    Becky, we receive farm fresh produce from farmers that have extra. As senior citizens it is a blessing. I did not have to purchase any zucchini, lettuce or eating tomatoes (I did purchase canning tomatoes but at a great price of $5.99 for 25 lbs). Thank you for giving to both seniors and families! Hug.

      @@AcreHomesteadWe are big fans of most any green as well as most every recipe from the Mediterranean/Middle Eastern cuisines. Our love for global dishes were a welcome addition to the long list of Appalachian & family staples that I was raised eating & adoring (not so much my hubby, but he quickly realized that butter, farm fresh eggs & garden anything was superior 😂). We had grown Arugula & cucumbers over one of our cattle panel arches for a few years until I heard Tipper Pressley mention 'Malabar Spinach' here on YT & it’s amazing lifespan! It truly is a garden workhorse & can be used in multitudes of ways from early spring through hard frost. We highly recommend watching one of her videos or simply giving it a try. Sending hugs, love & prayers that you all may enjoy a wonderful & blessed remainder of this weekend 🤗💜🙏🏻.

      Becky. I also am a senior citizen, and I’ve been trying to find where I can find fresh produce from? How were you able to get your extra from the farmers? Would I just call around?

    • @Smalfry47
      @Smalfry47 10 месяцев назад

      @@annwheeler1658 ….. look for a facility that does senior commodities, there is a government program that subsidizes people 65 and older in Ohio. Each month they give out boxes with canned goods, canned meat, peanut butter, beans, cereals, boxed milk and powdered milk, spaghetti noodles, pasta sauce and a block of cheese. Farmers give extra produce and they bag it up for the seniors…….

    When we grew cantaloupes, my husband made a big mound of dirt and then planted several seeds a few inches apart at the top of the mound. The vines and leaves just went their own way and produced soooo many cantaloupes. When we harvested them, my daughter would come home from work and see our harvest and say, “Oh no…not MORE cantaloupes!!!!) She got so sick of them🤣🤣

    Hi Becky, I’m a veggie gardener in Wyoming and I love to watch your channel! Powdery mildew is omnipresent in the soil/air, and many if not most cucurbits get it later in the season. The best way to avoid it is to give the plant more room to grow, hence more airflow around the leaves. I also look for seed varieties that are PM resistant. I heard a master gardener once say “90% of the success of a plant happens before the seeds ever go in the ground. Seed genetics and soil health.” Words I’ve lived by!

  • @christopherbarchi4554
    @christopherbarchi4554 10 месяцев назад +92

    Helpful tip: when you plant to close together they compete for the same sun, water, air and nutrients in the soil. When plants are young it may seem like it is not a problem as you want to maximize every square inch but at harvest time it is a real problem. The space between plants should be considered just as you would consider soil nutrients a must. Slow down and take time to do it right the first time and you will be a master in no time at all. You did have an abundant harvest but imagine the possibilities. Also harvest time is so pretty and when things are crowded so tightly that joy of "seeing" the plant lessens as well. Hope that makes sense.

    I think your corn might be a lil tightly planted for germination. The top is where the pollen is, and it needs to be able to fall into the rest of the plans to produce the seeds (corn)

      @karriegress5969 10 месяцев назад

      When we had a small garden, we hilled our corn...put them on a row of hill and used the valley to water them....sort of the way cornfields watered with irrigation pipes...but with our garden hose. I grew the Musquee de Provence pumpkins here in MN last year. Some of the best pie pumpkins I have ever tasted! I had to let them sit a couple months after harvest because they were a little green. Beautiful dark orange flesh and dense. I spot fertilized in each transplant hole with worm castings and azomite dust. I had two that were 70 lbs each! They are a slower growing pumpkin, so I will seed start them 3 weeks earlier than other squash seeds next year.

    Here is an idea on helping to minimize being overwhelmed by your garden tasks: ZONE YOUR GARDEN
    You have 20 raised beds. You might split the beds say into 5 zones (4 beds in each zone) my idea is is that you could take maybe 20-30 (more or less depending upon the tasks) minutes each day in 1 zone. Monday zone 1, Tuesday zone 2, Wednesday zone 3 & so on. Whatever needs addressed in that zone you do, weather it be planting in spring, weed maintenance during the growing season or harvesting. Just an idea to minimize being overwhelmed. Thank you for bringing us along in your garden & kitchen.

    I don't know how much corn you eat throughout the year. My opinion, till another garden plot, in your yard (that is about the size of 3 of your beds), Plant corn in the ground and place a fence around it. You can use your gardening box for something else that you need to watch closer than your corn. That way you can harvest more corn. Just a suggestion! 😊❤
