    A little correction - the 7th gen X1 Carbon has both down and up firing speakers (4 in total). The ones facing down are bigger, and so the sound will not be as great if You have it on Your lap vs if it's on the table. Either way, the speakers sound much better than on the 6th gen Carbon.

    • @audi4444player
      @audi4444player 4 года назад +1

      @@hh22/videos why though? 16::10 was the standard when we changed to widescreen and pretty much the only reason they stopped using them was the cost because tvs were understandably using 16:9 so it was cheaper to use the same ratio panels. not because it's better for computing, if you can have it 16:10 is significantly better for productivity work especially on the smaller screen sizes like these ultrabooks (eg on a 13 inch photoshop feels like the whole screen is menus, similar problem with other programs with many tools) and although some gamers insist the wider the better (ultrawide) Imo i feel more immersed in a game if the ratio is that little bit taller as it more evenly relates to my field of view. the more square ones are better in some regards but if you go too square the size of videos is imo too small. literally the only downsides ars black bars with video and cost, but if the screen is good enough as modern screens usually are the black is pretty dark to not be noticeable unlike older displays that really glowed and the cost on higher end or high volume devices is a negligible increase. you could argue the performance hit angle but really by that margin is anyone going to say that a 1080p is worse than a 720p or even that 768p is worse than 720p, perhaps if it was excessively more performance hungry like 4k or 8k but not with this minor difference

    • @nebula1923
      @nebula1923 4 года назад +3

      Hitch Hiker 16:9 is only better for watching movies and gaming. 16:10 and 3:2 are way better for general and productivity use due to the increased vertical screen space and you won’t have to scroll as much

    Something to be aware of. X1 carbon laptops have very reflective screens. Even the 1080P matte screen reflects a lot. You can see the reflection of the fingers while typing. (Very annoying) Everything is great but the screen and track pad is a bit too small. If you like to click with the track pad you will be hitting the button edge of the laptop a lot.

    Great review.
    Finally someone who adresses PMW-flickering! It dazzles me, that noone mentiones this. I didn't even know that this issue even existed until a few months ago.
    I always wondered, why my Eyes would kind of feel funny when I used the laptop in bed at night at very low brightness.
    I recently bought a XPS 15 with the OLED screen and let me tell you, the PWM and the "Anti-Burn-In" mechanisms Samsung used in this panel is horrible for your eyes. You really get uncomfortable when you stare at white backgrounds for a long period of time. Yet noone talks about this!
    In my opinion, manufacturers shouldn't even be allowed to release any laptops with major PWM-flickering! You will stare at those screens for hours and hours - so even if PWM is only potentially damaging for your eyes it should be banned!

      @@achi9133 I'm going Lenovo. The Dell XPS 13 hinge is not as strong as Lenovos, and went bad and wobbly for me after around year 3-4. Lenovos are tanks, look great in all environments whether business or casual, and quite frankly I just don't want to get another Dell XPS 13. Used Lenovo X1 Carbons are also going for cheap, and you can easily swap out ram and SSDs in most cases depending if you get the T or X series. You can get a decent working used X1 on ebay for $350 and buy your own SSD & Windows.

    For me - it's like you are describing my T480. Lenovo rarely does something RIGHT today, but it still does that from time to time. I guess this is one of those times. I won't replace my t480 with this one any time soon but if something happens to it I may consider buying this one. Thank you!

    Josh, thank for your review, but I still have a doubt about the monitor. What option is the best for daily use as a developer 1) 14.0" FHD (1920x1080) IPS, low power, anti-glare, 400nits, 2) 14.0" FHD (1920 x 1080) IPS, touchscreen, anti-glare, 300 nits or 3) 14.0" WQHD (2560 x 1440) IPS, anti-glare, 300 nits

      Not Josh, but I have the WQHD as I wanted a higher resolution than 1080 and wanted a matte display. I run linux and well it was a bit annoying at first as there isn't any great way to scale the interface at non integer values. So I lowered the resolution to 2048x1152 which well is not the full 1440 but is still manageable. Text is great on this display and only in direct sunlight do I find it not bright enough.

    The location of the CTRL key is logical. With the pinky finger on CTRL, you can then press Z, X, and C with your ring, middle, and index fingers respectively.

    You advise to take the FHD screen... Well, some people who own it complain on Reddit that these screens have a ghosting issue.
    It is confirmed by a famous website, if you search. We're talking up to 70ms response time, which is ridiculous for a laptop this price.
    I appreciate that you mention PMW, that puts you above the average reviewer... But you advise to take the FHD screen that you haven't tried ?
    I ordered the WQHD and I'm praying it is actually good...

    Hi Josh. I'm already getting overwhelmed by so many laptop reviews til I saw yours. I agree with the majority that the content is great, punchy, and just really helpful, especially for a novice like me who is contemplating on buying my first ever personal laptop (been using my company-issued Lenovo X270 laptop til I resigned).
    Just a clarification. When you were explaining something about PWM, may I know why getting a model with 1080 screen is better than with a 4K? Is this something I can choose (or tell the sales agent to configure) before buying?
    Also, is the RAM/SSD expandable to 32GB and 1TB, respectively?

    Personally i think the bios option to switch the ctrl and fn keys does the job just fine, I've never found the key to be too small even once i switched it over to the fn key. Also there is a SIM card tray and microSD card reader on the back of the laptop behind a little cover slot :)

    Went with a x1 extreme over this CPU. Have a 6th gen Carbon thst has a better battery life than the 7th gen.

  • @xieliming

    FWIW I recommend the 6th Gen over the 7th. The chassis is almost identical but the keyboard has even more travel distance, and the screen is available in 2K HDR at 500nits, so pixel density, colour accuracy and brightness is fantastic without being an excessive battery drain and no PWM! Plus it has a micro SD slot! Downsides are no one-hand open, awful speakers, and 2K HDR screen is glossy, but that's a cheap/easy fix with a matte screen protector. Since it's the older model you can find them at even better prices with a 3 year warranty.

    One thing I noticed with this laptop is that the battery dies faster if you use google meet for school. Otherwise, the battery is pretty decent, but for remote schooling, you'd need to keep it plugged in or it will die by 1400 on a regular 825 - 1505 schedule. I have not been to school to see how it holds up with the battery life where you can't really charge it.

    Just bought the FHD version and there is something irritating about the screen on it as well. I dont think its PWM. I would call it it backlight leak for lack of a better term. It is extremely harsh on my eyes. Feels like an excess of blue light. F lux helps but not enough. It also has terrible ghosting. Sad that theres always a dealbraker with lenovo laptops.

    I really wanted to love this laptop... but I had many issues with it when I got it.... First was the obnoxious ticking noise coming from the fan when in certain positions... Second was the creaking noise coming from the screen hinge when opening/closing the screen. Third was the frequent problem of not being able to even turn on the damn thing from sleep! Fourth I had an issue with it even wanting to charge while the machine was off! Fifth was the return process which took over a month to get my money back, having to contact Lenovo, Paypal multiple times to get them to cooperate! I was about ready to contact a lawyer. Not saying everyone will have this same issue, but if you do buy this product, make sure that you do not have any of these issues... and if you do, return the product right away.
