    It's wonderful to have a real reviewer and not just a gamer/spec-sheet reader! I didn't know the 4K touchscreen on the P1 is matte versus glossy on the X1 Extreme: matte's what I want. I'm also glad you noted the lack of visible texture on the P1's screen: I've read complaints that the touch surface on the X1 Extreme is visible. Thank you, Lisa!

      No numpad. I can't imagine how they manage to offer a quadro-equipped laptop for engineering folks, and not add numpad function combined with Fn key.

    • @pd5156
      @pd5156 4 года назад +2

      @@circuitdotlt You can swap FN key with CTRL in BIOS or lenovo thinkvantage software (but I'm agree, it's dumb).
      I personaly like the fact that there's no numpad for aestethics and most the time I work with external monitor and external keyboard anyway.
      Also, lenovo has something for "numpad lovers", T5xx series and P53 (or something).
      This P1 is like more "pro" version of X1 extreme which is direct competitor for MacBook Pro (same thing with Dell's XPS "precision" and HP Zbook "Studio"). I'd like to see thicker powerfull 14 inch workstation for myslef, maybe Ryzen M4800u bring something like that in the future.

    • @circuitdotlt
      @circuitdotlt 4 года назад

      @@pd5156 yes you can swap Fn/Ctrl (but then you end up with incorrect markings on the keys).
      Numpad function, however, is a different issue with all lenovos. By numpad I mean the second function of JKLUIO keys. Most HPs and DELLs have them. No idea why lenovo does not include this, when there is zero extra cost. Or do they have to pay royalties to someone for including the feature??

Havent had any issues with it & ive actually dropped it from hip height 2 times which is crazy but it just got scratched nothing broke. I also play many games like League of Legends, DOTA, Oxygen Not Included, Rimworld, Stardew Valley, CS GO, WoW etc & it runs great.

    Thinkpads are legendary for their keyboards, but the P1 and X1 extreme gen 2 have a keyboard defect that cannot be understated. After trying 3 different devices, I gave up trying to use it. You have to press directly in the center of the key to register a press, and even then, it misses a substantial number of key strokes. Lenovo forums are full of reports and failed attempts to fix it.

    Thanks for the great reviews, Lisa! In the review of the 4k OLED MATTE screen (which sounds awesome!) In this video I'm seeing some crosshatch X shaped diagonal noise come and go in almost every photo that loads- does that happen in person, or is that camera/youtube compression playing tricks on me? I bought a X1 Extreme and
    + the thermal throttling is pretty horrific compared to other notebooks
    + the keyboard has typing issues (big thread on Lenovo forums, no solution on Lenovos side...
    + the fans spin up pretty loud
    + My oled screen is REALLY unevenly lit especially showing grey content and on lower brightness levels.
    + the Batterylife with my OLED is 4 Hours MAX.... Not sure how 7h are even possible there with a xeon processor and Quadro Graphics. The battery capacity was never designed for a 4K OLED screen as its the same as GEN 1 had without an OLED option.
    + on 1:05 i can see the screen being very glossy. So only the inner layer isnt shiny?
    For me this product is bad. They put the next gen Intel CPUs in a thermal design of the older generation. This and they didnt even fix the bios issues the device has with that
    Im not really happy even if i try cause other factors are really nice on this machine...
    Guess it never left the prototyping space and got pushed out with no thoughts spend....

      Intel XTU is your friend, undervolt it to avoid thermal and power throtling. (I get 60fps in witcher 3 on mid-high settings and max 70C)
      Typing issues will be solved by disabling that hybrid sleep or fast sleep win feature.
      Fans could be controlled from Vantage app.
      Xeon itself will get you much worse battery life, but not as much as that 4k display, so 4h with that spec is not that bad...

    I bought one when they still had the anniversary promo going for $1,636.08. Got the i9 with 16gb ram, 512 SSD. I wanted long battery life so I chose the 15.6" FHD (1920 x 1080) display. I got it mainly for programming, a little bit of an overkill, but boy this machine is blazing fast. It feels durable, ruggedized and light at the same time. One of the few problems I have is the fun noise, it kicks in once in a while when you are not even charging it and running light applications, and it comes on regularly when charging. Another problem is the back lit keyboard, the lights bleeds through the gaps around the keys and can be very uncomfortable to use when the light is on; I do touch typing so I can do without the light. The last one is the heat. If you normally put your laptop on your lab then the head can be a problem, especially when charging. If you are buying one, I will advice you install the browser extension honey, it will get you all the coupons that apply, and Lenovo have quite a lot of them. All in all, I love it because of how fast and steady it is.

