The Iron Duke is now a listed building because of its history and unique art deco architecture. It is being compulsory purchased by the Heritage Trust and I assume plans are afoot to restore it. It was designed by E Ecclestone, Lacons Brewery main architect. I went to school locally and for the younger years, it was the turning point for cross country to return to school. You picked a lovely day, great to hear the skylarks which nest amongst the dunes.

Good to hear, we had a few in there back in the mid 80's (sure it was 1984 and 85) when Caister Soul Weekender was on before it moved to Vauxhall, and always remember The Iron Duke, and was glad to see it still standing during our Wild Duck Yarmouth Holidays several years ago

    👍Great Memories here between 1975-1983.
Apart from its location between the racecourse
and the beach I now recognise nothing as it has changed so much.
Back then the caravans were blue and white with blue curtains and I used to spend hours on the horse racing game stall where you would roll balls into holes to make the horses move and the bell would ring when someone won and then all the horses would go back to their starting positions.
Kids were easily entertained in the mid 70’s…
    😆

We stayed there back in the very early 90's, when Warner Holidays owned it.
We arrived after a 6.5hr drive from Merseyside, only for my dad to announce that the Distribution Cap on our 1989 G-Reg Maestro needed replacing before we could go home! We managed to get one from the local Austin Rover dealer and he spent an hour fixing the car!
The beaches there are amazing, and so clean.
Very happy memories of staying there in a very nice caravan. Loads to do on the site, and a great nightclub for the kids at the time!
Thanks for the trip down amnesia drive Tim!

  • @norfolknchance.500
    @norfolknchance.500 3 года назад +6

    Little point of interest perhaps!?
I worked on the site during the 90's (Warner Bros era) first 2 years running quads and go cart tracks (sadly gone now) and following 2 years on site security.
Few people realise that the entire site is a public right of way (security will tell you otherwise), as it is wholly built on sand dunes and the land is leased to the site, hence the reason it has not been enclosed with fencing etc, and even the road through the site is a public highway, and is subject to the same laws as the open road!
And as photography is legal in the public domain, they can't tell you not to film, on this site anyway!
Lived Yarmouth and surrounding all my life (50+ years), and huge interest in its history, and loving your content, even if I do put you right about rivers, or maybe with other odd facts from time to time! Haha!
And "limelight" and " Follies", that took me back!

Played keys in one of the resident bands here in 1988. Camp had a poor reputation then, and was often in the tabloid newspapers. The then camp manager Mr Pinkney, would go and buy all the newspapers in the local shops to save his blushes on site.

Last time I went to Seashore was back in 2015, and though I had a nice time, it was nothing like how it was in my childhood. Everything was so commercialized and fake.

Stayed there in May 1980 during Spring Bank week in May and enjoyed it very much. However, the following year we stayed at the Caister park and enjoyed it even more - every year until 1988. What sticks in the mind at Seashore that week was a massive thunderstorm outside while we were watching the European Cup final on the caravan TV, and my sister and a friend toppling over on one of those two-seater bicycle contraptions that they'd hired on the camp 😂

During the Second World War there was once a Coastal Artillery Battery located at Seashore before it was a Holiday park. Constructed in 1940
It was equipped with 2× 6 inch naval guns. There were two where the guns were located at the northern end of North drive. There were underground entrances to inside the Battery with Camouflage netting. Also searchlight implements associated with the battery.
By February 1941 it was protected landward side by extensive barbed wire defences. Two hexagon Pillboxes/Bunkers were built to provide ground and light Anti Aircraft defence for the site. The first was located to the west side of the Battery and was surrounded by a earth bank. The second was located on the beach with once side built against the sea wall. This still partly survives which you can see as that large concrete structure now in cladding poking out of the sea wall at 2:25
The site remained untouched with only sections of barbed wire and beach scaffolding being removed in 1946. By April 1952 the the guns had been demolished along with the Pillboxes and the majority of other defences. The rest of the battery buildings were demolished with only 4 surviving in 1988 having been joined together to create one long building. But these were demolished by 2002. The only building on the actual battery site (now Holiday park) that survives today is a L shaped building which use was still unknown. Although it's possible the original building was demolished and a new building following the original foundation built in its place.
Now nothing (apart from the Pillbox by the sea wall) survive.
Hope you found this interesting as I certainly have having been to Seashore loads of times. 😊

Yes, right at the top end of the town near Caister Golf course. The blue slide can often been seen from the Caister to Yarmouth road and the golf course. And just within walking distance of the old Iron Duke pub which is up for saving. They just need to salvage the now derelict Winter Gardens now.

I took a photo of the coast watch place in 1967, one of my first ever photos, and in 1967 had a 2 week holiday at the site, think its mostly completely different now.

I have stayed here on a few occasions. I think it’s a high quality park but it is stupidly expensive with COVID etc. I love the Buildings they look Jamaican or something like that.

We stay at Easter Beach at Caister when we go, if the weather is decent we walk from the caravan park through to Great Yarmouth, it’s a lovely walk & it always tires the kids out 😁

We went as a family 30 years ago when I was 13. The one thing I remember is the helicopters overhead regularly. My parents wished they had booked Caister instead. I remember my mum tried archery, she missed the target and got the arrow in the building behind the target 😆
I looked at prices for other parks in the company, and the prices are very high this year, probably as it’s a captive market and trying to make up for lost revenue last year.

I lived near this site in the 80s and used to go in here as a kid even though I was a local ha ha. The clubs in the pavilion now used to be called the mermaid and the beachcomber from memory!

There was a holiday park that I visited with family twice in 1996 that if I remember rightly was north up the coast from Great Yarmouth and was right next to the sea on top of a cliff with a very long zig zag walk down to the beach. I remember it having a lot of trees scattered between the caravans, especially round the entrance. I would have been about 11 years old and can't remember the name or even if I'm remembering any details right.
