  • Lisa Gade reviews the latest addition to the ThinkPad P series mobile workstation lineup- the Lenovo ThinkPad P1. It’s identical to the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Extreme we’ve already reviewed, with one difference: the P1 has NVIDIA Quadro dedicated graphics while the X1 Extreme has the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti Max-Q graphics card. This 15.6” laptop has Intel 8th gen 45 watt 6 core CPUs, making it as powerful as the larger ThinkPad P52, but a lot thinner and lighter. You can get up to an Intel Xeon CPU, and your choice of 2 Quadro graphics cards. It’s available with full HD and UHD 4K touch screens that support the ThinkPad Pen (Wacom AES digitizer). The machine has two M.2 NVMe SSD slots, 2 RAM slots and a fingerprint scanner and optional Windows Hello IR camera. Weight starts at just 3.76 lb. / 1.7 kg.

    I have done so much research on this particular laptop that it is NOT even funny. (Ive now owned this for two weeks now) And as a whole I'd say you gave the most honest REASONABLE average person review to it. You chose the right profession my friend, I look forward to liking your future videos just to help out :). Now as a consumer who attends collage for computer science whom also bought the base model (outside of upgrading storage) I would recommend this to the max. I can do all school work with ease as well as enjoying the keyboard at the same time lol, I'd also like to mention that people looking for something that will run league of legends, counter strike, fortnite etc. You aren't missing out on anything by buying this laptop at all. It runs everything I need it to amazingly :)

    I have been using the Xeon version of P1 as a replacement for a 2018 i9 Macbook Pro for photo and video editing. I can't believe I can be so happy for the change as I have been a Apple snob for years when it comes to video and photo editing. For my workflow, P1's performance and stability is superior to the MBP.

    • @MutongMusic
      @MutongMusic 5 лет назад +1

      the dreamcolor xeon is never available, I bought the p1 instead. it is a lot lighter (by half a kilo) than the x360 but it's not 360. but its fine for me though. also the p1 with 4k touch does support Wacom aes pen. though not specified. the x360 only have p1000 for now, the p2000 is delayed. in short, if you can bare the bigger and heavier(p1 is quite heavy already to be used as a tablet so do bare in mind of a 2.5kg tablet) then the x360 is worth waiting for, but p1 is available right now.

    Lisa why didn't you mention another huge advantage of going with this laptop versus the X1 extreme??? The Xeon processor option. The Xeon processor is a huge step up from the top I7 available in this unit. You focus on the graphics difference but for us security professional the Xeon option is what made me go with the P1 versus the X1 extreme.

  • @gee766
    @gee766 5 лет назад +2

    One thing of note is that the 8850H can be overclocked to add 400MHz across all six cores, which the 8750H cannot do. This makes it a 0.5GHz difference across all cores when boosted, which might make the price difference a little bit easier to swallow. This even blows away the Xeon E-2176M (minus the extra cache) which drops down to 4.1GHz all cores vs 4.4GHz all cores on the 8850H.

  • @drmindriot
    @drmindriot 5 лет назад +1

    Bought this machine and returned it. Thermal throttled with several cores sitting in the very high 90s. The fans and the dust shield produced a horrible and annoying noise as well. Some users have removed the dust shield to lessen how annoying it can be. Think of a high pitched shrill/blowing sound that at first makes you think (hopefully): "...this is... cool..." but eventually, it breaks you down and you want to turn it off. Even at idle the fans would kick up here and there to sing you the song of its people. The 4k panel also appeared to be stuck on to the chassis instead of encased by it which I thought was odd and some users reported shifting. Almost as if the 4k panel was an afterthought or it was somehow too big for the design, who knows. Finally, the soft touch material had uneven bumps in it. You couldn't see them but you could feel them if you ran your fingers across the body. Besides those things, which unfortunately for me where deal breakers, the laptop was solid and I really wanted to keep it.

