Jon Benjamin is a comedian, actor, & aspiring Jazz pianist recognized by many for his buttery vocal chords which have given depth and purpose to such characters as Bob from Bob’s Burgers, Archer from Archer, and Coach McGuirk from Home Movies. He’s also been seen gracing the sets of the national comedy treasures that are Master of None & Wet Hot American Summer. The following is a couple words from Jon Benjamin on his recent foray into the music industry:
We all start from the same place and build from there, gathering references, structures, techniques, modes, nuances, etc. and, as artists, we strive to build some- thing purposeful. Well, I Should Have…* is the culmination of hours (almost 3) of conception with the goal to bring something, in the tradition of the great vanguard jazz artists like Miles Davis, Roach, Mingus, Monk, et al, close to pure spontaneity. Jazz is the ocean…I am just one wave forming one curl, crashing once onto some remote beach somewhere in time. And that wave makes a small imperceptible change in the slope of the sand, upon which at some point in time a baby turtle will walk across, leaving his trail for just an instant, before the tide washes it clean. That’s a pretty cool analogy. More to the point, I do not play piano and I made this jazz album. Some tell me, “Hey, Jon, tone it down.” Some even say, “Really, Jon?” A few have said, “Get the fuck away from me or I’ll fucking punch you in the face.” I know the risks in making this album. I know what it is like to do something that no one else would think to do. Most would call this reckless. I call it jazz. What you are about to experience is an aural auto da fe. I am the jazz daredevil.
- Jon, New York City, July 2015
Well, I Should Have…* was recorded and mixed by Mark Desimone at Soundtrack NY, except for “Amy’s Song (The Bum Steer)”, which was mixed by Loren Bouchard (Bob’s Burgers, Home Movies). Jon is accompanied by Scott Kreitzer (saxophone), David Finck (bass), and Jonathan Peretz (drums). “Deal With the Devil” features Aziz Ansari and Kristen Schaal

It took Picasso 4 years to paint like Raphael, but a lifetime to paint like a child. Jon Benjamin took only one day to play like a child.
A+ made me laugh
Picasso did some decent realism in the beginning of his career, but to compare him to Raphael is a joke. Just take a look at Raphael's School of Athens. Picasso never had the skill level, knowledge, or craftsmanship to achieve that level of art.
@@reneelazzareschi9953 you must be fun ar parties, btw Picasso was an impressive figurative painter and well maybe he wasn't better than Raphael, but way better than 95% of the other Renaissance painters
@@literalwho9017 Picasso turned to cubism and abstraction partly because he knew he would never be anywhere as good a figurative painter as Bouguereau. He even wrote so in a letter. It’s a fascinating bit of art history. Just compare the amount of time that Picasso spent (not much) to produce one painting or drawing versus the renaissance masters or even the academic artists of the Victorian age. If you personally love his work, great, everyone is entitled to their subjective opinion. But don’t claim Picasso had anywhere near the level of skill, or was able to achieve what Italian Renaissance artists called “Difficolta”, because he objectively didn’t.
@@reneelazzareschi9953 this makes the joke 1000x better. I thank you
Pro tip: if you're having a dinner party and wanna spice up your night, put this on when everyone arrives and just wait for people to catch on
Omg yes.
They might figure it out by Amy's Song...
Did this during a party this past weekend, but I mixed the tracks in with some other legit jazz. It wasn't until a couple hours in that there was a lull in conversation, one of those "interesting" piano licks cut through, and 4 people cocked their heads to the side all at once. It was amazing.
it's a lot better than putting on your ex assistants album
If you put this on while people are eating dinner, Unless everyone is drunk you're not going to get paid
"Maybe he's a visionary, I don't know."
This album is what happens when you gather a room full of incredibly talented musicians. Jon Benjamin was also there.
The genius behind this album is that any competent pianist wouldn't be able replicate what he has done compositionally. Understanding and following patterns is something musicians grow to recognize, and eventually execute subconsciously. Jon doesn't have this knowledge. Instead, he approached this instrument completely blind to technique and theory and was able to craft something uniquely, fundamentally unhinged from the western guidelines of composition.
