Ultraman was my introduction to the world of Eiji Tsuburaya. I was around 6 years old when it first started showing on tv, and there had been nothing else like it. This was the show that started my love of Japanese science fiction and fantasy, as well as the giant monster genre in general. I will always watch this series with the memories of the 6 year old who had to wait almost 20 years after it left the air to see any other Ultra based show.
Ultraseven was the second show I saw (the TNT version), and is probably still my overall favorite. But there's some pretty solid competition from other series.
Fun-fact: Teruo Aragaki, who played Gamera from 1965-1968, portrayed about 15 monsters from Ultraman. Including Red King, Hydra, Bemular, Pestar and Zetton.
@19:58-20:25 And I thought that the lady who said, "there are no such things as monsters" in *"Trakeena's Revenge"* of Power Rangers Lightspeed Rescue was the only stupid character in Tokusatsu history. These kids will give her a run for her money.
Ahh Ultraman vs Jirras. This fight alone is what brought to the Ultra series. And it was the very first series I completed and owned on DVD for a very long time. And I'm glad I was able to own it on Blu Ray last month. Though what's interesting is that when re watching it, I found my self enjoying a lot of the later episodes much more then the first Hafh. Though it's not perfect for pretty much the same reasons you state on your video. But hey at least episodes 22 and 24 subs are timed corectly. 😊
Lol it dose get better. And I'm so glad that mill creek is been giving us Blu rays of this series. The one I'm looking forward to the most is ultraman ace since he's easily my favorite in the showa era. Heck I still own the 8 bootleg disk that I got 9 years ago. With half of the episodes dubed in English and the other Hafh being japense with out any subtitles. No I'm not kidding this is actually real.
I like Leo a lot actually since it felt the most muture besides Ultraseven. And even then there are a few more hatred moments in it. If I where to rate them it would be. 80, then Ultraman, then Leo, then Ultraseven, then Jack aka returned and finally Ace. Though your view may be different. I'll look forward to those review. (Suhawch!!!)
Thanks for another informative review. I just watched this for the fun of it; grew up with Ultraman, and know it like the back of my hand. It is true that Fuji is stuck in the chauvinist scripts of 1960s Japan, but hey, at least she got to pilot a Science Patrol air/spacecraft now and then, which is more than 1960s Star Trek would allow. Speaking of Star Trek...pretty cool that Ultraman had Science Patrol members using their lapel pins for communication 20+ years before Star Trek did. Thanks again, and I look forward to your UltraSeven review, which I'm sure you have here somewhere. :)
Yep, I have reviewed Seven, and Return for the original series so far. Ace is arriving hopefully tomorrow, so look foward to that sometime next month. I have also reviewed Ultra Seven X, Towards the Future, X, Orb, Orb Origin, and Geed.
I guess technically yes, but Ultraman was the one that everyone decided to compete with like how technically Psycho is the first slasher film but Halloween was the one that launched the genre.
I like your picks for favorite episodes. Some others I would add were the Jamila episode, (a pretty well done tragic monster story), The Alien Zarab episode (Felt very Outer Limits or Twilight Zone esq with how creepy Zarab was and I loved just how truly alien his design was), and the Telesdon/underground race one. (Another very well done Outer Limits/Twilight Zone esq episode with how unsettling and creepy the atmosphere was and all the great unique camera angles.)
When I did this review, the Telesdon episode was pretty much unwatchable for me due to the extremely mistimed subs. Thanks to that being corrected on the Blu-Ray that one would have been a contender had I reviewed the show then.
With Chaiyo defeated by Tsuburaya productions, we will get Ultra Q, Ultraman, Ultra Seven and many others in its remastered form on Blu-ray here in the US.
I can totally relate to your frustration over Captain Marvel being recoined as Shazam. It's not only stupid (as it was also a weakness originally. He couldn't say it without transforming) but it also just feels incredibly lazy on the writer's part. Need to call him something new? umm... i dunno he say's shazam a lot. let's make it that!
Was it just me or did the English Dub they included with the DVD release seem to be incomplete because the copies I have seem to jump back and forth between English and Japanese
snakes3425 as far as I'm aware, the dvd are the unedited episodes, and the English dub was for an edited version, hence minor bits of Japanese for the portions with no dub.
