After your “rant”, I decided to start actively promoting gardening in my neighborhood. It’s an older neighborhood with large yards, and I have gathered about 25 people! Most of them are new, so I’m excited! I’ll be promoting preservation as well. Empowering people to own their capability is huge. I am a drop of water, and I hope I’m inspiring 25 more drops of water. Fantastic! Not to be a Debbie downer at all but please manage expectations on the time of year we are in right now. Lots to go row still, but fall crops an have some issues with new gardeners. My recommendation is to look forward to late winter next year for starting a solid garden and encourage fall crops that cannot miss like radish or spinach where you can quickly prove this works. Starting a bunch of broccoli or cauliflower could be a huge fail. Keep it simple to start.
My grandma always canned and put food away for “ just in case”. She grow up during the Great Depression. She taught us how to do things like making dandelion salad, can, and knit. She called things like this keeping it in your back pocket. You might never need to do the things she taught but you have them just in case.
It is disturbing to me that this soil contamination is worse now that there is hardly any food. And yes I do remember the bare shelves. I think you are amazing. Keep doing what you do

@@terrymiller6218 Hi Terry, sure It’s really simple. You go get yourself some dandelions from a place you know has no chemical spray on the area. Take the greens out of the ground. My grandma used to cut the bottom of the plant with a knife out of the ground. You wash them and take out the flowers and stems, we just want the greens. Then add some olive oil and a little salt and pepper.

Extra impressive considering that the farmers who grew those $2.25 a piece squash will only have seen a tiny percentage of that price...as with everyone else along the supply chain. You are super rich, when you think about it that way. Good for you

I told my husband when I look at my harvest sitting on the kitchen counter, I feel rich! The prices keep rising but the value of the food is even more.
I'm 68, retired, living in a small space in the mountains, where it snows. I've never grown a garden, but I have five little carrot tops sprouting on the back of my kitchen sink, one celery stalk bottom regrowing in a pint jar outside, two tomatoes plant starts I've already overwatered then underwatered that are somehow still alive, along with two bell pepper plant starts ready to go into containers. All thanks to you, I haven't given up.

Jess, these words hit me deep today. I have been feeling so frustrated with my garden and yet comforted that I’m not alone. My best friend who has gardened for years has struggled with blister beetles on her land and garden this year. All of my tomatoes have failed to either grow or produce, fire ants have attacked and killed back my Red Long Noodle beans, my eggplants I planted at the end of April are just now growing, all of my flowers have died and my elephant ears are dying.… I’ve been so frustrated with the failures I’ve forgotten to celebrate my successes and I started feeling tempted to throw in the towel for fall.

I just wanted to say that I live in Tx as well, and this year, I decided to grow a vegetable garden for the first time in my life. I’m 53. I always thought I had a black thumb, but I’ve found that I don’t. I’ve learned that there will be failures, but there r also successes and the successes make all the failures worth it. Hang in there bc if I can do it so can u! ❤️
@@loricawley54 Me too! 53, black thumb. Started a small container garden and had some great growth but left it too long in the dirt, should learn when to harvest vs when to pull seeds. This year I expanded to egg laying chickens, fruit trees/bushes & ruth stout potatoes with paltry harvest.

Many churches have a decent amount of property and means to put in raised beds. May sound ricidulous, but some of them probably have the property for cattle...just sayin
@@micheleh5269 Absolutely! Our church has been having a community garden out back of the parking lot for quite a few years now. Some lost interest for awhile but CV19 got their attention again. Also many larger communities have "growing programs" that help community gardens like ours and have programs for home gardeners too. In our county we have "Toledo Grows" and they put on a huge seed swap every February. 🌻
I would love to see HOW and where you store things - i.e. cold storage without a root cellar, long-term storage of dried goods, it’s all so overwhelming for a beginner. Thanks! Love everything you share 🥰
This id like to know too. So many people have to live in apartments so i need ideas. The only thing that comes to mind is a freezer that i could keep in a deck. I have no idea what to do inside. I can some but only have 1 shelf for dry goods.
@@angelaraum1545 i saw a program where they lifted the upholstery on the back of their couch and stored in it, removing sections of walls and storing in the wall.
Flat totes under the beds can be filled with dry goods, totes under end tables, coffee tables, choose a wall in a bedroom and go floor to ceiling totes, heavy stuff on bottom lighter stuff on top. You can do it!
Jess is a very busy woman and I’m not sure if she’ll have time for the videos you need right now so I don’t wanna take away from her channel but I would like to recommend channels to you that already have this information out so you can get started !
These are RUclips channels with some good food storage ideas and there are many more once you start looking at these more will be posted in your recommended section, RUclips does that !

