Iron Gryphon Studio - Ep 51 Dungeon Cages (jails, prisons, hanging cages for D&D terrain)

- Are your adventurers enjoying freedom a little too much? Sick of them just walking around like they own the place? Or maybe a prison break is on the cards? Well look no further. Here are three classic designs for dungeon cages to imprison those pesky PCs. Have one fall from the roof as a trap, or have an NPC taken captive, and the party must break them out. The possibilities are endless.
Made from cheap materials these designs yield a great look to spice up those dungeon encounters.

Even though you stole her grating, Granny says “👍🏻👍🏻!!!!!!!”
SUCH a cool build. You have the rust-look absolutely perfected.
Haha thank you, I do like abit of rust 😬
A skeleton would look awesome in that last one!
It would, and I almost used one, but decided against it because it would have been beyond fiddly 😅 I may at some point take the wood out of the bottom of the cages and place a skeleton in there
A quick comment from one of your patrons: Darice - the manufacturer of the plastic canvas makes it in several hole counts. 7 is the most common and it means 7 holes per inch.I have it in 5, 7, 10, and 15. I also use it to make seives to sift my dirt and sand into various fineness. John H
Ohh Thanks John 😀 that's actually very useful. I'll look into that.
And thank you for your support 👍🏻😊
Nice craft man :) I kinda agree with you on cage doors - whether they're open or shut matters far less than if they're locked or not 😅
I just feel like it's an unnecessary addition when it comes to a model cage. They always look abit clunky and unwieldy and sometimes spoil the look. Also it doubles the crafting time 😅
@@irongryphon True and true man 😅
You've done another great job. I appreciate these scatter terrain videos. Thank you.
Thanks 👍🏻😀 we can never have too much scatter terrain (contrary to what my girlfriend says) 😅
@@irongryphon Your girlfriend might have been talking with my wife. :D
They're on to us 🤣 abort abort
Another great video. Love the dual cage hanger!
Thanks very much 🙂👍🏻 me too actually. And pretty cheap as well, so bonus 😅
your buildings and videos are awesome, and I have used them for my own builds, your way of construction is easy to follow and your eye for detail is perfect
Thank you so much ☺️ you're very kind. I find the little details in a project can really help to immerse the players and the set the feeling of the environment. Thanks for watching
Coooooooool. These are awesome, i love the circular ones the most.
Thanks very much 🙂 me too
All three look great but I particularly like the gibbet! Gonna have to try to find some hair rollers for cheap next time I go to the store.
If you figure out what to do with the rest of the rollers, let me know 😅
Love the second granny grate cages and the gibbets
Thanks dude 👍🏻😀 much appreciated. Granny grating is always a pain to work with because nothing sticks to it very well. So I'm glad I found a method that works by using some photo mount spray followed by black primer
Brilliant. I've found some in grey and green instead of trying to paint it because no primer stuck
I've tried all kinds of primer, and then tried using a clear coat varnish, then modpodge and nothing worked. I find photo mount adhesive spray stays tacky and then when you add the black primer after, it loses its tackiness and the paint sticks to it
the last one looks so amazing. Brilliant idea with the hair rollers!
Thanks very much, and i have plenty left for other projects ...or a home perm 😅
I've had surprising luck heatforming granny grating. Just bend like you want it, using a form to get tight bends if needed, and wave a lighter near the bend. I got a long strip to bend into a cage form this way rather than cutting four separate walls. Of course no paint stuck to it so I abandoned it - going to try your photo spray.
I had also mounted the cage into XPS foam by cutting away some horizontal strips, leaving every other vertical strip, as "anchors" to push down into holes poked into the XPS. Cages built right into the Dungeon tile. Also nice for drain grates - using thick foam Dungeon tiles, cut a square out entirely, then covered the bottom of that hole with thin cardboard, black bombed, covered with grating on top surface. Tile isn't really reversible anymore of course but it looks surprisingly deep and can hold a tentacle or reaching arm or something.
I will definitely try the heating and bending method 👍🏻 getting paint to stick to granny grating is one of the hardest parts.
I incidentally made a dungeon tile like that in a video I made about a year ago 😅 it sounds almost exactly the same.
@@irongryphon cool, I'll sub and look for it
These look so cool! The hanging one is definitely my favourite
Thank yooooou patron lady 😀😅
Another nice video Alan! I like the second cage also. Scale gets wonky when it needs to be playable also. Just like with stairs.
Keep up the excellent videos.
Thanks buddy 👍🏻 yea scale on table top games is so skewed, buildings have to be tiny (scale wise) but doors and windows have to remain to scale because miniatures may stand near them and it would look weird if a 6 foot man was stood next to a 3 foot door 😅
Go on admit - you forgot the doors 😁
Just kidding, fascinating and entertaining guide, I learnt a lot
Awesome work, and thanks for the extended display time at the end. Love seeing the finished product in all it's glory!
Ha cheers buddy 😅👍🏻
Cool ideas, thanks for the inspiration.
No problem 👍🏻 thanks for watching 😀
You can actually get that type of roller in larger diameters that would make easy round cages to put a miniature in.
