There is the joke going around that the show is better if you are depressed. Personally I tried watching it younger and never got through episode 3 but last year I rewatched it during a time where I wasn't feeling well and this series helped me lot.

I'm around Josh's age, and anime elitists considered me late to the fandom when Adult Swim first aired NGE. *Pardon me* for not buying the whole series on VHS in the 90s when I was 9 and broke. It's not like anyone ever returned the library copies so I could watch it. This was hard to find before AS and streaming.

    • @Virjunior01
      @Virjunior01 Год назад +12

The problem isn't that you're late. Can't blame a kid for that.
The problem is people having no interest in going back to the genre-defining shit that _created_ the modern anime series.
See, some treat it like things were always this way, but they most certainly weren't. Part of the reason we all suggest the common items is because in the 80s and early 90s, anime were mostly OVAs. Especially in the eighties, projects were not guaranteed to finish at all, and weren't often based on manga, so... these completely original works and collaborations were in frequent danger of going over budget or having funding pulled (Evangelion's final episodes), and some were just released completely unfinished in efforts to recuperate _some_ money (even a big name like Shirow Masamune of Ghost in the Shell has his name and designs forever tied to the unfinished Gundress OVA series). *The common names you hear from then are the best projects that actually made it to the finish line, and that's why we knew and shared them.*
They went from short projects like the awesome Project A-ko movies and Bubblegum Crisis's Blade Runner send-ups to more mature original films (Ninja Scroll, GitS, basically anything directed by Satoshi Kon), Ghibli handled the Disney equivalents until Pokémon rolled in just making a cartoon companion to a popular "toy." Sunrise got away from Gundam for once to give us the tight and gorgeous Cowboy Bebop, Outlaw Star fucked with old school Isaac Asimov designs (Asimov was the name of the antagonist in Cowboy Bebop's first episode, too!) And added space magic in a more satisfying way than Star Wars... and in the middle of this golden age was Evangelion, a deconstruction of the mecha genre as cover for a character study and depression, and Trigun, a manga adaptation that bears nearly no resemblance to Yasuhiro Nightow's original work, but is so well done people never really cared. Seriously, the original Trigun manga is fucking *bonkers.*
In a way, Eva was right in the pocket of an age when anime was becoming well known for original works, and could easily approach any genre or feeling without fear. Now, almost everything is a manga or light novel (just call them short stories or fanfic or whatever) adaptation, almost _never_ gets anything more than 12 episodes chunks to continually test and wait and continue to milk the franchise longer, and to me it feels a lot of anime is cynical. No heart, no commitment, and just advertising looking for franchise material.
That's why I think Chainsaw Man has taken off... the idea is fresh. They fuck with tropes instead of using them as a crutch (how many times does something have to be set in a high school before you claw your own eyes out?), and tells a real story. It doesn't try to create a bunch of waifus to sell body pillows later, like the ridiculous Fate series, and instead gives us unique characters with characters and flaws that _matter_ instead of "this is the perky one! This is the _weird_ one! Aren't they quirky?"
So yeah, nobody's pissed you're young. They're scared you won't appreciate the classics, as anime and its fans are very different today.

To be fair the one piece anime was made in 1999 and evangelion in 1995 so it's quite the opposite: is one piece that recycled evangelion voice actors 😂

    A few things:
-The kids in the show are 14. This is actually somewhat important.
-The dub has always been known for being a bit strange, but *no* fans liked the Netflix dub over the original, even with Spike Spencer's odd screams. You are watching the Netflix version, which actually kinda borks things, I think. Ritsuko and Misato sound very similar, but the original has Ritsuko sounding older and more responsible while Misato flips between that and a childish perkiness. This is important to her character and is largely missing here.
-Not a fan of Netflix using Rei's Theme as the outro. The original had multiple versions/remixes of "Fly Me to the Moon" sung by the various voice actresses in different combinations. This is thematically relevant and now lost.

Regarding the Netflix Dub: it is a new dub, done ~10-15 years after the original dub. Some things are changed, including the Outro song being removed (it originally was a cover of Fly Me to the Moon), pronunciation of some words (NERV now being pronounced Nee-erv instead of nerve") and some translations being changed (Shinji being referred to as the Third "Children" instead of the Third "Child"). Yeah, when this came out on VHS in the 90s, the original dub was produced by ADV Films who would utilize the same voice actors throughout a lot of their works. So you would find hilarious familiarity when you reheard their voices in works like Golden Boy, Nadesico and Excel Saga.
Now, in the new dub, we got voices from several other places like One Piece, as well as veteran VA Johhny Yong Bosch.
Many things have been said about the new dub. My feelings are that the translation is closer to the source, yet it loses some of the iconic feel in the first translation. Not to mention the choice to pluralize Child.

