Inspirational to say the least. My "Homestead " is a 100x100 piece of my sisters 20 acres. They raise a small herd of cows and am so blessed to have it.
I love hummingbirds, last week, I had one fly within two and a half feet of my face, and pause hovering for at least six seconds. I'm not sure if it was curious, or startled 😂
Wonderful homesteading and gardening RUclips channels like this one is seriously the reason I've been motivated to keep growing and going and NOT GIVING UP. Thank you! 🌻
My first big tomato, a Thorburn's Terracotta, ripened yesterday! We ate it plain, just sliced with salt & pepper, so we could savor every bite. Now summer is really here!
Jess said: "Grow Okra." I said: "Yes ma'am." Let me tell you. Amazing. Delicious. Where have you been all my life! I cut it off the plant, nice and tender. You need to keep and eye it because if it's too big, it will get woody. Thank you so much for your knowledge. I found my new favorite vegetable. 🙏🏼
I love it small and tender, too. I love it raw. Of course, some get away from me. I think some get away from anyone who grows okra. I either save those for seed or I scrap out the inside for sautee or soup. I tried to eat just the inside and it's not bad, but kind of a bit of work. Love okra!
@@yeevita large okra are still usable as you said. Some you can cut the end of and the rest is still tender enough to cook regular. My personal favorite is fried whole or sauteed whole or bread, tried and eat it hot out the pan. Barely cool enough to eat. If I'm boiling I soak in milk to get the slime out.
🌻Everything's looking really good! I just can't believe how much you all have done in such a short amount of time! So, I have a pretty yucky, but amazing fix for your hornworm issue. I found out about this about 40 years ago and have used it when needed since with 100% effectiveness. What you do is gather a handful of hornworms and put into a jar and smash them (the yucky part). Then cover the jar and leave it for a few days to begin to rot. After a few days add water (may need to put into a larger container) and spray this all over your tomatoes. It 100% deters any further problems, though with your large area you may need to repeat another time. Anyway, wanted to pass this along and wish you well as you continue your beautiful garden endeavors.
Jess, I am forever changed! I am 53 years old and have eaten tomato sandwiches my entire life. The only difference in your sandwich and mine is that I have never toasted the bread. I was watching some of your older vlogs again waiting in anticipation of my garden coming in. One of those was you making a tomato sandwich. I vowed to try it your way as soon as my big slicers started ripening. Oh my Goodness!!! You changed my life! That was the best tomato sandwich I ever ate! (Of course it's also hard to go wrong with a Paul Robeson). It was so good I didn't just eat one, I had three!!!! 😋
Thank you for being a problem solver not just a trow it out and start over, the world needs more problem solvers. I know personally I learn something from you in every video,🙏🏼🌻
Jess your expressions while in the garden are what homesteading is all about!!! Even though my garden is failing horribly this year I love seeing such success in yours.
Thank you for all of the information you are passing along to us. Can't wait to see this process of finding the antidote. Hope you had a wonderful vacation. It's important to take some time away. I can't wait to see your returning home video of how everything has grown. 💖🤗🙏
Roots and Redemption ha. Really though something with Redemption sounds pretty great, I think you named it. Your garden is beautiful love seeing it all grow. Thanks for taking us along with such transparency and thought.
I agree with your one subscriber with calling it "The Waiting Room", OR calling it: "Overcomer" OR "Redemptive / Redemption". 💝🥰🤗💝 Love Always and God Bless 💕 🙏
Ooooo!!! The Van Gogh Sunflowers are absolutely amazing! Please let us know when Sunflower Steve puts the Van Gogh’s on the market. Thank you for the of your beautiful garden. Thank you also for tasting plants that we probably have never tasted and describing the taste and texture of the plant. That really helps me in deciding if I’m going to plant the same plant in my garden. Jess, you are such a great teacher and not only do you impart knowledge and wisdom, but you also impart joy and enthusiasm and wonder of the world around you. That is one of the main reasons I click on your videos the moment they come up on my notifications. I for one really need as much of the joy and the wonder as I can get. Thank you and God bless you and your family a thousand fold return on all of your efforts.