      In the UK at this price point one gets 3 years return to base which means they will make an appointment to come to your home/ office with all the parts and repair on site.
      Understand in the US may be slightly different
      No visits to Genius Bars filled with people not fixing but pushing new product

    • @VhudziJena

      @@kalsing Function over form I think P1 with the heavy duty processors for that CAD lifting. Also this P1 thing certainly seems to have greater memory flexibility
      The X1 series P series there seems to be little in the actual dimensions of the device but in pure horsepower that P1 could leave my X1 standing at the lights.😅😅
      The one thing I wanted from my X1 was the built in 3/4G capability as I sometimes go places with no WiFi and I don't know if the P series are mobile network capable
      Also the P1 seems to have greater screen real estate i.e. thinner bezels

    If you're thinking about getting a Quadro. The question isn't the performance, it doesn't matter what your workload is, it will not be faster than a GeForce equivalent. The only exception is memory in higher end models for if you have massive models. It's the warranty and the amount of testing the drivers go through. The question is, how much money will you lose if you can't use your laptop for a day or 2. If you're a student or hobbyist don't bother with the extra money, just get the X1 Extreme.
    Addendum, someone mentioned 10-bit color, if you must have it, you need the Quadro, but if you're not sure the default assumption is you don't.

    Thanks for all the reviews! I used your channel to decide on a new laptop. Your no-nonsense style is greatly appreciated. I bought a Lenovo X1 Extreme Gen 2 and so far I love it. A couple things to note: The X1EG2 only supports single-sided m.2 drives. I tried a double-sided drive (a drive with chips on both sides) and there is simply not enough room for the chips on the back side. I assume the P1 might have different m.2 slots because you can order it with 2tb drives from the factory. The Intel 7600p series of m.2 that they use are all single-sided except for the 2tb version. Also, the Intel 7600p series are all Self-Encrypting drives. For me, a laptop has to be secure against theft (I travel a bit) so this is important. The drive is ALWAYS encrypted, you only have to enable it using software. I tried the free solutions and they simply didn't work for me (SEDUTIL), then I found WinMagic SecureDoc for $100 which works well and is easy to use. I bought another 1TB Intel 7600p drive for the other bay and I'm looking forward to having massive, secure storage on my daily. My custom built-to-order X1E took about 10 days to get directly from China. I also found a Thinkpad Workstation Dock used on Amazon for about $200. It's working well so far. Thanks again, your reviews were instrumental in my search. It's such a crowded market now with so many buzzwords, even for a tech junkie like me it's hard to wrap your mind around everything.

    I find that while the chip temperatures are under control and it doesn't throttle, the user contact surface temperatures on mine are very often uncomfortable, mostly while plugged in, even if I'm not pushing it. Granted there's 6 cores and a Quadro P1000 in there, but even if the dGPU is not active and I'm not doing much, it can run hot to the touch when plugged in, sometimes on battery too. Maybe that's a con of the rubberized surface?

    Architects engineers and interior designers are the sector the laptop market long hasn't address, and this ThinkPad P1 is seem the closest answer for us - almost! Hey Lenovo we are convinced by the spec which finally matched our need to do CAD & 3D modeling BUT don't you remember we input dimension A WHOLE LOT? without a numpad just makes us feel like handicap during the workflow! (It's ture) I can't stop wondering for weeks before sleep why you guys don't include a numpad in this P1 with architects and engineers as its targeted customers in mind but included in the lower end P52s which would be bought by personnel like managers of architects and engineers, and these managers are the breed only open and view CAD files but never actually do the CAD work. Now I am done with all rants expressed, it's time to accept the fact that once I bought this P1 and place it on my lap with my legs crossed like how you would sit in coffee shop, I would have to use blue tack to stick a ugly portable numpad along the blank space right side of the keyboard which probably would block the fingerprint scanner... ohh my

    What a difference vs a MacBook, no glue, no everything soldered on board, upgradability, slight better cooling and the legendary reliability and service of Lenovo/IBM. I switched from PC to Macbooks long time ago (mostly for mac app development), now I back to PCs and great rediscover. And what a difference working with intensive 3D apps (Blender mostly). My macbooks now are most time gathering dust. Also two of my macs (in good condition and not bad processors) are now "legacy" and no longer official updates (I have no time to digging with Mojave enabler patchers). So beautiful paper weights.

