*VIDEO INFORMATION UPDATE* I made some mistakes while researching this video and confused some information. A person who actually worked on a restoration edit for Rock & Rule mentioned a few things about the film and what I got wrong. Sincerely, I apologize for the mistakes. I value accurate information above all else in my videos but some things fell through the cracks here. Moving forward, I'll make sure to be more thorough with my research and that the information I have is 100% accurate an also letting you all know when information is my personal opinion or a theory and not a proven fact. That being said, here are a few primary things I got wrong. By the way, I'm copy/pasting the following info from the corrected comment:
-The longer 1 hour 21 minute version is the Original Version, Greg Salata playing the more cocky, arrogant Omar, Zip surviving and lacking the extended explanation of the world at the start (no mutated dogs/cats/mice, etc.)
-The version posted on RUclips is the altered MGM US Cut, it was heavily reworked and Omar was redubbed/rewritten to be more ''sympathetic'', with Zip dying at the end (which was their intention judging by the workprint, which I used to restore the film's final act)
-The version on RUclips is also not ''the first time'' it's been on the platform, Clive A. Smith's personal account once had an upload of the film which was much better quality than the one which is a VHS rip of the US Cut from back in the day, and before that my own uploads of my restorations which amassed 70k and 200k before they got pulled
If you'd like to watch the restored version of the movie from this commentator, go hit up their channel: ruclips.net/video/O37op2fVAPI/видео.html
Once more, I apologize for any mistakes on my end. I never had the intention of putting out wrong info. I honestly thought what I found was the truth but mistakes were made. I'll make sure it doesn't happen again in future videos and that I start to source my videos in the description

Adult animations from pre-1990 are so..... Stylized, but so fluid and well down. I really wish that adult animations would come back. I imagine that theres a large market for them now, but so many people don't pay attention to the plot of what theyre seeing before they take their kids to the theater.
Today you have the 2000s-2018 anime by Masaaki Yuasa
If it came back it would be this pseudo anime inspired bullshit like everything else

The art style is hella cool, actually. It’s like Disney but grittier.
Yea I love it. It made me want to watch it
To each their own. "like Disney but grittier" feel like it defeats the purpose of a "grown up" cartoon. Animal people (in the vein Goofy people ala A Goofy Movie) is a weird way to go if you are trying to separate yourself from the Mouse. Funny enough the 1980s were kind of a crappy time for Disney (their Touchstones movies are much more memorable than their Disney stuff). So why imitate the style? There was probably no way this movie was going to make its money back if even Disney wasn't super successful making cartoon movies at the time.
The art style and animation are gorgeous
Its kinda like beavis and butthead but turned down

I’m a sucker for hand-drawn animation, especially when it’s really smooth and all the characters have unique designs. Even if this movie wasn’t the “best”, I still enjoyed how hard the animators worked to make this movie look good for its time.

I can see your point about Omar, but as someone who hangs out with a lot of musicians (I do a lot of band photography), he really rings true as having "frontman syndrome". So does the dynamic with Angel and the other bandmates. It really feels like something written by musicians for musicians. Watching it made me really eager to see live shows again!
It really kinda fits! Stretch is your classic weirdo bass player. He's probably a gear head! Dizzy wasn't as "drooling out of both corners of his mouth" as your average drummer, but he still works
As one of those classic weirdo bass players mentioned by another poster, I agree that Omar's personality, as well as the dynamic with his bandmates, rings true to real life. Its one of very few movies about rock bands that actually gets this right! Seriously, this is so common that the DSM-5 needs to include "Frontman Syndrome" among its listing of Personality Disorders.

The disturbing implication is that only kids draw, or appreciate art. It sets a dangerous precedent when everything aesthetic is deemed "childish" by default but that's just me🤷🏿♀️
The problem is that most people in america assume anything animated is for kids. So these studios arent that wrong to think people are idiots, because they are. The most sinful part of the “recut” is when they put silly loud music over the car scene and removed Omar and Angels intimate dialogue. That was one of the few parts of the movie where you see them interact and really see them care for each other. But MGM had to make the scene “haha for kids.” What’s frustrating is that there’s another cut where at the end Omar gets up and rises off his feet to sing with Angel, a clip which is cut in some versions and I think really helps transition his character more.