Wait, wait, wait... hornworms glow under blacklight??? My heart is so happy with this nugget of insight. Those wicked little suckers have been the cause of many many (inexplicable to my husband) tears and a significant level of stubborn determination to eventually succeed. This is why you are my hero!
18:00 Thank you so much for explaining how tomatoes ripen. I've heard the no refrigeration rule for years and had no idea why. It is so much easier for me to follow the rules when I know the reason behind them.
I’m so happy the limelights arrived in one piece 😆🫣 you will love them Jess! I think if you put them anywhere around that greenhouse they will look splendid! Those sunflowers are ❤️💛💚💛! So much beauty in your garden 😍
I had a huge limelight at my new house, and after it bloomed, I cut it back a lot. I worried in June because it didn't rain, and had to water in the late part of the day, but finally in July it has rained hard six days out of eleven.
To my understanding borage is also a very deep rooted plant and draws nutrients up from deep in the soil. It also makes really great compost material 👏
I’ve been trying to find the time to watch this video for days. Thank you for posting this. It’s been a really difficult few days and this is such a blessing to escape for a while into your garden.
I think of it as a "Resolution Tunnel" because you're solving a problem or a "Forbearance Tunnel" because you're handling difficult a circumstance with grace and patience.
“The Healing Tunnel” you could even use the French, German, Italian, etc… for it and make it sound different 🤷🏻♀️ good luck in naming your high tunnels! Thanks for all the great info and the tour 🥰 God bless you as well.
That was the most beautiful video frame with the garden and the ducks in a group behind you. That was magical. Reminded me of my grandmas house and garden when I was a little girl. So Good ♥️ 🦆
We had broccoli coming to a head in the spring when I planted my tomatoes and I had read that those two things were not good to plant next to each other but did it anyway. We had the most beautiful, big broccoli heads I have ever grown and the tomatoes are looking as good as always! I agree that the "do and do not" Pinterest planting "guides" should be taken with a grain of salt!
I can identify with the joy you expressed when seeing the hummingbird. We love them and have been feeding them for many years now, I'm sure we have whole families that return year after year to our feeders. I have 5 feeders and during the summer I have to refill them daily. The issues with what they feed or give our meat supply is horrible, that was one of the reasons that I stopped eating meat all together about 8 years ago. Have a wonderful time on your vacation, looking forward to seeing the garden changes when you return.
I actually clicked to watch the video because your mug of coffee caught my attention and i really liked the look of the mug... but boy, hearing you explain about the toxins in the soil because of the chain of supply... I could actual hear it in your voice how much you care and how heavy things weigh on your thoughts. Absolutely loved to hear your thoughts, thank you.
Your moment enjoying the okra in your garden is the number one thing I am longing for this year that I don't have a garden!!! I am so longing for it!!! I had just finally started to master growing okra in Longmont Co zone 5b I think. They were as prolific as I've ever had them last year. I can't wait to grow them again!!!
That was so funny when you stopped mid-stream and went, "humming bird", it reminded me of a rare child-free trip with a friend and as we drove up to a passing train she excitedly pointed to it shouting, "ooo, chuffa chuffa train!!!" . So funny!
Hi Jess, absolutely love your transparency and your channel. I'm a professional gardener for clients with flower and shrub gardens. Regarding panicle hydrangeas, like the limelights, you will not need full sun in your zone. Part shade is better where it's really hot and sunny. (I'm in zone 5 Massachusetts and mine flower beautifully in part shade here.) Hydrangeas also like consistent moisture so I make sure each shrub gets 5 gallons of water (drip) a week for their first season. I use a 5 gallon bucket with a small hole (less than 1/8") on the side near the bottom. Fill it once a week and let it trickle water the shrub. Put a loose cover on the top of the bucket to keep detritus from clogging the hole or clogged holes will drive you crazy. BTW, I use this bucket watering system for all new shrubs and trees I plant. First season: 5 gal once a week until the ground freezes. 2d season: 5 gal every other week. We're currently in a drought so my 1st season trees are getting 10 gal a week. I've cut my showers to quick ones twice a week so I can water my new shrubs and trees.
As always the many many videos you have put your heart into has blessed my spirit and soul with hope and joy, thank you and blessings shower upon you and your precious family.
