He Got Kicked Out The Gun Range For Not Having Sights On His Gun

  • After the range officer asks him if he has iron sights for his firearm, and he responds, confused and says NO, he gets instructed that in order to shoot, he has to have sights.
After getting kicked out of the gun range, he then commented, "Why yall be on nuts about havin sights…DO WHAT YOU WANT WITH YOUR OWN FIREARM"
He thinks shooting an AR pistol without sites is not a big deal.
    Oh, but it is.
Not only is it a big deal, shooting without sights on an AR pistol is dangerous.
People don't realize how much AR pistols rise when you shoot them, especially when you're rapid firing.
By the 4th or 5th round, you went from shooting the target to shooting through the ceiling because you couldn't tell how much the gun was rising.
If you don't have sights, you're literally guessing where you're shooting. You think you're aiming at the target but you're actually aiming at the floor or the ceiling.
Now imagine doing this at an outdoor range. Not only will you miss the target, you'll end up sending rounds over the backstop into the public. That's why ranges don't let you shoot without sights on AR Pistols.
The ranges I go to, even if you have sites on your rifle, you have to pass a test before you can shoot on the long range because people will put sites on their rifle but they won't zero the rifle, which is almost as bad as not having sites at all.
Put sites on your guns and make sure your sites are zeroed; otherwise, you're just launching rounds that can travel up to 2.5 miles with no idea where they're going.
You don't want that on your conscious and you also don't want constant ringing in your ears because you did too much shooting with no hearing protection.
Which is why anytime I shoot, I always wear the AKT1 Blackouts, my favorite wireless in ear bluetooth hearing protection or as i call them, the Airpods of the shooting world.
With a certified NRR noise-blocking rating of 25db, you can listen to music and even take a phone call:
The Blackouts also have 6x hearing enhancement, 10 hours of use, and they're easy to use so click here and grab a pair today.

The front door says NO RAPID FIRE ...
Each lane has a sign that says NO RAPID FIRE ...
Every time i see the guys tell the customers before they walk in, NO RAPID FIRE ...
Sure enough after 5 minutes, some clown IS RAPID firing ...
One day i spent 3 hrs in the range and the guys had to scream over the loud speaker AND walk in and scream NO RAPID FIRE ...
Then you got the ones that show off to their GF or wifes when they rapid fire and end up hitting the line that holds the target and they have to shut the lanes down for repair ...

I admit that I am not normal when it comes to firearm use. If I stated my qualifications they would seem to be made up and I have been accused of "padding" my qualifications. Lets leave it at I am a 70 year old man who spent 15 years in the USMC until disabled and not allowed to re-enlist. From boot camp till discharge I maintained "expert" rifle and pistol status. When I went to BITs (Basic Infantry Training School), I familiarized with the Garand, BAR, the M-21, (M14-with Unertl 10X fixed), and qualified expert with basic M-14, Win Model 70 With same scope as the M-21. I famed with the Browning M-27, and the M-2.
I have, since discharged, fired a cloned USMC rifle course with an AR-10 style rifle, the M25(or XM25 for us marines, an upgrade to the M-21. Basically a match grade M-14 with more modern scope and scope mount) and the list goes on. I am an NRA qualified rifle, pistol and law-enforcement firearms instructor. I can list more but I have already lost more than half of the people who started reading this. My point is that I know a couple of things about shooting. Sights are not necessary to be able to handle a firearm, including a rifle. Early firearms did not even have twists (lands and groves) in them much less sights. Yet they were still used. I have hit a man sized target at 200 yards with an Model 70 with no sights ( I had taken the scope off) the basic rifle had no sights. Many people shoot shotguns with only a front "bead." I have hit an NRA full size B-27 target at 100 yards using A Rem 870 without sights. In close combat training I routinely used the point and shoot method.
When using a handgun with rifle caliber chamberings, it is problematic to start with. For a neophyte shooter to attempt this activity with no sights is beyond reason. However, I could handle that AR-pistol one handed with no sights and score a 400 on a USMC pistol qualification range. What I am saying is that shooting does not require sights. It requires training and safety monitoring/coaching during training when the shooter begins his journey in the shooting hobby/sport. Every shooter and that shooter's skills are different.
I believe in personal responsibility. That includes the ranges responsibility to their customers. If the range feels it is more safe to require all customer shooters to have sights on their firearms, then that is their rights on private property. Shooters without sights will just need to find a range that allows the training that the shooter requires.

