It was entitled Ultra Fight, and each episode ran only five minutes. The new series proved to be popular, so popular that the network wanted to extend it, even after Tsuburaya had used all of their stock footage. Therefore new monster battles were filmed, such as Eleking vs. Baltan, using costumes that had survived in usable shape from the TV series. Ultraseven also returned to battle monsters in some of the new segments. The success of the program inspired similar series of nothing but kaiju battles, including Tsuburaya’s Redman (1972-1973) and Toho’s Go! Godman (1972-1973) and Go! Greenman (1973-1974). The success of Ultra Fight also ensured the production of Return of Ultraman which got the greenlight in December of 1970. Info from G-Fan #128 from an article by John Lemay. Kind of makes you wonder what the series would have been like if the original Ultraman was the main hero character instead of Jack.
I take it you have been watching Brandon Tenold's videos based on the fact you used the whole "Decapitation" gag at the part showing Bemstar getting dismembered.
Nope. I haven't watched a Tenold review in like 3-4 years. I just don't have time. Plus, I used that decapitation gag in Seven and another review a few years back.
Interesting. I just finished this yesterday, and I pretty much knew that It wasn't going to be as good as Ultraseven or Mabey Ultraman. Yet somehow I ended up really enjoying this way more than I should. and that's because a lot of my favorite episodes from the classic Ultra series are founded here. My favorites are 36 - 37 the two-parter with Alein Nackle and Black King. Episode 51 since it featured Zetton and Alien Bat. and Lastly Episode 48 since it was Hilarious. I also like the soundtrack, the fact that Jack uses more Kicks, Jumps, and Cartwheels. the few episodes that focused on the members of MAT. And I like how the first third were monsters from the earth, then the monsters from outer space, and then the aliens. It's definitely not perfect yes, but a lot of my early memories are from this series and I'm glad that after 10 years I was able to watch it in it's Interity. and it's now my 2nd favorite in the Showa era. And Now Ultraman Ace is next and I can't wait for that One! Good job on the review.
I liked it a lot more in the end than I initially thought, but right now I'd rank it as #5 for the Ultra series MC has released on BD so far. I haven't gotten to watch Orb Origin yet though.
@@TokuAndAnimationNewsNetwork That's good because just Like with Ultraman I enjoyed it more when I reached it in the end. anyway, good luck with your conference next week!
Good review on the return of ultraman series! My favorite monsters in this show are Earthtron, Sadora and Black King as well as Seagoras and Seamons and my favorite episodes are the Seagoras episode and the two parter with Alien Nackle and Black King.
Finally, get to see your review on Jack. Probably is my childhood is playing tricks on me but I felt that most of the episodes are okay except the ones you mentioned are the better episodes. Jack's bracelet is also a "get out of jail" card whenever the situation arises. Even when Jack was torn apart by a snow bear monster and the bracelet put his body back together again like super glue. (WTF?) Look like having issues with the blu ray make me think twice of getting the series. Well, time to watch in other ways I can. Even though Seven has the better ending scene but the finale scene with Dan and Jiro as Dan bid farewell and told him about the five vows of Ultra was very touching especially the music piece played at the end.
Well like I said, I was ready to give the show a 3 because I felt underwhelmed by its episodes until the last quarter when it felt like the writers were finally on their A game.
I'm sure he did, but I only knew him from Orb and since that is the only one I reviewed he has shown up in, I figured there was no need to reference any other series.
that explains the Ultraman manga and Netflix anime version's of Jack's personality who is now some blonde-haired muscular guy who wrestles monsters for some reason.
nice review I liked it now you can do Ultraman Ace next Kaiju no Kami you're basically the only RUclipsr I heard of that that's not Japanese who goes that far reviewing the Ultraman franchise past the limits of the first 39 episodes
Hi ! I really like the design of jack, while the original ultraman looks more alien-like, the little changes on jack's face makes it look more like a buddha statue
Originally, Eiji wanted the show to be a revival of the original, with the original Ultraman returning to Earth and Hayata reclaiming his identity as Ultraman, however Hajime scrapped these plans. It made more sense from a merchandising standpoint to create a new hero.
I wonder if that farting monster may have been an inspiration for the Slitheen from Doctor Who. 😒😒 I really did lol at the Samurai Jack and Sealab references, those were great! I'd seen somewhere on RUclips a few years ago the fights with Alien Nacle and Black King, and was really really impressed with the cinematography used to give that sunset atmosphere. I'm really interested to check it out now that it's on Blu-Ray to see some of it's other good shots like that!
I thought it was funny how in episode 10, Jiro's classmate is doing a slideshow class presentation on the history of the dinosaurs, and several kids keep bringing up Godzilla, Rodan and King Ghidorah. So I guess Godzilla franchise exists in the Ultraman universe but as a fictionsal one lol
@@TokuAndAnimationNewsNetwork I mean it certainly doesnt exist in their world as actual events that happened lol. One kid even said "I saw Rodan vs Godzilla" as if to mean he saw said movie (even though theres no such movie called that lol)
ah yea i love beating up mosnters But yeah, spent the night binging your remaining ultra reviews I haven't watched yet (Seven-Geed), ending with this, and I really enjoyed them. Got Orb for christmas and I feel I should probably start watching it even if I didn't finish Juspion yet. I just realllly hope they get to Tiga soon but I have no clue how many shows it'll take to get to it, since I remember being bombarded with ads of the 4Kids subtitled versions (yes, 4Kids subbed the whole show on DVD) while watching Yugioh. I always thought Tiga's face was scarier than the monsters themselves due to having no pupils, but it looks like a super cool show and I'd love to watch it (That and it being the first of the "neo-Ultraman shows"). But I'm thinking of going with Seven-onwards too since they seem to be very good too! I wonder if they'll get to the cartoon.