I truly believe that my issue with Rheumatoid Disease is directly related to growing up where aerial spraying defoliants & pesticides was common place. I love knowing where my food comes from now & pray our new lifestyle can be a legacy for my grand babies.
Thank you so much Jess for making this a garden tour video! Even though you're all back when you read these messages, I hope you all have a great family vacation!❤️❤️. Everything looks so lush and beautiful there! I know it's lacking rain. And nothing makes a garden grow better than real rain water! But I live in the desert and a lot of my yard is xeroscaped, it doesn't make me miss my old garden up north and the Midwest. The soil there smelled and looked so black and wonderful! It smelled like the beautiful earth that God originally gave us. 🙏🙏🌱🌱. I truly miss that. It's very hard to grow a good tomato here. We don't really have a spring. It goes from icy cold to a really hot summer with lots of wind and dust. LoL. Take care and God bless always 🙏❤️🙏❤️🙏❤️🙏
Grateful to you and Miah for sharing your journey, faith, experiments, wisdom. Continue to generously motivate people to plant gardens. "The Lab" or "The Love Tunnel" just for fun!
The hydrangeas will really stand out near the greenhouse.. Love the dwarf fruit tree idea.. Climbing roses on arbors make great shaded seating areas too...
"Okra...I missed you.." touched my heart. I have 9 plants in contaminated soil. They are still only about a foot and a half tall. I probably wont get any.😕 SO...I will live vicariously through you.🧡🌻
I loved, "do better, whenever you can" and really the whole message at the end. I've been having so much anxiety over wishing I could do more to make the world better, and that helped a lot.
I bought my first seeds yesterday. I even started some cucumbers and summer squash. I think I can finish them even though it’s late. Thanks for the inspiration! Next year I’m doing more.
I saw this on another youtube channel. Last year we had a hornworm invasion that ruined our tomatoes. When I started researching how to handle this problem I came across this idea. Dig a hole for your tomato plant. Place 1/4 teas chewing tobacco in the hole - cover with a little dirt so your plant won't be touching it, plant your tomato and care for it as usual. The gardener who shared this tip said the tobacco makes the leaves have a taste that the worms don't like but it doesn't effect the flavor of the tomato. Don't know if this is true but we are having a huge crop of tomatoes this year. Thanks for the tips on pruning tomatoes - we were having rot but once I gave my plants a severe pruning we haven't had that problem again!
You garden/homestead is goals! I love watching your videos and one day dream of having my own little self-sufficient homestead. Thank you for doing these tours and educational videos. They’re so inspiring and great to watch.
I love your pragmatic approach. Its inspiring to a beginning gardener like me: imperfect garden planted better than doing nothing because I don't know how to be perfect".
Ok simple comment “Can we just talk about that Beautiful COFFEE MUG Sweet Miah brought to you!” LOVE ❤️! (Yes of course yes love ya Jess & everything else about the tour!)
now that its chilly, i go back and watch jess garden tours.. just so darn excited to start growing my favs.. but enjoying the winter rest.. blessings to everyone, happy holidays!
I really like the idea of calling that high tunnel redemption . Hope, purpose and intention rolled into one. Love how lush your garden is and so amazed at your progress this year. I moved to my forever home 1 month ago. I have 3 garden spaces going and lots of composting started. I have a shorter season but I want to get as much done as possible so next year is much more lush and I can start adding livestock.
Next time your planning a large bed area use cardboard and tent pegs to get a real feel for the flow around the beds. I do it with major kitchen remodeling too so I can feel the flow between high traffic areas(sink, cooker, fridge) can't wait till it's all done even though I know it will never be "finished" I've started planting flowers in my veg garden because of you, I LOVE IT. Thank you
Yes we must steward the earth well and focus win stewarding the next generation. Working on teaching my children what really matters in life. Sad that it has been 110 plus degrees here the last few days it has my garden yellowing and some is making it while others parts it isn't. But I keep planting and praying that I can harvest something. We went to a you pick it place to get boxes of tomatoes to make homemade spaghetti sauce and more since my tomatoes are a bust again! Im not loosing hope.