ON HEEEEAVY MEEEETAAAAALLLL
Shocking. I loved both that and this film growing up.
a couple of things you missed: The animation team was divided into sets of people who were tasked with sharing a style format, each character had their own team of animators, utilizing a different style for each set of characters, giving them each their own distinct flair and flavor visually. Dizzy and Stretch got one team, the Roller-Skating Sclepper Brothers got another team, Mok got a team, Omar got a team, Angel got a team, and throughout, there were different teams working on some of the other background characters. The background characters in the Anti-gravity club was done by yet another team of animators, and yet, it all fit together so perfectly and bizarrely, which, in a way, almost mirrors how Heavy Metal was done utilizing different artists for it's entire run.
Then there are the wide sweeping overhead/godview scenes of the city of Ohmtown. That was an actual model that sat on 2 pingpong tables, with little tiny vehicles being moved along through slots underneath the table. To say they went above and beyond the call of duty is an understatement.
The only reason I know this stuff is because a friend and I did a review of it, ourselves, about 3-4 years ago and it involved a lot of research.
I know the animation on Cinderella was done by like one person.
Cool comments like this are the best part of Saber's channel.
Thanks m8. Cool story.
The character's body languages and expressions really stood out to me, it makes so much sense that they all had different teams! You can see how much love went into them, and the different things that each group excelled at.
@Oggatha Christie Can you name a movie in recent years that has done this? Meaning, each team has their own style, and aren't trying to outright mirror each other's style? Because that's what was done with this film. Each team got a set of characters, and used a different stylization for each set of characters to set them apart from one another, yet it flowed together well enough that you can't really tell unless you look closely that each style was different.
When the villain is introduced I swear that’s something David Bowie would do.
How you turn my world you precious thing
Fun fact: the song that plays during the club scene, "Dance dance dance" by Earth Wind & Fire, for a very long time was extremely rare, being the only song in the group's discography to not get a reprint outside of the movie's soundtrack despite the fact that even back then it was described as one of the highlights of the movie.
Thankfully these days it's available digitally and on streaming services, because it's an awesome track that deserves to be heard, even if one don't care for the movie it was made for.
And isnt only half of the song "Hotdogs and Sushi" (song playing in club scene when Cindy gets caught) available? That's what I've heard at least

According to the things I've learned over the years of loving this film, he was literally intended to be an obvious blend of Bowie and Jagger.
That's not Bowie?!
The main issue that led to its downfall was timing. It came out too early.
If it was released in the 90s it would have definitely rocked ... And ruled.
Maybe
maybe , but it depends , "studio deliberatly sabotaging movies " can be deliberate to thin out the herd , movie studios dont want many interesting movies , thats harder to manage so sometimes they deliberatly sabotage projects so they can close smaller studios they own to consolidate and relese "next homogenised movie for masses" , you see that a lot in gaming industry too
there is also deeper trend that if every movie would be bad(or videogame) viewers would eventually not mind that much , this is easier to notice in gaming that "game publishers normalise bad releses" but this been in movies too , lucky for us market been too big to be controlled like that completely , despite their best efforts.
you seen quite few efforts from netflix now who want to normalise bad movies and shows , even racism(recent Cleopatra """"*documentary"""" , changing taste of audience can be done and been done in past when its done slow and graduialy , most best example and most documented is how "horse armor dlc started" who is responsible how overly moentized videogames are , in movies its more subtele with many other plots between
if game studio who owns you , wants you gone it will make no diffrance.

Yep, it’s also different, which I like
I know, right! The art style oozes pure, distilled 1980's cheese, is just weird enough to be from the 1980's instead of a nostalgic throwback, the character designs are weird but allow for a great deal of expression while evoking the imagery of the rock scene of the time, the environment design is a good balance of flamboyant and grungy, and the animation is smooth, fluid, and on-model. It's a damn shame what MGM did to this movie. If it had been given the proper treatment, I think it would have been more successful than it was.

I actually really like Omar’s character because he was an asshole in front of the whole group, but he was very sweet on angel when they were alone, and his main issue was that it was hard for him to admit his feelings. He showed he cared about angel a few times but was bitter about it. Angels more cunning side that you saw in the first scene is shown when she tries to seduce Mok to trick him. Omar’s character change isn’t out of nowhere, because he was insecure in believing Angel chose Mok. He gets distant and bitter and divaish, and regresses and storms off, but decides to come back and save Angel.

By the way, This was the Same MGM UA that also screwed over Secret of Nimh merely a year earilier. MGM had no confidence in Nimh or this film. They gave Nimh a "wide" release of only 100 theaters while This was shafted to one Boston theater. MGM UA had no confidence in feature animation and the only time they really gave such a film any promotion was with the Care Bears Movie because it was based on a popular kids toy.
And the Care Bares Movie lacked actual CARE the movies they screwed over had. It was messy, the plot was forgettable, it felt too much of an extended episode. MGM had it coming.
@@Gaia_BentosZX5 Not surprised. This was before Don Bluth(the director of Nimh) had made it big with an American Tail and the Land Before Time.
Correction, Care Bears were characters from greeting cards, *then* they became toys after the cartoons released. But yeah, it sucks that this movie never got as much widespread presentation as Care Bears or any of Don Bluth's films after Nimh because this movie is pretty unique and underrated.
I LOVE THE SECRET OF NIMH! I have it on VHS and DVD!
It’s a shame this movie isn’t popular but regardless it has great animation and I’m glad it’s a cult classic. ^-^
It is a shame! I don't know why I would actually want to give the film a try.