Semper Fi brother, I'm a 79 year old Marine Sgt. When I was about 10 years old, my grandfather cut the sights off of my Daisy air rifle and then proceeded to teach me how to really shoot. Soon thereafter I was hitting quarter sized metal slugs that he was tossing into the air for me. At age 18 at Parris Island, I shot qualification with the M14 rifle with sites and was 2nd highest score of the company. A boy from West Virginia beat me by one point. If you know your firearm, really know it, you don't need sights. But few shooters ever approach that level of expertise. I now shoot my AR15 with optics, my 9mm with iron sights, but my S&W j-frame 38, well that basically has a groove down the top of the frame that isn't worth a damn for aiming. For that one, I point it where it needs to be and

I hear ya, especially on the longer range stuff. Range I go to has 450 yard targets for public, and if you do RSO training/volunteering like I and many others have, we also have a 1,000 yard range.
While doing my duty days to keep my RSO privileges, I've seen some weird shit. One of the more tame instances was a guy getting frustrated that the ballistic chart he got online wasn't right, despite having same ammo make/model, same barrel length and twist rate, as well as same optic. I asked him if when setting up his rifle if he also took bore axis height offset into account. He was all, "Bore what-now?"
I get it, man, you don't know what you don't know, and what you know is only as good as the information you're getting.
He was a tad embarrassed, but we got his rifle shooting consistently, and made his own holdover cheat sheet to stick in the lens cap. I reminded him that cheat sheet isn't an end all be all, because changing ammo type/brand, as well as ambient temperature, elevation/barometric pressure, humidity, and wind patterns will change point of impact over longer ranges, but it should be a decent table to get him near enough to his target to hit on the second shot and recalibrate for that time and place.
When I see a comment saying you shouldn't have to have some method of consistently aiming your firearm, I just think maybe you aren't ready to be a firearm owner/user yet, like a 2-year-old.

I remember one time a customer came in to the range I work at, we have a sights policy for all rifles. He shows me his rifle and I see that he has an optic and a front sight on it, no rear sight. So we let him onto the range. A short while later, I have to go have a chat with him. This dude shot up our target carrier, when I inspected his rifle I found he had removed the optic from it. I asked and he told me that he, "removed the sight so he could shoot [his] gun". He clearly saw sparks flying and for some reason thought nothing of it. We only asked him to reinstall the optic, rather than kick him off (even though we probably should have), and he shot just fine after that. Sights/optics are an essential component to any firearm and no firearm should be allowed on a range without them. Trying to shoot a firearm without sights is like trying to drive a car without a steering wheel - not that it can't be done, but it's gonna be a whole lot harder to do it.

Even a shotgun has some form of iron sights

    • @Chamdar17
      @Chamdar17 Месяц назад +5

not all shotguns have sights, many have nothing more than a bead at the end of the barrel, aiming is accomplished by sighting along the barrel itself, the end bead aids in windage and elevation adjustment but at typical ranges no such adjustment is necessary. For the distance he was shooting, sighting along the pic-rail, assuming it is properly installed, functions similarly if not better as the crown of each lift aids his alignment better than a bare barrel does, i.e. the pic-rail is his sight.

The Dunning-Kruger effect is a cognitive bias in which people with limited competence in a particular domain overestimate their abilities. It was first described by Justin Kruger and David Dunning in 1999.
Example 1: You watch a PGA tournament and think it's easy play golf. Crushing drives, precision chips and long putts should be simple. You are overly confident until you attempt to play your first round of actual golf.
Example 2: You've watched all the action movies and the good guys never seem to miss. You figure you'll be awesome -- a regular John Wick. Then a friend takes you to the range and you try out a 9mm handgun from 10 years and can't hit the target.
