    Also, pears are usually picked unripe from the tree as they ripen from the inside out. They are need cold storage before ripening. Learned this after many years of our prolifically producing pear tree giving us unusable pears. Turns out it was our fault, not the trees:)

    • @katblyth8153
      @katblyth8153 9 месяцев назад +7

      That’s what I was told to do, and was thinking about it all tgrough the segment. Pears that ripen fully on the tree are generally quite mushy.

    After you cut up your apples for pie filling, hand pies, crisps, applesauce etc, nobody will be able to tell that you cut off a sun spot, bruise or bug damage. They will only know delicious! The perfect ones are good for storage. Remember to save some for stuffing your turkey and for pork roasts. They sweeten the meat in the best ways and keep them moist.

    Before next year’s potato harvest, get a Potato Fork (a.k.a. Garden or Spading fork). The tines are much broader and less damaging than the narrow tines of a Pitchfork, designed for “pitching” straw or hay.

    • @pscott228
      @pscott228 9 месяцев назад +4

      I was just ready to mention that! Lucky I scrolled down to find your post. We always used a potato fork to harvest out potatoes. The hay forks are not meant to use with dirt like a shovel.

    I was born and raised in Oregon and we had 25 acres of apple trees. You can wrap them in newspaper and put in cardboard boxes in a cool garage they will last until spring. We canned applesauce, pie filling, dehydrated, juiced apples and gifted the area w apples.

  • @auntlouise
    @auntlouise 9 месяцев назад +3

    Awesome harvest! I recommend that you prune those apple trees this fall, it doesn't look like they've been pruned in awhile. One way that I prep my beds for winter is to spread alfalfa hay across the top of the beds and let it rot over the winter, then I turn it under before spring planting. It is great fertilizer, prevents weeds, and when you turn in under it helps your soil retain moisture through the summer months..

    The correct way to pick apples. You turn the eye of the apple to the sky the apple will break off the tree. The eye is on the bottom of the Apple.
    If you just pull the apple down you can damage the branch of the tree.

      Apple seeds do contain just the tiniest amount of cyanide, the chickens would have to eat a huge truckload of seeds every day to even start feeling sick. In short, no problem even for humans if you accidentally swallow a seed.

    When we were kids (I’m in my late 60s) my parents had a huge garden with lots of fruit trees and a 20 ft green house. One of our chores was to gather the windfall apples from the 5 apple trees.
    My mum would process the windfalls( cutting of damage, bruising etc) and make into alcoholic cider (scrumpy). No apples were left on the ground to rot meaning there was nothing to attract wasps. The scrumpy was delicious. The apple trees were varieties where the apples were good keepers.
    Freezing food wasn’t common in those days, so when dad harvested from the trees, we used to pick out the unblemished apples wrap them in tissue and lay in stackable trays which would go in our cool dark cellar. They would remain edible (albeit a bit wizened towards the end) until about February.
    The blemished apples would be eaten quickly or made into preserves such as chutney, jam, jelly or bottle as stewed apple.

    Not sure if anyone else commented on this, but in future, dear, lift and twist as you harvest your fruits. I worked harvesting apples for a few seasons, and learned that if you break off the woody tip of the branch, called the spur, which the stem is connected to, no apple will grow there next year. By lifting and twisting, you use a lighter touch, and therefore avoid making finger bruises on your apples. Wonderful harvest of potatoes and apples. Your garden is amazing!
    Also, with the large amount of apples you get, you could get a cider press, and press the apples to can your own apple juice.

    A far as the apples are concerned most sunspots and small damage can be cut away and the rest of the apple should still be ok, me and my foster mother used to even pick them off the ground , cutting out the bad spots and making apple sauce and canning chunked for pies and such. Awesome harvest! Stuffed zucchini boats are so delicious! I have frozen a bunch in the past as well for stir-fries.

    It’s best to twist an apple off the tree instead of pulling it off. Less damage too tree and future production.

    Becky pears should be picked underripe. If you leave them to ripen on the tree, they get little hard bits through them

    Becky see if you can get someone to help you prune your apple tree. It needs more light and air flow. This will help with the presure next year. You can also spray with Souround Clay next year. It will make your harvest even better and more healthy. Just sharing.

    It's amazing that you take advantage of all the food you have available and share it, too. I don't have any fruit trees and it saddens me to see some trees full of fruit in my area that people do not eat or give away. The fruit just falls off the branches and rots. Your generosity is rewarded. It seems like the more you share the better harvest you get. Very well deserved.

      This makes me sad too. We have a new-ish neighbor and I just found out that he cut down the pear tree in his backyard because last year they fell off the tree and he had a ton of bugs. I’m like, I would have happily come over and picked them all off the tree! 😢

    I’m moving soon and will have a garden for the first time since I was a child. You’ve inspired me to grow some produce. I’m definitely going to grow some russet potatoes. I’m going to get me a garden diary to tell me when to plant seeds and baby plants. I’m planning a start in January. Can’t wait. xx

    How awesome that you have your parents close by to help.
    I am addicted to watching all your videos.
    Those apples would make some amazing Applebutter jam.
    Russet potatoes are pretty much what we eat!
    I am encouraged to look into gardening in the spring. Not as big as yours but small enough to start and find what we like to grow and eat
    ! We love homemade salsa so veggies for that is a must! Loving all the canning tips!

    Will you rake the ground to move the downed apples to a star outside the fence for the deer to enjoy?
    Also, will you at the proper time top the fruit trees to make harvesting next season more manageable ? No ladder climbing.

    Please take out that cedar bush. It's not good for the Apple trees. The sun damaged apples could still be used if you cut off the bad in apple sauce.