And this is the film where Saberspark admits he's woefully out of touch. The furry running gag is the biggest example of it. It's a cult classic as this is well, a hour long musical, where the songs (and antagonist) are put front and center. It hurts being introverted, huh?
It's popular as fuck to me cause it's all I know! 😂
Well since the full movie is on youtube plus this guys review I think it'll get a shit load of newcomers and make it more popular like I only recently discovered it last week and I love it!
Here's a fun one for ya: The Demon's texture at the end was made using actual cow brains.

Hold your damn horses, excuse me?
Yup, heard THAT a long time ago. Apparently, cow brains were the PERFECT texture for a demon, thought the animators, at the time. 🐮

The version with 16:9 footage interspersed with scenes in 4:3 is actually a fan made recreation of the original Canadian cut by CptJingo (aka Dennis) using the restored hi-def American cut whenever possible, the original upload has since been removed but has been floating around the internet ever since. I ripped the Blu-Ray for him years back and he did great work cleaning up the workprint footage used in the movie's climax, which is so far the only trace of the Canadian cut that isn't sourced from a decaying broadcast tape.
Everyone please bump this comment, lumpytoast was a tremendously valuable resource to my Edit, and he knows just as much about Nelvana in general.
I am very happy about this.
I've seen the cleaned up workprint version, it kicks ass. I hope it gets some kind of acclaim soon, if not in the future.

Hey
I'm the one that worked on the Rock & Rule restoration featured in this video, (not the one Saberspark reshuffled with the US cut, the one he used as basis)
Having worked on restoring this film from 2013 to 2017 I've amassed A LOT of information about the actual development and making of the film and I can GUARANTEE you, that literally every single thing you said on this review, without exception is wrong. 37 minutes of wrong. Demonstrably wrong and it is BOUND to cause misinformation.
The longer 1hour21 minute version is the Original Version, Greg Salata playing the more cocky, arrogant Omar, Zip surviving and lacking the extended explanation of the world at the start (no mutated dogs/cats/mice, etc.)
The version posted on RUclips is the altered MGM US Cut, it was heavily reworked and Omar was redubbed/rewritten to be more ''sympathetic'', with Zip dying at the end (which was their intention judging by the Workprint, which I used to restore the film's final act)
The version on RUclips is also not ''the first time'' it's been on the plataform, Clive A. Smith's personal account once had an upload of the film which was much better quality than the one which is a VHS rip of the US Cut from back in the day, and before that my own uploads of my restorations which amassed 70k and 200k before they got pulled.
This is just scratching the surface, there's a lot more on this review I'm afraid is gonna cause so much confusion and misinformation and harm to this particular film, especially after so many years of research I put into it, I would be VERY happy if you could contact me in some way.
We went to watch it and quickly figured out Saberspark had mixed up the versions in his comparisons. Thankfully there does seem to be the "Canadian" version out there, but it was a little awkward to find? RUclips itself didn't show it in search but it showed up via google (???). The last part of the Canadian ver with Zip living seems awkwardly spliced in and doesn't really fit that final scene?
It was on the original version but it was a requirement by the Canadian Broadcasting Company, if you look at the rough Workprint version you'll see that it doesn't cut away from Mylar to Zip.
Hey folks, please give Dennis' comment a thumbs up to help Saber see it! I'd love more of the true history and facts to be known! Works like Rock and Rule are absolutely fantastic, and fans of animation should push for more of the history to be known!
Which version is the one Unearthed Films released on DVD? From what I remember, it's the better version with the "not as weird" Omar (I just came to tell you.....you were GOOD!) - yeah, that one.
Unearthed Films restored the US Cut using different sources supplied by Clive Smith, who also supplied a nearly finished Workprint of the ACTUAL Original version with Greg Salata dickier Omar, which they couldn't restore, and just featured it a few segments of it as a Bonus while supplying the Original Canadian Version as a rip of a decaying Broadcast tape.
This is one of my favorite movies of all time, and I'm so glad you reviewed it. I agree that Mok carries this film, but I have a soft spot for Angel too. She is clearly a very empathetic, non confrontational character, but she has an independent edge to her. That's why Cindy is such an effective contrast to her. And at the end her character development is that she has the courage to stand up to Mok's demon and "sing it back" even though she should be running in terror.
In fact, that's what first drew me to the movie. There was a commercial on Night Tracks one night that showed the scene of her pulling off her choker and throwing it aside. She looked so determined that I wanted to see the show just for that one scene. (I also thought it was a weapon, like Xena's chakram, but thowing aside the device that had forced her to sing was fine too)
I'm sorry you ended up so confused about MGM's edits as well. Personally, I can't picture anyone but Paul Le Mat in the role, and if the scene you showed was typical of the original performance, he was even a bigger ass than Paul's Omar. I felt that there was a tone in his voice that showed he wanted to go after Angel, but he was so caught up in the "heartless rocker who doesn't care about anything but fame" role that he felt he had to pretend to be angry and dismissive about her. He's still an ass at the end, but he decides he loves Angel enough to try and consider her feelings from now on. (Symbolically represented by joining in the song with her)
What I'm not sure is if MGM cut the drugs scene at the club, but if they did they put it back, because it's on the DVD. I agree with you that they were right to cut the scene of Zip's revival, because that ruined the whole ending. Angel and Omar might have done away with the demon, but in the end Mok caused his own death, by acting so callous to Zip.
Finally, I'll point out that Angel and Omar's hometown is called "Ohmtown". That's a great pun, and foreshadowing of the town's role in the climax.

