to go on and how much they wanna publisize their relationship. also!! instead of pitting the shows against each other they could've done a wacky crossover!!! which channy were over the moon about but the rest of the cast of bothel shows were salty with and channy could've had fun sches to make them bond!! ughh i wish we could have a redo of s2 or even correct what we had in a s3
God, I'll take this comment as my personal canon. 😍 This would have been sooo good! They should have written about their background differences, what did their families think about them dating? (it could have been that Chad's family was classist and/or elitist and weren't so sure about Chad dating someone like Sonny. I don't even remember if they ever showed something about Chad's family). They could also have showed how Sonny felt out of place in Chad's word and her being unsecure about the future of their relationship, all the while Chad could have acted as the supportive, caring boyfriend she needed, trying to prove to her, but in a honest way, that he really didn't care about such things; the pressures of being so famous at such a young age and add on top of that the romantic side of their relationship. I honestly think the part they got right was the competitive aspect of their relationship. I mean, they were young, and both had these big dreams of being recognized for their acting and being the best, but instead of pitying one against the other they could have written it as them finding a common ground, learning to coperate and subdue their selfishness and realizing there are much more important things in life than fame and hollywood success (because they cared about each other more than anything, because it was real and not something shallow and fleeting). I really love the talk show episode because it really is a great season 1 finale, it not only forces Channy to adress their feelings in a direct way but it also wraps up Tawny's arc for the first season and I really feel like the Sonny Tawny friendship is just as important to the show as Channy is, if not more
I love Sonny and Chad so so much, and I hate how they ended. If the show got to continue I think it would have been a great segway to Chad getting some serious character development and the show giving an example of knowing your worth in a relationship. But since that didn't happen, it makes me so sad that they wrote that stupid stunt double plot, like there was no need for it to ruin their cute relationship. The tween choice plot makes way more sense, as it aligns with Chad's character. The stunt double plot would make more sense if instead Chad just kept ditching dates or canceling them at the last minute because he couldn't put himself in danger due to his Mackenzie Falls contract. But of course that's just regarding their relationship storyline, I understand this is a kid's sitcom, so this suggestion wouldn't be entertaining enough. Point is I'm forever heartbroken over channy but I'm running with that Calabasas endgame.

This ship was what got me into fanfiction as a kid, I was Hooked. The key for me was how Chad seems like he's losing control over his carefully curated image the whole time, like Sonny is just similar enough to him to make him feel comfortable while being different enough to pull him out of his shell. It's an incredibly endearing dynamic! Having Chad feel insecure and scramble back to his crueler persona once they start dating is disappointing, but in an uncomfortably realistic way. I wouldn't have minded if they stuck with a fluffier story about Sonny and Chad not only helping Chad work through his insecurities, but also have him learn about Sonny's passions and learn what kind of support she wanted from him. Sonny could still explore her jealousy and competitiveness, but since Chad knows those feelings so well he would be able to actually talk them through with her.
My personal opinion is that if season 3 had happened Chad would have gotten over himself somehow and they would’ve gotten back together (Or at least I hope that’s what would’ve happened)

When I watched Sonny with a Chance for the first time, I couldn’t believe how they didn’t technically ended up together, even if it was obviously an inconclusive finale, due to the cancellation of the show. My biggest problem with this ship is that S1 Chad was absolutely charming, witty, confident, smart and had TONS of rizz. So his rivalry with sunny was really captivating to watch, the chemistry and the romantic tension was insane. But in s2, for some reason, they turned Chad into a HIMBO. S1 Chad would've never thrown up on Sunny on their first date (that was hard to watch even as a kid), take 4 MONTHS to kiss her (he was constantly rizzing her up, he literally leaned in for a kiss when he guest stared in so random, wtf happened in S2?), would've NEVER send another guy to date his girl (he showed multiple times how jealous he is of her), and wouldn't do lame shit like putting his head on the plate to surprise her, that man grew up as a hollywood heartrob ffs. Actually, S1 Chad would honestly think S2 Chad is as much of a loser as Grady and Nico. Chad and Sunny could've been sooo much better if they just kept Chad's character like he was in the first season, instead of dumbing him down for the sake of humour.
how could you not talk about when sonny lets tawni use her house for a date and her phone accidentally dials chads number when it falls in the grinder so he goes to her house to see if she’s okay. i love that episode.