Hype to see you guys like it. Definitely a favorite. Might get mentioned but it's an anime original, which while on the surface level seems insignificant, I believe overall is what allows it to be what it is. It can design the pace for the medium of television. Manga adaptations can be done well but are still bound to a plot meant to be experienced with page turns. Eva knows when to cut. A big problem with anime (Which isn't new or anything, but maybe more prevalent) is it being influenced by itself. You can tell Eva isn't just influenced by anime. Ironically not many people enjoy stuff that is so influenced by itself it becomes an insular trope. Makes the stakes feel predetermined and such. Miyazaki was right, anime (for the sake of anime) is a mistake haha

First of all, welcome to the century of EVA✨😆In Japan, "Neon Genesis Evangelion" is abbreviated to "EVA," so we will refer to it that way from the following.
This work is based on the influence of director Hideaki Anno, who became mentally ill after directing his previous anime, "Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water," which was broadcast on NHK, and the psychology books he read while holed up in bed and the books about the esoteric sect of Christianity, "Nestorianism."
Therefore, the "Tree of Life" from the Jewish Kabbalah and the blue flame that flickers on the water (called the Flame of Wisdom in Nestorian Christianity) depicted in the opening caused controversy among fans immediately after it was aired.
The way the subtitles are displayed throughout the film, and the way the three Japanese characters, Hiragana, Katakana, and Kanji, are arranged vertically and horizontally on the screen as a large typography, are influenced by the films of Kon Ichikawa, a Japanese live-action film director. Another thing worth mentioning is that EVA also uses many of the "old characters" that are not used in real Japan, which are used as a method of depicting his unique "alternate post-World War II Japan" depicted in each of Oshii Mamoru's works, famous for "Ghost in the Shell." This is a feeling that only Japanese people can understand, but it is a method that makes Japanese viewers feel the reality of "another possible world."
Sengokuhara, Hakone City, Kanagawa Prefecture, where the setting "Tokyo-3" is located, is a real place. It is close to the foot of Mount Fuji, which is famous as the highest point in Japan and is famous as an icon of Japan because of its beautiful appearance, and because it is a plateau, it was chosen as a place where humans could live even in a world after the water level rises. Obviously, no huge space has been discovered underground in the real Sengokuhara 😅 Also, since it is a tourist destination with plenty of hot springs near the active volcano Mt. Fuji, the GOING MERRY from ONE PIECE floats on Lake Ashi as a tourist boat. Wow, so confusing... 😵
As for the origin of the character's name, first of all, the main character's last name "Ikari" is "anchor" in Japanese, and it is important to note that it is a word related to the sea, which is common to the names of other characters. However, one more thing to note is that "KANJI", one of the means of writing Japanese, is an ideogram, so in that sense, this "IKARI" may have a different meaning from the "anchor" we normally use, even if it is pronounced the same🤯Sorry if Japanese is difficult😅
In Japanese, the pronunciation of "IKARI" also means "anger". The name "Shinji" was given to him by his friend from his school days, Shinji Higuchi, who also participated in this film 😆. Higuchi later served as director under Director Anno on the EVA films, now known as the old theatrical versions, and has become one of Japan's leading film directors, directing works such as the monster special effects film "Gamera," the remake of the special effects spectacle film "Japan Sinks," and "LORELEI: The End of the War," a film about a fictional submarine during the Pacific War.
"Katsuragi Misato"'s surname "KATSURAGI" comes from "KATSURAGI", an aircraft carrier of the Imperial Japanese Navy during World War II. In this way, many of the main characters are named after Imperial Japanese Navy ships during World War II. This is because Director Anno likes naval ships, and is from Yamaguchi Prefecture, the same hometown as Yamamoto Gonbei, the first Imperial Navy Admiral who worked hard to establish the modern Japanese Navy, and Yamamoto Isoroku, the Imperial Navy Admiral during the Pacific War who planned and carried out the first remote attack by aircraft carrier in world history. It may also be related to the fact that he is a member of the first anime boom generation, a fan of the anime "Space Battleship Yamato".
The Imperial Japanese Navy ships are not related to EVA, but you can learn more about them by watching the game and anime "Kantai Collection" 😅
"Gendo Ikari" The name "GENDOU" means "words and actions" in Japanese. Also, a little spoiler, his last name "ROKUBUNGI" before he was adopted into the Ikari family comes from the ship's compass "sextant", but I don't know if such a surname actually exists 😅 There are said to be 50,000 to 60,000 surnames in Japan, so maybe there is.
"Ritsuko Akagi" The surname "AKAGI" is written in different kanji, but it comes from the Imperial Navy aircraft carrier "AKAGI" just like Misato. The names of the early regular aircraft carriers are taken from the names of mountains in Japan. "Katsuragiyama" is in Nara Prefecture, and "Akagiyama" is in Gunma Prefecture. Also, I think it's a coincidence, but the sound "-Gi" that Misato and Ritsuko share in their surnames represents "castle" in kanji, so it may also represent the fact that the two women are like unshakable castles at NERV headquarters 🤔
"Kouzou Fuyutsuki" His full name was probably never spoken in the main story, but his name as a NERV adjutant comes from the Imperial Navy destroyer "FUYUTSUKI". The Imperial Navy destroyers were named after seasonal scenery used in haiku and other things because there were so many destroyers. "FUYUTSUKI" means "winter moon". The name "KOUZOU" means "structure". In other words, "GENDOU"'s "words and actions" and "KOUZOU"'s "structure" are a pair 😁 In other words, as an adjutant, he is in charge of building and maintaining the structure of the organization, and Gendo is in charge of words and actions as a commander. Also, this pair was a master and disciple in the past.
"Maya Ibuki" A girl with short hair who is an operator. "IBUKI" comes from the Imperial Navy cruiser "IBUKI", and the Imperial Navy cruiser's name is also taken from the name of a mountain.
"Shigeru Aoba" A man with long hair who is an operator. "AOBA" comes from the Imperial Navy cruiser "AOBA", which is the name of a mountain and also written in kanji as "Green leaves", and the name "SHIGERU" means "to grow thick", so the naming of this character seems to be a joke in a sense, since he is a supporting character 😅
...I forgot the name of the other guy with glasses, so I'll skip it 😂
And finally, the name "Rei Ayanami" comes from the Imperial Navy destroyer "AYANAMI", which means "waves that intertwine". In other words, it represents the same waves repeating forever. This is a miraculous name that follows the theory of taking names from destroyers, and also represents the reason for REI's existence that will be revealed later 😱 Also, the name "REI" has multiple meanings with the same pronunciation in Japanese, which has many homonyms.Below are some meanings that may be related to the character design of Rei Ayanami. 1: Zero, 2: Spirit, 3: Courtesy, 4: Beautiful, 5: Order...etc.
Sorry for the long post 😫 but I'll come back again ✨👋