    Is it a *true* 4K OLED matte display? Lenovo’s own website doesn’t list “anti-glare” as a spec for the 4K OLED panel for both the X1 and P1. One one forum I saw an owner posted that it is a glossy display that is almost matte. Is the X1 the same? I was about to get an X1 4K but if the panel is different on the P1 and is more matte, then my decision has been made.

    I feel like something from the thinkpad lineup is my only option in 2020.
    Ports, quality keyboard, a screen that doesn’t double as a mirror/smudge magnet, and a non touch option are all huge factors for me.
    I feel like laptops are moving more towards media devices than something to work on and that erks me.

    if i just want the laptop for watching 4k videos and web browsing will a i5 work with 4k or should i get a i7/i10 i don’t want to watch 4k videos and have it buffering . any thoughts?

    • @adultlunchables
      @adultlunchables 4 года назад +1

      4k on a laptop is pointless, the screen is too small to see the high resolution. You need to plug it into an external monitor to get the benefit of 4k resolution. Over at Linus Tech Tips they show that the human eye can't tell the difference between a 4k laptop and a 1080p laptop unless you move it to within 18 inches of your face and no one uses their laptops only 18 inches away from their face. Either way, any configuration on these laptops will be fine to watch 4k videos. Your eyes just won't see the benefit.

    • @tomswan3401
      @tomswan3401 4 года назад

      i think on a 15.5" laptop display one can really see the difference between 1080 and 4k. simply look at some movies with nature. even on a surface pro (12.3") one can see the difference.

    • @adultlunchables
      @adultlunchables 4 года назад

      @@tomswan3401 You would have to have identical laptops side by side, one with 4k and one with 1080p to try to determine that. Short of having a direct comparison, there's no way to tell what differences you're actually perceiving. For example, a Surface laptop might saturate the colors more of have a deeper HDR toning and you could mistake that with seeing the difference between 1080p and 4k. Also with video, compression kicks in. A 4k video is less compressed. So you might be responding to compression reduction and not an increase in pixels. The comparison video you use would have to be non compressed 1080p and non compressed 4k on the exact same laptop side by side.

      I5 would be good enough, just remember to install a h.264 encoder instead of vp8/9. H.264 encoding will use the GPU instead of the CPU to encode videos. Vp8/9 encoding uses CPU power to encode videos which is ineffective. You can download h.264 video encoding Software on chrome store

    I'm looking for a quiet [fanless] windows 10 tablet that uses very little power and is about 10inch screen that is easy to read on the screen. I need it to run 24/7 with only the screen off, but doing minor background processing that will read/write to the harddrive often. but occasionally i'd like to use it to do a little internet browsing and light reading. can't be less than 64gb harddrive and not less than 2gb ram.
    It can be an older tablet.. probably no older than a year 2012 model, because i don't need it to do powerful stuff, nor write/draw on the screen... so basic finger recognition is fine... doesn't have to have a pen.
    I don't want to spend more than 200$ for it but would prefer to spend around 100$.. perhaps USED on ebay.
    I see all kinds of tablets on ebay that are cheap but i can't tell if they are quiet and low powered like i need.

      You don't realize that not 100% of CPUs can run at the advertised speed while under-volted.
      It's like those 'overclocking guides' where they take one CPU and say 'you should be able to hit X.X to X.X GHz easy'...
      In actuality there are many (many) CPUs that require that much voltage to run as advertised and a bunch of people who get angry when their product doesn't meet some arbitrary expectation of running outside of spec (overclocked or under-volted).

    Lenovo has the worst customer service on the planet. I just got a first hand taste of it! Got the new x1 gen 2 and it wouldn't boot up after 10 days. Things happen (I didn't care at the time) so I sent it to service thinking it will take 6 business days as they claim, but instead they said its going to take up to 8-12 weeks to fix!! I decided to return it!! Now they wont give me back the laptop from the repair center (their base repair center) so I can send it in for a refund to lenovo. Logically speaking, you would think they can just take the laptop from the repair center themselves and do the return for the customer. No they cant!! I have to keep calling them and get New RMA's because they expire. I call once every 9 days to extend my return request due to the repair center not giving back my laptop. I have to talk to a new rep and explain the story every time. I've spent more time on the phone with Lenovo than using their product.
    I know you probably get paid by Lenovo and other companies, get that money!! not knocking the hustle but you should do reviews on the support side! Like give me real info on what happens if things weren't to work. I got a new Dell XPS 15 for my nephew and wow a wold of difference on support and talking to people! In the interim I am using a new surface pro 7 and wow this little thing gets the job done!