Yeah I got a few larger rollers on the box, but they looked too big for the scale of the terrain. Not sure what to do with them to be honest 😅
I think all of them were great
Thanks buddy 👍🏻 cages are super useful dungeon scatter, what's a dungeon without some form of prison? 😅 Thanks for watching
Excellent work, man
Thanks very much 😀👍🏻
Some lovely builds. Really creative ways to build these cages. I reckon you could leave the little spikes on to look more barbaric, as a variation.
You could indeed 😀 great idea. Go get yourself some hair rollers 😅
@@irongryphon my Poundland doesnt have them 😭😭😭😭
I found mine in Boyes 😬
I've been wanting to do some of those hanging cages and the hair rollers idea is just genius! Thanks por the tip and the video.
You're welcome 🙂 I need to find something to do with the rest of the hair rollers now 😅
He look amazing Bro!
Cheers dude 🙂👍🏻 thank you for watching
I just love your "style" of building things, the detail and colours just totally fit my sense of aesthetic. I d love to see some LOTR themed build some day since i love the world of middle earth and its not featured that much in builds.
Thanks so much 👍🏻
I will make a note of that, I'm sure I can come up with something 🙂
Nice job Man
Cheers buddy 😀👍🏻 thank you very much for watching
What a cool look on them, especially the second and third one. The rust effect is really on point. I agree, that the spacing of the bars is even better on the second one.
Excellent stuff - as you always deliver! Also - Happy Easter to you and your loved ones. Enjoy!
Thanks very much for watching
Happy Easter to you and yours too my friend 👍🏻🙂
Stylé! As point of interest or just decors, these cages are really cool. When build/terrain meet playability. Love this build! Keep up! :3
Cheers mate 👍🏻🙂 I do like to spice up dungeons with abit of decor
Man your crafts are always so good! Especially your paint jobs, absolutely masterful.
Thanks buddy 👍🏻😀 I always use fairly simple painting techniques, but it's usually enough to achieve the look I'm after
Great cages. Love the hanging ones... I would definitely use those in my game.
Get crafting mate, all dungeons need a cage or two
Very cool builds, I very like your second cage build, you may surely be aware but you can find some granny mesh that are rond so you could apply the same technic for the hanging cages, just saying! Anyway still a really nicejob! :)
Thanks buddy 👍🏻🙂 I don't think I've seen any circular granny grating, I shall have to look
@@irongryphon On Amazon you should find some under the Darice brand.
Trying the last one now great idea
Glad you enjoyed it, hope it works out okay 🙂👍🏻 would love to see the finished project
@@irongryphon just finished the iron cage and made a torture rack wouldn’t mind your input 👍
Absolutely! Where can I see it?
@@irongryphon when ever you want
Ooh I've just seen there's videos, cool little torture rack included as well, looks great 👍🏻
Me: I can't believe he didn't add moss
Bf: he probably will
IGS: and I added moss to the floor using my usual method
LOL
😅 oh dear, I've become known as the "moss guy"
@@irongryphon I mean in your defense, he introduced me to you a few days ago and my watch later for 4 days has been us only watching your vids.
Aww thank you 🙂 glad I could entertain you both for a while 😅
Cool
Cheers buddy 👍🏻🙂
Love the crows nest! Straight out of Willow-)How do you make your washes?
Cheers buddy, it's A mixture of 3 parts black wash, 2 parts brown wash, and 1 part water
The rectangular cages are simple, quick and effective, very nice! But the gallows-tree type... Thats looking perfect! Im only missing Madmartigan from it :).
(Currently looking for hair rollers on Amazon... What did You do to me?)
Hahah don't forget chain if you don't already have some 😬👍🏻
What "light brown" color brand did you use for the wood? The end product was some very authentic weathered wood. Great job.
It was Vallejo "Earth", also makes an excellent dirt colour as you might expect 🙂👍🏻
Simple, Effective, Nice. Great rust! How did you get the ring through the two cross pieces on the top of the cages? Well done!
I Just drilled a tiny hole with a dremel, and used a loop (the same kind that was used on the wooden post that the chain was fed through) 🙂
@@irongryphon it's crazy that it was strong enough to take the stress of the Dremel. All in all, great job!
The Dremel bit cut through the plastic fairly easily, though I was quite gentle and not heavy handed
great work... i don't like the orange you use for rust
Any particular reason? Do you find it too orange? Or do you not like technical paints?
@@irongryphon yah too orange for me, not rust looking. I still think your work is great. I just started making my own stuff a couple of weeks ago and have to thank you for your inspiration.
Fair enough, well thanks, glad I could inspire 👍🏻🙂
Alan, because you only have the one tier of Patreon, is there any way to additionally (or alternately) leave an occasional gratuity?
I don’t know if Patreon has that option.
(Christie T.)
Hi Christie, I don't think patreon has a tipping function, but honestly don't worry about it, your current pledge is more than I could ever ask for and far more than I deserve 🙂
@@irongryphon love that your sub number is increasing though it still should be higher. Your stuff is very classy (in its....evilness?)
Haha thank you, I agree it should be higher 😅
Hello....historic the cage of Louis XI French king 1423_1483
I assume that's the hanging gibbet ? 😅👍🏻 Thanks for watching