0/10 it sounds like shit
10/10 comment
2/0 analogy of that comment
not really, he has rythmn and you can hear when he wants the mood to go up or down
and that actually makes the album quite worse but i still love it
imagine miles davis x h jon benjamin that it would love to hear
That punchline hit me like a train, lmao.
The whole idea of this album is just so fucking stupid. I love it.
I fucking love this comment. Side note towards the end of the album he does in deed grow subconsciously with better rhythm at least.
0/10 still haven’t listen to it entirely it’s god awful
the avant-garde is deep with him
+rdavidr Hey dude, fancy seeing you here.
+rdavidr I never thought I would find you here! Well, you are a drummer.
rdavidr my man!
HA! PHRASING!
rdavidr DAVID WAT UP DOOD
As someone who hasn't ever listened to jazz, I have to say he nailed it.
Seriously, even if meant as a joke, this is still an interesting take on music, a person who does NOT know how to play music, playing music. Is it still music? Is it still art? I like it... conceptually.
To answer your questions, yes to both.
Okay I like it Picasso
interesting point. i keep noticing that most _listeners_ don't know how to play music. most music theory revolves around trying to describe what sounds good to a naive listener. but if you listen to jazz music theory, it's mostly about jazz players playing to other jazz players ... talking about patterns that would largely go unnoticed, or experienced as a vague complexity of texture, but jazz players are expected to recognise and appreciate because these are variations they practised exhaustively in order to get into the club
and yet, non-players can get deeply into jazz, maybe imagining they "get it" more than they really do, but finding a connection to mood and rhythm and melody that doesn't involve insider necessities like tritone substitution. it's why you liked jazz as a child ... before you found out it was so damn hard to play seriously. an intuitive music like it once was before it became a profession with degree courses. so i think he is interacting with the music on the level of many (or even typical) listeners. as is the act where a comedian pretends at "jazz trumpet" just with his mouth
It's like the bullshit experimental/ performance art (that I've only seen in movies and shows) at small clubs where people just smash on drum kits with their hands or "sing a song" that's just them like screaming "fuck the system" over and over.
@@Charlezard. A phenomenon much much much more often mentioned than manifested. But sure, fine, ok,
This is like watching Whiplash and Bob's Burgers at the same time.
+Alex Chavez And archer and certain episodes of family guy
It's more like watching Jon Benjamin Has a Van
Nah, it's more like watching a philosophy professor giving a lecture on ketamine.
Except rather than getting bloody fingers from drumming, Jon get's red fingers by eating hot cheetos before playing.
I like how his jazz comes at you and hits you in the face. Also, I admire his phrasing.
Like a honey covered hand slapping you.
i love how he has a box of "jazz ideas"
Most anticipated album of 2015
Years later, this is still is one of my favorite things on the internet
I'm buying it and gonna act like i know a lot about jazz
You can't be Chaz, I'm Chazz! You son-of-a-bitch!
+Chazz Cunningham Hey guys
Chas Wilson you too? You son-of-bitch! Vengeance I claim vengeance!
+Chaz Faris This is a legitimate jazz album. Jon Benjamin will stand the test of time with the greats. Charles Mingus, Thelonious Monk, Charlie Chapman, Ornette Coleman, Fred Savage, Lou Diamond Phillips. It's a great honor.
+Shaharazad221 LDP
This is brilliant. I thought it was impossible to love H. Jon Benjamin even more, and then he does this
+Will Ottenfeld Thanks man!
+Lambo Priest He was referring to a video I contributed music to on jacksfilms channel; it came out around the time he made the comment
Just bought this. He's actually got good timing and feel, just doesnt know where the keys are. hahahaha
Agree. I liked the comment "He doesn't know how to play jazz". I'm thinking, he doesn't even know how to play the piano. But yeah, he knew where to play and what the feel should be.
@@transact69 He can play Jazz, just none of the instruments. He'll be great if he learns
This is honestly the funniest shit ever
yes. I'm cracking up at work like an idiot...