I suggest investing in a food dehydrator, you can get one for $50 maybe less, I’ve have 4 and 3 came from thrift stores. A freeze dryer is out of my budget but dehydrating is still amazing, you can put up so much food in such a small space it’s crazy !!! You can dehydrate store bought vegetables straight from the bag or fresh if you don’t have a garden, I think 5-6 lbs frozen peas once dehydrated fit in a quart jar !
Save ALL jars, collect them from the local recycling bin (yes, I’m a dumpster diver), get food grade 5 gallon buckets from a deli, restaurant or bakery to store bulky stuff like oatmeal, flour, rice, beans, sugar. When stacking 5 gal buckets don’t stack more than 3 high or put a board in between otherwise it’s too much weight on the inner part of the lids on the lower buckets. Floor to ceiling buckets tucked in a corner doesn’t take a lot of room but is a lot of food . I put a 6” wide shelf around the perimeter of rooms down about 12” from the ceiling, it is lined with jars of dehydrated food and bulk spices ! There are RUclips videos on making meals with dehydrated foods. Once you start watching you will find all kinds of info !!!
If you have local Amish communities they usually have “stores”, you can get great deals on bulk food !!!!

I told the ladies group at my church last year that they needed to get their food storage in order. I said "pretend you're out on a boat in the middle of a huge lake, and you see a storm in the distance. What do you do? You pray and TRUST THE LORD but you ALSO ROW TO SHORE!! Think of preparing food and home supplies as rowing to shore. Still fully trusting the Lord."
Jess, I am a Christian too. Two years ago I had the same relentless pull on my heart to start a garden as well. It's like God was giving all of us those nudges to begin preparing and get ourselves ready for something to come. Your videos were among the first I found that helped teach me how to do so. I am so grateful for all of you RUclipsrs out there that have taken the time to teach us how to grow our own food. My garden didn't do as well as I hoped it would this year, but I am learning from my mistakes. Better to learn now how to fix the problems that we run into in the garden, rather than later when we might be absolutely dependent upon every thing we grow. Thanks again for your help.
Just before lockdown I had a dream and was told to prepare because everything was going to reset and human beings would start valuing the world again. There are definitely many people around the world connected to spirit/God/source/universe who are being called to create gardens and grow things. It is undeniable

Its not "god" talking to you, its just basic, common sense. The world is massively over-populated, and humans are literally destroying our own habitats/water/food sources (and every other species'). The US is one of the countries contributing the most to this mass destruction due to a big population of very selfish and mostly ignorant people. It would be ridiculous if some of those people didnt start finally waking up. Who knows how many more fires, droughts and wars we'll need before we all get off our asses and stop ruining the planet...
Yes 2019 was the year God nudged me. I quickly realised the day before our first lockdown why being prepared earlier is so important, rather than scrambling to get a kitset garden bed to keep me busy during that time haha. I am taking this push seriously now but still have a lot to learn. It's so encouraging to know others are getting the same message

For one I know she’s cut her suckers off her good tomatoes and rooting them right now to start them in the fall garden
I know it sounded like she was referencing a separate plan but I think what she was talking about is her plan. Succession sowing, buying bulk dry goods and she mentioned buying bulk veg and fruits to preserve if your garden didn’t produce to the scale you need.
@@Sheywh12 I have a couple of campari tomato plants that I harvested the seeds from store-bought and they're only about 9 or 10 in tall so I really doubt they're going to produce this year is it possible to put them in a good south facing window and over winter them? Does anyone know?
@@susanturner1171 I experimented last winter with two of our favorite tomatoes bringing them into my sunroom (very, very sunny spot). They grew spindly over the winter, but I was able to cut suckers this spring and root those. Not all of the suckers made it once transplanted, but two are still doing well planted out in the garden right now.