great analysis! i wasn't into a lot of disney shows as a kid, but when i started listening to Demi's music in my teens, i watched swac and i loved their relationship so much, especially in s1, but always felt that the actual relationship between them in s2 was missing something, and i think you addressed the issues here in the video better than i ever would. unfortunately we didn't had more seasons, but at least we had demi and sterling's headcanon to make up for it ❤
I rewatched this show around 2 years ago because of them. It used to be one of my favourites as a kid, so I wanted to see if I would still love it. Season 1 is literally perfect with them being actual enemies to lovers and having so many funny, sweet moments. I also like season 2 up to their downfall, but Sonny and Chad did lose a bit of their spark when they got together. I still love them a lot in both seasons, but the writing was clearly better when they were still figuring out their feelings/denying them. While I was rewatching, I remembered that they eventually break up and I just stopped after episode 17. I didn't realize it was actually the beginning of their downfall😭I hate the way they basically broke up 3 times in 3 episodes...It was so weird of them to start Chad's development and then suddenly make him do really awful things to Sonny. Honestly, the last episode of the season actually seems better than the previous 3, maybe they could've broken them up ONCE and then continue with them in season 3, but sadly they didn't get the chance to and already destroyed the ship😭 Overall, I still like to think about them as one of my favourite ships, but I'll just ignore the last episodes like I ignore the 3rd season of H2O when it comes to Zikki😃Glad the actors confirmed them as endgame. I think Sonny and Chad before episode 17 really had the potential of being endgame in the show:)
I think if the show had gotten a third season we would've gotten a Chad redemption arc and seen Sonny working on herself too, so when they got together it actually would've been a healthy relationship. I remember watching the episodes as a kid and I noticed there were red flags in their relationship from the beginning. I think Sterling Knight is a much nicer guy than Chad Dylan Cooper, so it was always genuine when he played nice Chad.

Channy was probably my first big ship ever and its rise and eventual fall absolutely broke my heart. I recently rewatched the show and it's kind of insane how good they are early on and how they really did not know what to do with them in s2. Like the potential was so good and they decided to make them the most annoying on-off couple - I'm not saying they couldn't be one, but I feel like after the first three break-ups, Sonny at least would get her stuff together and get them in line/break up with him entirely until he grows up, but they kept bringing them back together. I'm so glad that they gave us all some closure in the Zoom reunion; I do wish they would do an actual meet-up or something now that they can meet in person, but I know Disney has long move past Sonny with a Chance at this point unfortunately. But at least the fanfics are decent to fill the void of that ending.
I LITERALLY just watched Sonny with a Chance for the first time literally this last week (didn't have cable as a kid and started to get out of the Disney loop more and more at around the time it aired) and my sister started watching it and put the first episode on and I got into it and THIS SHIP IS THE BEST I'VE SEEN IN SOOO LOOONG. so i watched a video called 'the COMPLETE map of the disney channel multiverse' on a channel called mr. nostalgia, and he basically explained his theory about wizards, suite life, hannah montana, that's so raven, etc being in what he calls 'earth-1' because they are all seen having crossovers. and sonny with a chance and other shows exist in a different plane called 'earth-2' as demonstrated by selena gomez existing as herself, an actress, in sonny with a chance. if you have an hour to spare, it's an entertaining video haha. and thanks for covering channy, caitlin! this ship definitely altered my brain chemistry as a kid lol.
I honestly remember hating so much about this show (I never once found the So Random jokes funny and I didn’t really like any of the characters), BUT I do remember watching it purely for Sonny and Chad's relationship.
Based on my own research l, The only Disney channel shows that so far show no connection to others are Sonny with a Chance, due to WOWP being said to be a show in that world, Andi Mack which made no connections in turns of cameos or crossovers, and Villains of Valley View which so far hasn't had any crossovers or cameos but that's still subject to change. Every other Disney channel show has either had crossovers, cameos, or Easter eggs from other shows confirming that they exist within the same universe.
I'm less than halfway done the video and haven't seen Sonny with a Chance since i was a kid, it also was never my favourite show and I'd only watch it when nothing better was on... but Sterling Knight is making me laugh constantly in this video. I'm a little late but looking back on this now, I think Chad was really well written in that his idea of a romantic relationship was clearly heavily if not entirely informed by media representation of romance. Between his schmoozing/flirting, his extreme and ultimately fatal reliance on big romantic gestures over actual relationship development, and the way he seemed to fall in love more with the idea of Sunny than the reality of her as a person and a relationship with her, among other things, the way things went makes perfect sense. Like you said, he grew up in this Hollywood world, developed huge overconfidence as well as an obsession with image and publicity, and people don't change overnight, especially from their formative years.
that's such a good point i never considered it! now it makes me wish the writers had explored the simple country girl dates hollywood child actor turned heartthrob trope a bit more. instead of chad being full of himself they could've explore sonny being jealous of how "in demand" he is with the girls among the fact that their ideal romantic scenarios and fantasies don't align much. this way we could've gotten more cute banter between them like s1 where they fight over what kind of date to go on and how public they wanna be etc.