The final episode was originally going to have Zoffy kill Zetton after Ultraman's defeat (which would have been Zetton smashing Ultraman's Color Timer to pieces). An earlier draft had Zetton as simply a side monster that Ultraman would kill quickly as a warm-up to the real Monster of the Week Saigo. However, the production team had realized that Zetton's design was simply too good to waste, so Saigo was demoted to a side monster to appear alongside Kiyla. This still lingers in Zetton's title "Space Dinosaur", which was intended for Saigo, who got "Sand Pit Monster" instead.
the reason hoshino wasn't in the rest of the series because the actor broke his leg while he was on a skiing trip,so he didn't appear in the latter half of the series.
Do you mean in general, or just from this series? If it is just from this series, like I said in the review, Pestar for Kaijus and Mefilas for Aliens. Least favorite Kaiju is Gamakujira while I don't really have a least favorite alien. If you mean in general, then it is a toss up between Metron, Mefilas, and King Joe.
This show was a fun start to the Ultra Francis going forward. I felt really invested and I had a lot of fun and I was sad when I was finished. Out of the episodes I loved episode with Seabozu because that episode was a little bit sad. He didn't want to hurt anyone he just wanted to got back to space and I think he was also in pain too I don't know. That episode was the one that I was looking forward to watching and it ended up being to my liking.
What are your thoughts on that comet episode with Dorako, Gigass and Red King? That episode's one of my faves considering that it's got alot of monster action in it and has a better Ultraman vs Red King fight than in the episode where they fought on that monster-infested island.
@@TokuAndAnimationNewsNetwork The reason why that comet episode's one of my favorite episodes is because it's got not one but three monsters in it (i.e. Dorako, Gigass and Red King) add to the fact that all three monsters confront and fight each other makes it even more iconic and unforgettable. Ultraman (1966) was an old show that back then really didn't need viewer to care about story being driven. They just wanted some action, fun and monster fight. So I agree with you that you dont need to watch previous episode in order to enjoy each episode.
Yeah, but it still would have been cool. Though, I do feel like Ultraman is the last franchise to catch up with the times since they didn't start being story driven until Ginga's second season.
Nice review. I'm looking forward to see you talk about Ultraseven, it's one of my favorites. Also, the reason that Isamu wasn't in the second half was because the actor broke his leg.
Ah, that makes sense and sucks. They should have had him at least appear in an episode with a broken leg and have Muramatsu tell him he is going to have to recover before he can rejoin the Science Patrol or something to make it seem like he didn't just vanish into thin air. Thanks for the info on that as I saw nothing to tell me such. UltraSeven has been a favorite of mine since I discovered it in the early 90s.
One of the most iconic japanese superhero shows ever made considering that it was the first appearance of Ultraman! Add to the fact that it's got cool-looking monsters in it makes it even more iconic and popular! My favorite episodes are lawless monster zone and mystery comet tsuiphon as well as the Telesdon episode and the two-parter episode with Gomora and my favorite monsters are Dorako, Gomora and Red King and Telesdon. What are your thoughts on my favorite episodes and monsters?
I'll let you know after I refresh my memory of them with the new Blu-Ray release. I don't remember either one at all right now. Wasn't a fan of Telesdon, but that's because the episode had mistimed subs, so my enjoyment of it was heavily impacted.
Shout! Factory is a fantastic company that has been going above and beyond your standard companies. I love that they have put out almost the entire John Carpenter collection on BD (wish they would do a box set) and their Sentai releases are getting better despite the occassional mishap.
Kaiju no Kami I have one of there blu rays q the winged serpent it’s ok no bonus features and Sound is pretty bad that I can’t tell what there saying without hiring my tv full volume. There’s no subtitles
Essential is kind of hard because there are many you could go through. I always consider the first few episodes and last few as always being essential. Beyond that, it's hard since I don't really remember the episode numbers off the top of my head at this point for those shows, especially Ace, which I've dumped on the memory wayside. I want to say it's 37 and 38 of Return that are definitely important, which is a two parter with Nackle and Black King that makes major plot changes. For Seven, I want to say episdoe 25 is the one with Alien Pole, who cause Seven to be weaker throughout the remainder of the series.