All the generations since the 50’s have never lived through what we are living through. I am in my 60’s and I am learning how to can and put up food.

I so love you and your message, Jess! We just closed on 24+ acres of forest, wetlands, and meadows off grid in the pacific northwest. At 55 I have never been more excited about my future to build community and teaching people to grow. We are planning to have workshops to encourage sustainability and I too want to have an abundance to share with others.

I don't know how I would have made it through 2020 without you. I started a garden thanks to you. I think maybe you saved my sanity. Because of covid and the differing opinions people had, I am now living alone in a small apartment. But my balcony is a tomato jungle. It faces North so I haven't had too much Harvest yet but today I see Tomatoes blushing and it makes me so happy. I truly love you like a daughter (I have no children). Hey Jess, I just learned this tip that I’m really excited about for storing potatoes!!! U can cut them up and dehydrate them, and blend them up in a food processor afterwards and make like potato flakes, then store those as instant potatoes like they sell in the boxes!!!
I also remember those empty grocery shelves. I said "never again" about my empty pantry. There will always be times of plenty and times of scarcity. You are right that especially in times of scarcity, we need to go forward in planting and helping others in their journey. I am probably the age of your grandma. I've had years of plenty and years of no gardens. I live in an apartment and now have hydroponics gardens for greens and tomatoes. I also continue to stock my pantry and always cook from scratch. I'm seeing many other seniors relying on meals in wheels, frozen foods etc. It's like many have forgotten how to cook. If nothing else I can be there to help them.
Me too!! Covid lock down got me started on pantry stocking. Growing my own food became more urgent when I saw those shelves bare.
Here’s an idea for keeping those tomatoes from being chomped on by critters-get a packet of clear mesh jewelry bags with the little satin ties. Slip them over your fruit while they are growing and the critters will leave them alone. It works with cherry tomatoes too - I slip a bag over an entire truss of cherrys and cinch the ribbon closed. Voilá!

Thank you! I grew up poor as well and I learned how to cook and stretch meals to feed more than just my household.
Got a good story. I am 73 and never had a garden. Well I have been watching you and jill (whispering willow) and decided to plant two tomatoe plants. Well to begin the tomatoes where suppose to be two different slices, well one is a cherry tomatoe, so making it a good situation I am eating the cherry tomatoes off the vine. My first crop ever. Still happy even with the mistake. I just planted as told to do, just plant something.
I bought your "No fear, more plants" t-shirt and it just arrived yesterday. I turn off RUclipsrs who fear monger. I never feel that you are doing that. I think the truth is sometimes scary and that's just where we are.
One lesson the pandemic food shortages taught me was that my family and I will be served by broadening our diet. I'll never forget going to the grocery and buying beets and eggplant and turnips and celery root. A young woman looked at my basket and I could tell she was frustrated because there weren't any of the things that were familiar to her. Eat the rainbow, eat something new and learn how to prepare it in a tasty manner.
I so appreciate what you are doing, Jess. We need each other for whatever may come, I pray we all will live in bounty and will have enough to care for all those we love.

Thanks, Jess!! And your example is why we shouldn't always put all of our eggs in one basket! Yes, we can grow our own food - but have commercial food available (or double up on home canning and dehydrating for a few years down the road) for when a failure in the garden happens. Be prepared if a food is on sale at the store - stock up so that it's there in case. And THANK YOU for talking about making this more about "MY" survival, but that we can help others survive as well - there will be hungry hurting people who do not have the capacity to do more than they are already barely able to do now (think of those seniors who live alone without family, and without ability to garden, those single moms with kids who are already working 3 jobs and not making it, the man who has been disabled from a lifetime of physical labor and cannot support himself well now or his family). Be a friend - LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR WELL!