    Just one caveat, and the main reason i went with P1 over X1. P1 has a propper 10 bit display that's supported only by Quadro cards. X1 has "phony" 8+2 bit display running off 1050 max-Q. For my color correction and photo editing work i took the P1 and loving it (compared to Aero15x 4k panel i returned to get this one)

      @Patrick You're correct. According to Lenovo's site itself, the description even says "15.6” 4K UHD HDR (3840 x 2160) IPS multi-touch, anti-reflective / anti-smudge, 400 nits, 100% Adobe 8+2 color depth with Dolby Vision™" so it's definitely 8+2 as you said.

    Right now sale on P1, i7-9750H, OLED, 32GB DDR4, 1TB SSD, for $1745 (discount code THINKPADSALE). I've been waiting on Razer Blade 15 or Macbook Pro 15 to go on sale, they are double the price for a similar configuration. Should I pull the trigger on the P1? No gaming, primarily business/grad school projects and some light Photoshop. Thanks for your advice.

    Listening to both your posts on the extreme and the PI, you did indicate that the thermals on the Quadro was quite a bit better, reaching in the 80's centgrade at the most, while you indicated the extreme with the 1050ti would reach to the maximum of a 100, which is not slightly cooler, but quite a bit cooler.

      @@GTGeorgeW a lot of my friends and colleagues told me the p1 is better for video editing. Also, this was the first review that said a geForce is better (@12:32 her words were a little jumbly so I couldn't tell if she agreed or not). I've used both graphics cards before, and it depends on how intense your projects are. if you are doing a little video editing and more gaming i'd say GeForce so you would save a few bucks and have a better gaming exp.
      If you're doing stuff that involves big renders and 3d stuff or basically any design software and gaming isn't a priority quadro is the way to go. Now, the quadro isn't bad for gaming, it just wasn't intended for that use. But, unless you're a big gamer you might not see the difference much (:

    for those who have still laptop and not moving and this means connected to wall all the time, the best workstation is MSI 16L13 (more known in USA by eurocom tornado f5(w)/f7(w)) which could house 9900K(make sure to check delide+repasting with grizzly+premabios) and quadro p5200 and 64/128gb ram 3000mhz and 4-5 storage options (3 m.2 nvme and 2 sata )
    yo may order p870tm with 9900K and it has 5 displays option to choose and swap the GTX card with Quadro ones too.

    I'm looking for a laptop that would do these things:
    Gfx card for light gaming
    Tablet 2-1
    1080p
    Battery life higher than 8 hours
    Greater than 14 inches
    Semi upgradable Storage/memory
    Touch screen
    Backlit keyboard
    Weighs less than 5 pounds
    Keyboard not detachable
    Bluetooth 5.0
    Would be nice to have HDMI input/output

    "Times have mostly changed, for the better" maybe. Certain sacrifices are definitely not worth it on this P1, the lack of full range I/O, VGA (sort of forgivable), ethernet (unforgivable). The keyboard layout is also too different.

    benchmarks indicate that P2200 is similar to 970M in gaming not 1060 but that's not the point of the card anyways.

  • @llynellyn

    "I don't know why they bother with this anymore" - The reason is that unlike a USB network adaptor the propitiatory dongle isn't an add on device it's an extension for the NIC built into the laptop. Lenovo use this dongle on laptops that are too thin to have an RJ45 port (IMO it would be better if they used an expanding RJ45 port like some others) so that the laptop can still have network built in. One obvious advantage of this is that you have the laptops MAC printed on the box, so it can be ready in SCCM/etc before it even leaves the stock room.

    I used to use a thinkpad before switching to Mac but I wonder about the longevity of this thing if you spec it out and spend $3,500. Does it get sick and crash after a couple of years? Well, that’s my experience with Windows, anyway. Seems like it would be good if your company bought it for you.

    I had A Dell Precision 17" about ten years ago. This one is less than a third the weight of my old Dell, and a lot more powerful. Lisa, did you say the screen size of this Lenovo? If so, I missed it. I'm still doing well with my 1st gen X1 Yoga, but if I were looking for a larger, more powerful lappy, the Lenovo with the number kbd would get serious consideration. Thanks for another great video.

    If you can afford it, its potentially pretty darn awesome, you can get it with 4Tb storage, 64GB M.2 NVMe ram, Intel Xeon CPU and the 4k super colour accurate monitor but wow does it cost a lot. I think if I won the lottery, this would be one of the first things I would buy.