8:40,funny enough...Jiren looks like an Ultraman if he were a Sentai character. 12:34,Chidogerah,is that you?! 22:08,the infamous episode where it was Zoffy that gave the Blue stone but then they retroactively say that Ultraman NOAH was the one who gave it. It's a really weird thing.
@@TokuAndAnimationNewsNetwork Yeah..about that..The Ultra continuity is a hilarious one. ultra.fandom.com/wiki/The_Blue_Stone_of_Baradhi It was originally meant to be that but then thanks to Ultraman Zero,Noa gave the Baraji stone so Zero can access his Ultimate form so he can take out Belial once and for all: ultra.fandom.com/wiki/Baradhi
Kaiju no Kami well the showa era ones the quality looks good unfortunately it is only in Japanese which I don’t care but others might which I know you don’t own since you hate most of the older gamera movies
Do you plan on doing the other Ultraman series? Not all of them, there's so many but maybe the showa era ones and like one of the more modern ones like Mebius or even X Baisically, do whatever you want.
I'm doing Ultra Seven next. The only way I'll review Mebis, X, Orb, etc, is if they are released on DVD or BD since Crunchyroll owns the official license in the US. I'm not going to use illegal copies/fansubs for stuff that is licensed.
Ultraman's designer, Tohl Narita, expressed dislike at the addition of the Color Timer on Ultraman's chest, because he felt that it looked tacked-on (his original design never incorporated one; the Color timer was a last-minute addition for the sake of giving Ultraman a weakness). The idea of Ultraseven's Head Lamp acting as a warning light was his attempt to fix this. He was reluctant to open the eyeholes under Ultraman's eyes, but was forced to do so to ensure the suit actor's visibility. Again, he would fix this problem by incorporating the eyeholes as Ultraseven's pupils. Bin Furuya, Ultraman's suit actor, has expressed reluctance at even pretending to hurt Jamila.
Most likely as Tsuburaya just won their series back from Chaiyo two days ago in an LA court. As such, Chaiyo no longer owns the first 6 Ultra shows, which means Shout! and Millcreek's licenses are now done unless Tsuburaya themselves gives it to them.
i think the powers thing is mostly just light manipulation, by manipulating light particals he can usually have different beams and other forms of attack powers
Do you think the plot of the Telesdon episode was the inspiration for the plot in Godzilla vs. Megalon? I mean both involved underground humanoids kidnapping one of the main characters so they can use said main character to help them with their evil plans to destroy humanity while unleashing their monster god to destroy humanity.
Nice. I watched Ultra Seven when I was 8 as well and then of course Power Rangers when it came out in 92. However, I didn't really get into Toku itself until about 2003 when I watched Gaoranger, Dairanger, Zyuranger, and Kamen Rider Ryuki.
I got found memory's of watching this show with my grandmother after eating cookies on a rainy day a friend who knew I liked kaiju films. its was hokey but to be honest there were a few touching episodes such as the monster who had the sprit of a boy who died in a car accident and the scientist who doesn't like people and shows to die with the monster he created. theres a few others
Ah yes. If my review hadn't already been jam packed with stuff, I was going to take the scene from Gamera vs Guiron where the kid says he wants to live in a world without traffic accidents and put it with a scene from that episode.
I have a question regarding those DVD's you had in the beginning. I recognize Ultraseven, Super Sentai, Super Inframan, and I can make out Masked Rider (Ultraseven is the only one I have any real knowledge about). I can't make out the last dvd though? I'd love to know what it is.
Just started watching the first episode of ultraman on tubi tonight and it's pretty delightful and charming, the special effects are great, the characters are delightful except for fuji and the music is epic.
I know that Volumes 1, 2, and 4 are available on Amazon. They're the Japanese version with English subtitles as well. Volume 3 might be available there as well, but I haven't found it yet.
lol I didn't think Red King was anything special. As for the Baltan, they barely had a personality. Mefilas, on the other hand, had some great conversations going, had some character development, and didn't lose.
@@TokuAndAnimationNewsNetwork Baltan in later Ultraman shows is amazing. Trust me, you'll like Baltan and Red King a lot more the more of Ultraman you watch. Unfortunately, they did ruin Mephilas in modern Ultraman.