I wouldn't expect Tiga until next year. I figure this year they will finish off the HD Showa series with Leo, conclude the recent stuff except for Taiga, and then work on the HD Heisei series next year.
I just re-watched episode 17 again and the subs aren't that badly mis timed like in Ultraman episodes 22 or 24. And that because I'm really fast when reading subs or text. No I'm not kidding. I can actually read them even with 1.5 speed in this video. Though it is still disappointing that only one episode is mis timed otherwise this set is nearly perfect... Well, that and the dozens of misspellings on the episode guides.
I just can't stand mistimed subs in general though. I don't like hearing the characters say one thing in Japanese, but the subs say something else since they aren't timed properly. The same goes for subs showing up during scenes of silence.
@@TokuAndAnimationNewsNetwork That's understandable. And yeah I'm also bothered by mistimed subs as well. especially if they happened more than 1 episode.
Oh that's tough. I want to say Seven because I loved a ton of them, but there were some weak ones. Tiga had a lot of great designs too. I'll get back to you on that after I watch a few more series.
The more I watch other shows, the more I realize how unique and ahead of its time the show is. For one thing, most Japanese shows of the same from that time had a very bright colored and were all play play time. Jack is unique for its vehicle designs (using only dark colors rather than mixing everything from the amusement park color palette), music (Prisma episode is the best example, especially the scene at the baseball stadium. You never hear a horror soundtrack like that in any movie from that time nor from today. I actually use it in my personal videos), and the vibe and colors (Jack has a generally gloomy and washed out color scheme with little vibrancy, giving it that horror look and lighting. Speaking of which, the mild to horror vibe that Jack gives in many episodes is also never to be found in any other TV show I've seen). The show also put in its own accents to its scenes with editing, camera, and music, so it's not as minimalist as seven is. Jack doesn't seem to follow any TV or short-lived culture trends from the time and all the story ideas seem to be made up on the spot from thin air, which is why I think it's very unique plus all the reasons above. Heck, I'm even copying and inspiring from Jack's episodes in a school project I'm working on.
I'm not sure I would say Return was totally ahead of its time as Kamen Rider was doing the same thing, but I get what you are saying and it does give Return its own identity.
@@TokuAndAnimationNewsNetwork Thinking about KR, it also does have similar lighting to Return. But the music, design, and story all seem more “kiddy” if you know what I mean. Also, KR’a bike legit looks like something from a 1970s amusement park compared to the more “serious” look of MAT’s vehicles
I watched this show in order to pay tribute to Jiro Dan with his passing last year ans I got me a Ultraman Jack Funko too. Go I feel had a lot of flaws but he learned not to act that way over time. This season showed he wasn't perfect and I'm ok with that. You can't have a perfect hero and have it stick the landing. But the high light of the season is the racism episode. That episode almost ticked me off but no it didn't. The episode pretty much cemented that Go has learned from his mistakes and he is a good man. I hope Jiro Dan may rest in peace.
11:02 I think even at the finale, MAT never find out that Go is Ultraman Jack. At the end, Go fake his death after the battle against Zetton II and Alien Bat. Only his family figure out that Go is Ultraman Jack and that he is alive.
Right, but that still makes no sense. If someone finding out their identity makes them unable to transform back, then Go should be stuck as Jack permenantly.
@@TokuAndAnimationNewsNetwork Oh, so they merge with someone that is not them, and now they have the risk of staying as some alien being that’s not them? That’s not fair! They have family’s and friends! Would you rather be with your family and friends or giant man aliens that protect the earth?
@@MGWFilms97 Well they literally died lol so its not like they have a choice. The only reason they were 'alive again is because of the Ultramen fusing their bodies with them. Someone should make a fan art peice of that design.
The monsters are good there’s some returning monsters and aliens like alien Bolton and zetton but we don’t see alien Bolton actually fight against Ultraman rather he use a Mecha and then when his Mecha was destroyed he retreat and that was all we got
No in fact in reality it was a contest in the 80s that give them the name Ultraman jack well if I could remember his original name was Shin man i think
Yes the original bio also fun fact years later the same kid that made the script for The return of Ultraman actually win a contest when he was a dentist in the 80s also the same artist that did the original bio did art for Biollante
Does anyone think the Ultra Cross was a tribute to Eiji Tsuburaya, since he was allegedly Catholic. I know it was used to kill specifically Draculas, a vampire. But then it was used again several times after, including the last episode.
@@TokuAndAnimationNewsNetwork Just a possibility. Everyone knows the Ultraman specium pose was based on the cross. And it's possible the original Mothra movie used the church prominently in its climax, though I'm not sure if that was from the short story it was based on.
@@TokuAndAnimationNewsNetwork No that isn't true! there is in fact a dub of this series made all the way back in the early to mid 70's, I know this since both my teacher and my janitor during my 4th grade did recognize some of my Ultra figures including Jack. that's because they were aired on weekdays back before there where VHS Tapes, and there were even English dubs of Ace, Taro, Leo, and maybe 80, including one episode of Ultra Q. some of which I was able to found here on youtube. but there pretty much-lost media, and I was very fortunate enough to know people that have seen them, and even found a few episodes. Just thought I would let you know. :-)
So while I have 2 episodes left of Ultraseven, and the next show I plan on watching is Ultraman Orb: The Origin Saga, I did just buy the Blu-Ray for this show and Ultraman X

