Oh Jess. I watched that very first garden tour and I just completely teared up at the start of this one. You and I have been gardening and homesteading for about the same period of time but that first garden tour you did reinvigorated me during a year that I was struggling with finding my way back to the garden with a toddler. My eldest, Willow, is the same age as Ben. You have unknowingly been my garden buddy for all these years and have kept me inspired. I am so incredibly happy for you and very excited to come visit your store in SC (we're in NC). I don't comment much but have loved every second of watching your dreams become reality. 💖

Wow, you're quickly coming up on one year at the new homestead, and look at what you all have accomplished! Home, gardens, greenhouse, barn, cows, horses, hammocks, and don't forget the tree swing and the willow tree from the very beginning. Of course we want to see the baby birds taking their first walk! And I kind of don't want you to rip out all those damaged plants simply because I'd like to see if they recover at all, or if they just fail. Thank you, as always.

As a perennial grower for a wholesale nursery, I recommend you plant the coral bells (Heuchera) on the north side of the greenhouse as they will burn in the southern sun in summer. They need some shade or shelter in the hottest part of the day. Everything is looking absolutely beautiful.

Jess, you can broadcast mustard seeds to use as a biofumigant in your contaminated soils. In parts of agriculture India that I've visited, this is done at least once per season as a matter of course. Not as pretty as sunflowers perhaps, but quick growing and covers more area.
It can be chopped and dropped before setting seed to act as green mulch as well.

    • @ArtByKarenEHaley
      @ArtByKarenEHaley 2 года назад +2

I love seeing large fields of mustard. Very popular with the butterflies and bees. They grow big fields of it here in the Willamette Valley in Oregon as a green manure like you mentioned, allowed to flower for some honey production but mowed and tilled before it goes to seed. Theres also tillage radish feilds around here. When those flower it's gorgeous, like a field dusted with snow.

Grazon, applied to hay, grass crops to keep the weeds a bay, the cows, horses, sheep, goats ect. eat the hay and grasses, the Grazon passes through they’re system compost is made and the Grazon lives on, I believe it takes several years to leech from the soil. Or maybe salt, next level gardener ran into that problem with some compost he purchased. Salt is easier to leech out of the soil, but it still takes some work. I might suggest you have that soil tested before you eat anything you’ve grown in that area. P.S. you probably won’t read this, I hope you do, good luck ! 🌸💚🙃

No matter what type of potato I grow( most are determinate) I fill 10 gallon bucket half way with loamy soil, put 1-2 seed potatoes in and cover with more dirt. Fertilize once a week with my chicken poop tea and water well weekly. Works so great for us with limited ground space. Planting in buckets allows me to use garden space for other veg. Huw Richards on RUclips is someone you might enjoy watching. He has been doing no dig and building great soil. Using nettles and comfrey for fertilizer tea. On same idea as Charles Dowding but I find him easier to watch. I’m so happy for you ❤

I saw a social media post yesterday from a friend showing a bountiful harvest of squash, zucchini, beans, cucumbers and how she was canning and freezing them. About 8 years ago I gave her a couple of squash plant starts and some green bean seeds, we planted them in a small flower bed, harvested a decent little crop, and I taught her how to can. And I thought about the others I have mentored and bought plants, seeds, and canning supplies for. Without giving it much thought, I have taught folks to grow food. 2 of my 3 children have large gardens to help feed their families. It fills my heart with happy. Thank you, Jess & Miah, for sharing your journey with us.