I am buying this album. I've been listening to it on Spotify and ROARING with hearty laughter, joy, and appreciation. This hits every note (pun intended), and holds up to repeat listens. So funny, especially for those who have listened to a lot of jazz. And some great musicianship - seriously - on display! Thanks, Jon Benjamin, for having the courage to try this - it WORKS!
At first I was like huh how odd to see Jon doing something serious. I'm so used to hearing his voice always doing a comedy bit that hearing him be serious is literally alien to me. Then a few more minutes passed haha.
this is the work of great jazz musicians, and Jon Benjamin
I hope he does an Ep where he does Drums
I learned that you can sound good at drums for about 15 seconds, then it all falls apart.
+masterxak am drummer, can confirm
+masterxak Only if you lose your nerve, otherwise it's a free-form solo.
"CAN'T DO THAT"
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Oh . . I just about died the first time he came in on the piano! LMAO!!! awesome!
I always loved his voice. "Home Movies" was a rare gem indeed.
This was hilarious:D
+Ben A hilarious?
+4 Eyed Animation hilarious.
4 Eyed Animation I'm sorry. I'm not familiar with your work...
+Ben A Coach McGuirk was the man!!!!! lol
Jon Lindsey 😂😂😂 hell yeah
The album is torture, but this trailer is the funniest thing ever.
The beautiful thing is... it sounds different every time he plays it.
Perhaps the best fusion of expertly tightly executed classic jazz, and recklessly loosely executed freeform jazz, ever recorded. Perhaps ever played.
Just ordered copies for my entire family. Christmas shopping accomplished.
At 3:00 it sounds like he can actually play the piano for a few seconds.
If you dont know shit, playing something that sounds like it is something sometimes, isnt that rare
So hilarious!!!! I'm all about failure. This man is so brilliant and creative I am always preaching.
You know, I'm a huge jazz fan, and I gotta say... Some of his piano playing was indecipherable from actual jazz.
Like I'll be listening and for 2 bars it'll be cool as hell
3:20 actually sounds pretty awesome!
Yes! I was thinking the same thing.
I don't even know how to describe exactly why I loved this. Or how. Or anything. Just brilliant from all sides of the prism.
He's a fucking visionary. This really enhances his body of work.
OKAY. I was completely taken in: A friend forwarded the link, saying, "You're a professional pianist. What do you think? I say it's brilliant!" So I dialed it up, watched and WAS TOTALLY APPALLED. Then later, watched again. It's the funniest fucking thing EVER.
The 2010s was a golden decade for fake music made by comedians, check out Urinal St. Station by the Yellow River Boys if you thought this was funny
I love this album so much. The timing is so good.
I will buy the album. It's going to be a master piece of jazz music.
*random key mashing* "CAN'T DO THAT!" @3:22
I put this album on and it actively stressed out my dogs. 10/10.
I love everything about this he’s truly a master
The opening scene of him practicing piano fingering shapes, but not on a piano, already had me laughing so hard!
Damn would have loved to see the musicians’ reactions when he started! Oh man...this dude is the best!
"It was thoroughly horrible" Ringing endorsement from the bassist xD
Now you must acquire a taste for free form jazz.
+SnifyWisper Say Tax Exemption!
Tax exemption!
+SnifyWisper Once you've done that, you get the sideburns
exactly
I don't know how I got here, but I'm glad I watched this. Jon's comedy is gold and art wrapped up in a nice subtle package.
"I definitely achieved what I was going for."
and the Troll award goes to ...... Jon Benjamin !!!!
Amazing, inspirational, BNM, 10/10, album of the year.
I'm literally in tears from laughing about this, well done!!
I'm in love with his beautiful voice :D
When does this album drop? I need it, like yesterday.
+Brian Williams on blackfriday
+Brian Williams out now, apparently.
megamart.subpop.com/releases/jon_benjamin_jazz_daredevil/well_i_should_have
+Peter Peterson African american* friday
if he makes another one I'd love to play guitar on it
Did you play on it?
Follow up question: do you play guitar?
@@mattrutkowski5305 Yes I have some bits on my channel
I feel like this totally sums up my feelings on jazz.
