The Interrogation Room - The Reid Technique - the fifth estate

- They were just witnesses to a murder, pressured by the police to change their story until the wrong man was jailed for a crime he did not commit. Linden MacIntyre takes you inside “The Interrogation Room” with disturbing police videotapes that reveal an investigation gone terribly wrong.
In a fifth estate exclusive, we show how Peel Regional Police used this controversial method to convince, not suspects, but several murder witnesses, that they had not seen what they thought they had. Witnesses were berated, threatened and held for hours until they told police what they wanted to hear. We show you these tapes and exactly how the police built an entire case that sent an innocent man, Eric ‘Action’ Morgan, to prison for more than 3 years, charged with homicide. See how a night that started out as a small birthday party ended in murder with bystanders manipulated by police until they lied.
It’s a tried and tested police interrogation technique that often results in confessions from crime suspects, sometimes whether they’re guilty or not. This method, known as the Reid Technique, has come under fire from critics over the years for eliciting false confessions. In “The Interrogation Room,” police use this technique on bystanders, not suspects and send an innocent man to jail.

Now imagine how many more people are sitting in prison for NOTHING.....
@Elmer Pacheco - 70%?????? That's just utter rubbish.
Just 1 is too many. But a million aint enough for these lowdown thieves in blue.
@Elmer Pacheco So sad, yet true all too often. That thin blue line is a bulletproof shield of protection for just one side who get to hide behind it's opaque but transparent surfaces 😔
Exactly
Sad but true 😒
all of these problems occurred because most of these people FORGOT the golden rule and that is: DO NOT SPEAK TO POLICE.. REMAIN SILENT. DO NOT EVER LET THEM ENGAGE YOU IN CONVERSATION.
tom dinny that is not the Golden Rule. Do unto others, as you want done to you!!
Even if everyone can ask for a lawyer, they should NOT have to. It is sad when cops become worse than the criminals.
Yep,those 4 little words," I Want A Lawyer."
@@RosannaMiller
Cops are criminals...they are even paid with stolen money.
Yeah that’s the golden rule if you are under arrest. Not if you’re a witness. This technique is not supposed to be used on a witness. This technique isn’t even recommended anymore, it’s been outlawed in some states.
@@RosannaMiller sweetie, they are!!!!
The cops involved in This case Should get 25 Years in jail, themselves & Eric Morgan shud get financial compensation for his hell!!.... :(
Pure and simple coercion !!!
They will see. Get financial compensation.
Man, this was rough to watch. Just imagine how these men felt having to actually endure this torture. It's sick, just sick.
@Paulo Eclectik Fear of cops, the corruption runs deep and they have the "law" on their side.
This was a difficult one to watch. Such gross misconduct of the police...
mental torture.
No, it's a pack of lies. There are hundreds and hundreds of police interviews on youtube in both Canada and the US using the Reid technique. It's perfectly normal.
look at the two links i sent. two cops in the interrogation. one sexual assault,
The cops should be in jail this is disgusting!
@b4iwascrzy I AGREE with you all the way. If you know you are innocent and they try some nonsense on you..do exactly as you said. am i under arrest? no? then walk out. then go seek a lawyer in case they come after you.
@b4iwascrzy And immediately ask for an attorney, then they can no longer say another word to you!!!!!
So should the production crew and presenter of this show.
absolutely
They are detectives.
Thank you for staying strong and refusing to say you are guilty. That must have been one hell of a decision
This creates the perverse incentive for witnesses not to come forward.
This is terrifying. He should've demanded a lawyer.
When you are confident you did absolutely nothing wrong maybe he thought he didn't need a lawyer...but yes everyone should get a lawyer before speaking to the police suspect or witness of a crime.
The good ole KYMS.
We can get a lawyer here in Canada, but the cops can grill you anyway, also lawyer won't be in room.... Better have strong resolve, and be quiet!
in canada. you have the right to talk to a lawyer. NOT to have one present when interrogated.
At the beginning the narrator says, the investigators have an exceptional record of solving these cases. That's suspect and reason for a federal investigation.
This is the reason we have a lot of inocents in jail.
Never. Talk. To. The. Police.
Exactly. Even as a non-criminal professional, we were taught from an early age: NEVER DISCUSS ANYTHING WITH THE COPS, even if it's just witnessing a traffic accident.
YET they ALWAYS do!!!
firecloud77 unless its to call them a pig.
