    I love how throughout the show you're never really sure on the true depth of the relationship between Thorfinn and Askeladd until the very end where his death is depicted the exact same was as Thors, and you finally understand Thorfinn lost his 2nd father that day

      Good point but I don’t think that’s what they meant, since SPOILER
      Arnheid is depicted the same way

    The finale is such a good episode of tv. the moment he drops the knife and he sees his whole life reflected in it is so powerful man.

    Everything about the series is incredible, but what really endeared me to it was the emotional intensity of the music

    I love that Askeladd says "Become a true warrior, Son of Thors." If you remember, early on Thors said "A true warrior needs no sword" when he and his crew were ambushed by Askeladd. He knew what those words would mean to Thorfinn. He knew it would stick with him more than any other thing he could say to Thorfinn. I think he did have some twisted way, a sense of comradery and paternal care for Thorfinn and Thorfinn in his own twisted way, ended up seeing Askeladd as at the least a mentor, if not paternal figure. This show only gets deeper in season 2 as well. I can't wait for you to see it!

      Askellad was just a bad dad, but it would be silly to say bad dads don't love their sons, or that bad dads can't still contribute positively to their kids growth in one way or another. I love Askellad that way, in how detailed his character is.

      @@backinmydaycartoons7957 100% agree!!! He is one of the best and most impactful characters of the show. I'd argue the main character of Season 1 is Askeladd to an extent and that once he is dead the story truly transfers to Thorfinn.

      On a rewatch, it felt as though Askeladd meant it when he asked Thors to take over and lead them in Episode 4 (I think)... like he saw the Spirit of Artorius or something similar in him when he was talking about what it means to be a true warrior...
      Of course, that couldn't happen, so he reverted back to Mercenary Askeladd who made it into a clever joke...
      Askeladd didn't regret killing Thors, but did not do it gladly, nor would he have done it freely, imo

      @SolidSnake240 Месяц назад +1

      @@paulg.dunphy1501You're right. Askellad was 100% serious when he asked Thors to be their leader. It's even more obvious on a rewatch. Also the fact that Bjorn made a comment to the effect of "Askellad never jokes around like that." When he tells Thors that he was just joking to save face due to him turning the offer down. We also see throughout the story that Askellad has a particular talent for recognizing greatness in someone, like he did with Canut.

    What a finale. The maturity of the show only increases in the second season. Has some of the most emotional and powerful payoffs in a story I’ve seen in a long fucking time

    I love how different this season feels on a rewatch. You already know how smart and cunning Askeladd is, how well he plays everyone and masks his intentions/feelings. But you never suspect as the viewer, you too are being duped along with the rest of the characters. So excited for the next season

    I deliberately avoided watching the reactions until I had finished the show myself and I must say this was one of the most fantastic fictional journey's I've ever been on. I know you've probably seen S2 by now, I look forward to the youtube releases. Vinland is such a perfect show to watch after the peak of Attack on Titan.

      funny thing about s2 vs s1 is that if you compare it with live action shows s2 isn't slow at all it's very moderately paced, s1 is just very fast paced which is more common in anime and manga, and even then the beginning of s1 was already a lot slower than many animes, everything only got fast paced after ep6.

    Askellads insults in 22 are actually, for the first time, honest. He doesn't really need Thorfinn anymore, the kid who was a symbol to a man he wanted to follow, and a kid who he wanted to see rise to his fathers image and become someone Askellad would lay his life down for and serve. But Thorfinn never became that person, and then Canute shows up, and for the first time here, we see just how disappointed Askellad is in Thorfinn without any tricks trying to manipulate for some future plot.
    A kid who had a father worth 100 men in power and philosophy, a man who gave Thorfinn a good childhood, and spent his final moments not to protect himself and his son, but to teach his son a lesson at the cost of his life, only for that kid to become the same as any other norseman, the same as Askellad, no beauty.