I personnaly think that the writers would get them back together but wouldn't develope his character. The writers just kept him doing the most absurd things about him being a narcissistic man, and on the other ep he's bringing flowers and being the perfect bf. I hated that they were always breaking up - getting together, and Sonny always giving him a second chance, when he really doesn't deserved it. To me that's a toxic relatioship because he puts sonny in this emotional roller coaster. I'm so sad about it because Chad was my favourite character on this show but the writers ruined him.
Bridgit Mendler or some other actress should’ve been Sonny instead. She auditioned for the role but as we all know, Demi won the role. And I still think they should’ve turned it down. They knew what they were getting themselves into with their mental health problems AND substance abuse problems AND their music career AND the Camp Rock movies and they could’ve taken as long of a break in rehab as they needed instead of adding even more burden on themselves by taking the TITULAR LEAD ROLE IN A TV SERIES!!!! And we all know what happened; the show got cancelled because of them. One of the things I hate the most is when a single IP is ruined by a single person’s terrible decisions. And this was one of them. If this was one of the reasons why you or some people hate Sonny With a Chance or just don’t want to watch it, I completely get it. I liked the show for the good moments they had but it doesn’t make me any less sad about its’ cancellation. And Disney needs their own Quiet on Set installment.
My absolute favourite Disney ship as a kid. I didn't like when they actually got together, they lost their natural chemistry and all the fighting felt forced, like the writers had no way to make the characters exist together without having a blow up and reconciliation every time. So trueeeee, I feel that they were better when they were just enemies-friends. I don't understand why they made Chad do these all absurd things in their relationship, like? One episode he has to prove that he loves sunny more than ever and almost dies falling off a plane, and then on another ep he actually sends his double on multiple dates to his own safety? It's so out of character for him. Yes he has all these flaws but it's no excuse for the character just going round and round, without ever developing.
I personally just pretend that all the drama in their relationship doesn't exist because all of it was so obviously put there because the writers didn't know what to do with them now that they were together.

Same, we see Chad scale a building and refuse a parachute picking sonny over himself at times. So suddenly acting like Chad would be cool with sending someone else date sonny for him and supposedly know nothing about her makes no sense.

