This is a masterpiece! What an amazing device - it has everything one might want. I just bought the Yoga Slim 7 Pro Gen 6 (16" AMD) which is very similarly specced but more than twice as cheap :D I am coming from a venerable Thinkpad T430 so I hope my next machine after the Yoga to be a P1/X1 Thinkpad! Thank you for reviewing these niche but magnificent machines! :)
Excellent display, port selection and webcam quality! The internal 🎤 is decent, not bad. I also like the fact that you can upgrade the internals as well! Excellent Andrew!! 👍👍😁
Do you think one ARM processor will be soon implemented in a Lenovo P1 model or Extreeme X1 model - Windows ? Second point ... Can you run the novabench meter in this P1 and post the result here ? Tks
lenovo looks deceptively cheap compared to dells but when you start adding workstation quality components the price balloons back to normal. to a point where the only real different is the design/eye candy/IO ports.
They need to make these workstation laptops thicker while still keeping the same design language as the X1 extreme for cooling. Just make them pretty and thick lol.
@@andrewmarcdavid I ordered the X1 Extreme last week which they cancelled this evening saying stock had run out (grr). Seeing the review you did of the X1 and the comment from Tango Down above, I'm wondering if I should just get the P1 and spec it with the Quadro T1200 - I don't play games, as long as it's fast enough to play 4k video and work quickly with KiCAD I'd be fine - allegedly the TDW of those is only 18 watts?
Hello Andrew I am looking for a nice laptop to buy that is good for work and maybe gaming.. Am thinking about hp envy 15 2021, please i need your opinion, because am a little confused...
Dont even bother right now. Wait time online says 4-7 days, but it is really 2+ months. Some wiaiting even longer. Just get an XPS if you need something before mid 2022.
Nice PC. Port selection excellent. Like the easy access to the insides for user upgrades. For a mobile workstation or any PC 15 inch or larger this should have a full size tenkey on it. These manufacturers should offer two iterations of these units one with a tenkey and the other without. This way they can satisfy both camps of users. Now one can use the argument about the additional cost of doing this but this is already costly. The 1080p webcam was nice and clear but the microphones on this sounded badly muffled. Lenovo needs to work on this especially for the price one is paying for this. I noticed near the end of this review when you are holding this up that this is somewhat a fingerprint magnet. Also noticed when you had the item up on the cdw website the availability is backordered and CDW cannot guarantee and in-stock date. Something to be aware of if ordering this from them. Great review as always.
The touchpad on this thing is textured! Horrendous to use, at least for me. Makes an annoying rubbing sound EVERY SINGLE TIME I MOVE A FINGER OVER IT, quite disturbing my work-flow. I've placed plastic over the pad for a smoother feel, but of course that doesn't do use of the touchpad justice. How do I get a smooth glass touchpad? Or, is the textured surface a mere sticker that can be peeled off like in some older ThinkPads? Please let know...I don't want to risk peeling it off if it will damage this expensive machine. And yet, here I got an expensive machine, and can't use it as is without getting very annoyed by the ceaseless ill feel and noise. Help.
Great Video. One additional thing I would like you to add is, comparison with alternatives is the same price range. I know it might not go well with companies when they don't have a good product, but as audience, I am unable to know whether it is worth the price.
Disaster!! Can't get any support! Email support but never gets an answer anywhere! Have so many awful problems with my P1 Gen4 so it's embarrassing! I now hate my brand new computer due to all the problems! Obvious quality problems, color missing on keyboard buttons, fans jerking, white spot on the screen, battery life max 4h, longer battery life on macbook 15 "from 2011, bios updates that kill usb-c / TB4 ports, bluetooth problems, fan problems, sleep mode don't work properly (hot even though led is fading), usb-chime sounds al the time. Fresh windows 10 install with all drivers updated. Catastrophically Embarrassing!
@@JP-pq9xi Yeah, but only some ThinkPads have the proper legendary keyboard, while Lenovos usually struggle in mediocrity along with the rest of the laptops.
The keyboard is the WORST. I mean it is awful!! Definitely not "ThinkPad" feel nor quality anymore. The keycaps are flatter and feel thin and cheap. You can feel what is underneath them. The spacing between keys feel narrower and the overall typing experience is just bad. What a shame for such an awesome machine otherwise and with some tweaks to the power profile, I average ~8hrs on battery doing moderate work with the 11850H, A3000, UHD+ 600nit model
If you want MacOS, get the M1. If you need to run Windows software that needs certified drivers, get this. Unless you actually need those certified drivers on the GPU, or maybe ECC RAM, this is not a device you should get. These devices are kind of for completely different applications... Would be kind of pointless to compare, honestly. But if you're talking about raw CPU performance, the M1 will mop the floor with this in 99% of scenarios. It just doesn't have the horsepower to keep up. But if you need a Xeon, ECC and certified GPU drivers, you need em.
@@mikolobabz yes and no. It's a workstation, but it's a workstation not because its powerful, but because the drivers and chipset have special features that make it more compatible with certain programs. One example is CAD. In SOLIDWORKS and CATIA, you may have a consumer grade GPU that has way better specs than a workstation GPU (more CUDA cores, faster clock and more memory etc.) But it will almost certainly perform worse than a similar or even worse spec'd workstation GPU. This comes down to driver support and optimisations. Can also be seen in stability. Xeons are made to be rock solid stable (one of the perks of ECC too). The M1 machines may well outperform this in raw horses, but with those specific programs where you need that driver certification or those Xeon chipset features, the M1 will not be as good or straight up won't be compatible. You can use the M1 machines for a whole bunch of stuff including photo and video editing, coding, general productivity. Whatever you want. 99% of the time it'll perform great, until you need that specific support from workstation grade hardware and then it won't be as good as this.
Mic audio is an expensive joke and general audio way behind Dell and Apple. Build quality is too 'gappy' in this price range and continues Lenovo's trend of slackness in quality control. Thermal control and throttling are sub standard and I got rid of mine after giving it a fair chance. We are in danger of just accepting low standards.
Yes you can charge it through the USB C ports, but you need a 100 W USB C charger (90 W may be enough to make it work).
Thanks for the clarification
Does Lenovo actually offer such a USB-C charger? Most of its docks don't also seem to deliver such power either.