I mean, the japanese one not the english one. But the reason why is because it somehow gives me that feel of excitement like it belong to Ultraman Jack himself. And can you resist not thinking of jack himself when the japanese lyrics for Great actually said: "Kaware Jack" - Changed Jack? No really, everytime that part of lyric get repeated, I keep on thinking of Ultraman Jack for some reason.
Good review it is annoying about episode 17. They won't fix it though. This happened with Millcreeks Gamera vs Guiron blu ray release the sub titles were mistimed and it ruins it.
I thought he got his name because Tsuburaya was going to produce a show call "Mighty Jack." Then the fans were so hungry for more Ultraman, they decided to just call it Ultraman Returns... then later calling him Jack because of his original "Jack" name?

@@TokuAndAnimationNewsNetwork Like Ultraman jack is to Ultraman Hayata Ginrai has a strong resemblance to Optimus Prime but unlike Ginrai Jack's theme song doesn't seem to help with that confusion with him and Ultraman Hayata
Just finished the last episode yesterday. Not as good as Ultraseven, but still enjoyable. The episode I hate the most is the one with a kid rehatching the monster inside his apartment, as the child's acting was so emotionless and sounds like a robot. My favorite one is the one that a child befriends with an alien. I remember watching the Prisma episode aired on cable when I was a kid (dubbed in my language of course). Watching the episode again made me felt that the score during Prisma first scene was kinda out of place imo. Also, I have to agree that the way they blended some scientific lessons into the episode is interesting..... ..... way better than Godzilla Singular Point.