I'm so confused. In a good way. Maybe?
+theneedledrop Holy shit you are fast
+theneedledrop
+theneedledrop strong 9 to a light 10 imo
+theneedledrop I need you on this one
Pls review
"how often do you practice?"
- Every music teacher in existence
Pretty much the funniest video ever. It's incredible how a good backing band will make you sound passable. =)
this is so brilliant
for not knowing how to play the piano that was pretty good. he knew what kinds of chords to play.
Whenever I need inspiration... for anything... I watch this video.
It's gonna go Diamond.
Do you want clams? Because that's how you get clams.
Also, is it just me or is he starting to feel it (albeit briefly) from 3:27-3:30?
he accidentally locked in and made it sound good xD
He's got an ear - he just doesn't know what keys to press on
no
Yes he's got an ear. He keeps it in a sandwich bag in his freezer..
also 1:30 my man is faded AF
Honestly, at 3:20 it sounds amazing, the rest is hilarious and trash (as intended) but I kinda dig that part.
You can kind of feel him growing into it as the album progresses haha
he is doing Herbie very well
This will look great among my collection of bird, Coltrane, and Henderson albums
This is totally jazz, like, in an Andy Kaufmanesque way. BRILLIANt...and unexpectedly fun and enjoyable to listen to.
I love your work
im so excited
well, you can say it's avant garde
He is an adorable human being
This is so inspiring
I enjoyed the fluid smacking of his fingers against the unsuspecting keys. Never saw it coming.
Pure true jazz
Outstanding !
I was sent here by the Steve Irwin of WW1
me 2
You actually click the mystery videos!?
I got into them because they tend to be funny, I think what convinced me to keep clicking them was the Aladdin with realistic sound one.
Zach Webb Same, but not same video that got me in. He linked me a "Educational" video which was hilarious.
You're telling me you don't? You're simple here by chance?
Just amazing
Oh my god I love this
God damn this is awesome
THIS IS ART
this is going to be amazing i can already tell.....
If people learned in this child like manner, they would reach new heights and I'm serious.
At least he has a sense of rythym. I don't think this would have worked even as a comedy concept if he didn't at least have that going for him.
The inner troll in me loves it. The musician in me is conflicted.
Why am I just coming across this golden masterpiece and it's Summer 2022? I'm dead lol!
This is some of the funniest shit I've heard. The session guys probably practiced all the pieces then Jon Benjamin comes along and just shits all over it. So so so so so so so good.
I never thought Ween's 12 Golden Country Greats would be topped.
12 Golden Country Greats has no business being as sincerely good as it is lmao. Also if you like novelty music, country, and things that are golden, may I suggest Urinal St. Station by the Yellow River Boys? It's a Tim Heidecker project, another legitimate country album with a surprising twist.
@@thecianinator I still listen to it frequently, they're geniuses
Right up there with Yoshiki's piano solo in Art of Life
*LOL* This is one of the funniest videos I've seen in months! Pro trolling by Jon Benjamin...
i love this man
I do always say surround yourself with the best and you end up with a product that is the best. A brilliant brilliant idea. I get it and pray I have the opportunity to work with the man.
hysterical!
The funny part is this is going to give Jon an appreciation of jazz. There is some great stuff out there.
He already had one or he wouldn't have known spacing, and solos, and shit. He knows jazz, he doesn't know instruments.
very pretty song
Jon. Is. AWESOME!
This is the funniest thing I have ever seen/heard.
Straight up hilarious!
Just took a look at the track list...can't wait to hear his rendition of It Had to be You
Art.
“Visionary” sums it up. Thanks Sub Pop.
you know this is still better than hip hop, right?
awesome.
Great job!
At least he is letting people know jazz is alive and well.
That lick at 3:19 was so frickin gnarly I HAD to figure out what he was doing and wrote it out. imgur.com/dA5iKiN
+Matt Harwood-Jones HAHAHAHA... Transcribing the non-players music must be equally as challenging as transcribing Zappa. :)
+Matt Harwood-Jones "CAN'T DO THAT!" *keeps playing*