That last "good good, fine fine" was sad... it's a shame that the series was canceled and we never saw a reconciliation between them (and a possible character development for Chad). Channy was one of the few ships that managed to move me with every interaction.
I feel like the show had no idea what to do with them as a couple. Sadly this often happens with dynamics that are about them not admitting their feelings once they admit their feelings they have to scramble to come up with something else and often make the couple toxic or unlikable. I chose to remember fondly their good moments and imagine the healthy progression they could have had instead of the weird ones we got.
It’s an awesome pairing because their energies were just right and they complemented each other. Waiting for my Chad.

The stunt double breakup always angered me because Chad really had grown and it was so obvious how much he cared for Sonny just for him to act so out of character for a stupid bit. If that episode didn't exist then I think their actual breakup would have worked better because I think they should eventually end up together but with the pretext of that second chance Sonny gave Chad that he really didnt deserve, it doesnt do much for either of their characters to end up together after another breakup. So I'm going to pretend that episode is not canon/doesn't exist and imagine that the real second chance happens sometime in a hypothetical season three and is done in a way that really shows why they are good together and that they have grown as characters to be whats best for one another

@theroyalebunny8239 Tbh, the stuff he asked for was something season 1 Chad never would. Condor was more than happy to give Chad whatever he wanted as long as he wasn't overly greedy. Season 1 Chad knew there was a line not to be crossed. Season 2 Chad just felt like a dumb knockoff by doing something without thinking of the consequences, all because of bad cell reception when he couldn't hear Sonny clearly and took her advice the wrong way. Season 1 Chad was smarter and more like a Slytherin. He was ambitious and cunning, and always thought about his moves before he made them. In season 2, they made Chad seem unable to even live without help from Sonny which was just wrong. They made him seem more like an accessory to her rather than a person with his own mind and soul.

The only reason Chad asked for those things is because he found out Zac had them, but if he never had it then Chad wouldn’t have asked for it. Season 2 Chad is still Chad after all even though he had slight character development before it went to hell. Chad being Chad, he was going to do what he wanted anyways because it pissed him off that Zac had better stuff than him. It helped that Sonny wasn’t there to try and stop him but even if Sonny said not to do it he would probably scheme behind her back 😭

The writers probably did that on purpose before they knew the show would get cancelled because they had things in mind for his character later on but unfortunately Demi was going through terrible things so we never saw it happen. Channy in season one was so much fun and organic and less forced. I liked seeing Chad soften and sort of grow as a person in season one, and I felt like season 2 really regressed his character. I'm glad Sonny ultimately stood her ground but I loved that ship so much. I would love to see a reboot and a proper ending

i used to write so much fanfic for them oh lord lol chad was SO FUN to write. i never had a character that fun before, and never had another again. he was an absolute blast to write and i think it's because how fun and genuine his character was written for the show. he captured that "dumb teenage boy" energy without crossing the line into some icky territory other enemies to lovers teen shows and romances do. he was just so much fun. their energies were great! editing to add: you are absolutely gorgeous with glasses or without!

Personally, I just think it all came down to how they were written. Chad in S1 was not as an asshole as he was in S2. I don't like that they made him act like he didn't care and didn't have a good side like he did in S1. It always felt a bit disconnected. I also found the forced fighting as just a way to make plots rather than focusing on the randoms doing random stuff again. There was nothing wrong as keeping them as a good non-toxic relationship but I guess that wasn't enough.
The kiss episode rlly pissed me off I always felt bad that they felt pressured to do so. I ALSO pretend that the Chaz double episode just doesn't exist because it feels SO out of Chad's character.
Anyways I choose ti not acknowledged all that sucked cus I enjoy being HAPPY. I love me some chaddy!