Rodrick Evans yes.Only if a person has something to hide.Thats why this innocent man was charged with murder.
@Rodrick Evans i want a lawyer
This made me physically ill. Are Canadians not able to sue "the crown?" These cops "went on in their careers??" And this man's life was destroyed?? Did he receive any financial compensation, at least? And then the double whammy that it was Linden MacIntyre's last episode? This whole thing was truly too much to bear! I've been in tears for the last half hour. The integrity of both Eric Morgan and Brian Cox was unimpeachable. Both are truly remarkable men, and the loss of their friendship may be the second greatest travesty of this incredible injustice. The Reid technique should be banned in both the US AND in Canada - like it has been in the UK. This case should be the precedent-setting example of precisely WHY it is banned, so that way, something long-lasting and positive comes out of this ordeal
If the defence had pulled off that caper they'd be in court for intimidating witnesses.
He shud maybe sum one seeing this will help him... God please let him be compensated in every way possible
So now it's 2020. Has there been any compensation made to Eric Morgan?
It’s is now 2021 has there been any compensation for him
its now 2022 has there been any compensation for him?
Imagine how many people are in jail for something they didn’t do....
Maybe send the police to prison for 3 years and see how they feel about it.
Mofriese: You must be a really kind of person. I will take their pension and send them to prison for a longer time.
Those cops would last a day at the most if they went to prison. And that’s being generous
Reid technique is not designed to find the truth
Reid technique is designed to get confessions, regardless of what is true.
Treblaine thats one hell of a technique... lol lets hang Jail over peoples head and tell them fibs and expect what they say after to be truthful... SMH
David McCallum. Research him. Caught by police at age 15 forced into "confession" and convicted of murder, released at age 46 after evidence proved he was innocent... they did the same to his best friend William Stucky unfornatly he was killed in prison before being able to be proven innocent of any wrong doing
loool
@@blockmasoncreditprotocolbc8650
How though? I just can't get it through to my brain that ANYONE would say they are guilty of MURDER, knowing they hadn't done it? Is it weak minded people ? Is it just a corrupt system of threatening jail regardless of if they did it or not, an swaying them to sign the confession for a lighter sentence as opposed to a DEFINITE sentence of more years?
Sometimes, the risks of going along with the abuser are less than those of standing against the version of the truth that the abuser is forcing you to see. Something to the effect of Stockholm Syndrome... It's a survival reaction to extreme stress.
It's sad, they are trying to force this man to tell a lie and that's unfair. That man repeated the very same story for hours.
in the USA. you have the right to have a lawyer present. in canada.. you only have the right to speak to one via telephone
I spent 20 hours in an interview like this once. One of the few times in my life being borderline suicidal came in handy.
+scurvofpcp Sorry but that cracked me up.
+Paul Ne I had a razor blade in my back pocket, so I decided if worst came to worst I would just slit my own throat. That is what I had in the back of my mind between hour 5 and 20.
20 hrs? Was this in one sitting?
It was all at one time . Long and short of it was the army depot I was employed with at at the time felt that anyone with mental illness had ties to Osma Binladin or was a workplace shooter.
I had the misfortune of being on medication for anxiety and someone saw me with the shakes one day after an anxiety attack. Gossip happened and the rumors flying around sounded like something out of TV land.
When I was taken in for questioning I saw base security in the next room and they were "standing by to stand by"
It was a sucky day.
Why didn't you terminate the interview after a couple of hours? Were you not aware of your rights, or was this not an option in your situation?
all the pigs involved should be fired and charged!
the reason why the term pig was created
15:04
I'm not surprised one bit... Police do this kind of stuff on a everyday basis it's truly sad to see this innocent man turned to a murder suspect.
It worked on CW
In England the cops are not allowed to lie to you in interview.
And they never ever do it?
It may be because in England you are guilty until you prove yourself innocent.
But the can lie on the streets an any other time an withhold info in interview! Scum the lot of em!
"The Reid Technique" is used to frame the innocent.
The DA is a servant of the law with a duty & Responsibly to see that justice is served. The DA failed miserably here. This is not justice because the outcome merely served just them
Police Gaslighting.
Please tell me those two interrogators are currently serving prison time in general population.
they _should_ have to serve a sentence of equal duration!
Hell no they get away with this shit it's a game to them
tonyfalca I agree. What they did was horrible and at the very least they should be fired and get lifetime bans for being cops anywhere in the world.
