I have been a graphic artist for over 20 years and in the last year i started painting again. I realized that this is what I enjoy. Getting messy, with my hands dirty connecting physically to my art. On my journey I asked myself the same question you have. Your video resonated with me so much. Why am I making art? Somehow my soul needs its. It's part of my makeup. What I paint is another question. And changes day to day. It just makes me happy!

I needed to hear this. I think my problem is that I like so many things, so many approaches, so many colors and textures and application methods that I am lost. I DO know that painting landscapes and flowers they way that they appear is no longer doing it for me. I am competent and render things well, but I want to show more of how I feel about the landscape, the energy in it... I get frustrated when I "fail" in that and think I need to try a new approach, so I jump from trying one style to another and never finding myself. My other challenge is that I don't have a lot of money to spend on materials, so failures feel like a waste of money. Nor do I have a place where I can make a mess (and I really think that would help). I have got to loosen up and let go.

I really recognise myself in what you say. When you said about trying all sorts and losing yourself that way, I do that! Not much help but you're not alone. What I will say, having reflected typing this, is that in whatever I do, sometimes I will find a sweet spot where it just feels so pure and so from me, but it's trying to stay in that zone or figure out what it is that allowed me to get to that place!

I’m so grateful to Facebook as they led me to you and I love your videos and how you share this love. This message sparked my Why which I’ve never been able to find & it has honestly surprised me as I’ve been painting on and off for 20(and then some) years. Thank you Louise. Very special.

I have trouble expressing my emotions and I have found painting is able to get it out of my head. Abstract art is perfect for me as I love to layer. The layers walk me through my emotions and I am able to let go. Art is beautiful ❤

This is a great reminder to always follow your own heart and not what others suggest.
I paint in a similar fashion and my whole painting process brings me joy daily. I am in the process of finishing paintings that have been sitting for a long while so I can get them all photographed and live.
I still have family members that are trying to convince me that I need to be painting this and that and in these colors bc that's what people want. I had to explain that is NOT what I want to paint, and that WILL show in the end. If I have to paint something I hate painting, I don't want to paint. Defeats the whole purpose! I was actually feeling guilty about feeling this way, like maybe I am just too confident in myself that I will succeed at what I have been working so hard for. But your video has confirmed that I'm thinking completely clear on this matter. Thanks!

I started as an Interior Designer in 1969 after a major in Art in college, went to architecture school from 1972-74 & those influences finally sunk in with one "Ah-ha" moment. All of those years of drafting, designing spaces, rooms, furniture, etc.... now I put those pencil lines on my pastel paper to get me started, and then who knows where it will lead me, but that seems to work for me, especially since I can't put as many layers down as those working with paint. You inspire, Louise.

This so interesting that this came out today. First, I want to say that I don’t have any blocks about pleasing others or selling my artwork. I just paint for me. My paintings seem to be very busy and I have really been trying to figure out how to bring more calmness into my work. I had some paintings on the go and they were very busy. A few days ago, I just started painting on one of them and it is now mostly shades of gray and white with some places of busyness showing. I wasn’t sure where that came from so I spent a few days looking at it and thinking about what it was all about. It is definitely not a finished painting but I think it does express me. I think the busyness is about my always showing my emotions and my crazy busy mind and the calmness reflects my life. Does that make sense? Who knows but that is where I am with it right now.