I started rewatching this last week because of how much I love their enemies to lovers trope. I'm so glad you're talking about this!
I genuinely think that with another season or two we could have gotten to a point where Chad genuinely grew enough to be with her. I think while there may have been a few missteps from the writers, overall they were a really good couple (especially by Disney Channel standards). I think the biggest problem was definitely the Chaz episode. I would have liked it better if it had been less about Chad being selfish and more about the studio making Chaz stand in on dangerous dates to "preserve his camera-ready face". It could have been a conflict they fought to resolve together instead of making Chad backslide that far. And if the writers were REALLY desperate for conflict, I would have loved it if they had brought in Chad's parents and they thought she wasn't good enough for him. He could have defended her and proven that he's improved and gotten past most, if not all, of his self-obsession and narcissistic tendencies.
looking back i think the biggest issue with the writing of their fights after they got together was that it was always chad who messed up. this made his character regress and turn into an inconsiderate oblivious jerk instead of the snarky charasmatic bastard he was in s1. on the other hand, sonny went from goofy bubbly new girl to saint ring leader who was annoyed and mad all the time. they could've explored the idea of their backgrounds coming between their relationships instead of whatever s2 was. chad's idea of romance comes from whatever he's seen in hollywood and ofcourse mckenzie falls so he goes big but messes up with small things and doesnt realize sonny isnt into those things. meanwhile sonny is from a small town and tho she's gotten used to the stardom, she prefers to keep her personal life private and likes more simple things when it comes to romance. so while dating she might get uncomfortable with how girls fawn over chad, and chad being chad, he relishes in it not noticing how it makes sonny feel coz to him all thats nit real sonny is. we could've had their fun banter fighting over what kinds of dates to go on and how much they wanna publisize their relationship. also!! instead of pitting the shows against each other they could've done a wacky crossover!!! which channy were over the moon about but the rest of the cast of bothel shows were salty with and channy could've had fun sches to make them bond!! ughh i wish we could have a redo of s2 or even correct what we had in a s3
God, I'll take this comment as my personal canon. 😍 This would have been sooo good! They should have written about their background differences, what did their families think about them dating? (it could have been that Chad's family was classist and/or elitist and weren't so sure about Chad dating someone like Sonny. I don't even remember if they ever showed something about Chad's family). They could also have showed how Sonny felt out of place in Chad's word and her being unsecure about the future of their relationship, all the while Chad could have acted as the supportive, caring boyfriend she needed, trying to prove to her, but in a honest way, that he really didn't care about such things; the pressures of being so famous at such a young age and add on top of that the romantic side of their relationship. I honestly think the part they got right was the competitive aspect of their relationship. I mean, they were young, and both had these big dreams of being recognized for their acting and being the best, but instead of pitying one against the other they could have written it as them finding a common ground, learning to coperate and subdue their selfishness and realizing there are much more important things in life than fame and hollywood success (because they cared about each other more than anything, because it was real and not something shallow and fleeting). God, you have no idea HOW MUCH I LOVE THIS COMMENT. T H A N K Y O U. The possibilities were endless. You should have written S02, and I might have to write a fanfic out of this, LOL 🤣😍❤

I really love the talk show episode because it really is a great season 1 finale, it not only forces Channy to adress their feelings in a direct way but it also wraps up Tawny's arc for the first season and I really feel like the Sonny Tawny friendship is just as important to the show as Channy is, if not more
I love Sonny and Chad so so much, and I hate how they ended. If the show got to continue I think it would have been a great segway to Chad getting some serious character development and the show giving an example of knowing your worth in a relationship. But since that didn't happen, it makes me so sad that they wrote that stupid stunt double plot, like there was no need for it to ruin their cute relationship. The tween choice plot makes way more sense, as it aligns with Chad's character. The stunt double plot would make more sense if instead Chad just kept ditching dates or canceling them at the last minute because he couldn't put himself in danger due to his Mackenzie Falls contract. But of course that's just regarding their relationship storyline, I understand this is a kid's sitcom, so this suggestion wouldn't be entertaining enough. Point is I'm forever heartbroken over channy but I'm running with that Calabasas endgame.