@@TokuAndAnimationNewsNetwork Ace is like Return but a bit worse, I think you'll think it's ok. Taro is like the farting monster episode for 53 episodes. It thankfully picks up again with Leo
Wasn't a fan of Leo though. It felt like it was trying to be edgy and grim dark just for the sake of it while turning Dan into a completely and utterly unlikable asshole.
I disagree with the effects. From what I've seen, this series has the best model sets ever in any showa Ultraman series especially with the foliage in the early episodes where it's nearly indistinguishable from the real thing. I'd say the cons you mentioned are the only cons I can think of. As for story, I found the 40s going really downhill because of the lack of sophistication especially with ep47 where no explanation is given about Okka's strange behaviors and no real resolution to them. Still better than any Ultraman Ace episode, though.
I wouldn't say they are the best in my book as I felt those in Ultra Seven were much better, but they are definitely way better than those found in Ace.
@@TokuAndAnimationNewsNetwork That’s odd. Most of the foliage in Seven look like foam while the foliage in return (depending on the scene) have the detail of the actual leaves
I love it, but I probably won't ever review it unless RUclips changes its asinine copyright system. WB will claim that review within 15 seconds of it being posted.
Nope, I watch every episode from start to finish. The only thing I skip out when I'm binging a series are the openings and endings outside of the first episode I start with and then the ending to the last episode I watch (if it has an ending song).
First, can you just edit in a spoiler warning above your question for those that have not seen this series? As for what I thought about it, it was... well, odd. It made sense for how they were handled, but not for how Jiro handled it. Only a day went by between the two parter but at the end of Part 2 Jiro is happy and celebrating Xmas. We rarely ever say him reflect on the death of his family. I also still have no idea who Rumiko is nor why she was there with Jiro setting up a Xmas tree at the end.
No prob and about the Farting monster yes it's stupid but I do like King MaiMai's design. And if you think farting monster is stupid just wait till you get to Ultraman Taro. My God that series is Half Childish Half BatShit insane.
You thinking farting was gross. Go watch Godzilla versus hedorah aka Godzilla versus the smog monster. Thant movie will really put your stomach and your gagg reflex to the test..
After Ultraman80...all we see is crap !! heissei era was a disaster and they turn a classic concept into selling toy business with thousand of crap plots...terrible actors and special effect which can barely scratch the surface compared to what was done during showa period. Ultraman SHOWA is timeless and forever!
I can't agree there as Tiga, Nexus, X, and Orb are some of the best series in the franchise as far as I'm concerned. Also, Ace's effects are really bad compared to the modern shows.
Thats mostly happened within the last decade with a few exceptions. Similar to Kamen Rider; Bandai has gotten more involved which then results in shows being made sepcifically to sell the toys so you have these shows now that revolve around whatever toy gimmick is used in the show to promote said toys. Theres a term for it i forget the name 'toymetic' or something. Anyeays yeah 90's era and 00's era didnt really have this problem yet. and Orb uses this toy gimmick (use of cards) but still manages to be well recveived by many for its story. You also have different era so different mindset of people making said shows and different social poltical norms. The use of violence for one thing is out which the Showa era had more of. But also the later Showa eras focused a lot on kids stories (for better or for worse) which you dont see Heisei and Reiwa era doing a lot.

Same dude same.😢
The May release works for me since May is the busiest month for my working. Assuming my school district actually opens back up.
Good review on the return of ultraman series! My favorite monsters in this show are Earthtron, Sadora and Black King as well as Seagoras and Seamons and my favorite episodes are the Seagoras episode and the two parter with Alien Nackle and Black King.
Black King is cool. I wish the ending to the second part didn't feel so out of place given Jiro just lost his family.
16:47 WHAT A HORRIBLE NIGHT TO HAVE A CURSE *cue bloody tears*
:-D
We bought the Return of Ultraman Blu-ray. Episode 48 is our favorite! 👍👍👍👍
Why's that?
Watch Ep 48 yourself and you’ll understand.
I've seen it, I just don't remember which one that is off the top of my head. Ultraman has kind of blurred together at this point for me. 😀
Nackle has appeared many times before Orb btw, not to mention his appearance in *Ultraman Taiga* (which just came out) was phenomenal!
I'm sure he did, but I only knew him from Orb and since that is the only one I reviewed he has shown up in, I figured there was no need to reference any other series.
@@TokuAndAnimationNewsNetwork I just was looking for a way to get you to watch Taiga, haha.