79tazman no, not a game... just a feather in their hat that looks good on their resume... sickening :/
actaully they got promotions for their hard work
So many dishonourable cops in every country.
They were the bullies in H.S.
All! All of them!
This guy is giving all the signs of being honest. Just look at the Russell Williams interrogation in comparison. Horrible policeman and shoddy illegal work.
Agreed. Saw the Russell Williams interrogation x
Black Tarot : Whatever these guys did is Mickey Mouse police work. Detective Smyth is a real professional, let alone the prosecutors and the judges.
Theses officers should be charged. Wasting ppl life
There were three cars leaving the scene who were those people
Don't forget, it's not illegal for Police to lie to you.
That fact is mind blowing. SMH. Can we trust ANYONE?
DON’T EVER TALK TO THE , ALLEGED POLICE UNTIL YOU HAVE A LAWYER, PHYSICALLY WITH YOU!!!
They would lie to their own families!!!
They would and DO lie to their families. They have no moral compass..
They have been lying for 4 hundred years !!! What new...
I volunteered info one time. I didnt need to nor did i realize how dumb i was until a lawyer told me how unnecessary and very dumb I was.
See me open my trap without a lawyer-ever.
Hmm! Worrying to hear that this homicide squad have boasted an "extraordinary success rate in solving murders" if that is the way they conduct interrogations.
Lady Page I had the same thought
Lady Page agree 100%
Success in possible 85% of their convictions
I would want Brian Cox to watch my back. He is a stand up guy and a rock star. Female witness has tons of integrity but the police used her kids. Of course she changed her story then. She is a mom.
Lisa McLean I agree, and you’re a beautiful person, 😘 Salaam!
You must be dating him . You supposed to ride for yours . Dude weak , come hola at me . I’ll show you what a real man look like.. He let his man down, don’t be the next victim
Eric Evans what a loser you are. No one Hollias att you lol...wanker
Lisa McLean Brian Cox is my uncle I’ll let him knows
I'm gonna post this on any and every video in hopes this gets exposure enough that these detectives lose their jobs due to the fact they let 3 cars full of murders run wild through the streets while they charged an innocent man with murder
The minute a cop accuses you of anything, stop talking and ask for a lawyer.
Wow this just goes to show how flawed our Justice system is smh.
+God is the truth Highly blessed I like your channel name.
This is very hard to watch....This good cop bsd cop bull is bullying someone into a false confession.....PERIOD! !!!!
Great story Fifth Estate. This is troubling and scary.. I have lived in Peel Region for over 25 years and to see this is sickening.
To add, I am amazed how many ppl do not know their rights. Like they do not have to stay in a room and talk or request a lawyer!
These cops should be charged with a crime and jailed for their actions.
This Is tragic! Eric, I'm praying you win your law sue to compensate all you've lost ..Blessings Only!
Charge the cops with the murder and forget to have a trial.
Power Corrupts and Absolute Power Corrupts ABSOLUTELY. This is absolutely despicable police work and I can only imagine how many more innocent people and their lives robbed by inaccurate and unjust charges!!! Pathetic!
And people out there that believe a confession is the be-all-end-all of evidence, see how false confessions/statements happen? This kind of shite happen all the time. What I don't understand is how the cops can sleep at night knowing they put innocent people in prison? It's disgusting that they get away with it, and how many people have they done this to?
Nicole Roberts So what, we should throw out all the confessions because of one or two bad ones?
John Monrow That's silly. No, all confessions should be videotaped in full. Ppl shouldn't be interrogated for hours on end with no food or sleep. There should be clear guidelines on how to interview a suspect properly, so that these false confessions don't happen. There should never be an innocent person sent to prison. While that is probably unrealistic, there needs to be several safety nets to make sure that this doesn't happen.
John Monrow lol the troll didnt get the response he was hoping for so he didnt reply hahaha
sheba1sheba1 No, that response just doesn't deserve an answer. We already have guidelines that are too liberal. We need to stop with all this criminal handholding and punish people for their crimes.
John Monrow weird u responded but said it dosent desreve a respons hmmmm
Gang that committed the murder bought police, needed scapegoats...police coerced. all involved should go down and serve custodial sentences.
Never talk to the police without a lawyer ever!!!
mnicaluza : your lawyer (whether innocent or guilty) will let know EXACTLY what they have against you, if anything
Thank you all for understanding what my father went through 🙏🏽
Many of us are disgusted by what happened.