Microphone is pretty terrible based on the video. Sounds like he is a frog.
There is also RTX3080 Max Q model of P1 that has the same vaper chamber and mother board.
Waiting for your upcoming in depth review on P1 Gen 4
Which one is better this or Extreme Gen 4?
I tried. USB C charging works fine with Dell Thunderbolt Dock - WD19TBS. It’s 130W.
Could you plz review the mic quality again in the full review as well as the trackpad
From what I can tell the P1's with a3000 or 3060 and higher have vapor chamber
Really appreciate your work Andrew, always interesting and accurate!

Thank you for the review! Do you recommend this or the XPS 17 -9710 for best all around use?
İs it possible to change or add a new graphics card on thinkpad p1g4?
Great review, thanks Andrew! Can’t wait for mine to ship. I went with the RTX 3080.
Never understood why everyone isn't fully in love with the trackpoint
I'm definitely more comfortable with a proper trackpad vs track point but I like thinkpads anyway.
When do you expect to have the full review available? Thanks

Lenovo is offering some pretty steep discounts right now on the P1
Awesome
I love to see 16inch laptops
It doesn't come with the LAN adapter
Strongly considering this laptop. However, when trying to "build" it on the Lenovo site, I couldn't find the 5G option......am I missing something?
It’s there. Only if you choose higher cpu it will remove automatically the options to select 5G.
I have my laptop!! but you my friend keep it interesting enough so that I want to see what else is out there Great job Andrew !!!!
Just got the P1 G4, trackpad lower and upper buttons are mushy and the tactile feedback sucks. Returning the laptop due to this.
Thank you for the update. Did they report that its a quality issue or its how they are
They need to make these workstation laptops thicker while still keeping the same design language as the X1 extreme for cooling. Just make them pretty and thick lol.
Notebook website said the same thing about the weak CPUs due to not enough voltage being put through...
Have they fixed the thermal throttling?
Will test thermals shortly.

which reading of black level is considered good... E.g 0.38 vs 0.24 which is more black here ?
Lower is better. Both are excellent scores

Perfect except the audio quality for the mic

A 14" P1 would be great - with xeon, 2k or 4k touch, wwan, 64/128GB RAM
They did the p43s, but they haven't continued it. It also only had the lower end GPUs
i bought it for trading, excellent and super fast
Can the slot for 5G module be used for the third SSD? lol...