Can we all just cry over the tomato loss. OH MY goodness friend. I lost 300 tomato plants this year and shed a good number of tears of that. We were able to recover and have about 400 plants in the ground but I hate LOSS. Thank you for your encouragement.

I hadn’t gardened in 6 years and wasn’t even thinking about going back to gardening until 2020. I started watching you because of it. In March, I realized that I should have a garden. It was the worst garden I had ever had at that point. But each year after has been a blessing. So, I was one of those who started watching you because of what I saw in 2020 and the empty shelves.

I’m living in Toronto, Ontario, and I can see that people here are not really concerned at all. We live in abundance and privilege and don’t think about going without, but some like myself do, and we’re not looking so “paranoid” after all. I've wanted to give up so bad on gardening all together the past couple years but I kept having this feeling to keep pushing forward. And I am. I'm 5 years in learning to garden and it's like I have a voice that speaks to me telling me not to give that up, not allowing me to walk away from it. It's definitely hard and now I have a community garden I'll be "teaching" that'll be up and going soon. But the way I've been seeing it is that the more I speak of it and teach it, the more I learn myself.

I've started planting second summer wave and I have broccoli, Brussels and cabbages started inside to go out in the fall. I hope I will actually have a successful fall garden this year.

@@TropicalOrkids I just put a fence around my garden and I am planning to electrify it. I have 2 ground hogs, 2 rabbits and too many deer that think I am growing a garden for them lol.

But I definitely recommend perennials always! Less maintenance plus some things actually need a winter period to thrive like berries & some fruit trees. Annuals that like the cooler weather can do really well in a fall garden include things like leafy greens, brussel sprouts, peas, potatoes, cilantro, beets, carrots etc (All of which can tolerate a light frost) and should be started already for a fall garden in our short season. Probably better to buy plants if you haven't started seeds by now. Some things can actually overwinter in the ground if you plant them too late (ie sowing carrots from seed now) and then you can harvest them in the spring 🥕
& I prefer to dry and freeze because it's effective and easy but also because I'm not familiar with canning 🥲 though I definitely want to learn! Hoping to get the equipment before my tomatoes and peppers really start coming in next month 🍅🫑🌶

I had been on a self-sustaining journey before the pandemic started - so I had a head start and felt pretty happy about that. This is the first year I've made an entire meal with things I've grown in my garden though, so that was a pretty good accomplishment considering how new I am at this.

I've been doing everything you're recommending for several years now. The only thing we are doing new is - home gardening. We will never be able to garden enough to sustain us, but only to supplement. You're not scare mongering. You're being realistic. We grew up with very little here in the Ozarks. But we always had a garden. Our neighbor ladies would all get together and help each other can tomatoes and beans. Our home motto was “We can always live on less when we have more to live for.” Yes Jess, we were created for such a time as this! Keep growing, keep learning, keep the Faith!
Jess, I think you approached this perfectly. I appreciate that you tackled this issue with matter-of-factness, but also with hope. I've watched many videos lately about food shortages, and so many of them are doom and gloom and anxiety producing. I left this one with hope that we can do this.
We had some hard moments growing up (I'm the oldest of 7 and in my late 60s), but there was always food on the table, beans and rice with a smidge of ham sometimes, accompanied by a bottle of ketchup to spice things up a bit, fried bologna sandwiches, grits and eggs, and on better days, roast beef with yorkshire pudding. My mom was a whiz at keeping us fed, and I learned well from her. My kids and I went through some hard times also when I was a single mom, and I'll always remember my son telling me, 'Mom, it's not so bad being poor, when you don't have much, you don't have much to loose.' We'll all get through this, gotta help your neighbor, and I'd start questioning why the Chinese are buying swathes of farrmland in the US.
Their population is the largest in the world. They may not have enough land for farming in China (or maybe they are limited to specific crops).