Hi
!
I really like the design of jack, while the original ultraman looks more alien-like, the little changes on jack's face makes it look more like a buddha statue
lol I guess it does. :-)
🙃
Originally, Eiji wanted the show to be a revival of the original, with the original Ultraman returning to Earth and Hayata reclaiming his identity as Ultraman, however Hajime scrapped these plans. It made more sense from a merchandising standpoint to create a new hero.
And I'm glad they did.
You have officially made me want to watch this show!
Cool. Enjoy. :-)
Just watched Godzilla vs Biollante still great
I wonder if that farting monster may have been an inspiration for the Slitheen from Doctor Who. 😒😒
I really did lol at the Samurai Jack and Sealab references, those were great!
I'd seen somewhere on RUclips a few years ago the fights with Alien Nacle and Black King, and was really really impressed with the cinematography used to give that sunset atmosphere. I'm really interested to check it out now that it's on Blu-Ray to see some of it's other good shots like that!
I wouldn't be surprised if DW did get the idea from that monster.
Yeah, the fight with Nackle and Black King was very impressive.
@@TokuAndAnimationNewsNetwork Do you think they refrained from using the original Ultraman and Seven in the battle because of budgetary reasons?

I thought it was funny how in episode 10, Jiro's classmate is doing a slideshow class presentation on the history of the dinosaurs, and several kids keep bringing up Godzilla, Rodan and King Ghidorah. So I guess Godzilla franchise exists in the Ultraman universe but as a fictionsal one lol
Kind of.
@@TokuAndAnimationNewsNetwork I mean it certainly doesnt exist in their world as actual events that happened lol. One kid even said "I saw Rodan vs Godzilla" as if to mean he saw said movie (even though theres no such movie called that lol)

ah yea i love beating up mosnters
But yeah, spent the night binging your remaining ultra reviews I haven't watched yet (Seven-Geed), ending with this, and I really enjoyed them.
The episode that an old Alien stay with a kid without parents impressive me
Yeah, that was a good episode.
What ultra series do you think had the best kaiju designs
Oh that's tough. I want to say Seven because I loved a ton of them, but there were some weak ones. Tiga had a lot of great designs too. I'll get back to you on that after I watch a few more series.
@@TokuAndAnimationNewsNetwork I think 80 had the best in the showa era and max in the heisei era
Its like the subtitles are pretending to be Japanese beurocrats having a meeting (I'm looking at you shin Godzilla)

14:08 OMG its gazpacho
Man this ultra man doesn’t fuck around
Nope.
Nice. I wish Ryusoulger had actually done something with Dan.
The reason why zetton is pretty bad is because it was recycled from the original suit
Also in the ultra universe it is because alien bat revived the original zetton and it's body was re made
Good to know.
Can you please make a review on Ultraman Mebius or Ultraman Max?
When Mill Creek releases them I will.
@@TokuAndAnimationNewsNetwork But In Ultraseven that did not happen? It is because Dan told Anne himself?
In that case, Dan was Ultra Seven in disguise whereas Go, Hayata, and Hokuto were people who have shared their lives with the Ultras.
Speaking of Ryusoulger what did you think of Eras and the twist that she is the first villain with actual good intentions.
I thought it was a poorly implement forced in plot twist to make you believe the show was being sophisticated.
@@TokuAndAnimationNewsNetwork either that or they wanted you to think think she was your typical villain or for something that Super Sentai had never fully done before happen. Either way you think about it at least this twist of Eras being the first benevolent villan in the franchise does at least make her stand out. Also she also for some reason makes me think of what a Combination of Xehanort's second armored form and a Darkling with a dash of Copernicus would look like. In fact it would be cool. Someone should make a fan art peice of that design.
To me return of Ultraman is probably actually I love the opening theme and the mat theme
Yeah but that king is probably one of the most badass monsters in the ultra series
Yes so probably one of my favorite is the fighting theme of Ultraman Jack as well almost reminds me of a wild West music
Does anyone think the Ultra Cross was a tribute to Eiji Tsuburaya, since he was allegedly Catholic. I know it was used to kill specifically Draculas, a vampire.
But then it was used again several times after, including the last episode.
Hmmm, could be.
@@TokuAndAnimationNewsNetwork Just a possibility.
Everyone knows the Ultraman specium pose was based on the cross. And it's possible the original Mothra movie used the church prominently in its climax, though I'm not sure if that was from the short story it was based on.

That it did.
Is there an English dub on it?

I disagree with the effects. From what I've seen, this series has the best model sets ever in any showa Ultraman series especially with the foliage in the early episodes where it's nearly indistinguishable from the real thing. I'd say the cons you mentioned are the only cons I can think of.
