Mr Paul Shelnutt is dancing our heritage. Buck dancing, clogging & flat footing dancing as well as our Old Time Bluegrass music came over to VA, TN, NC, &KY by our Scottish-Irish ancestors in the 1600s. We are proud of our heritage and we sure will miss Paul this year at the Bluegrass festivals. God rest his soul. He passed away at the age of 70 this past Oct. When this Video was made he was only 62. So it really bothers us here in the south when people call him an OLD MAN. This is degrading him. Thanks for your nice comment. Thank you . I couldn't take my eyes and ears off of the musicians or the dancers. I just love things that connect back to our heritage and a simpler way of life. This Summertown festival was by far the one where I had the most fun plus there were so many pick'n circles to enjoy playing with. There was one group of kids, the oldest may have been 17, that had a player for each of the typical bluegrass instruments. I was blown away when I heard them playing in their own pick'n circle. Their musicianship and skill level on each of their instruments was way beyond their age level.

I watched this earlier today and it has gotten stuck in my head. But my dogs seem to think I sound pretty good!
I'm from the Bronx, but I love this stuff, especially the silver guy with mismatched socks. I would love to see this in person and maybe join in the dancing. This looks fun. I'm tired of pop, rap, rock, salsa, merengue, freestyle, and other music.
I’m shocked that a person of color would post that they like this. Just like they had “Whites Only” signs they had signs that said “ No Mexicans or Spanish people “ allowed. This was the only dance the slaves were allowed to do at special occasions. This can be considered a review of history, or racist as hell. I am Paul's eldest child and only daughter. I just saw this. I danced with my dad from the time I could stand. I know who taught him and why he dressed the way he did. He was 75 when died, not 70. All my sons have danced with him, even entered competitions with him. Dad won more competitions than I can count. I even won a few. An accident at my job took away my dancing days. My boys have placed a time or 2. None of them dance anymore. However, they all wanted to at his funeral. One last time for Pawpaw. I don't know if I will ever get over losing him. Due to Covid I'm not certain if this very large twice per year festival is still being held. You can Google it and find out by searching for: The Summertown Bluegrass Festival. (In TN) Also there's a big bluegrass blowout once each year at Mountain View, AR. Even when the blowout isn't going on they have bluegrass jams nearly every Friday and Saturday night. They have it on the town square. The musicians huddle up in pick'n circles of 4-8 musicians and there are several of these circles. There's a concessions vender or two, the kids are completely safe playing tag, hide and seek, and catching light'n bugs as the older women sit in lounge chairs and knit while enjoying the music and each other's company. There are campgrounds, cabins for rent, motels, and B&B all in the area.

I've accomplished some goals, lost weight, getting into better physical shape and other things but I haven't found the discipline yet to fit everything in. We'll see. Retirement is still a work in progress, but I'm loving it.

With the Covid restrictions I'm not certain if the Summertown festival will happen. You do know they have one over the Labor Day weekend and one over the 4th of July weekend. Both last four days. I moved to Jonesboro, AR last year and need to check on the Pick'n in the Park festival held in Village Creek State Park between Wynn and Forrest City. It's on Crowley's Ridge and is a beautiful park with camping. This four day festival is held twice each year (unless Covid has changed that) and though smaller than Summertown is a lot of fun. It is held on the first weekend in May and if memory serves me, over Labor Day weekend. The one in May has a better attendance. I hope this helps.

It’s so neat how many genres of music that were created in the US. Bluegrass is a combination of multiple cultures including Irish, African, and Native American. The banjo originated in Africa, the jigs from Ireland/Scotland, and some steps/rhythms from Natives.
I just Googled Paul Shelnutt 's obituary, and I was surprised to find out that he was a Vietnam veteran. So, Paul Shelnutt, thank you for your service to our country.
I had such a fun time playing my guitar with all the various pick'n circles. There was about 2,500 musicians there playing in groups of 4-8 each day of this four day festival.
Yeah he's won many Buck dancing championships he died a couple years ago but he was a real nice guy and boy that dude can flat out shuffle them feet I wondered about those socks and if you were different colored socks so that he could keep up with which was the left and which was the right or who knows lol.
Sadly Paul Shelnutt, the legendary mixed socks dancer, passed away on Oct 24, 2021. I thank him for the joy he gave others, may he rest in peace.
That is sad. He was such a nice and fun guy.

Well, not exactly. We do our own thing. We love rockabilly and dance to that and we do something similar when we dance to Bluegrass.

Yeah he's won many Buck dancing championships he died a couple years ago but he was a real nice guy and boy that dude can flat out shuffle them feet I wondered about those socks and if you were different colored socks so that he could keep up with which was the left and which was the right or who knows lol.