@@gentlegee1976 it was truly a messed up thing 😒
IF Eric Morgan is reading this.. your a souljah. to hold it down for 3yrs+ and not take their deal. Strong will. these cops know they would not stand a chance in the same situation.. Brian you an OG for flippin like that in court.. shout outs to everyone in this case who helped to Free Eric Morgan from a life sentence.
he could have left any moment he wanted to. you do not have to sit there being interrogated. I WANT A LAWYER. I WANT A LAWYER. don't say anything else if you find yourself in this situation. this enrages me.
I do hope Eric Morgan sued the pants off of them!!! He is innocent, lost his career, family and everything. He deserves to collect!!!
wkjeom Morgan filed a $25 million lawsuit against the Peel Police Services Board, the former police chief, and five police officers, including Doherty, who led the investigation.I hope he wins too.
I agree compensation would be well due, but it will NEVER bring back anything that he lost. This simply should have NEVER happened! Prayers with you Eric and Brian!
How did it go?
Victims of extortion (what the state calls 'taxpayers') will foot the bill. They lose nothing for their sinister deeds...at least until the uprising occurs.
I don’t think he’s innocent.
* Notice these two crucial words the officer used when addressing Cox (around 42:00)-? He said, "You're the only person who has STUCK WITH what Eric hopes.. other people..say."* [ Before watching]: There is an alternative to "fight or flight," and it is "freeze." People who have undergone trauma (esp. at an early age) who later find themselves loudly or forcefully accused (esp. by anyone in authority) are incapable of honestly defending themselves, as their minds have switched onto autopilot. The only answers will be agreeable. This doesn't diffuse things, and it's not the truth, but thought and logic are not options when you've dissociated. You will agree with anything, and guess at other answers which will validate your accuser's (mistaken) ideas.. Later, you are only mad at yourself for not FULLY being "there." ~ Such has been my experience.
excellent documentary, how many more can we get? lol
oh also can you do vids on therapist techniques?
Can you not say “this interview is over, I’d like an attorney” in Canada?! This is just terrible.
KokoMagic33 yeh you’re allowed to
Thumbs up for that guy that he managed to stand up against that pressure for so long and fight back for a truth.
Always and I mean ALWAYS demand a lawyer when faced with an police interrogation room.
Always have difficulty in understanding why fellas sworn to uphold the law think that stitching up an Innocent person, blindly disregarding facts and witnesses and leaving real criminals free, think this is the way of justice.
wow! perfect example of pigs in my opinion. I hope this story gets out more so victims can use this to their defense in court
The way she said "Action?" as a question not an answer... I've been coerced to lie before, because I was hounded and pushed til I just wanted it to STOP so I lied... so they would leave me alone. I t wasn't by police... it was a teacher.
A TOTAL DISGRACE
The Canadian's Ultimate Diss: "It's *almost* indecent." BURNT!!!!!! :P
I hate lazy lawyers who try to make a deal on a very weak case. I always argue that cops should not be allowed to lie about evidence because that can trigger a false testimony to explain false evidence which consequential lead to wrongful convictions
Congrats to Linden MacIntyre on an amazing career and this fascinating story.
Oh snap...they broke him. Just when I thought he was going to make it. There aren't very many that could stand up to those tactics as long as he did.
Jeeeze....police interrogations should be subject to legal challenge. I mean it's shameless! They know they're being taped and still they abuse due process!!! Cowboy mavericks. And Brian Cox? You're a hero!!!!
Worst Birthday Ever !!! I’m just guessing 👀🚬
Sometimes I hate how police question witnesses. Does anyone agree with me?
Many of us agree with you.
Where are the so called good cops to come out and condemn this.
Every single one of those cops should go to prison for 3 years see how they like it. Except they wouldn't be innocent.
Excellent content here. Very educational.
United States police and detectives watching this thinking: “these are Canadian police and US police aren’t this bad”, don’t think too hard you’re 100 times worst.
Thank you for sharing. The video or the case touched my heart. I was very interested in The interrogation Room or the Reid Technique when I first time to learn it. Meantime, I think it is very useful. However, after I watched the video, I think maybe any way has two functions. Everyone needs to be extremely careful to do any judgments, especially some professional workers.
You hear that so much. Tell them exactly what they wanted to hear. And the desire to leave.
So tragic, this poor man lost everything he was, his businesses, his innocence, friends and family, public opinion. Those criminal thugs hiding behind a badge went on furthering their careers. Disgusting shame, Eric put his faith in God and He truly sees all. Hope for Eric to recover some beauty n joy in life in the future. What a courageous soul, my heart goes out to him and the other victims of those police.