I'm glad you regarded Gomora as a definite positive for the Kaiju in Ultraman. Gomora is EASILY the most popular Ultra-Verse Kaiju of all time. Probably one of the biggest reasons for that is because he was the first Kaiju to ever BEAT Ultraman.
I actually just really got into Ultraman this year. Like I loved what I saw of Seven when I was a kid and then watched Tiga when I had the DVDs about ten years ago, but that was pretty much it. It wasn't until Cruellica Kain and I went to see the movie double feature in theaters back in Jan when I got back into the franchise.
Yeah the special effects are good overall. Its mainly just many of the monsters which seem more static and goofy looking. It definitely bothers me to see them move so fast and their body to be stiff as it becomes very clear that its just a guy in a suit. Jirass is obviously just Godzilla with yellow makeup and a piece of lettuce on his neck lol. Not all the monsters are bad though, I think some of them are neat. And regardless, all of the monsters seem like they are worthy kaiju classics.
See, I've gotten a mixed vibe on that with Captain Marvel and Billy. Until recently, I always felt Captain Marvel was a separate entity using Billy's body, but I get what you saying.
@@TokuAndAnimationNewsNetwork The pre Tiga Ultramen bascially take over the human hosts when called up or in some other adapts like the Hanna-Barbara collab they take over when their human hosts are in a life threating position. It was the HB version that got me fimiilar with Ultraman. Not a not of people on North America knew about Ultraman. Ask Jerry O'Connell (really) about that one.
Honestly, no. I just don't see an American adaptation of Ultraman working. Plus, would they be able to go through Tsuburaya or have to deal with Chaiyo?
I strongly disagree. A property as big as Ultraman is long overdue for a formal introduction into the mainstream western mindset. Can you give me your reasons why you think it won’t work?
There were two US versions already-Powered,which Tsuburaya would refuse to let air due to their issues with the show's poor quality, and a coproduced film by Tsuburaya and Hanna Barbera called Ultraman The Adventure Begins with THREE Ultras called Chuck, Todd and Beth. That did air,and when I saw it on tv in the late 80s on a syndicated channel I was like "Nah,son."
@@TokuAndAnimationNewsNetwork True, but the Millcreek DVDs had a lot more compression and technical issues, I just checked the subtitles on episodes 22 and 24 and the subtitles do not suffer this time delay issue on the BCI DVDs
Yeah, I figured BCI's release didn't have the subtitle issues. I'm just going to wait it out for a proper release before I buy the show again since Tsuburaya's court case is over with.
There’s a reason on why people still like the original ultraman series to this day and while I will admit it’s not a perfect series I can definitely see why it’s an iconic show with its fun and creative stories and memorable monsters and aliens (my personal favourite monsters are red king and gomora and my favourite aliens are dada and zetton) and while yeah it’s not without its flaws like non of the characters really develop and the effects can look dated but then again not every first instalment of a franchise will be perfect overrall I think the original ultraman series is a really good show and it’s one of the main reasons on why the franchise is still going strong to this very day
Personally my favourite episodes were 1. The lawless monster zone 2. The prince of monsters parts 1 and 2 3. The littlest hero 4. Farewell ultraman 5. Human specimens 5. And 6. 6. My home is earth

Kaiju no Kami Yeah, that would have been a good idea.
I am also looking forward to seeing Kaiju no Kami talk about Ultraseven since it's also one of my favorites.
When ultra man fights jirass will probably the closest thing we get and Godzilla and ultra man fight
Most likely.
There was also episode 15 which was a tribute for the birthday of godzilla and had gomess be the ultra kaiju to represent godzilla
Isn't there a reboot somewhere?
Ultraman The Next was kind ofa movie reboot.
Have you seen ultra q if so what are your thoughts
I have not seen it yet. I plan to rectify that with the upcoming BD.
What do you think of shout factory
Kaiju no Kami what do you think of the mothra blu ray by mill creek
It's great. As great as that movie is going to get.
Dude fuji was a hottie apparently. You can't see that
What does that have to do with the writing of her character?
Which episodes of this series along with Ultra Q and Ultraseven to Ultraman Taro do you consider essential?
Essential is kind of hard because there are many you could go through. I always consider the first few episodes and last few as always being essential. Beyond that, it's hard since I don't really remember the episode numbers off the top of my head at this point for those shows, especially Ace, which I've dumped on the memory wayside.