This ship was what got me into fanfiction as a kid, I was Hooked. The key for me was how Chad seems like he's losing control over his carefully curated image the whole time, like Sonny is just similar enough to him to make him feel comfortable while being different enough to pull him out of his shell. It's an incredibly endearing dynamic! Having Chad feel insecure and scramble back to his crueler persona once they start dating is disappointing, but in an uncomfortably realistic way. I wouldn't have minded if they stuck with a fluffier story about Sonny and Chad not only helping Chad work through his insecurities, but also have him learn about Sonny's passions and learn what kind of support she wanted from him. Sonny could still explore her jealousy and competitiveness, but since Chad knows those feelings so well he would be able to actually talk them through with her.

This is my fav Disney ship of all time! When I watched Sonny with a Chance for the first time, I couldn’t believe how they didn’t technically ended up together, even if it was obviously an inconclusive finale, due to the cancellation of the show. They had problems as a couple, but THEY HAD THE BEST CHEMISTRY TOO. The memories, miss them

Channy was the first people I ever shipped. I wrote fanfictions in my notepads....these 2 were an awakening in me.
We were robbed of a Sonny and Chad reconciliation, and a build up to a future relationship with Grady and waitress girl.
My biggest problem with this ship is that S1 Chad was absolutely charming, witty, confident, smart and had TONS of rizz. So his rivalry with sunny was really captivating to watch, the chemistry and the romantic tension was insane. But in s2, for some reason, they turned Chad into a HIMBO. S1 Chad would've never thrown up on Sunny on their first date (that was hard to watch even as a kid), take 4 MONTHS to kiss her (he was constantly rizzing her up, he literally leaned in for a kiss when he guest stared in so random, wtf happened in S2?), would've NEVER send another guy to date his girl (he showed multiple times how jealous he is of her), and wouldn't do lame shit like putting his head on the plate to surprise her, that man grew up as a hollywood heartrob ffs. Actually, S1 Chad would honestly think S2 Chad is as much of a loser as Grady and Nico.
Chad and Sunny could've been sooo much better if they just kept Chad's character like he was in the first season, instead of dumbing him down for the sake of humour.
how could you not talk about when sonny lets tawni use her house for a date and her phone accidentally dials chads number when it falls in the grinder so he goes to her house to see if she’s okay. i love that episode.

great analysis! i wasn't into a lot of disney shows as a kid, but when i started listening to Demi's music in my teens, i watched swac and i loved their relationship so much, especially in s1, but always felt that the actual relationship between them in s2 was missing something, and i think you addressed the issues here in the video better than i ever would. unfortunately we didn't had more seasons, but at least we had demi and sterling's headcanon to make up for it ❤

Demi wasn’t actually a “20-something” while filming swac. She was like 15/16 when they started and then 17/18 when it got canceled.
I rewatched this show around 2 years ago because of them. It used to be one of my favourites as a kid, so I wanted to see if I would still love it. Season 1 is literally perfect with them being actual enemies to lovers and having so many funny, sweet moments. I also like season 2 up to their downfall, but Sonny and Chad did lose a bit of their spark when they got together. I still love them a lot in both seasons, but the writing was clearly better when they were still figuring out their feelings/denying them.
While I was rewatching, I remembered that they eventually break up and I just stopped after episode 17. I didn't realize it was actually the beginning of their downfall😭I hate the way they basically broke up 3 times in 3 episodes...It was so weird of them to start Chad's development and then suddenly make him do really awful things to Sonny. Honestly, the last episode of the season actually seems better than the previous 3, maybe they could've broken them up ONCE and then continue with them in season 3, but sadly they didn't get the chance to and already destroyed the ship😭
Overall, I still like to think about them as one of my favourite ships, but I'll just ignore the last episodes like I ignore the 3rd season of H2O when it comes to Zikki😃Glad the actors confirmed them as endgame. I think Sonny and Chad before episode 17 really had the potential of being endgame in the show:)
I think if the show had gotten a third season we would've gotten a Chad redemption arc and seen Sonny working on herself too, so when they got together it actually would've been a healthy relationship. I remember watching the episodes as a kid and I noticed there were red flags in their relationship from the beginning. I think Sterling Knight is a much nicer guy than Chad Dylan Cooper, so it was always genuine when he played nice Chad.