Hey, just thought I would mention. I had a similar issue with herbicides from a horse bedding compost I get from a local stable that had a mishap.
Alot ended up dying, so I planted sunflowers and an oat, barely, wheet cover crop mix. As soon as the cover crop mix was mature and setting flowers I pulled it out and replanted another round of cover crop. Here in New Zealand, were I am I have an almost subtropic Climate so was able to get about 3 rounds of cover crop to bioaccumulate that herbicide. And by the spring my tomatoes grew fine again 🤷‍♀️

About the deer, someone posted on the Friends group last week that she pounded stakes around the perimeter and simply strung fishing line only a couple of feet high around it. Deer can't see the line and when they approach the garden they feel something invisible pressing against them and it spooks them big-time. No more deer! Sure no shortage of fishing line at your place! 😁

I actually love your in ground beds, the fluidity of them all, greens of all different shapes melting into the straight pathways. Personally, I love the combination of the Birdies raised beds, along with the mass of in ground beds in their fluid rows. Loved the tour of your new gardens - exciting to see how they are developing and to feel the happy as gardener in you as they do.

About the black...your garden is stained glass held together with black lead! Beautiful! Take as long as you need to show the whole thing...we're here enjoying it! I do miss your little sitting porch with your Bible teaching, hopes and dreams, poems and prayers. After the garden explodes, you'll find your place. I bless and love you and your family! Happy start to the day!

This may seem like a strange comment, but I'm so happy to not hear traffic on the road. Your in a much better space in South Carolina. I'm happy for you. I haven't watched much since the move (I like the garden tours). You're not only going to love the land, but you'll love the privacy and the silence. Enjoy it all. You deserve it!

💜 I have missed your garden tours! My garden is struggling this year. I live in Washington, just outside of Olympia and we had a crazy hot year last year but this year we have barely seen the sun. It has rained so much that anyone that is doing in ground planting is having all of their plants drown. I grow in raised beds so mine are surviving but my tomatoes have barely grown since transplant 2 weeks ago. I have had a garden for 8 or 9 years now. I enjoy every minute of it but having so many struggles makes it hard to not second guess yourself.

Love this. Thank you. I wish there was one every day, I watch them while I water. I got told today that everything I planted won't make it as the oppressive heat arrived early. I grew all my seed starts inside, took over my whole house and got them in after the last frost. This is year 2 here and I am feeling incredibly discouraged. It was so easy in San Francisco. Central Texas is another beast. I also have that same dress which was funny to me! Thank you for encouraging us.

I'm sure there are millions of people would be lining up to pay top dollar to enjoy a week or two of your lifestyle. Besides money considerations, it would be a great avenue for teaching and making new friends!

My favorite use for zucchini: CHOCOLATE ORANGE ZUCCHINI CAKE Favorite Recipes of the Sutton Families & Friends
    Ingredients:
    2 1/2 cups flour (unsifted)
    1 1/2 tsp. baking soda
    1/2 cup cocoa
    2 1/2 tsp. baking powder
    1 tsp. salt
    1 tsp. cinnamon
    3/4 cup soft butter
    2 cups sugar
    3 eggs
    2 tsp. vanilla
    2 tsp. grated orange rind
    2 cups coarsely shredded zucchini
    1/2 cup milk
1 cup chopped pecans or walnuts
Recipe instructions: Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Combine flour, cocoa, baking, powder, baking soda, salt, and cinnamon. Set aside. With mixer beat together the butter and sugar until they are smoothly blended. Add the eggs; one at a time, beating well after each addition. With a spoon, stir in the vanilla, orange peel, and zucchini. Alternately stir dry ingredients and the milk into zucchini mixture, including the nuts as a last addition. Pour into a greased & floured 10 inch tube pan or Bundt pan. Bake in oven at 350 degrees for about 1 hour or until wooden pick inserted in center comes out clean. Cool in pan 15 minutes. Turn out on wire rack to cool thoroughly. Drizzle glaze over top. Cut into thin slices to serve. GLAZE: Mix together 2 cups powdered sugar, 3 Tbsp. milk and 1 tsp. vanilla; beat until smooth.

I wanted to grow asparagus for YEARS. But every time I thought about it, it said ugh 3 years is a long time.
I finally planted it after being in that house 16 years and ended up selling the house less than a year later LOL
It's like the saying goes, the best time to plant a tree (or invest money) is yesterday. The second best time is today.