I want to say it's 37 and 38 of Return that are definitely important, which is a two parter with Nackle and Black King that makes major plot changes. For Seven, I want to say episdoe 25 is the one with Alien Pole, who cause Seven to be weaker throughout the remainder of the series.
@@TokuAndAnimationNewsNetwork ok can I watch all of them then?
Of course.
Can you do a review of the mysterians please
It's on my plans for things to review later on this year.
Ok Thanks
Good news for you. The Mysterians will be my next review. I just finished my script for it.
8:46-8:49 I wish somebody would do an Ultraman x Dragon Ball fanfiction crossover.
That could be cool.
Was it established as being Zoffy?
@@TokuAndAnimationNewsNetwork Yeah..about that..The Ultra continuity is a hilarious one. ultra.fandom.com/wiki/The_Blue_Stone_of_Baradhi
It was originally meant to be that but then thanks to Ultraman Zero,Noa gave the Baraji stone so Zero can access his Ultimate form so he can take out Belial once and for all: ultra.fandom.com/wiki/Baradhi
Mill creek did a fantastic job on the gamera Blu-rays
Mostly. They screwed up the subtitles of the third movie and then the subs still weren't even fully fixed for their third correction.
Kaiju no Kami well the showa era ones the quality looks good unfortunately it is only in Japanese which I don’t care but others might which I know you don’t own since you hate most of the older gamera movies
Do you plan on doing the other Ultraman series?
Not all of them, there's so many but maybe the showa era ones and like one of the more modern ones like Mebius or even X
Baisically, do whatever you want.
I'm doing Ultra Seven next. The only way I'll review Mebis, X, Orb, etc, is if they are released on DVD or BD since Crunchyroll owns the official license in the US. I'm not going to use illegal copies/fansubs for stuff that is licensed.
Kaiju no Kami I believe Mebius is on DVD but it's much harder to find especially with subs, not sure about Ginga, X and Orb though
Did shout factory lose the rights to ultraman because it's not on shout factory's website anymore
Could be.
It's possible since they were ripping off Ultraman with Jet Jaguar.
Who is your favorite Kaiju in Ultraman
Monster specifically? Dinosaur Tank, probbaly.
@@TokuAndAnimationNewsNetwork Thank you
6:05 What?! That's not a blue ball?!
lol Yeah, I forgot the blue ball was Bemlar and never even realized my mistake until it was too late.
Kaiju no Kami it's OK and btw I know toku heroes when I was like 8 years old.
Nice. I watched Ultra Seven when I was 8 as well and then of course Power Rangers when it came out in 92. However, I didn't really get into Toku itself until about 2003 when I watched Gaoranger, Dairanger, Zyuranger, and Kamen Rider Ryuki.
I don’t get when is in episode 38 of 39 mean
Huh?
Kaiju no Kami when it says episode 38 of 39 in the video what does that mean
Suprisingly noa is mentioned in antlar's episode
Yep.
Great review
Thanks.
I have a question regarding those DVD's you had in the beginning. I recognize Ultraseven, Super Sentai, Super Inframan, and I can make out Masked Rider (Ultraseven is the only one I have any real knowledge about). I can't make out the last dvd though? I'd love to know what it is.
In the beginning of what? It's been a long time since I've watched this review, what's the time stamp?
@@TokuAndAnimationNewsNetwork 1:52
I have the BCI DVDs of Ultraman volumes one and two.
Nice.
If that was Godzilla I think ultra man might have a problem on his hands
lol
What do you think of dragon ball z
Love the manga, tolerate the anime.
I could'nt imagine what life would be like if we didnt have godzilla, let alone that it inspired ultraman, kamen rider, and super sentai/power rangers.
Also till this day i would love to see a female lead ultra and kamen rider, cuz that is long overdue.
I don't see it happening honestly. It's Japan.
True, good review.
Thanks.
Like kamen rider i can't wait for more of your ultraman reviews even their movies.
1:52 that includes Power Rangers because without Ultraman Haim Saban wouldn't adapt Power Rangera if Super Sentai existed.
?
Technically we wouldn't have super sentai ,kamen rider ,or power rangers if i weren't for spider man 😂😂😂
That's not entirely true as Kamen Rider and Sentai came out before the Spider-Man Toei series.
