SO happy to see another one of your videos! You are the best art teacher on the internet, and your gel plate work is absolutely BEYOND. Thanks for lighting up our (collective fans) days! 🎉
fine art student at uni here. I have never known art block like i do right now. I'd made so many gel prints with no sense of direction of what to do with them afterwards. but omg your videos are an absolute saint. keep up the good work man. youre inspiring more people than you think.
We're absolutely interested Mark!! Just love that you share all your experiments and enthusiasm either us. If really spurs me on to play. Thank you! Again...!
You have the most innovative uses of the gel plate on RUclips. Those of us who have watched you from the beginning recognize your techniques when other artists use them. I always mutter, “You got that from Mark!”
That's very kind, and thanks for sticking with me and supporting. If others are using the techniques, then all good. I only ever started this to channel a bit of energy following a tough time, stumbled on a gel plate then it all took a turn! Strikes me the gel plate is a bit of an untapped resource with no real 'tradition' in it's use, so it's a great tool to investigate. if my investigations spur others to do their spin on it then great, what RUclips was always intended for I think : )
I've been taught that encaustic wax and acrylic paint can't be used together - that they won't stick, or be stable and will crack. Have you found this to be true? Over time what happens to the piece?
I had a FLASH BACK watching this video of my time in grade school when a had a wonderful teacher. Who had us outside to collect fall leaves to press with an iron between wax paper ! We also did charcoal rubbings of mortuary stones..you are an inspiration to us arty seniors!❤️
I absolutely LOVE your tutorials. Your down to earth delivery, no pretence, straightforward, thorough explanations and your unique approaches. Thankyou. You always inspire me. ❤
Love what you did. I work in encaustic and love the smell of beeswax and love adding collage as well. You can buy beeswax easily and melt it in an old can and just paint it on with a cheap bristle brush. The translucency of the wax adds so much. Experimentation makes us grow.
Once more fascinating to watch your magic…noticed that the newspapers Candace sent you were partly in German…I have quite a lot of German papers from the sixties, they print very well, and I‘d be glad to send you some - I still owe you Mark! 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🎨🙋🏻♀
Wow! spectacular effect. Love the original photo you transferred. I guess this translucent look might work nicely framed between two glass panes. Thank you.
Another really inspiring video. I bought a large gel plate after finding your Chanel about 3 years ago. I wanted to thank you for your generosity in sharing your discoveries and explaining in such a way you make us feel we can achieve decent results. I've introduced lots of people to your Chanel which is about all I can do to give back. Love your work. Thanks again. Jan from New Zealand
Apparently at least 10,000 people so far are interested lol. Most definitely! Love seeing your experiments & love the translucent effect that wax gives. I suspect you’d enjoy encaustic as you can add layers & create really cool depth.
Do not wonder! I love your videos and have learned so much from you. I'm am a retired teacher artists I Miami USA and now art is my main occupation. Keep on sharing your knowledge and talents. Thank you ❤
I am always so excited when I see you have posted a new video!! You are so generous with your ideas and explorations - thank you SO much for being awesome
Brilliant! so much easier than encaustic. Just one question: What do you do with those collages now? How do you keep them? Mount them on another substrate? Can they go in a sketchbook?
Super cool process! I've always been fascinated with the look of wax in encaustic paintings and collage -- the depth is fantastic. Thank you for another great video!
So EXTREMELY happy to see a new video 🥳, I've been hoping you've just been blissfully busy! At any rate, as usual... 🤯 Amazing techniques! Thanks for sharing - take care!
I'm having some artist friends over tomorrow to do some gel printing. Will definitely turn on this video for them as inspiration! I remember when I first stumbled across your videos. The work you were doing was way above my skill level but now I understand almost everything you make. Much love from Texas.
OMG, This is fascinating. You have inspired this old fossil of a gal. I love this technique and your lovely way of teaching. I will be hoping to see more of your experiments and checking your other vids. TY from upstate New York. (72yo Canadian hippy living in the states) xoxo
Hey Mark, simply genius! I LOVE everything you do! But this just gets my wheels spinning. I've already ordered the wax. Thanks for your generous content!
