  • They were just witnesses to a murder, pressured by the police to change their story until the wrong man was jailed for a crime he did not commit. Linden MacIntyre takes you inside “The Interrogation Room” with disturbing police videotapes that reveal an investigation gone terribly wrong.
In a fifth estate exclusive, we show how Peel Regional Police used this controversial method to convince, not suspects, but several murder witnesses, that they had not seen what they thought they had. Witnesses were berated, threatened and held for hours until they told police what they wanted to hear. We show you these tapes and exactly how the police built an entire case that sent an innocent man, Eric ‘Action’ Morgan, to prison for more than 3 years, charged with homicide. See how a night that started out as a small birthday party ended in murder with bystanders manipulated by police until they lied.
It’s a tried and tested police interrogation technique that often results in confessions from crime suspects, sometimes whether they’re guilty or not. This method, known as the Reid Technique, has come under fire from critics over the years for eliciting false confessions. In “The Interrogation Room,” police use this technique on bystanders, not suspects and send an innocent man to jail.

Did he receive any financial compensation, at least? And then the double whammy that it was Linden MacIntyre's last episode? This whole thing was truly too much to bear! I've been in tears for the last half hour. The integrity of both Eric Morgan and Brian Cox was unimpeachable. Both are truly remarkable men, and the loss of their friendship may be the second greatest travesty of this incredible injustice. The Reid technique should be banned in both the US AND in Canada - like it has been in the UK. This case should be the precedent-setting example of precisely WHY it is banned, so that way, something long-lasting and positive comes out of this ordeal

John Monrow That's silly. No, all confessions should be videotaped in full. Ppl shouldn't be interrogated for hours on end with no food or sleep. There should be clear guidelines on how to interview a suspect properly, so that these false confessions don't happen. There should never be an innocent person sent to prison. While that is probably unrealistic, there needs to be several safety nets to make sure that this doesn't happen.

    * Notice these two crucial words the officer used when addressing Cox (around 42:00)-? He said, "You're the only person who has STUCK WITH what Eric hopes.. other people..say."* [ Before watching]: There is an alternative to "fight or flight," and it is "freeze." People who have undergone trauma (esp. at an early age) who later find themselves loudly or forcefully accused (esp. by anyone in authority) are incapable of honestly defending themselves, as their minds have switched onto autopilot. The only answers will be agreeable. This doesn't diffuse things, and it's not the truth, but thought and logic are not options when you've dissociated. You will agree with anything, and guess at other answers which will validate your accuser's (mistaken) ideas.. Later, you are only mad at yourself for not FULLY being "there." ~ Such has been my experience.

Meantime, I think it is very useful. However, after I watched the video, I think maybe any way has two functions. Everyone needs to be extremely careful to do any judgments, especially some professional workers.

I’m coming here after watching the movie “When they see us” based on the Central Park 5. This shows you that Canada also has a big problem with its judicial system, everything from police interrogation tactics, coercion, prosecutors maliciously prosecuting the innocent. These type of injustices in Canada happen more often than people think. I hope and pray that Eric Morgan gets justice and the police along with the prosecutors be held accountable

I have watched loads of police series, but looking behind the door, it's a different field. I was disgusted at the way the police treated not only Eric but all the witnesses in an inhuman mind-bending, physiological beating and cruel tactics to turn a real story into a lie. I am glad that both people we watched being interrogated finally open up in court, that was a game-changer and a good one at that. Keep going, Eric

At times the goal of agencies in our world is to live a lifestyle where they can both commit crimes against their "enemies", blame and torture their presumed enemies with the sentence, and claim themselves to be good forces.
Had it gone to plan, it would then be revealed that the murdered man was an informant, and then numerous other crimes would have been pinned on the accused.

Never ever answer questions in a Murder investigation. You don't have too! Whether you live in Canada or the States, you're not obligated to give a statement, but if you do, the police can choose to build a Case Against You and no one else, even if you're innocent. It's not worth the risk just to appear innocent and to prove you have nothing to hide. You are risking your entire life just for answering questions. As soon as the questioning begins, just ask for an attorney; for Canada, just tell them you weren't involved and that you cant answer anymore questions.
