I love this video! I love the discussion of his style, the gear he used, which is something I was always curious about. His tone was as amazing as his playing style. He was much more tasteful than most players of the era, never overdid anything. Very well balanced. I used to tell my friends about Savatage and Chris' playing all the time. I'd buy them Hall of the Mountain King or Gutter Ballet. They all dug it. This is a band that always deserved greater success, and Chris deserves greater recognition. Yeah, I always wondered why the guitar mags never interviewed him. I thought it was a glaring omission in the world of dynamic rock guitar playing. Great video!

I’ll never forget the first time I heard Savatage on MTV in 87. Immediately bought Hall and Criss became one of my favorite guitar players at the time. Did not know he was snubbed by guitar player magazines. What a shame! RIP!

For me, Criss' most brilliant solo is the one on "Summer's Rain". Pure genius.

Alex Skolnick played the solos on the Handful of Rain album. Edge of Thorns was all Criss, who was a self-taught guitar player. Everyone loved him, kids wanted to be just like him.
He lives on through his music, his family and friends, and the forever increasing multitude of fans who idolize and adore him.
    Miss you Criss💙💙💙

I'm fairly certain Criss was classically trained. Not in guitar, but in some orchestral instrument.
I saw an article today about Jon and how he was in the talks for auditioning for the singer of Black Sabbath post-Dio but he was too loyal to his brother to leave Savatage.
I heard a similiar extension of their love for each other when Criss was supposedly offered an audition for Megadeth or Ellefson had asked him in private, but he refused. I know Mustaine has denied the audition claim, but I know Ellefson sings the highest praise for Criss.
I always equally loved Edge of Thorns + Doctor Butcher.

    • @SouthernSkeptic
      @SouthernSkeptic 3 года назад +2

@@xvinx2446 I don't think Criss was classically trained. He couldn't read music. I think he was a guitar savant.
Originally Jon played guitar and Criss played bass. One time Jon went away for the weekend and Criss got a hold of his guitar. When Jon returned Criss had learned how to play a certain classic rock song' solo perfectly. I forget what song it was. Criss was 9 years old.
Their older brother told Jon, "Just give him your guitars man."
I'll see if I can find that interview for you. Edited:
At 37:15 Jon tells the story of Criss discovering the guitar.

Thanks for doing this. Savatage was (and technically still is) my favorite band - a huge part of that was Criss and his remarkable playing. He had a way of making the guitar convey deep emotion. The drunk driver (Garth McNamee) in question had seven DUIs when he struck and killed Criss (and injured Dawn). He was ordered to pay $100 a month for what he'd done after serving his all too short prison sentence which wasn't even HALF the time he was sentenced for. After Dawn died, I'd wager he didn't have to pay that $100 a month. Not to Jon or anyone else who might be tied directly related to Criss. So not only did the drunk driver take Criss' life, eventually would result in Dawn's death (I assume, her cause of death was never fully revealed publicly - I know she suffered severe head injuries and multiple trauma in the crash), he was sentenced five years in prison to be followed by 10 years probation and 200 hours of community service - this drunk driver survived with minor injuries and was later found guilty of DUI manslaughter, DUI serious injury and vehicular homicide, and served 18 months.... 18 months. 18 freaking months. If this was his FIRST DUI - HIS FIRST - I can ALMOST see why they might be leant. But he had SEVEN PRIOR DUIs. SEVEN. So this was his EIGHTH time being drunk on the road. CLEARLY AN EFFING DANGER TO ANYONE ON THE ROAD. HOW DID HE GET OFF ON 18 MONTHS?!?? I will never ever understand it.

  • @AyBi_Studio

How did you miss the ESP Mirage Custom that was painted with Jackson logo on the headstock? The Gargoyle guitar is actually an ESP and not a Jackson, since he was endorsed by them and couldn't part with it (was his favorite guitar). Also, his right hand technique was one of the best in the business, minimum motion, precise. Also used steel picks according to some sources, and Bartolini pickups.
Plus, he had a signature Charvel guitar - the Predator, white body, bolt on, maple neck, reversed headstock, only volume knob, 22 frets. It's the same guitar that has the roses and is well known after his death.
The most underrated player of all time, period. To this day, I don't understand how the guitar community doesn't talk about him. He is on the top of the list for me.

This was great!🤘🥲🎸🌹I know a lot of folks lament over the fact that Savatage and Criss were “underrated” (I hate that term anymore these days😜) but to me I think it just adds that much more to the magical essence of this unbelievably amazing band. I still remember the feeling I got the first time that I ever heard my first Savatage tape, Streets. It was like they knew my soul🤘😝🤘I also sometimes wonder, as horrific as it was to lose Criss… would Trans-Siberian Orchestra even exist?? I believe that TSO is Criss’s gift, from God, to us. Amen🙏❤️‍🔥RIP Criss and Paul. See you on the other side…❤️

Fact I was there and saw it and partied till sun up at the motel 6 with the whole group. They were from Pinellas Park Fla. YAMAHA SOLID STATE FOOLS.