Just started watching the first episode of ultraman on tubi tonight and it's pretty delightful and charming, the special effects are great, the characters are delightful except for fuji and the music is epic.
Fuji is definitely not exactly the best writing for a female character, but she does have some good moments.
Happy thanksgiving
Same to you.
for me the telesdon episode is the one with weird subtitles.
Which episode is that one again? I only remember having mistimed subs during two episodes. The one with the underground people and the water one.
the underground one. The water episode for me has it the subtitle problem temporarily.
Interesting.
i think i have a explanation for the orange jumpsuits maybe the designer was really wasted when he designed them
lol
Kaiju No Kami, if you do any other Ultraman series, please do Ultraman Tiga.
If I can manage to acquire the old DVDs to the series, I will. If not, probably not until it's been rereleased.
I know that Volumes 1, 2, and 4 are available on Amazon. They're the Japanese version with English subtitles as well. Volume 3 might be available there as well, but I haven't found it yet.
Volume 3 is rare and goes for high prices due to it containing an anniversary episode.
It's not ultraman it's gekkou kamen in 1958. He is the great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great ,great, great grandfather of Tokusatsu.
When someone who watches the show doesn't pick Red King or Baltan as one of their favorites. BLASPHAMY.
lol I didn't think Red King was anything special.
It helps that he had a 2 parter to his name. :-)
isn't kamen rider the first henshin hero and ultraman the for kyodai hero
Mostly.
A camel gone wild? Call moose finbar
lol Or Conan.
lol I can’t get the theme song out of my head myself. I personally think it’s good though.
hahahahahaha. That's how I am with both the themes to Seven and Tiga.
Since I’m smart and have not bought the dvd now I can Buy the blu ray instead
Nice review.
Thanks. :-)
Hey Kaiju no Kami there is also Hyper Zetton if you didn't know about.
Is that the one from Orb?
Nope, he is in Ultraman Saga.
Ah, haven't seen that one yet.
Yep, I'm a toku kid.
For me I'm easily able to look past the cheapness due to how much I enjoy the writing.
Great review one of my favorite ultra man shows👍
Glad you enjoyed it.
dude those uniforms are the bees knees! come on! lol
:-D
Hiroko Sakurai was co-starring in 'Shin Megami Tensei Devil Summoner'.
Cool.
Kaiju no Kami However, Hiroko co-starred up to the Episode X (altogether it contains 25 episodes).
Episode X of Devil SUmmoner?
Kaiju no Kami Well, I meant she appears from the first to tenth episodes of Devil Summoner.
Gotcha.
There is a reason why he is called Shazam. It has to due a complicated issue between the two Captain Marvels,
I know.
Shazam is the super powered adult version of Billy Batson. Up until Tiga the Ultramen are their own person.
You knock her for her actions back then but today she would be defended
Defended for what?
Do you think it would be cool if Legendary Pictures acquired the rights to Ultraman.
By that logic, Legendary should not have picked up the rights to Godzilla and re-launch the character just because of how the Tristar film turned out.
I grew up with the BCI DVDs and they are so much better then the Millcreek DVDs
I bet. Though, they both come from the same masters from Chaiyo.
@@TokuAndAnimationNewsNetworkWhen do you think we will get a US blu ray release. (This would be a great Toho Kingdom discussion)
There’s a reason on why people still like the original ultraman series to this day and while I will admit it’s not a perfect series I can definitely see why it’s an iconic show with its fun and creative stories and memorable monsters and aliens (my personal favourite monsters are red king and gomora and my favourite aliens are dada and zetton) and while yeah it’s not without its flaws like non of the characters really develop and the effects can look dated but then again not every first instalment of a franchise will be perfect overrall I think the original ultraman series is a really good show and it’s one of the main reasons on why the franchise is still going strong to this very day
Yeah, I was so surprised at how well it held up when I first watched it and loved seeing it a second time on BD. What was your favorite episode?
Personally my favourite episodes were
1. The lawless monster zone
2. The prince of monsters parts 1 and 2
3. The littlest hero
4. Farewell ultraman
5. Human specimens 5. And 6.
6. My home is earth
Doesn’t Ultra man own it’s legacy to Godzilla?
Pretty much.
