This episode and 26 are Shinji and others' inner world where their bodies and souls become one. They are now looking at each other during the orange juice scene.

6:55 Of course, this rocket is a symbol of masculinity and patriarchy according to Freud.😊

Every perspective explains their inaction in front of what they see as uncontrollable situations.
They see what should in theory be the reason as to why humans / humanity dont/doesn’t live as one individual or as a mental or moral unity. It is our delicious fear and emotions which keep us trapped like EVA traps Shinji.

Here begins the "Freudian introspective psychological" analysis of the characters.

In this episode we see them all looking at themselves as they are, without more masks, without hiding behind Eva.
Shinji IS alone, he feels this way and thinks that everyone has rejected him (they all did in some way), he suffers from severe depression after all the past events, especially after killing Kaworu.
Asuka's strong, self-sufficient girl mask falls and she still cries like a child because her mother abandoned her (suicide), her father and her stepfather abandoned her (they even feared her and decided to be together rejecting her). Her main motivation was to pilot the eva and in the last few episodes she fails even at that.
Rei III has some kind of memories of Rei I and Rei II, she knows that she was just an instrument of Gendo and an artificial human, she fears that she may return to being nothing.
By the way, the souls of the pilots' mothers are inside their evas, Asuka realizes that in EoE and synchronizes with EVE02 before the Eva series attack, and Shinji got some clues when he got trapped inside Leliel ( Shadow Engel)

Thanks for adding more details to characters! We were sure that Asuka's seeing her mother in her evangelion was a sign of her insanity, rather than some sort of realization. Also, Rei III's self-awareness and change of her view on her own existence was a big surprise, because she seemed as a character who would not mind getting back to nothingness more, than anyone else in the show

@@DenverSenpai Most characters have a good development or arc during Evangelion, despite being a "short" show. During the last 10 episodes or so you can see that them all are falling really deep and get severely depressed, even then the final episodes show how much they are willing to be alive.
If you enjoyed the show consider seeing it again eventually, a lot of things will be easier to understand.