I don't really tune in to learn but to enjoy your growth, your family, Miah's projects and so on. I love your new farm and watching what you make of it. I like the example you set to younger people to cook from scratch, grow food and preserve food. Two years ago both of my daughters took up cooking in a big way, how to make a white sauce, bechamel, what you can do with it, how to knead bread, how to can, blanching, and on and on. I increased my garden shifting the focus from flowers to food. My grandchildren loved growing food and my one grandson who lives in the apartment we created upstairs is my constant companion in the garden. He is only three but he reminds me so much of Ben helping you with the garden. We will start planting our fall garden next week. Lots and lots of peas, (grandchildren love them) broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts and probably some more cabbage. The summer squash is coming in now and the dehydrator has been running everyday with zucchini chips, herbs, etc. I am hoping for a good tomato harvest so I can put up all the sauce, diced, whole tomatoes we use. We have been stocking up since 2020 and I will be putting in another Costco order at the end of the month to cover this winter. Best of luck to everyone in getting through these difficult days.
Thanks Jess for your honesty! I’m the oldest of 12 children. My claim to fame! I’m 72 and lived with little most of my life. I know I can live on little because I also raised my 3 boys from the ages of 5,6, and 8 on my own! Now I see all that history to be to my advantage as things in the world get more and more unstable shall we say. My younger siblings may be at a slight disadvantage because they were born later and my parents did prosper in their later years. I’m just grateful for my small upbringing. Taught me a bunch about life! I’m a survivor! I can help my kids and grandkids learn from my meager upbringing too. I will share my wealth of knowledge with those who want it. I’m not knee deep in weeds but my cucumbers are getting crunchy and bitter BUT I grew cucumbers this year for the first time! They lived 🥳. Grew tomatoes and they lived and gave a harvest this year 🥳 for the first time ever! Praise God for the harvest 💕.

I just discovered your channel today, and subscribed, plus I’m binging. You speak so truthfully, and eloquently! I’m 44 years old, and started my very first garden this summer. Super proud of the outcome too! I have tomatoes, peppers, zucchini, cucumbers, potatoes, onions, garlic, spinach, carrots, and cabbage. I just planted some summer squash for a fall harvest, and will be purchasing some more seeds for Fall, and can’t wait. Made a lot of mistakes, especially over crowding, but I can’t wait till next year! Lol I’m a huge proponent of cooking from scratch, and just made pinto beans and rice for dinner the other night! I’ve even been buying dried beans each and every time I go to the store! If I go in for some milk, I walk out with milk, and a couple bags of dried beans. What you’re saying is so true. Thank you Jesse for being candid about how you, myself, and others I have talked feel. I remember hearing my grandparents tell stories about the dust bowl and the great depression and I am trying to remember everything they taught me. I grew up poor too and I know as long as I have rice, peas-not a big bean family-, flour and fruit I can make enough food for my family to survive. Anything else is a blessing.
Jess, we are living in "such a time as this" Esther 4. We are living through this hard time but we are strong. Gardening, canning and also buying at the store is the way to be prepared for your families. No judgment on buying grains, beans, canned meat for storage and survival. I have a garden, mostly tomatoes, zuke, cukes this year and the tomatoes are doing especially good this year. If you have an ear, listen to the warnings. Blessings on you and your family.
My garden had a few carrots that grew well. I had my husband buy large bags of carrots and I have been canning them.
@@carolstorchlightcottage6269 Strange year for zuke and crookneck. Had lots of rain in So. Oregon May into June so had to plant later than normal. My tomatoes are doing better than last year because we had all the smoke from the fires and not a lot of sunshine . Glad you got carrots canned!

Having lived thru times when all we had was homemade biscuts and jam, or a bag of potatoes for several weeks, or rice as our food source I can relate to what you are saying. I have been slowly building up my supplies and trying to grow my garden. I have also been discouraged this year in my pour crops but will continue to grow what I can.