Mounted in glass backed frame would be cool..i use bees wax that i have for my new bee hive boxes...it comes in tiny ground up pieces..i have crock pot i use to melt it in with a brush...lol
Definitely interested! Collage is an early technique for my students to explore but combining the wax and geli plate image transfer techniques will be really empowering for them and their personal skill development
Wow! What a cool idea!! I've played around with doing a little encaustic and it is fun - makes beautiful work. But it comes with its own mess of issues. I've also played around with putting cold wax on finished pieces. But this! Man, this idea just opens so many doors. Thanks for sharing!
That was very inspiring - thank you. I do some encaustic work so I was thinking of warming the wax and painting it on. Hopefully, won't completely wreck my piece.
This is brilliant. You're inspiring! That blue patch on the backing paper looks like it's part of the composition 😃. As you moved the collage, it stopped and started being part of it from the perspective of the video. That wax technique looks wonderful and the translucency is very cool
Your art is amazing! Your process of experimentation is fascinating! Ditto to all the other comments below! You have the best art instruction out there.
I loved seeing this! I recently tried this with a single ply of napkin, which I stamped a bird on, shaved candle bits, and did this process w resistant paper/iron. It turned out great and was fun. I never thought of doing it with collage, so will give it a try. Thanks! Loved it.
Stunning and brilliant, as usual! The idea of coating in wax, in general, was not new to me. But this technique for achieving the result is SO much tidier and quicker than melting a whole pot of wax and brushing it on ! ! ! I LOVE this! The technique is so very well-suited to your layering methods and style, but totally adaptable to others, as well (rather like more-traditional encaustic technique has always been). I already have ideas for modding this approach, and I can hardly wait to see what else you do with it. The product is gorgeous! I love the subtle interplay of the layers, and I can imagine that IRL the wax adds some amazing depth and surface richness, too. You never did mention or focus on how the NeoColor behaved in the wax. Did it spread? Meld with the surface? I'm really curious to know about that! Thanks again, as always, for sharing your brilliance with the rest of us. You advance the progress of all of us in making art! (Sorry about all the ! ! ! . But I am exceptionally enthusiastic about your last two videos. You continue to raise your own bar, and then neatly clear it with room to spare. Keep doing what you do!)
I’ve waxed pressed leaves, both dried and fresh, and glued with pva to a collage. Guess I could have used the wax instead of pva ! Thanks for this interesting video. The wax preserved the fresh leaves also. Still ok after 3 years.
Wow!!! Mind blown! I have always loved your experiments, but this one is by far my favorite because sealing my pieces and struggling with wrinkles and buckling with certain adhesives has driven me nuts. Now, I am going to try this technique for sure. Thank you so much for this awesome tutorial, any idea how you would frame/finish/hang something like this? I'd love to figure out a way to show the translucency. Maybe in a floating frame?
I love this process!! Thank you so much. I’ve subscribed to your channel, as I have a feeling that I’m going to be inspired by your content. Thanks again.👍🏻🥰
You have no idea how helpful and inspiring your videos are. Thank you so much.

It you use melted wax on paper you can use them to cut out stencils for your gel plate.( Printmaking class tip.) Nice video, thanks!
nice tip, thanks
You're the best art teacher on RUclips! ❤❤❤
: ) cheers, very kind
I'm interested! I'm never going to do this but I love watching other people work through their creative process. Inspires me to take some chances.

Lovely piece, Mark! Wax is very versatile, it seems!
Brilliant! so much easier than encaustic. Just one question: What do you do with those collages now? How do you keep them? Mount them on another substrate? Can they go in a sketchbook?
Brilliant! you manage to answer my questions just before I ask them! All power to your curious spirit. Thanks for sharing.
Fabulous idea! Great way of adding transparency to your layers.