I feel you on this. My tomatoes are struggling this year with the heat and no rain. I got burned last year starting plants too early and they froze in the winter storm when we lost power. I didn't start them early this year and they weren't able to grow big enough before it got too hot. I've seen some videos on how to protect plants if they get put outside too early. I think Cali Kim, Gary Pilarchik (Rusted Garden), and You Can't Eat the Grass have some good videos on starting plants when you don't have a greenhouse but it's too cold for them to be outside at night or unprotected.
Thank You!!! for saying that about companion planting guides! I have never followed them, and have great success with what I do. People keep telling me I am doing it wrong, I just smile and show them my garden! :)
I love that you say your name and give an update to all the new viewers at the beginning of each video. I've been here for a bit, but if I miss a few videos I have a little update!
Hey Jess! This is my first year growing produce. I've always been an ornamental gardener and as you mentioned in a video not long ago, I, too, ave felt an urgency to grow food for several years as well. I finally jumped in! I have 4 galvanized 8x4 raised beds and everything is doing so well. I am in Georgia, about 30 minutes south of Atlanta, so same zone as you and about the same dates for 1st and last frosts. I am harvesting loads of summer squash and prolific straigt neck squash, as well as bush pickle cucumbers, and today got my first contender green beans. I will have some Hale's best cabtaloupes ready in a couple weeks! To say I am stoked and feeling so blessed is an VAST understatement. I am feeling so accomplished, not taking anything for granted, and just have fallen in love with gardening all over again! I'm expanding into the ground in the fall! I have been so busy and didn't trellis my brandywine and delicious tomatoes before they got too large to put the cage around. Now, tomato cages are not a good option because they are beginning to lean over onto the ground and "vine". I've decided I'm not upset about that since I can layer it with garden staples to create more tops. What would be a good option for a trellis at this point? I have them planted in a pattern like this...•°• •°• in one long half of one bed; and another bed is similar with Romas but since they're determinate, I'm not having the same issue. In the middle of the bed I have a short PVC and vinyl lattice trellis to keep the watermelon on its own side. I'd love to hear your ideas! I absolutely love your channel, have ordered your book off of Amazon, and ordering the new one soon! Can't wait for the release!!
Your channel brings me so much gardening joy. I'm a proud baby grdner, growing fruits and veggies in one raised garden bed and several grow bags on my deck in our backyard.
until a friend reminded me today, snacking on fresh from the garden peas in the middle of winter isnt 'normal' for most folks. thankfully here doenst get snow or much below freezing in winter so i can grow things all year with some precaution. growing ones on own food is so rewarding and so many people in the world are so diconnected from where our food comes from
I love your main message of growing, not grow only this way that turns me off to many gardening channels. I love okra and also love it raw. Come to think of it, much of my garden is used raw. Considering the tests they have done and how much pesticide is found in people, yes, we need to figure out how to live on the earth and how to fix it when possible. Tunnel name: Rehab tunnel. Recovery Tunnel.
The plan sounds amazing . I wish we would get some rain here . We need it so badly . I love all your flowers and those sunflowers WOW!!!! I grew sugar baby watermelons and they are amazing . I threw out some watermelon seeds that got wet and looked molded and wouldn't you know some grew so I have some full size melons out there too . I don't know what kind they are but we will see if they get full grown . My grandbaby loves to go worm hunting at night . She is so cute .
This is the highlight of my day, and it’s the inspiration I need for the week. I hope you guys had a wonderful vacation! Make lots of great memories, they grow up so fast! Sincerely, mama of 30-year-old and 24-year-old men.💕🙌🤟
The ducks made me laugh!! They are so entertaining! My duck flock is growing by twelve this year! Of course they still run away from all humans when they hear us! And your garden is lovely as usual!!!
Another great garden tour. Jess, we are here to learn, thank you for being such a great teacher that helps us become better gardeners, and stewards of the land with all we have been given to care for. God can heal our land.
So glad I found you through a garden group on Gab. We just bought 20 acres in South Carolina zone 8A and relocated our 5 beehives. Now we are plotting and planning our garden, orchard and other plantings. We need to learn the ins and outs of gardening down here.