I believe that sonny with a chance is outside the Disney channel universe since wizards of waverly place is a tv show in the universe and they even mentioned how chad still thinks Miley and Hannah are the same person

Channy was probably my first big ship ever and its rise and eventual fall absolutely broke my heart. I recently rewatched the show and it's kind of insane how good they are early on and how they really did not know what to do with them in s2. Like the potential was so good and they decided to make them the most annoying on-off couple - I'm not saying they couldn't be one, but I feel like after the first three break-ups, Sonny at least would get her stuff together and get them in line/break up with him entirely until he grows up, but they kept bringing them back together. I'm so glad that they gave us all some closure in the Zoom reunion; I do wish they would do an actual meet-up or something now that they can meet in person, but I know Disney has long move past Sonny with a Chance at this point unfortunately. But at least the fanfics are decent to fill the void of that ending.
I LITERALLY just watched Sonny with a Chance for the first time literally this last week (didn't have cable as a kid and started to get out of the Disney loop more and more at around the time it aired) and my sister started watching it and put the first episode on and I got into it and THIS SHIP IS THE BEST I'VE SEEN IN SOOO LOOONG. The first date had me cackling like a lunatic when he threw up. The bit of them both being mental and him physically caving to the unease was so bad it was so good, comedically 😭
This unlocked so many memories! Once you started talking about all the scenes it’s like they came rushing back like yes! I watched all of this and I loved them too ❤

God I’ve watched this damn show too many times because I’m quoting along with all the clips 😂 Channy were everything. Chad (and Tawni honestly) went through a whole character arc with proper development and no one gives the show credit for that great writing.

chad hiring a stunt double to date sonny was awful, but "october 2nd" as "the day you get a second chance" is etched into my mind forever. to me, they'll meet up again when they're in their late 20's and chad will go through a whole arc of having to prove to sonny that he's changed.
SWAC is still my favourite Disney show and the Sonny and Chad ship remains unmatched to this day, long live Channy. Not to mention it features the second best ship, Nico and Grady, and my favourite rivalry, Grady vs Aquaman lol
The writers really just kept writing an incredible character arc for Chade until the last 4 episodes deciding to just scrap all of that devolpment

so i watched a video called 'the COMPLETE map of the disney channel multiverse' on a channel called mr. nostalgia, and he basically explained his theory about wizards, suite life, hannah montana, that's so raven, etc being in what he calls 'earth-1' because they are all seen having crossovers. and sonny with a chance and other shows exist in a different plane called 'earth-2' as demonstrated by selena gomez existing as herself, an actress, in sonny with a chance. if you have an hour to spare, it's an entertaining video haha. and thanks for covering channy, caitlin! this ship definitely altered my brain chemistry as a kid lol.

I honestly remember hating so much about this show (I never once found the So Random jokes funny and I didn’t really like any of the characters), BUT I do remember watching it purely for Sonny and Chad's relationship.

Based on my own research l, The only Disney channel shows that so far show no connection to others are Sonny with a Chance, due to WOWP being said to be a show in that world, Andi Mack which made no connections in turns of cameos or crossovers, and Villains of Valley View which so far hasn't had any crossovers or cameos but that's still subject to change.
Every other Disney channel show has either had crossovers, cameos, or Easter eggs from other shows confirming that they exist within the same universe.
I'm less than halfway done the video and haven't seen Sonny with a Chance since i was a kid, it also was never my favourite show and I'd only watch it when nothing better was on... but Sterling Knight is making me laugh constantly in this video. He plays the smarmy pompous jerk character who's secretly a nice dude really well... It's a shame we don't (or at least i haven't) seen him in more things. He's really talented