They trying to put the Jamaican birthday boy in jail for life,, that's crazy how the system destroyed his life
✊🏾God bless so sad! Your reporting will be missed 💕
Who gave them permission to use that technique?! This is why they had solved more cases than usual. 🤮
If I was in the interrogation room I would try to ask more questions than I answer. "My name is John. I politely refuse to answer your questions. Are you detaining me? Why are you detaining me? Do I have a right to leave? Do I have a right to a solicitor?"
TEZ good luck.
Imagine all the people sitting in jail not guilty like this guy. Millions
Brilliant show
I’m coming here after watching the movie “When they see us” based on the Central Park 5. This shows you that Canada also has a big problem with its judicial system, everything from police interrogation tactics, coercion, prosecutors maliciously prosecuting the innocent. These type of injustices in Canada happen more often than people think. I hope and pray that Eric Morgan gets justice and the police along with the prosecutors be held accountable
Google Central Park 5, Murder on A Sunday Morning, Englewood 4, Dixmoor 5, Jeffrey Mark Deskovic, Ford Heights Four, Groveland Four, The Career Girls Murders, George Whitmore, Jr, Harlem Six, Trenton Six, Brown v. Mississippi, Scottsboro Boys, Duke lacrosse case, Richard Jewell, Michael Crowe, Rolando Cruz, Juan Rivera and Norfolk 4 same story bias, criminal, unethical, lazy, corrupt and incompetent police, prosecutor, judge.
Thank u for telling the stories that matter God bless we all oing to miss you
Do not talk to the police. Apparently even if you think you're simply a witness
I have watched loads of police series, but looking behind the door, it's a different field. I was disgusted at the way the police treated not only Eric but all the witnesses in an inhuman mind-bending, physiological beating and cruel tactics to turn a real story into a lie. I am glad that both people we watched being interrogated finally open up in court, that was a game-changer and a good one at that. Keep going, Eric
Every one of those cops that took place in accusing this man should have to do the same amount of time as he did.
after the first 2 hours I'd be getting up and walking out.
Wow. I hope that Eric Morgan is OK now, and that he got the compensation he deserves. What a travesty of justice. My heart goes out to him.
I had to watch this for my investigation class and as the stepdaughter and niece of two police officers, it is upsetting to see these tactics use to lie to get people to lie about crime's. This was upsetting to watch. Glad the guy Eric didn't lose hope and he was proven innocent.
Unbelievable police wrongdoing just to clear a case no matter who goes down for the crime.
Nelson Oliveira yes it shocking but couldnt brian coxs of got up and left the interagation? Either way these cops should be sacked and punished for what they have done.
A guy holding two beer bottles at once is always a bad omen...
Mr Morgan is some tough real human being.
At times the goal of agencies in our world is to live a lifestyle where they can both commit crimes against their "enemies", blame and torture their presumed enemies with the sentence, and claim themselves to be good forces.
Had it gone to plan, it would then be revealed that the murdered man was an informant, and then numerous other crimes would have been pinned on the accused.
Even if you are a Witness. Do not engage, in communication, until you have sought the sound advice of an Attorney.
Who is really safe? May be only rich and highly educated people.
Never talk to the police !! Never open the door to the police !!!
Always love the sunglasses 🕶 inside at night lololol
Has he been compensated for the time he suffered ?
That lawyer is no good ,he was trying to tell his client to say he did it just to end the case....he's just like the prosecution
Mouthy, overtly confident, thought he was tough or being a little punk doesn’t change that Mikey was one of Gods children. A human being.
This is an effing travesty! How TF?! This is criminal!!
Never ever answer questions in a Murder investigation. You don't have too! Whether you live in Canada or the States, you're not obligated to give a statement, but if you do, the police can choose to build a Case Against You and no one else, even if you're innocent. It's not worth the risk just to appear innocent and to prove you have nothing to hide. You are risking your entire life just for answering questions. As soon as the questioning begins, just ask for an attorney; for Canada, just tell them you weren't involved and that you cant answer anymore questions.
Keep this show alive. The fifth estate. Thanks to all who want to see justice done. It's bothering to see officers get away with putting innocent people in jail. It is my hope one day these very cops go to jail.
Good for putting it on tv/internet.
does anyone know the song at 1:43 of the video?