Haha so glad you corrected yourself about the frost-tender rhubarb! I remember thinking at the time "No it's not, but maybe they have much worse frosts than us"
You could call the annual tunnel “The Waiting Room” since you are waiting on the soil to heal
I like this.
Love this!!
Makes a lot of sense to call it that. ❤️ Love it.
Yes !!! Turn your "Waiting room" into your classroom
SOmeone make her a cute garden sign, that's perfect.
The “Lazarus”high tunnel
We will see it come back to life with a caring and loving heart watching over it
Great name!

Such a treat for your UK viewers to be invited into your garden at 3pm.
The melons are promising to provide a plethora of sweet profusion! 😋
I'd call it the Phoenix tunnel. Hope you had a great vacation!
I love how you get so excited about the garden and its fruits!💕🙏🏼
I “companion plant” to encourage the bees into my vegetable garden and because flowers in with the cabbages and tomatoes make me happy
The fuzzy green back of the borage flower can be delicately pulled off for maximum enjoyment 🤠
P.s. Love your channel so so much
I love your pragmatic approach. Its inspiring to a beginning gardener like me: imperfect garden planted better than doing nothing because I don't know how to be perfect".
Your inspiration moves me to keep going, everything is looking great, thank you Jessie, and God bless you and family
Ok simple comment “Can we just talk about that Beautiful COFFEE MUG Sweet Miah brought to you!” LOVE ❤️! (Yes of course yes love ya Jess & everything else about the tour!)
YES, TO THE DWARF FRUIT TREES AT THE BACK OF THE POTAGER GARDEN!👏🏼
now that its chilly, i go back and watch jess garden tours.. just so darn excited to start growing my favs.. but enjoying the winter rest.. blessings to everyone, happy holidays!
Love the garden tours! Thanks Jess 🥰
Loving your cottage garden Jess , it's looking wonderful..
"Your Decisions are Raindrops that Together Make Waves" ... Beautiful... Can I quote you on this or should I quote someone else? ... Beautiful!!!
Borage deters hornworms. Basil, too! Warms my heart to see all your firsts. Enjoy that first tomato sandwich!
Beautiful. Thank you for sharing all the beauty. I just love my hummingbirds.
Made the basil tea out of my first good cutting! I loved it and shared with alot of people who had never heard of it! Thanks Jess!
I did as well! I used the Thai basil that I am growing and I love it!
Thank you
Wow!!! Those sunflowers!! So beautiful. I enjoyed the garden tour...everyone is special and it's exciting to see the progress. You bless me.
Those sunflowers . . .just supper wow!!
I have also struggled. Many of my seeds never came up. Its really the strangest gardening year ever.
It's nice to hear this because I've noticed my tomatoes are so much smaller this year. I will keep hope that they will produce! :)
@@PackRatManiac thanks!! I'll go and take a look.
I did not know that about picking/ripening tomatoes. 🙌 Thanks for sharing that!
I'm with you on the hummingbirds!!! I had a tiny baby on my feeder yesterday and it made me soooo happy!!!!
I just love your passion for gardening! Everything is looking great!
Yes I can only garden in raised beds now because of my health. Thanks Jess for all your information you share
It’s so nice to see a RUclips homestead channel in SC! We just moved from from the upstate to the midlands & are working on a mini garden!
Ps, I love the cottage garden & green house!
I love seeing your garden development. Its also great to leaen from and get inspiration! Have a good time on the family trip!
My little squirrel getting my tomatoes is my 5 year old Benny 🤣 I always loved that we both have a Ben that loves gardening and tomatoes 🍅❤️
Those sunflowers are amazing!!
Oh yeah... your garden is amazing!! 👍👍
I love when you talk tomato 🍅 it’s my favorite
Important! Plant some marigolds near your tomatoes Jess. Natural pest repellent! It works! My Granny always did this.
Wow those sunflowers are stunning!
Jess, a beautiful video, Thank you so much for sharing. God Bless.
So beautiful! ICANT WAIT TO SEE IT IN A YEAR OR TWO!
Praying you had a fantastic Family Vacation! So thrilled with this week's tour, I love seeing the changes!
I remember thinking at the time "No it's not, but maybe they have much worse frosts than us"
It's always a pleasure watching this channel. Thanks for sharing!