It's weird how often Canada seems to have these really astounding animated movies where the animation is leagues above what anyone else is doing, but then you also have "Johnny Test" as one of the most successful Canadian animations ever. People don't seem to realize how much Canadian animators have lead the way in animation from Richard Williams making Who Framed Roger Rabbit to Rainmaker who while working on Reboot came up with animation techniques that PIXAR would adopt.
@Frizzurd I loved that show. I still remember "The cat came back". I need to find that again.
Frizzurd Canadian animated cartoons is what Australian and New Zealand kids grew up with. It’s a big ol’ industry. Most of the memorable shows were Canadian
Don't forget about the National Film Board of Canada who have been producing excellent animated shorts for almost 80 years.
@Frizzurd "When the Wind Blows"? Sorry but that was my first thought. But is a UK animation about the same concept. I would really like to see the one you are talking about from Oh! Canada.
@Frizzurd Thank you!! I will have to check up on that here after work(from home).
20:33 Technically speaking, we humans live in a post-apocalyptic world, since… well, we all know what happened to the non-avian dinosaurs.
And on top of that, the dinosaurs themselves lived in a post-apocalyptic world, since they came about because of the great Permian extinction just a couple tens of millions of years prior.
Geez, Omar's animation is so... weird. It's like they just strapped a cup over some guy's face and rotoscoped him. And still screwed it up, because from the front he just looks like a person wearing a fake dog nose, and then he turns his head and suddenly SNOUT.
Trogdor the BURNINATOR could teach Omar a few things about the uncanny valley.

It's a wonder that "The Secret of NIMH" was able to succeed modestly-well, given MGM's strong aversion towards animation at that time.

This movie was the one that made me realize just what people were talking about when they mentioned the differences between hand drawn animation vs computer animation. Absolutely no corners cut on making each frame expressive in this movie.
Different forms of animation need effort in different areas. One isn't inferior to the other.
While opinions are subjective, I’d say most people think hand drawn always looks more fluid, it has a hugely different feeling. That being said, it’s just more expensive.
If you really want fluid as hell 2D animation, you NEED to see Redline.
I remember seeing this for the first time on a cable service in the 80s, I think it might have been HBO. I was in my mid teens, and I thought it was the coolest thing ever. It's great to see people talking about it.
I love the aesthetic of this movie so much. It was just so unapologetically of it's time that it circled back around to be stylish now.
It sounds like you’re saying “Nirvana” every time you mention the company name.
I feel like it was intentional, lol
That's probably the point lol
So do the subtitles!
sleepy Eevee - actually (that I know of) there are 3 IRL NIRVANA BANDS and A FICTIONAL ONE!
(1ST) there was an IRL band started in UK in the 1970's, which someone at "The Creative Barn" of the Jem and The Holograms cartoon (1985-88) knew of and was base for the fictitious one (2ND) that was the "plot device" for the start of The Stingers in the last 13 episodes of the cartoon's run. Someone in Seattle, WA (or nearby) in '88 saw the cartoon and was the basis for the (3RD) Kurt Cobain one.
Unrelated to all 3 there was one (4TH) started in the EARLY '80s in Puerto Rico (where I'm LOCKED OUT and typing from) that had a moderate success in the local rock scene back then, along with others like "Top Banana".
So, the Nirvana name has A LOT OF BAGGAGE in the music business (and may have spawn even more bands that I may not know of).
Lel I thought that was what he was saying this whole time
fun production fact: many of the animators inserted themselves into the dance and bar scenes.

@@thatsoneinterestingpfpyago2521 it is! In my eyes, it's the par on how mobility-based shooters should be designed: mechanics first, and make maps WITH the mechanics in mind, unlike CoD that simply make maps and implement what is cool at the time.
