Some of the smokiest sax you'll ever come across.
There's no sweeter sound in jazz than a tenor sax in the hands of a master.
TRUTH!
That's right. Don Byas, Lucky Thompson, Zoot Sims...
Absolutely so ✌️😎🎷 jazz is best when a master tenor saxophonist like Ben Webster performs.
I love Ben Webster, I've been missing out (didn't get into Jazz untill my early 20s). The way he plays his instrument just flows right, the pianist here is great too
You're doing well. Most people don't get into Jazz until their late deadies...
What a gem. This performance is golden. Ben is beautiful, and the band is tight. Thanks for the post.

#1 - #6 (Heemstede, NL, May 26th, 1969) Ellington program, the "Guv'nor" being the Duke
Cees Slinger - piano Jacques Schols - bass John Engels - drums
#7 - #10 (Copenhagen, DK, Oct 29th, 1969)
Kenny Drew, Frans Wieringa - piano NHØP - bass Donald McKyre - drums
Kenny Drew on the right, Frans Wieringa on the left
Okay, "Cees Slinger" is the best name for a musician every. Slinging the C's. Middle C, high C, all the C's.
@@rickperlstein9988 sorry to poop your party, but "Cees" is pronounced "Keys" - still a great name for a piano player!
Arthur Kaletzky Correction: Cees is pronounced - CASE -, as in (Suit) Case. Cheers!
Who produced? They got the bass right!
Touches deep down in my soul. Thank you Benny
Recently discovered Ben Webster, amazed at the pure sound he coaxes out his instrument. Very enjoyable.
Ben Webster was Billie Holiday favorite Sax player She said his made his sax sound like a singer. Don't get no better than that!
Are you sure it wasnt Lester Young ?
He once knocked her out with a right cross, yet they kept recording together. Mutual respect transcends all.
Lester Young was her favourite...although they were both pretty special!
It's Lester Young....
Colossal maître du Jazz incontestable , incontesté et incontournable
Always a great pleasure to sweep through a beautiful performance from Ben and friends, all skill, light, touch, poetic expression, the reason to listen, love and learn.
Ben was the man!! Love his sound!!
One of Ben’s several Dutch recordings, with an (partly) excellent Dutch backing trio. He has lived in Amsterdam (where he passed) and in Copenhagen from about the mid 60’s onwards. Went to see him at his 60th birthday concert bash, at the Paradiso in Amsterdam, which was a real treat!! Great, very personal/intimate breathy player, who left very prominently his mark in the history of Jazz. Great upload. Dig this beauty folks, Enjoy & Cheers!
@@garyseven3528 Absolutely! Lots of (black) American Jazz Artists settled in (mainly) Northern Europe. I met via my dear friend Wallace Bishop (ex swing-drummer in the Earl Hines band) and who had settled in Holland. Thru Wally i was introduced too (almost) all these great Jazz players at live-gigs. They all told me that they were accepted as Artists and felt no threat of racism. The 60’s/70’s/80’s were for them the best of times. With the horrible George Floyd murder and many, many other similar cases not much seems to have changed over the years in the (good ol’) US of A. Things have desperately got to change in Americans (violent) society. Good talking to you and lets enjoy Ben’s lovely swingin’ playing. Dig & Cheers!
@@ronaldunkel2681 The harsh treatment of African-American musicians in the States is clear from the docu "Rising Tones Cross" where German bassist Peter Kowald says that he has got many opportunities offered in comparison to local musician Charles Gayle. A great film about the 1970s/80s loft-scene by a German film-maker Ebba Jahn.
@@vidjeraj8989 Thanks for the tip Vid. Be safe & Cheers!
This version of Sophisticated Lady (it sounds near 20th minute of album) is the best ever I've heard.
It's wonderful.
Prelude to a kiss it is !

So great
Un enorme referente del saxo tenor en la musica de Jazz!!!
THANK YOU
💙
Delicious and smooth. Just the thing after a long day.
Ben, Trane, Stan and Dexter. Nobody else can do ballads better then those 4.
Eddie Iannacone Paul Gonsalves was no slouch either.
Agree, but we'd better add Lester.
Dexter Is boring i prefer Johnny Hodges by far
Have to add Coleman Hawkins to the 4 and make it 5.
Eddie Iannacone Better make it 6 with Zoot Sims. Cheers!
One of the greats!!
What a delicious music!!!
Beautiful music.
No estoy seguro que seas Bernie Sanders, pero la música que nos haces el favor de compartir es hermosa. Gracias.

ITS. Lovely..
Ben had more soul than a human has a right to have,....
Is this drummer one of the drummers who Mitch Mitchel was listening to? I hear some similarities.
I think you're thinking about Elvin Jones who Mitchell and Bonham loved. That John Coltrane's favorite drummer.
Hi Bernie! You should name The personel f this (and other) records. It could help a Lot. Hope You take it as a constructive critic. Greetins from arg

whose the drummer?
John Engels
@@renangucyener3684 great drummer ✨
Sadly we have to listen to a genius & master of his craft between annoying adverts, shame on RUclips, what would these artists think if they knew there legacy would be tarnished by a hair product advert or such like, such a shame that musical mastery is ruined by RUclips & its constant pumping of adverts ! 😖
Dublín.
22 people need to take some ex-lax and learn how to enjoy life.
An easy "thumbs-up" for that comment. I wish I could give another for the screen name.
? Why put commercials in the middle of the song ?
youtube does that automatically, and the money goes to whoever owns the copyright.
I think the Duke but that is different then a gouvenur
The Guv'nor is an English term for the best in any specific category .
Ali for boxing
Sinatra for crooning
Boris for bullshitting .
Who’s on bass? Great tone. Probably the best upright tone I’ve heard
Correction: 2 bass players, on the first part Niels Henning Orsted Peterson, on the second part Jacques Schols
@@78rpm1942 makes perfect sense
Lol so far there’s three different names for the drummer
Who is the Guv"Nor?
You are right--It's the Duke. The full listing for the title of the album is For the Guv'nor (Tribute to Duke Ellington)