Something I don't see a lot of people talk about when concerning Eva, even if you don't find it to be as impactful or creative as most, you should keep in mind the context of its release. There was nothing even close to Eva before it, and most of the things people can say feel "tropey" are either created by Eva, or being actively subverted.

This is one series that I cannot watch without the Jp actors. Of course, there's advantages to watching dubbed, but I would urge Josh to go back and watch key scenes in Jp. If the English dub gets intense, the Jp are mind-blowing performances. The acting is one of the reasons this series is so good.

1:56 I gotta say, I am amazed at how accurate his guesses are about Rei...
2:50 Hah! I always sing along to it too! And just as badly!
6:11 That one gag is responsible for so many fanfics depicting Misato as being a terrible driver, completely ignoring the stuff she did while picking up Shinji. That woman knows exactly what she's doing behind the wheel and no one can convince me otherwise.
9:52 Gendo has been in the top ranks of the "Worst Dads of Anime" for a very long time. If he doesn't top the list, he's usually in the top three. Though the final Rebuild might have changed that.
18:02 There are a number of fan theories about the Angels, and there is what Gainax decided was true about them. None of which is ever touched upon in the series proper. All of it is gleaned from supplemental materials.
23:51 Fun Fact: Rei was supposed to come off as creepy and weird. It didn't work.
25:22 I love that we don't get to see the fight yet. Not entirely, anyway. I love that we spend some time with Shinji who isn't sure how he survived what just happened and is just kinda going through the motions until he gets the chance to lay down and let his mind refocus. At which point, he remembers all of it.
31:00 By the way, that container is labeled "toothpicks". Leading to this scene being labeled, at least to me and my friends, "the toothpick incident".
The "stick around for more fanservice!" thing in the next episode preview is a bit of a running gag. Misato keeps promising it, but never comes.

It's not going to be unless you can identify with one or more characters. If you aren't fucked up or damaged, you won't give much shit about this show.
Also, your age comes in with the mental state... I saw this in 2000/01, at age 18. It was a more volatile time in my life, as well as me going to college for animation, and nothing like Eva had been done before (it was only 5 years old at that point), and is during the "golden age" of mid to late 90s.

Gendo isn't heartless. He is arrogant, sure but he believes that what he is doing will not only unite all of humanity into one being removing all pain and allowing all of us to truly understand each other and ourselves, but will also unite shinji ans himself with his mother. Gendo is very much a "the ends justify the means at any cost, even empathy, compassion, and any sense of right or wrong". Presumptuous in his hubris? Absolutely. Heartless I don't think so
